Operating Characteristics Of The Dif Mimic Approach Using Jöreskog’S Covariance Matrix With Ml And Wls Estimation For Short Scales, Michaela N. Gelin, Bruno D. Zumbo
Operating Characteristics Of The Dif Mimic Approach Using Jöreskog’S Covariance Matrix With Ml And Wls Estimation For Short Scales, Michaela N. Gelin, Bruno D. Zumbo
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Type I error rate of a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach for investigating differential item functioning (DIF) in short scales was studied. Muthén’s SEM model for DIF was examined using a covariance matrix (Jöreskog, 2002). It is conditioned on the latent variable, while testing the effect of the grouping variable over-and-above the underlying latent variable. Thus, it is a multiple-indicators, multiple-causes (MIMIC) DIF model. Type I error rates were determined using data reflective of short scales with ordinal item response formats typically found in the social and behavioral sciences. Results indicate Type I error rates for the DIF MIMIC model, …
Do Juries Add Value? Evidence From An Empirical Study Of Jury Trial Waiver Clauses In Large Corporate Contracts, Theodore Eisenberg, Geoffrey P. Miller
Do Juries Add Value? Evidence From An Empirical Study Of Jury Trial Waiver Clauses In Large Corporate Contracts, Theodore Eisenberg, Geoffrey P. Miller
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
We study jury trial waivers in a data set of 2,816 contracts contained as exhibits in Form 8-K filings by reporting corporations during 2002. Because these contracts are associated with events deemed material to the financial condition of SEC-reporting firms, they likely are carefully negotiated by sophisticated, well-informed parties and thus provide presumptive evidence about the value associated with the availability of jury trials. A minority of contracts, about 20 percent, waived jury trials. An additional 9 percent of contracts had arbitration clauses that effectively preclude jury trials though the reason for arbitration clauses need not specifically relate to juries. …
Inference On Overlapping Coefficients In Two Exponential Populations, Mohammad F. Al-Saleh, Hani M. Samawi
Inference On Overlapping Coefficients In Two Exponential Populations, Mohammad F. Al-Saleh, Hani M. Samawi
Biostatistics: Faculty Publications
Three measures of overlap, namely Matusita’s measureρ , Morisita’s measure λ and Weitzman’s measure Δ are investigated in this article for two exponential populations with different means. It is well that the estimators of those measures of overlap are biased. The bias is of these estimators depends on the unknown overlap parameters. There are no closed-form, exact formulas, for those estimators variances or their exact sampling distributions. Monte Carlo evaluations are used to study the bias and precision of the proposed overlap measures. Bootstrap method and Taylor series approximation are used to construct confidence intervals for the overlap measures.
Accounting For Additional Heterogeneity: A Theoretic Extension Of An Extant Economic Model, Bradley John Barney
Accounting For Additional Heterogeneity: A Theoretic Extension Of An Extant Economic Model, Bradley John Barney
Theses and Dissertations
The assumption in economics of a representative agent is often made. However, it is a very rigid assumption. Hall and Jones (2004b) presented an economic model that essentially provided for a representative agent for each age group in determining the group's health level function. Our work seeks to extend their theoretical version of the model by allowing for two representative agents for each age—one for each of “Healthy” and “Sick” risk-factor groups—to allow for additional heterogeneity in the populace. The approach to include even more risk-factor groups is also briefly discussed. While our “extended” theoretical model is not applied directly …
Applying Bayesian Ordinal Regression To Icap Maladaptive Behavior Subscales, Edward P. Johnson
Applying Bayesian Ordinal Regression To Icap Maladaptive Behavior Subscales, Edward P. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
This paper develops a Bayesian ordinal regression model for the maladaptive subscales of the Inventory for Client and Agency Planning (ICAP). Because the maladaptive behavior section of the ICAP contains ordinal data, current analysis strategies combine all the subscales into three indices, making the data more interval in nature. Regular MANOVA tools are subsequently used to create a regression model for these indices. This paper uses ordinal regression to analyze each original scale separately. The sample consists of applicants for aid from Utah's Division of Services for Persons with Disabilities. Each applicant fills out the Scales of Independent Behavior"”Revised (SIB-R) …
Nonparametric And Semiparametric Group Sequential Methods For Comparing Accuracy Of Diagnostic Tests, Liansheng Tang, Scott S. Emerson, Xiao-Hua Zhou
Nonparametric And Semiparametric Group Sequential Methods For Comparing Accuracy Of Diagnostic Tests, Liansheng Tang, Scott S. Emerson, Xiao-Hua Zhou
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Comparison of the accuracy of two diagnostic tests using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves from two diagnostic tests has been typically conducted using fixed sample designs. On the other hand, the human experimentation inherent in a comparison of diagnostic modalities argues for periodic monitoring of the accruing data to address many issues related to the ethics and efficiency of the medical study. To date, very little research has been done in the use of sequential sampling plans for comparative ROC studies, even when these studies may use expensive and unsafe diagnostic procedures. In this paper, we propose a nonparametric …
