Social network analysis focuses on finding patterns in interactions between people or entities. These patterns may be described in the form of a network. Network analysis in general has many applications including models of student integration and persistence, business to business supply chains, terrorist cells, or analysis of social media such as Facebook and Twitter. This presentation provides a reference for basic concepts from social network analysis with examples using tweets from Twitter.

Noncompliance With Public Health Service (Phs) Policy On Humane Care And Use Of Laboratory Animals: An Exploratory Analysis, Leah M. Gomez, Kathleen Conlee, Martin Stephens
Laboratory Experiments Collection
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is a major biomedical research-funding body in the United States. Approximately 40% of NIH-funded research involves experimentation on nonhuman animals (Monastersky, 2008). Institutions that conduct animal research with NIH funds must adhere to the Public Health Service (PHS) care and use standards of the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW, 2002a). Institutions deviating significantly from the PHS’s animal care and use standards must report these incidents to the NIH’s OLAW. This study is an exploratory analysis of all the significant deviations reported by animal-research facilities to OLAW during a 3-month period. The study identifies …
Gronwall-Ouiang-Type Integral Inequalities On Time Scales, Ailian Liu, Martin Bohner
Gronwall-Ouiang-Type Integral Inequalities On Time Scales, Ailian Liu, Martin Bohner
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present several Gronwall-OuIang-type integral inequalities on time scales. Firstly, an OuIang inequality on time scales is discussed. Then we extend the Gronwall-type inequalities to multiple integrals. Some special cases of our results contain continuous Gronwall-type inequalities and their discrete analogues. Several examples are included to illustrate our results at the end.
Weyl-Titchmarsh Theory For Hamiltonian Dynamic Systems, Shurong Sun, Shaozhu Chen, Martin Bohner
Weyl-Titchmarsh Theory For Hamiltonian Dynamic Systems, Shurong Sun, Shaozhu Chen, Martin Bohner
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We establish the Weyl-Titchmarsh theory for singular linear Hamiltonian dynamic systems on a time scale T , which allows one to treat both continuous and discrete linear Hamiltonian systems as special cases for T= ℝ and T= ℤ within one theory and to explain the discrepancies between these two theories. This paper extends the Weyl-Titchmarsh theory and provides a foundation for studying spectral theory of Hamiltonian dynamic systems. These investigations are part of a larger program which includes the following: (i) M(λ) theory for singular Hamiltonian systems, (ii) on the spectrum of Hamiltonian systems, (iii) on boundary value problems for …

Is Screening Cargo Containers For Smuggled Nuclear Threats Worthwhile?, Jason R. W. Merrick, Laura A. Mclay
Is Screening Cargo Containers For Smuggled Nuclear Threats Worthwhile?, Jason R. W. Merrick, Laura A. Mclay
Statistical Sciences and Operations Research Publications
In recent years, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has installed radiation sensors to screen cargo containers entering theUnited States. They are concerned that terrorists could use containers to smuggle radiological material into the country and carry out attacks with dirty bombs or a nuclear device. Recent studies have questioned the value of improving this screening system with new sensor technology. The cost of delays caused by frequent false alarms outweighs any reduction in the probability of an attack in an expected cost analysis. We extend existing methodology in three ways to demonstrate how additional factors affect the value of screening …

