Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Probability Applet, Chelsa Green Tuddenham

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The purpose of this project was to develop and examine a computerized interactive probability applet designed to teach basic concepts of probability. The applet design was intended to be a user-friendly way to encourage understanding of basic probability concepts such as, rules of probability, probabilities of mutually exclusive events, and the multiplication rule. Thirty participants were recruited from Utah State University and were asked to participate in the evaluation process of the probability applet. The evaluation of the probability applet consisted of three parts: First, a group of participants were video recorded and asked to voice any and all thoughts …

The Influence Of Familism On Descriptive And Injunctive Norms In Predicting The Intention To Eat A Vegetarian Diet Among Chinese Seventh-Day Adventists, See Wei Toh Jan 2009

The Influence Of Familism On Descriptive And Injunctive Norms In Predicting The Intention To Eat A Vegetarian Diet Among Chinese Seventh-Day Adventists, See Wei Toh

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

According to the theory of planned behavior (TpB), one determinant of intention to engage in a behavior is the subjective norm. Various studies have found that subjective norm is often the weaker predictor of intention compared to perceived behavioral control and attitude. This study examined whether familism (emphasis on the family rather than the individual) would contribute positively to the predictive power of the TpB model through interactions with the family portion of descriptive and injunctive norms. Descriptive and injunctive norms are component variables of the subjective norm. A sample of 284 adult Chinese Seventh-day Adventists 18 years and older …

Spatial Clustering Using The Likelihood Function, April Kerby Jan 2009

Spatial Clustering Using The Likelihood Function, April Kerby

Department of Statistics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Researchers have been using clustering algorithms for many years to group similar observations based on a set of recorded characteristics. The majority of these algorithms maximize the similarity of the observations within a cluster, while at the same time maximize the dissimilarity with observations in other clusters. However, nearly all of the current clustering algorithms do not take into account the actual geographic location of the observation during the clustering process. This dissertation consists of three papers which propose a method to incorporate the geographical location of an observation into the clustering algorithm, known as spatial clustering. The first paper …

Detecting Differentially Expressed Genes While Controlling The False Discovery Rate For Microarray Data, Shuo Jiao Jan 2009

Detecting Differentially Expressed Genes While Controlling The False Discovery Rate For Microarray Data, Shuo Jiao

Department of Statistics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Microarray is an important technology which enables people to investigate the expression levels of thousands of genes at the same time. One common goal of microarray data analysis is to detect differentially expressed genes while controlling the false discovery rate. This dissertation consists with four papers written to address this goal. The dissertation is organized as follows: In Chapter 1, a brief introduction of the Affymetrix GeneChip microarray technology is provided. The concept of differentially expressed genes and the definition of the false discovery rate are also introduced. In Chapter 2, a literature review of the related works on this …

Compartmentalized Approach To The Assembly Of Physical Maps, Serdar Bozdag, Timothy J. Close, Stefano Lonardi Jan 2009

Compartmentalized Approach To The Assembly Of Physical Maps, Serdar Bozdag, Timothy J. Close, Stefano Lonardi

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Physical maps have been historically one of the cornerstones of genome sequencing and map-based cloning strategies. They also support marker assisted breeding and EST mapping. The problem of building a high quality physical map is computationally challenging due to unavoidable noise in the input fingerprint data.

Results

We propose a novel compartmentalized method for the assembly of high quality physical maps from fingerprinted clones. The knowledge of genetic markers enables us to group clones into clusters so that clones in the same cluster are more likely to overlap. For each cluster of clones, a local physical map is first …

Background

High density genetic maps of plants have, nearly without exception, made use of marker datasets containing missing or questionable genotype calls derived from a variety of genic and non-genic or anonymous markers, and been presented as a single linear order of genetic loci for each linkage group. The consequences of missing or erroneous data include falsely separated markers, expansion of cM distances and incorrect marker order. These imperfections are amplified in consensus maps and problematic when fine resolution is critical including comparative genome analyses and map-based cloning. Here we provide a new paradigm, a high-density consensus genetic map of …

Preferential Utilization Of Nadph As The Endogenous Electron Donor For Nad(P)H:Quinone Oxidoreductase 1 (Nqo1) In Intact Pulmonary Arterial Endothelial Cells, Robert D. Bongard, Brian J. Lindemer, Gary S. Krenz, Marilyn P. Merker Jan 2009

Preferential Utilization Of Nadph As The Endogenous Electron Donor For Nad(P)H:Quinone Oxidoreductase 1 (Nqo1) In Intact Pulmonary Arterial Endothelial Cells, Robert D. Bongard, Brian J. Lindemer, Gary S. Krenz, Marilyn P. Merker

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

The goal was to determine whether endogenous cytosolic NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) preferentially uses NADPH or NADH in intact pulmonary arterial endothelial cells in culture. The approach was to manipulate the redox status of the NADH/NAD+ and NADPH/NADP+ redox pairs in the cytosolic compartment using treatment conditions targeting glycolysis and the pentose phosphate pathway alone or with lactate, and to evaluate the impact on the intact cell NQO1 activity. Cells were treated with 2-deoxyglucose, iodoacetate, or epiandrosterone in the absence or presence of lactate, NQO1 activity was measured in intact cells using duroquinone as the electron acceptor, and …

