Sufficient Dimension Folding In Regression Via Distance Covariance For Matrix‐Valued Predictors, Wenhui Sheng, Qingcong Yuan
Sufficient Dimension Folding In Regression Via Distance Covariance For Matrix‐Valued Predictors, Wenhui Sheng, Qingcong Yuan
Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications
In modern data, when predictors are matrix/array‐valued, building a reasonable model is much more difficult due to the complicate structure. However, dimension folding that reduces the predictor dimensions while keeps its structure is critical in helping to build a useful model. In this paper, we develop a new sufficient dimension folding method using distance covariance for regression in such a case. The method works efficiently without strict assumptions on the predictors. It is model‐free and nonparametric, but neither smoothing techniques nor selection of tuning parameters is needed. Moreover, it works for both univariate and multivariate response cases. In addition, we …

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications
In this paper, we propose and study a new class of continuous distributions called the Marshall-Olkin exponentiated generalized G (MOEG-G) family which extends the Marshall-Olkin-G family introduced by Marshall and Olkin [A. W. Marshall, I. Olkin, Biometrika 84 (1997), 641-652]. Some of its mathematical properties including explicit expressions for the ordinary and incomplete moments, generating function, order statistics and probability weighted moments are derived. Some characteristics of the new family are presented. Maximum likelihood estimation for the model parameters under uncensored and censored data is addressed in Section 5 as well as a simulation study to assess the performance of …

We propose a lifetime distribution with flexible hazard rate called cubic rank transmuted modified Burr III (CRTMBIII) distribution. We develop the proposed distribution on the basis of the cubic ranking transmutation map. The density function of CRTMBIII is symmetrical, right-skewed, left-skewed, exponential, arc, J and bimodal shaped. The flexible hazard rate of the proposed model can accommodate almost all types of shapes such as unimodal, bimodal, arc, increasing, decreasing, decreasing-increasing-decreasing, inverted bathtub and modified bathtub. To show the importance of proposed model, we present mathematical properties such as moments, incomplete moments, inequality measures, residual life function and stress strength reliability …

"Big Ideas" In Secondary Mathematics Education Programs, Eryn Stehr, Hyunyi Jung, Jill Newton
Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications
Although research and policy documents provide recommendations to inform secondary mathematics teacher preparation, no single study has addressed the “big ideas” of courses in multiple programs and how those big ideas may be interpreted through the lens of recent research and policy documents. To answer this need, we focused on big ideas and course objectives from three courses (i.e., Linear Algebra, Secondary Mathematics Methods, and Teaching in a Diversity Society) taught in four secondary mathematics programs. Major themes emerged related to mathematical content, pedagogy, and issues of equity. We describe findings related to big ideas, course objectives, and their connections …

Engaging with mathematical modeling can support learners to collaboratively explore mathematics in integrated ways as well as generate mathematical ideas and representations that may be useful in everyday life. Although several studies provide diverse insights into teaching and learning mathematical modeling, research has yet to be conducted on the mathematical modeling learning opportunities available to secondary mathematics preservice teachers (PTs) in mathematics and education courses in teacher education programs. This study investigates the mathematical modeling learning opportunities reported by 48 instructors and ten focus groups of 37 PTs. Multiple data sources (e.g., interview transcripts, syllabi, tasks, and exams) collected from …

The design and performance of the active complex electrode (ACE1) electrical impedance tomography system for single-ended phasic voltage measurements are presented. The design of the hardware and calibration procedures allows for reconstruction of conductivity and permittivity images. Phase measurement is achieved with the ACE1 active electrode circuit which measures the amplitude and phase of the voltage and the applied current at the location at which current is injected into the body. An evaluation of the system performance under typical operating conditions includes details of demodulation and calibration and an in-depth look at insightful metrics, such as signal-to-noise ratio variations during …

A new family of distributions called the Topp-Leone generalized odd log-logistic-G family is introduced and studied. We provide some mathematical properties of the new family including ordinary and incomplete moments, generating function and order statistics. We assess the performance of the maximum likelihood estimators in terms of biases and mean squared errors by means of two simulation studies. Finally, the usefulness of the family is il lustrated by means of two real data sets. The new model provides consistently better fits than other competitive models for these data sets.

Any space homeomorphic to one of the standard subcontinua of the Stone-Čech remainder of the real half-line is called an ultra-arc. Alternatively, an ultra-arc may be viewed as an ultracopower of the real unit interval via a free ultrafilter on a countable set. It is known that any continuum of weight is a continuous image of any ultra-arc; in this paper we address the problem of which continua are continuous images under special maps. Here are some of the results we present.