Identification Of Neuroblastoma And Its Prognostic Markers Using Raman Spectroscopy, Rachel Kast
Identification Of Neuroblastoma And Its Prognostic Markers Using Raman Spectroscopy, Rachel Kast
Wayne State University Dissertations
Introduction: Neuroblastoma is the most common cancer of infancy. It is one of several peripheral nervous system tumors, including ganglioneuroma, peripheral nerve sheath tumor, and pheochromocytoma. It is commonly situated on the adrenal gland. It displays similar histology to other small round blue cell tumors, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, and Ewing sarcoma. One method of judging neuroblastoma aggressiveness uses tumor histology factors, including mitosis-karyorrhexis index, Schwannian stromal development, degree of differentiation, and patient age. Tumor aggressiveness can also be judged based on the amplification of certain genes, including MYCN. Raman spectroscopy is a physics-based method which identifies the biochemical …
Traveling Wave Solutions For A Nonlocal Reaction-Diffusion Model Of Influenza A Drift, Joaquin Riviera, Yi Li
Traveling Wave Solutions For A Nonlocal Reaction-Diffusion Model Of Influenza A Drift, Joaquin Riviera, Yi Li
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
In this paper we discuss the existence of traveling wave solutions for a nonlocal reaction-diffusion model of Influenza A proposed in Lin et. al. (2003). The proof for the existence of the traveling wave takes advantage of the different time scales between the evolution of the disease and the progress of the disease in the population. Under this framework we are able to use the techniques from geometric singular perturbation theory to prove the existence of the traveling wave.
Confidence Intervals In Survival Analysis, Tan Shay Kee
Confidence Intervals In Survival Analysis, Tan Shay Kee
Student Works (2010-2019)
In obtaining confidence interval for the survivor function using Greenwood’s formula and in performing log-rank test for comparing the survivor functions of two groups of individuals, only the information given by the first two moments of the relevant statistics are used. Presently we show that by incorporating the information given by the third and fourth moments of the statistics, the performance of the confidence interval and statistical test can be improved. When the survivor function can be described by the Weibull distribution, the knowledge regarding the survivor function can be obtained through the estimation of the Weibull scale and shape …
Detecting Outliers And Influential Observations In Survival Model., Nor Akmal Md Noh
Detecting Outliers And Influential Observations In Survival Model., Nor Akmal Md Noh
Student Works (2010-2019)
This study proposes outlier and influential observation detection procedures for Cox proportional hazard model. In the estimation process, the parameters for Cox proportional hazard model are estimated using partial likelihood method, while the baseline hazard estimates are obtained using Nelson-Aalen method. The procedure of outlier detection is based on three types of residuals; deviance, log-odd and normal deviate residuals. We study their properties and compare their performance in detecting outliers via simulation. On the other hand, we propose a procedure of identifying influential observation using forward search method. The method has been shown to be effective in detecting influential observations …
Analysis Of Models For Longitudinal And Clustered Binary Data, Weiming Yang
Analysis Of Models For Longitudinal And Clustered Binary Data, Weiming Yang
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation deals with modeling and statistical analysis of longitudinal and clustered binary data. Such data consists of observations on a dichotomous response variable generated from multiple time or cluster points, that exhibit either decaying correlation or equi-correlated dependence. The current literature addresses modeling the dependence using an appropriate correlation structure, but ignores the feasible bounds on the correlation parameter imposed by the marginal means.
The first part of this dissertation deals with two multivariate probability models, the first order Markov chain model and the multivariate probit model, that adhere to the feasible bounds on the correlation. For both the …
Statistical Analysis Of Wastewater Remediation And Bio-Fuels Production Of Algae, Jay D. Jones
Statistical Analysis Of Wastewater Remediation And Bio-Fuels Production Of Algae, Jay D. Jones
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The Logan city wastewater treatment system consists of a series of seven large aerated ponds (460 acres) that biologically treats 15 million gallons per day of wastewater from Logan city and six other communities. Tighter regulations of allowed phosphorus levels in the effluent have recently been implemented due to environmental concerns of a downstream reservoir. The Biological Engineering program at Utah State University, the Bio-fuels Center, the Utah Water Research Laboratory (UWRL) and the city of Logan are working together to remediate the wastewater treatment system using microalgae. Algal growth requires the uptake of phosphorus. Thus, phosphorus in the effluent …
Improving Accuracy Of Large-Scale Prediction Of Forest Disease Incidence Through Bayesian Data Reconciliation, Ephraim M. Hanks
Improving Accuracy Of Large-Scale Prediction Of Forest Disease Incidence Through Bayesian Data Reconciliation, Ephraim M. Hanks
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Increasing the accuracy of predictions made from ecological data typically involves replacing or replicating the data, but the cost of updating large-scale data sets can be prohibitive. Focusing resources on a small sample of locations from a large, less accurate data set can result in more reliable observations, though on a smaller scale. We present an approach for increasing the accuracy of predictions made from a large-scale eco logical data set through reconciliation with a small, highly accurate data set within a Bayesian hierarchical modeling framework. This approach is illustrated through a study of incidence of eastern spruce dwarf mistletoe …
Economic Risk Assessment Using The Fractal Market Hypothesis, Jonathan Blackledge, Marek Rebow
Economic Risk Assessment Using The Fractal Market Hypothesis, Jonathan Blackledge, Marek Rebow
Conference papers
This paper considers the Fractal Market Hypothesi (FMH) for assessing the risk(s) in developing a financial portfolio based on data that is available through the Internet from an increasing number of sources. Most financial risk management systems are still based on the Efficient Market Hypothesis which often fails due to the inaccuracies of the statistical models that underpin the hypothesis, in particular, that financial data are based on stationary Gaussian processes. The FMH considered in this paper assumes that financial data are non-stationary and statistically self-affine so that a risk analysis can, in principal, be applied at any time scale …
Observer-Dependent Model For Analyzing Subjective Parameters In Epidemiology, Milad Zarei
Observer-Dependent Model For Analyzing Subjective Parameters In Epidemiology, Milad Zarei
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Although medical technologies for preventing the contagion and spread of infectious diseases have improved steadily throughout the last century, new infectious diseases are still emerging and spreading swiftly. The modeling of infectious disease spread is crucial in addressing the lack of predictive ability in epidemiology. Managing the spread of infectious diseases requires processing quantitative epidemiological data and the ability to capture the dynamics of the infectious disease in order to provide a measure of control.
In this thesis, I have introducing cognitive biases in diseases spread modeling. For the first time, to the author's knowledge, the human subjective experience has …

