Prediction Intervals Based On Partial Observations For Some Discrete Distributions, Lee J. Bain, Jagdish K. Patel Jan 1993

Prediction Intervals Based On Partial Observations For Some Discrete Distributions, Lee J. Bain, Jagdish K. Patel

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Prediction limits of the following type are considered for the binomial, hypergeometric, and negative-binomial distributions. For the binomial distribution, suppose Xr successes have occurred in the first r trials, and based on this partial information it is desired to predict the total number of successes Xs (r < s), which will have occurred by trial s. Similar results are considered for the Poisson and negative-binomial distributions. The results are expressed in terms of well-known distributions which have been tabulated, but it is quite tedious to carry out the procedures based on available tables. Normal (Gaussian) approximations are provided which makes these methods convenient to apply. © 1993 IEEE

Program Review 1993: Self Study Report Department Of Biometry

Department of Statistics: Reports and Administrative Materials

The CSRS review team applauds the statistical expertise of the Biometry Department which began as the statistical Laboratory in 1957 and culminated with the current academic Department of Biometry. This enhancement has been highlighted by a significant increase in the number of faculty and staff, the initiation of a Master of Science program, and the provision of graduate assistant stipends. With the presence of seven faculty, the imminent increase from seven to fifteen graduate students, the establishment of statistical consulting with numerous IANR faculty, and the diverse research and teaching expertise of the faculty, the department is poised to provide …

Optimal Control And Differential Games With Measures, E. N. Barron, R. Jensen, J. L. Menaldi Jan 1993

Optimal Control And Differential Games With Measures, E. N. Barron, R. Jensen, J. L. Menaldi

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

We consider control problems with trajectories which involve ordinary measureable control functions and controls which are measures. The payoff involves a running cost in time and a running cost against the control measures. In the optimal control problem we are trying to minimize this payoff with both controls. In the differential game problem we are trying to minimize the cost with the ordinary controls assuming that the measure controls are chosen to maximize the cost. We will characterize the value functions in both cases using viscosity solution theory by deriving the Bellman and Isaacs equations.

Studies Of Electron-Beam Penetration And Free-Carrier Generation In Diamond Films, R. P. Joshi, K. H. Schoenbach, C. Molina, W. W. Hofer Jan 1993

Studies Of Electron-Beam Penetration And Free-Carrier Generation In Diamond Films, R. P. Joshi, K. H. Schoenbach, C. Molina, W. W. Hofer

Bioelectrics Publications

Experimental observations of the energy‐dependent electron‐beam penetration in type II‐A natural diamond are reported. The experimental data are compared with results obtained from numerical Monte Carlo simulations, and the results are in very good agreement. The results also reveal that a threshold energy of about 125 keV is necessary for complete penetration for a 35 μm sample. It is found that over the 30–180 keV range, the energy dependence of the penetration depth and total path length exhibits a power‐law relation. Monte Carlo simulations have also been performed to investigate the excess carrier‐generation profiles within diamond for a set of …

The Use Of A Factory Simulation To Evaluate A Flexible Control Structure For Integrated Manufacturing, Ling Ling Pan Jan 1993

The Use Of A Factory Simulation To Evaluate A Flexible Control Structure For Integrated Manufacturing, Ling Ling Pan

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Once a control structure for an integrated manufacturing system is decided upon, manufacturing activities are limited by that structure. A flexible control structure is presented as an approach for accommodating a variety of manufacturing activities, without being limited to a single control structure. A flexible control structure is one that allows multiple types of control structure in the manufacturing process. For example, both hierarchical and non-hierarchical structures may be used in a flexible structure. The properties of a flexible control structure are discussed from the point of view of graph theory.