A Bayesian Image Analysis Of The Change In Tumor/Brain Contrast Uptake Induced By Radiation Via Reversible Jump Markov Chain Monte Carlo, Xiaoxi Zhang, Tim Johnson, Roderick J.A. Little
A Bayesian Image Analysis Of The Change In Tumor/Brain Contrast Uptake Induced By Radiation Via Reversible Jump Markov Chain Monte Carlo, Xiaoxi Zhang, Tim Johnson, Roderick J.A. Little
The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
This work is motivated by a pilot study on the change in tumor/brain contrast uptake induced by radiation via quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging. The results inform the optimal timing of administering chemotherapy in the context of radiotherapy. A noticeable feature of the data is spatial heterogeneity. The tumor is physiologically and pathologically distinct from surrounding healthy tissue. Also, the tumor itself is usually highly heterogeneous. We employ a Gaussian Hidden Markov Random Field model that respects the above features. The model introduces a latent layer of discrete labels from an Markov Random Field (MRF) governed by a spatial regularization parameter. …
A Note On Targeted Maximum Likelihood And Right Censored Data, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Daniel Rubin
A Note On Targeted Maximum Likelihood And Right Censored Data, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Daniel Rubin
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
A popular way to estimate an unknown parameter is with substitution, or evaluating the parameter at a likelihood based fit of the data generating density. In many cases, such estimators have substantial bias and can fail to converge at the parametric rate. van der Laan and Rubin (2006) introduced targeted maximum likelihood learning, removing these shackles from substitution estimators, which were made in full agreement with the locally efficient estimating equation procedures as presented in Robins and Rotnitzsky (1992) and van der Laan and Robins (2003). This note illustrates how targeted maximum likelihood can be applied in right censored data …

This is the detailed technical report that accompanies the paper “Analyzing Direct Effects in Randomized Trials with Secondary Interventions: An Application to HIV Prevention Trials” (an unpublished, technical report version of which is available online at http://www.bepress.com/ucbbiostat/paper223).
The version here gives full details of the models for the time-dependent analysis, and presents further results in the data analysis section. The Methods for Improving Reproductive Health in Africa (MIRA) trial is a recently completed randomized trial that investigated the effect of diaphragm and lubricant gel use in reducing HIV infection among susceptible women. 5,045 women were randomly assigned to either the …
A Smoothing Approach To Data Masking, Yijie Zhous, Francesca Dominici, Thomas A. Louis
A Smoothing Approach To Data Masking, Yijie Zhous, Francesca Dominici, Thomas A. Louis
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
Individual-level data are often not publicly available due to confidentiality. Instead, masked data are released for public use. However, analyses performed using masked data may produce invalid statistical results such as biased parameter estimates or incorrect standard errors. In this paper, we propose a data masking method using spatial smoothing, and we investigate the bias of parameter estimates resulting from analyses using the masked data for Generalized Linear Models (GLM). The method allows for varying both the form and the degree of masking by utilizing a smoothing weight function and a smoothness parameter. We show that data masking by using …
Implementation Of Uncertainty Propagation In Triton/Keno: To Support The Global Nuclear Energy Partnership, Charlotta Sanders, Denis Beller
Implementation Of Uncertainty Propagation In Triton/Keno: To Support The Global Nuclear Energy Partnership, Charlotta Sanders, Denis Beller
Reactor Campaign (TRP)
Monte Carlo methods are beginning to be used for three-dimensional fuel depletion analyses to compute various quantities of interest, including isotopic compositions of used fuel.1 The TRITON control module, available in the SCALE 5.1 code system, can perform three dimensional (3-D) depletion calculations using either the KENO V.a or KENO-VI Monte Carlo transport codes, as well as the two-dimensional (2- D) NEWT discrete ordinates code. For typical reactor systems, the neutron flux is not spatially uniform. For Monte Carlo simulations, this results in non-uniform statistical uncertainties in the computed reaction rates. For spatial regions where the flux is low, e.g., …
Monaco/Mavric Evaluation For Facility Shielding And Dose Rate Analysis: To Support The Global Nuclear Energy Partnership, Charlotta Sanders, Denis Beller
Monaco/Mavric Evaluation For Facility Shielding And Dose Rate Analysis: To Support The Global Nuclear Energy Partnership, Charlotta Sanders, Denis Beller
Reactor Campaign (TRP)
Monte Carlo methods are used to compute fluxes or dose rates over large areas using mesh tallies. For problems that demand that the uncertainty in each mesh cell be less than some set maximum, computation time is controlled by the cell with the largest uncertainty. This issue becomes quite troublesome in deep-penetration problems, and advanced variance reduction techniques are required to obtain reasonable uncertainties over large areas.