A Spline Kernel Based Smoothing Algorithm : A Comparison Of Methods With A Spatiotemporal Application To Global Climate Fluctuations, Derek Daniel Cyr
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In statistics, smoothing is a technique that attempts to capture the key patterns or trends in data while leaving out the noise that is obscuring them. Nonparametric techniques are well-suited for smoothing as they do not rely on assumptions that the data arise from a given probability distribution.
Effect Of Noise In Principal Component Analysis With An Application To Ozone Pollution, Katerina G. Tsakiri
Effect Of Noise In Principal Component Analysis With An Application To Ozone Pollution, Katerina G. Tsakiri
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This thesis analyzes the effect of independent noise in principal components of k normally distributed random variables defined by a covariance matrix. We prove that the principal components as well as the canonical variate pairs determined from joint distribution of original sample affected by noise can be essentially different in comparison with those determined from the original sample. However when the differences between the eigenvalues of the original covariance matrix are sufficiently large compared to the level of the noise, the effect of noise in principal components and canonical variate pairs proved to be negligible. The theoretical results are supported …
The Joint Distribution Of Bivariate Exponential Under Linearly Related Model, Norou Diawara, Kumer Pial Das
The Joint Distribution Of Bivariate Exponential Under Linearly Related Model, Norou Diawara, Kumer Pial Das
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
In this paper, fundamental results of the joint distribution of the bivariate exponential distributions are established. The positive support multivariate distribution theory is important in reliability and survival analysis, and we applied it to the case where more than one failure or survival is observed in a given study. Usually, the multivariate distribution is restricted to those with marginal distributions of a specified and familiar lifetime family. The family of exponential distribution contains the absolutely continuous and discrete case models with a nonzero probability on a set of measure zero. Examples are given, and estimators are developed and applied to …
Linearly Ordered Topological Spaces And Weak Domain Representability, Joe Mashburn
Linearly Ordered Topological Spaces And Weak Domain Representability, Joe Mashburn
Mathematics Faculty Publications
It is well known that domain representable spaces, that is topological spaces that are homeomorphic to the space of maximal elements of some domain, must be Baire. In this paper it is shown that every linearly ordered topological space (LOTS) is homeomorphic to an open dense subset of a weak domain representable space. This means that weak domain representable spaces need not be Baire.
Coarsening In High Order, Discrete, Ill-Posed Diffusion Equations, Catherine Kublik
Coarsening In High Order, Discrete, Ill-Posed Diffusion Equations, Catherine Kublik
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We study the discrete version of a family of ill-posed, nonlinear diffusion equations of order 2n. The fourth order (n=2) version of these equations constitutes our main motivation, as it appears prominently in image processing and computer vision literature. It was proposed by You and Kaveh as a model for denoising images while maintaining sharp object boundaries (edges). The second order equation (n=1) corresponds to another famous model from image processing, namely Perona and Malik's anisotropic diffusion, and was studied in earlier papers. The equations studied in this paper are high order analogues of the Perona-Malik equation, and like the …