Control structures for automated manufacturing are difficult to evaluate …

Multidimensional Approach To Implementation Of Continuous Process Improvement Utilizing Small Run Analysis In A Shipyard Environment, Paul Ray Hollandsworth Jan 1993

Multidimensional Approach To Implementation Of Continuous Process Improvement Utilizing Small Run Analysis In A Shipyard Environment, Paul Ray Hollandsworth

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Nationally, both public and private shipyards are experiencing a high rework rate (over 40%) in the fabrication of plug connectors used for electronic systems onboard Navy vessels. The shipyard's survival depends on acquiring the elements necessary to maintain a major industry in a position of continuous improvement that produces a better product than their competitors, at less cost, in a safe manner, and on schedule.

This research addresses the complex problem of how to introduce quality control methodologies within a job shop environment that assists in identifying variables that influence the rework rate of plug fabrication process over a four …

Computational Problems With Binomial Failure Rate Model And Incomplete Common Cause Failure Reliability Data, Paul H. Kvam Jan 1993

Computational Problems With Binomial Failure Rate Model And Incomplete Common Cause Failure Reliability Data, Paul H. Kvam

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

In estimating the reliability of a system of components, it is ordinarily assumed that the component lifetimes are independently distributed. This assumption usually alleviates the difficulty of analyzing complex systems, but it is seldom true that the failure of one component in an interactive system has no effect on the lifetimes of the other components. Often, two or more components will fail simultaneously due to a common cause event. Such an incident is called a common cause failure (CCF), and is now recognized as an important contribution to system failure in various applications of reliability. We examine current methods for …

Pseudobases In Direct Powers Of An Algebra, Paul Bankston Jan 1993

Pseudobases In Direct Powers Of An Algebra, Paul Bankston

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

A subset P of an abstract algebra A is a pseudobasis if every function from P into A extends uniquely to an endomorphism on A. A is called K-free has a pseudobasis of cardinality K; A is minimally free if A has a pseudobasis. (The 0-free algebras are "rigid" in the strong sense; the 1-free groups are always abelian, and are precisely the additive groups of E-rings.) Our interest here is in the existence of pseudobases in direct powers AI of an algebra A. On the positive side, if A is a rigid …

Strong Large Deviation And Local Limit Theorms, Narasinga Rao Chaganty, Jayaram Sethuraman Jan 1993

Strong Large Deviation And Local Limit Theorms, Narasinga Rao Chaganty, Jayaram Sethuraman

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Most large deviation results give asymptotic expressions for log P(Yn ≥ yn), where the event {Yn ≥ yn} is a large deviation event, that is, P(Yn ≥ yn) goes to 0 exponentially fast. We refer to such results as weak large deviation results. In this paper we obtain strong large deviation results for arbitrary random variables {Yn}, that is, we obtain asymptotic expressions for P(Yn ≥ yn), where {Yn ≥ yn} is a large deviation event. These strong large deviation results …

Products Liability Cases On Appeal: An Empirical Study, Theodore Eisenberg, James A. Henderson Jr. Jan 1993

Products Liability Cases On Appeal: An Empirical Study, Theodore Eisenberg, James A. Henderson Jr.

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This article analyzes 1,100 opinions to find the determinants of products liability cases on appeal in state and federal courts. The strongest predictor of plaintiff success on appeal is whether the plaintiff prevailed in a jury trial. Other important factors are the defendant's status as manufacturer, wholesaler, or successor corporation; the plaintiffs degree of injury; and whether the case involved a failure-to-warn claim. The existence of a comparative negligence regime increases the tendency of appellate courts to affirm lower courts. These results allow rejection of a simple model in which pre- and posttrial settlement behavior filters out cases in which …

Reliability Trend Analyses With Statistical Confidence Limits Using The Luke Reliability Trend Chart, Stephen R. Luke Jan 1993

Reliability Trend Analyses With Statistical Confidence Limits Using The Luke Reliability Trend Chart, Stephen R. Luke

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In electronic systems, it is interesting to understand exactly how the reliability is changing with time. Dynamic performance changes when a system passes from infant mortality stage into useful life phase and when the system passes from useful life phase into wearout phase. Dynamic performance also changes when the system is redesigned or when the system is acted on by a number of other outside forces such as a change in maintenance policy, escalation of alignment problems, or a change in training program. It is important to know when a system is changing dynamically in order to assess design, policy …