Dendrites, Topological Graphs, And 2-Dominance, Paul Bankston Jan 2009

Dendrites, Topological Graphs, And 2-Dominance, Paul Bankston

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

For each positive ordinal α, the reflexive and transitive binary relation of α-dominance between compacta was first defined in our paper [Mapping properties of co-existentially closed continua, Houston J. Math., 31 (2005), 1047-1063] using the ultracopower construction. Here we consider the important special case α =2, and show that any Peano compactum 2-dominated by a dendrite is itself a dendrite (with the same being true for topological graphs and trees). We also characterize the topological graphs that 2-dominate arcs (resp., simple closed curves) as those that have cut points of order 2 (resp., those that are not trees).

This research used a questionnaire survey instrument called: CLASS, Communication, Language And Statistics Survey that was applied to a total of 137 college students from a large southwestern public university, 83 of these students were self-identified as native English speakers (NOELL) and 53 were self-identified as English learner speakers (ELL) and one was dropped. This research found that in statistical instruction, there are some particular differences in behavior and learning process in the …

Complete Identification Of Permissible Sampling Rates For First-Order Sampling Of Multi-Band Bandpass Signals, Yan Wu, Daniel F. Linder Jan 2009

Complete Identification Of Permissible Sampling Rates For First-Order Sampling Of Multi-Band Bandpass Signals, Yan Wu, Daniel F. Linder

Biostatistics: Faculty Publications

The first-order sampling of multi-band bandpass signals with arbitrary band positions is considered in this paper. Gaps between the spectral sub-bands are utilized to achieve lower sampling rates than the Nyquist. The lowest possible sampling rate along with other permissible sampling rates is identified via a unique partition of the frequency axis. With the complete identification of all the permissible sampling rates, a necessary and sufficient sampling theorem for multi-band bandpass signals is presented in terms of a series of csinc-interpolators.

Evaluating Earnings Management With Derivatives And The Use Of Accounting Accruals: A Quasi Experimental Approach, Margot S. Geagon Jan 2009

Evaluating Earnings Management With Derivatives And The Use Of Accounting Accruals: A Quasi Experimental Approach, Margot S. Geagon

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Most companies listed on the S&P 500 index have reported smoothed earnings since the 1990s inspiring questions from regulators about the accuracy of financial statements. In 1998, the Financial Accounting Standards Board issued SFAS No. 133 (Accounting for Derivative Instruments and Hedging Activities) to establish accounting and reporting standards for derivative instruments. In 2002, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) was issued to eradicate earnings management activities and improve transparency in financial reporting. Although many studies have been conducted to evaluate changes in reporting requirements, much less is known about the effectiveness of these regulations on earning smoothing with discretionary accruals (DA) …

A Retrospective Study Of Dust Storms And Respiratory Hospitalizations In El Paso, Texas Using A Case-Crossover Study Design, Yanlei Peng Jan 2009

A Retrospective Study Of Dust Storms And Respiratory Hospitalizations In El Paso, Texas Using A Case-Crossover Study Design, Yanlei Peng

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Dust storms frequently occur in El Paso, Texas, but little is known about their respiratory health effects. The association between dust storm and hospitalization for respiratory illness will be studied through a case-crossover study design. The goal is to ascertain the effect of dust storms, adjusted for weather and other pollutants, and to explore the potential harmfulness for different subgroups of residents. A case-crossover study allows patients to serve as their own controls, in order to reduce confounding. The history, relationship, and application of the case-control and case-crossover study designs are reviewed in this thesis. The estimating equations for conditional …

On The Estimation Of Averages Over Infinite Intervals With An Application To Average Persistence In Population Models, Sean F. Ellermeyer Jan 2009

On The Estimation Of Averages Over Infinite Intervals With An Application To Average Persistence In Population Models, Sean F. Ellermeyer

Faculty Articles

We establish a general result for estimating the upper average of a continuous and bounded function over an infinite interval. As an application, we show that a previously studied model of microbial growth in a chemostat with time–varying nutrient input admits solutions (populations) that exhibit weak persistence but not weak average persistence.

Testing For Sphericity In A Fixed Effects Panel Data Model (Revised July 2009), Badi H. Baltagi, Qu Feng, Chihwa Kao Jan 2009

Testing For Sphericity In A Fixed Effects Panel Data Model (Revised July 2009), Badi H. Baltagi, Qu Feng, Chihwa Kao

Center for Policy Research

This paper proposes a test for sphericity in a fixed effects panel data model. It uses the Random Matrix Theory based approach of Ledoit and Wolf (2002) to test for sphericity of the error terms in a fixed effects panel model with a large number of cross-sectional units and time series observations. Since the errors are unobservable, the residuals from the fixed effects regression are used. The limiting distribution of the proposed test statistic is derived. Additionally, its finite sample properties are examined using Monte Carlo simulations.