Investigating The Ironwood Tree (Casuarina Equisetifolia) Decline On Guam Using Applied Multinomial Modeling, Karl Anthony Schlub
Investigating The Ironwood Tree (Casuarina Equisetifolia) Decline On Guam Using Applied Multinomial Modeling, Karl Anthony Schlub
LSU Master's Theses
The ironwood tree (Casuarina equisetifolia), a protector of coastlines of the sub-tropical and tropical Western Pacific, is in decline on the island of Guam where aggressive data collection and efforts to mitigate the problem are underway. For each sampled tree the level of decline was measured on an ordinal scale consisting of five categories ranging from healthy to near dead. Several predictors were also measured including tree diameter, fire damage, typhoon damage, presence or absence of termites, presence or absence of basidiocarps, and various geographical or cultural factors. The five decline response levels can be viewed as categories of a …

Statistical Topology Via Morse Theory, Persistence And Nonparametric Estimation, Peter Bubenik, Gunnar Carlsson, Peter T. Kim, Zhiming Luo
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
In this paper we examine the use of topological methods for multivariate statistics. Using persistent homology from computational algebraic topology, a random sample is used to construct estimators of persistent homology. This estimation procedure can then be evaluated using the bottleneck distance between the estimated persistent homology and the true persistent homology. The connection to statistics comes from the fact that when viewed as a nonparametric regression problem, the bottleneck distance is bounded by the sup-norm loss. Consequently, a sharp asymptotic minimax bound is determined under the sup–norm risk over H¨older classes of functions for the nonparametric regression problem on …

Statistical Modelling And Inference For A Class Of Bivariate And Related Distributions., Ng Choung Min
Student Works (2010-2019)
This thesis considers bivariate extension of the Meixner class of distributions by the method of generalized trivariate reduction so that the marginal distributions have different parameters; in particular, a new bivariate negative binomial (BNB) distribution is examined. Different marginal parameters allow flexibility in statistical modelling and simulation studies when different marginal distributions and a specified correlation are required. The multivariate extension of this class of distributions is also given. Specifically, various interesting properties of the proposed BNB distribution, such as canonical expansion and quadrant dependence are examined. In addition, potential applications of the proposed distribution, as a bivariate mixed Poisson …
Some Problems Of Outliers In Circular Data., Ali H.M. Abuzaid
Some Problems Of Outliers In Circular Data., Ali H.M. Abuzaid
Student Works (2010-2019)
This study considers three problems of outliers in circular statistics. The first problem is an attempt to use the standard outlier detection procedures for linear data set by approximating circular variables by linear variables. This is possible for large values of concentration parameter. Series of simulation studies are carried out to specify the accepted value of the concentration parameter so that the von Mises distribution can be approximated by normal distribution. The second is the problem of outliers in circular samples. Two numerical tests of discordancy are proposed to identify outliers. The test statistics are based on the summation of …

Econophysics is an interdisciplinary research field applying the mathematical methods of statistical physics to economics and finance. It emphasizes quantitative analysis of large amounts of economic and financial data as oppose to the more philosophical approach of political economics. A popular topic studied in econophysics is the distribution of wealth. Many models have been proposed to explain the trading dynamics [12,13] leading to the distribution of wealth universally observed in many countries. A more recent topic in econophysics is the movement of money studied by Brockmann in [19,20]. In this work, we are interested in studying the relation between the distribution …