In this project the MAVRIC sequence will be evaluated along with the Monte Carlo engine Monaco to investigate its effectiveness and usefulness in facility shielding and dose rate analyses. A previously MCNP-evaluated cask …

An Experimental Technique For The Evaluation Of Strain Dependent Material Properties Of Hard Coatings, Shad A. Reed, Anthony N. Palazotto, William P. Baker
Faculty Publications
A novel vibration experiment consisting of a free-free boundary condition, an electromagnetic excitation source, a vacuum chamber, and a laser vibrometer based surface measurement system has been developed that permits high levels of excitation on highly damped specimens with a minimal amount of unwanted systematic error. While some of the aspects of this experiment are not unique, when combined with a processing technique that accounts for the nonlinearities present in the system, this experiment permits, accurate measurement of strain dependent stiffness and damping properties of hard coatings at high strain levels. This procedure has been demonstrated using a titanium beam …
Optimal Propensity Score Stratification, Jessica A. Myers, Thomas A. Louis
Optimal Propensity Score Stratification, Jessica A. Myers, Thomas A. Louis
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
Stratifying on propensity score in observational studies of treatment is a common technique used to control for bias in treatment assignment; however, there have been few studies of the relative efficiency of the various ways of forming those strata. The standard method is to use the quintiles of propensity score to create subclasses, but this choice is not based on any measure of performance either observed or theoretical. In this paper, we investigate the optimal subclassification of propensity scores for estimating treatment effect with respect to mean squared error of the estimate. We consider the optimal formation of subclasses within …
Multiple Model Evaluation Absent The Gold Standard Via Model Combination, Edwin J. Iversen, Jr., Giovanni Parmigiani, Sining Chen
Multiple Model Evaluation Absent The Gold Standard Via Model Combination, Edwin J. Iversen, Jr., Giovanni Parmigiani, Sining Chen
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
We describe a method for evaluating an ensemble of predictive models given a sample of observations comprising the model predictions and the outcome event measured with error. Our formulation allows us to simultaneously estimate measurement error parameters, true outcome — aka the gold standard — and a relative weighting of the predictive scores. We describe conditions necessary to estimate the gold standard and for these estimates to be calibrated and detail how our approach is related to, but distinct from, standard model combination techniques. We apply our approach to data from a study to evaluate a collection of BRCA1/BRCA2 gene …
Image Reconstruction In Multi-Channel Model Under Gaussian Noise, Veera Holdai, Alexander Korostelev
Image Reconstruction In Multi-Channel Model Under Gaussian Noise, Veera Holdai, Alexander Korostelev
Mathematics Research Reports
The image reconstruction from noisy data is studied. A nonparametric boundary function is estimated from observations in N independent channels in Gaussian white noise. In each channel the image and the background intensities are unknown. They define a non-identifiable nuisance "parameter" that slows down the typical minimax rate of convergence. The large sample asymptotics of the minimax risk is found and an asymptotically optimal estimator for boundary function is suggested.