Fitting Weibull Acd Models To High Frequency Transactions Data : A Semi-Parametric Approach Based On Estimating Functions, Kok Haur Ng, David E. Allen, Shelton Peiris Jan 2009

Fitting Weibull Acd Models To High Frequency Transactions Data : A Semi-Parametric Approach Based On Estimating Functions, Kok Haur Ng, David E. Allen, Shelton Peiris

Research outputs pre 2011

Autoregressive conditional duration (ACD) models play an important role in financial modeling. This paper considers the estimation of the Weibull ACD model using a semiparametric approach based on the theory of estimating functions (EF). We apply the EF and the maximum likelihood (ML) methods to a data set given in Tsay (2003, p203) to compare these two methods. It is shown that the EF approach is easier to apply in practice and gives better estimates than the MLE. Results show that the EF approach is compatible with the ML method in parameter estimation. Furthermore, the computation speed for the EF …

A Semiparametric Approach To A Nonlinear Acd Model, Pipat Wongsaart, Jiti Gao, David E. Allen Jan 2009

A Semiparametric Approach To A Nonlinear Acd Model, Pipat Wongsaart, Jiti Gao, David E. Allen

Research outputs pre 2011

We introduce in this paper a new semiparametric approach to a nonlinear ACD model, namely the Semiparametric ACD (SEMI-ACD) model. This new model is more flexible in the sense that the data are allowed to speak for themselves, without a hypothetical assumption being imposed arbitrarily on its key component. Moreover, it enables a much more thorough examination of the intertemporal importance of the conditional duration on the ACD process. Our experimental analysis suggests that the new model possesses a sound asymptotic character, while its performance is also robust across data generating processes and assumptions about the conditional distribution of the …

Multiple Imputation To Correct For Measurement Error In Admixture Estimates In Genetic Structured Association Testing, Miguel A. Padilla, Jamin Divers, Laura K. Vaughan, David B. Allison, Hemant K. Tiwari Jan 2009

Multiple Imputation To Correct For Measurement Error In Admixture Estimates In Genetic Structured Association Testing, Miguel A. Padilla, Jamin Divers, Laura K. Vaughan, David B. Allison, Hemant K. Tiwari

Psychology Faculty Publications

Objectives: Structured association tests ( SAT), like any statistical model, assumes that all variables are measured without error. Measurement error can bias parameter estimates and confound residual variance in linear models. It has been shown that admixture estimates can be contaminated with measurement error causing SAT models to suffer from the same afflictions. Multiple imputation (MI) is presented as a viable tool for correcting measurement error problems in SAT linear models with emphasis on correcting measurement error contaminated admixture estimates. Methods: Several MI methods are presented and compared, via simulation, in terms of controlling Type I error rates for both …

A Comparison Of Methods For Generating Bivariate Non-Normally Distributed Random Variables, Jaimee E. Stewart Jan 2009

A Comparison Of Methods For Generating Bivariate Non-Normally Distributed Random Variables, Jaimee E. Stewart

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many distributions of multivariate data in the real world follow a non-normal model with distributions being skewed and/or heavy tailed. In studies in which multivariate non-normal distributions are needed, it is important for simulations of those variables to provide data that is close to the desired parameters while also being fast and easy to perform. Three algorithms for generating multivariate non-normal distributions are reviewed for accuracy, speed and simplicity. They are the Fleishman Power Method, the Fifth-Order Polynomial Transformation Method, and the Generalized Lambda Distribution Method. Simulations were run in order to compare the three methods by how well they …

Research Design And Statistical Applications, Grayson Holmbeck, Kathy Zebracki, Katie Mcgoron Jan 2009

Research Design And Statistical Applications, Grayson Holmbeck, Kathy Zebracki, Katie Mcgoron

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

What is the role of research in the field of pediatric psychology? To answer this question, it is useful to imagine what clinical practice would be like if we had no research foundation for our work. Without such a foundation, practitioners would have no basis for suggesting specific interventions or understanding why some interventions are successful and why others fail. Similarly, without a research foundation, assessments conducted with children would be based on unstandardized assessment methods, and no normative data would be available. Clearly, most of us would agree that scientific research is the foundation of pediatric psychology, including all …

Statistical Inferences For Functions Of Parameters Of Several Pareto And Exponential Populations With Application In Data Traffic, Sumith Gunasekera Jan 2009

Statistical Inferences For Functions Of Parameters Of Several Pareto And Exponential Populations With Application In Data Traffic, Sumith Gunasekera

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In this dissertation, we discuss the usability and applicability of three statistical inferential frameworks--namely, the Classical Method, which is sometimes referred to as the Conventional or the Frequentist Method, based on the approximate large sample approach, the Generalized Variable Method based on the exact generalized p -value approach, and the Bayesian Method based on prior densities--for solving existing problems in the area of parametric estimation. These inference procedures are discussed through Pareto and exponential distributions that are widely used to model positive random variables relevant to social, scientific, actuarial, insurance, finance, investments, banking, and many other types of observable phenomena. …