We study some mathematical properties of a new generator of continuous distributions called the Odd Nadarajah-Haghighi (ONH) family. In particular, three special models in this family are investigated, namely the ONH gamma, beta and Weibull distributions. The family density function is given as a linear combination of exponentiated densities. Further, we propose a bivariate extension and various characterization results of the new family. We determine the maximum likelihood estimates of ONH parameters for complete and censored data. We provide a simulation study to verify the precision of these estimates. We illustrate the performance of the new family by means of …

Standard analyses applied to genome-wide association data are well designed to detect additive effects of moderate strength. However, the power for standard genome-wide association study (GWAS) analyses to identify effects from recessive diplotypes is not typically high. We proposed and conducted a gene-based compound heterozygosity test to reveal additional genes underlying complex diseases. With this approach applied to iron overload, a strong association signal was identified between the fibroblast growth factor–encoding gene, FGF6, and hemochromatosis in the central Wisconsin population. Functional validation showed that fibroblast growth factor 6 protein (FGF-6) regulates iron homeostasis and induces transcriptional regulation of hepcidin. …

In this paper, we introduce a new three-parameter generalized version of the Gompertz model called the odd log-logistic Gompertz (OLLGo) distribution. It includes some well-known lifetime distributions such as Gompertz (Go) and odd log-logistic exponential (OLLE) as special sub-models. This new distribution is quite flexible and can be used effectively in modeling survival data and reliability problems. It can have a decreasing, increasing and bathtub-shaped failure rate function depending on its parameters. Some mathematical properties of the new distribution, such as closed-form expressions for the density, cumulative distribution, hazard rate function, the kth order moment, moment generating function and …

A new four-parameter probability model, referred to the exponentiated Weibull Rayleigh (EWR) distribution, is introduced. Essential statistical properties of the distribution are considered. The maximum likelihood estimators of population parameters are given in case of complete sample. Simulation study is carried out to estimate the model parameters of EWR distribution. Additionally, parameter estimators are given in case of Type II censored samples. We come up with two applications to confirm the usefulness of the proposed distribution.

This article focuses on the clustering problem based on Dirichlet process (DP) mixtures. To model both time invariant and temporal patterns, different from other existing clustering methods, the proposed semi-parametric model is flexible in that both the common and unique patterns are taken into account simultaneously. Furthermore, by jointly clustering subjects and the associated variables, the intrinsic complex shared patterns among subjects and among variables are expected to be captured. The number of clusters and cluster assignments are directly inferred with the use of DP. Simulation studies illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. An application to wheal size data …

The goal of this work is to introduce a new family of continuous distributions with a strong physical application. Some statistical properties are derived, and certain useful characterizations of the proposed family distributions are presented. Five applications are provided to illustrate the importance of the new family. A modified goodness-of-fit test for the new family in complete data case are investigated via two examples. We propose, as a first step, the construction of Nikulin-Rao-Robson statistic based on chi-squared fit tests for the new family in the case of complete data. The new test is based on the Nikulin-Rao-Robson statistic separately …

In this paper, we develop a method for the simultaneous estimation of spectral density functions (SDFs) for a collection of stationary time series that share some common features. Due to the similarities among the SDFs, the log‐SDF can be represented using a common set of basis functions. The basis shared by the collection of the log‐SDFs is estimated as a low‐dimensional manifold of a large space spanned by a prespecified rich basis. A collective estimation approach pools information and borrows strength across the SDFs to achieve better estimation efficiency. Moreover, each estimated spectral density has a concise representation using the …

Semicontinuity Of Betweenness Functions, Paul Bankston, Aisling Mccluskey, Richard J. Smith
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
A ternary relational structure〈X,[⋅,⋅,⋅]〉, interpreting a notion of betweenness, gives rise to the family of intervals, with interval [a,b] being defined as the set of elements of X between a and b. Under very reasonable circumstances, X is also equipped with some topological structure, in such a way that each interval is a closed nonempty subset of X. The question then arises as to the continuity behavior—within the hyperspace context—of the betweenness function {x,y}↦[x,y]. We investigate two broad scenarios: the first involves metric spaces and Menger's betweenness interpretation; the second deals with continua and the subcontinuum interpretation.

We consider a multiple hypotheses problem with directional alternatives in a decision theoretic framework. We obtain an empirical Bayes rule subject to a constraint on mixed directional false discovery rate (mdFDR≤α) under the semiparametric setting where the distribution of the test statistic is parametric, but the prior distribution is nonparametric. We proposed separate priors for the left tail and right tail alternatives as it may be required for many applications. The proposed Bayes rule is compared through simulation against rules proposed by Benjamini and Yekutieli and Efron. We illustrate the proposed methodology for two sets of …

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) inhibit expression of target genes by binding to their RNA transcripts. It has been recently shown that RNA transcripts targeted by the same miRNA could “compete” for the miRNA molecules and thereby indirectly regulate each other. Experimental evidence has suggested that the aberration of such miRNA-mediated interaction between RNAs—called competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) interaction—can play important roles in tumorigenesis. Given the difficulty of deciphering context-specific miRNA binding, and the existence of various gene regulatory factors such as DNA methylation and copy number alteration, inferring context-specific ceRNA interactions accurately is a computationally challenging task. Here we propose a computational …