A Statistical Model To Forecast Short-Term Atlantic Hurricane Intensity, Kevin Law, Jay S. Hobgood
A Statistical Model To Forecast Short-Term Atlantic Hurricane Intensity, Kevin Law, Jay S. Hobgood
Geography Faculty Research
An alternative 24-h statistical hurricane intensity model is presented and verified for 13 hurricanes during the 2004–05 seasons. The model uses a new method involving a discriminant function analysis (DFA) to select from a collection of multiple regression equations. These equations were developed to predict the future 24-h wind speed increase and the 24-h pressure drop that were constructed from a dataset of 103 hurricanes from 1988 to 2003 that utilized 25 predictors of rapid intensification. The accuracy of the 24-h wind speed increase models was tested and compared with the official National Hurricane Center (NHC) 24-h intensity forecasts, which …

A Software-Based Trust Framework For Distributed Industrial Management Systems, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed, Mohammad Zulkernine, Steve Wolfe
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
One of the major problems in industrial security management is that most organizations or enterprises do not provide adequate guidelines or well-defined policy with respect to trust management, and trust is still an afterthought in most security engineering projects. With the increase of handheld devices, managers of business organizations tend to use handheld devices to access the information systems. However, the connection or access to an information system requires appropriate level of trust. In this paper, we present a flexible, manageable, and configurable software-based trust framework for the handheld devices of mangers to access distributed information systems. The presented framework …
Radical Impact Of Change In Actions And Confidence Index On Reverse Decision Making An Application Based Study, Swatee Trimbak Paithankar
Radical Impact Of Change In Actions And Confidence Index On Reverse Decision Making An Application Based Study, Swatee Trimbak Paithankar
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
While making decisions under uncertainty, people are often unaware of the logical approach to form the decision process. It is assumed that collecting details, analyzing and evaluating data is enough to make 'proper' decisions. However, past research in the decision making arena has significantly validated that there exists a class of decision problems which is complex, ill-structured and not defined to the level where decision makers can draw logical conclusions based on existing traditional decision approaches. RDM (reverse decision making), one of the novel approaches of decision making under conditions of uncertainty, has shown potential towards addressing some of these …

The Methods for Improving Reproductive Health in Africa (MIRA) trial is a recently completed randomized trial that investigated the effect of diaphragm and lubricant gel use in reducing HIV infection among susceptible women. 5,045 women were randomly assigned to either the active treatment arm or not. Additionally, all subjects in both arms received intensive condom counselling and provision, the "gold standard" HIV prevention barrier method. There was much lower reported condom use in the intervention arm than in the control arm, making it difficult to answer important public health questions based solely on the intention-to-treat analysis. We adapt an analysis …
Roc Surfaces In The Presence Of Verification Bias, Yueh-Yun Chi, Xiao-Hua (Andrew) Zhou
Roc Surfaces In The Presence Of Verification Bias, Yueh-Yun Chi, Xiao-Hua (Andrew) Zhou
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
In diagnostic medicine, the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) surface is one of the established tools for assessing the accuracy of a diagnostic test in discriminating three disease states, and the volume under the ROC surface has served as a summary index for diagnostic accuracy. In practice, the selection for definitive disease examination may be based on initial test measurements, and induces verification bias in the assessment. We propose here a nonparametric likelihood-based approach to construct the empirical ROC surface in the presence of differential verification, and to estimate the volume under the ROC surface. Estimators of the standard deviation are …

Asymptotic Behavior Of The Global Attractors To The Boussinesq System For Rayleigh-Bénard Convection At Large Prandtl Number, Xiaoming Wang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We study asymptotic behavior of the global attractors to the Boussinesq system for Rayleigh-Bénard convection at large Prandtl number. in particular, we show that the global attractors to the Boussinesq system for Rayleigh-Bénard convection converge to that of the infinite-Prandtl- number model for convection as the Prandtl number approaches infinity. This offers partial justification of the infinite-Prandtl-number model for convection as a valid simplified model for convection at large Prandtl number even in the long-time regime. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Inference For Survival Curves With Informatively Coarsened Discrete Event-Time Data: Application To Alive, Michelle Shardell, Daniel O. Scharfstein, David Vlahov, Noya Galai
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
In many prospective studies, including AIDS Link to the Intravenous Experience (ALIVE), researchers are interested in comparing event-time distributions (e.g.,for human immunodeficiency virus seroconversion) between a small number of groups (e.g., risk behavior categories). However, these comparisons are complicated by participants missing visits or attending visits off schedule and seroconverting during this absence. Such data are interval-censored, or more generally, coarsened. Most analysis procedures rely on the assumption of non-informative censoring, a special case of coarsening at random that may produce biased results if not valid. Our goal is to perform inference for estimated survival functions across a small number of …
The Shift From Defined Benefit Pensions To 401(K) Plans And The Pension Assets Of The Baby Boom Cohort, James Poterba, Steven Venti, David A. Wise
The Shift From Defined Benefit Pensions To 401(K) Plans And The Pension Assets Of The Baby Boom Cohort, James Poterba, Steven Venti, David A. Wise
Dartmouth Scholarship
The rise of 401(k) plans and the decline of defined benefit plans will have an important effect on the wealth of future retirees. Changing demographic structure also will affect the aggregate stock of retirement wealth. We project the stock of assets held in retirement plans and the average retirement saving of retirees through 2040. Our projections show large increases in wealth at retirement, especially if the returns on corporate equities are comparable with historical returns. Retirement wealth will grow, however, even if equity returns fall substantially below their historical level.

Confidence Intervals For Population Size In A Capture-Recapture Problem., Xiao Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In a single capture-recapture problem, two new Wilson methods for interval estimation of population size are derived. Classical Chapman interval, Wilson and Wilson-cc intervals are examined and compared in terms of their expected interval width and exact coverage properties in two models. The new approach performs better than the Chapman in each model. Bayesian analysis also gives a different way to estimate population size.
