Journal of China & Foreign Highway
Steel arch frame replaced such construction methods as floor bracket or segment cantilever assembly and it was applied to arch circle cast-in-place across deep water canyons in mountainous areas, which had certain advantages and was worth promoting and applying.By introducing the key construction technologies of Sanchahe Bridge, including steel arch frame cantilever fastener method assembly, arch water tank method precompression, and main arch ring layered pouring, the common problems in the construction process of crossing the deep water canyon were solved effectively.Based on Midas Civil overall modeling of finite elements, the key construction technologies adopted by the bridge were numerically simulated and analyzed, and the successful construction …

Guardrail Improvement For Old Bridges In Expressways, Liu Xinping, Zhang Shihui, Shang Zhongping, Han Yue, Zhang Qiang
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
In view of the insufficient protection grade of the guardrail in old bridges,a combined guardrail suitable for the low concrete wall guardrail in the old bridge was designed and developed by using finite element analysis while not damaging the main structure of the bridge. The protection grade was verified to reach SA grade through a full-scale vehicle collision test. The guardrail was designed with new high-strength alloy steel, with light weight and beautiful appearance. There was no need to dismantle the original concrete foundation in the old bridge, which is convenient for construction and requires low cost. Therefore,it is worth being popularized and applied in the …

Improvement Of Gravelly Laterite And Cement Stable Disposal In West Africa, Jin Haibing, Yi Zicheng, Zhuo Rong
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
Owing to poor gradation and high liquid limit and plasticity index, the application of gravel laterite on road paving is limited in West Africa. To overcome this issue, laterite granule combined with sand at different content was explored. The performance including the particle composition, limit water content and CBR value was investigated. The results indicate that sand treatment can improve the gradation, enhance the compactness, and reduce the plasticity index. The improved gravel laterite can meet the requirements of subbase, cushion, and base courses.Cement treatment can improve the mechanical properties of laterite grains.Cement and sand content affect the unconfined compressive strength significantly, with an optimal sand content range identified.Specifically, laterite granules mixed with …

A Novel Correction For The Multivariate Ljung-Box Test, Minhao Huang
A Novel Correction For The Multivariate Ljung-Box Test, Minhao Huang
Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
This research introduces an analytical improvement to the Multivariate Ljung-Box test that addresses significant deviations of the original test from the nominal Type I error rates under almost all scenarios. Prior attempts to mitigate this issue have been directed at modification of the test statistics or correction of the test distribution to achieve precise results in finite samples. In previous studies, focused on designing corrections to the univariate Ljung-Box, a method that specifically adjusts the test rejection region has been the most successful of attaining the best Type I error rates. We adopt the same approach for the more complex, …
Understanding Perspectives Of Power In A College Mathematics Classroom, Laura Seeberger
Understanding Perspectives Of Power In A College Mathematics Classroom, Laura Seeberger
Honors College Theses
Power is embedded in teacher and student actions within mathematics classrooms, whether that power is known or not. Incorporating equity and inclusiveness requires a deeper understanding of this power behind actions. In this study, we developed and administered a three part survey questioning college faculty and college students how they perceive power related to common actions within a college mathematics classroom. For example, participants were asked whether a college math teacher assigning homework increased, decreased, or did both to the teacher’s power; then whether this action increased, decreased, or did both to a student’s power. Analysis of 16 faculty and …
An Improved Bayesian Pick-The-Winner (Ibpw) Design For Randomized Phase Ii Clinical Trials, Wanni Lei, Maosen Peng, Xi K. Zhou
An Improved Bayesian Pick-The-Winner (Ibpw) Design For Randomized Phase Ii Clinical Trials, Wanni Lei, Maosen Peng, Xi K. Zhou
COBRA Preprint Series
Phase II clinical trials play a pivotal role in drug development by screening a large number of drug candidates to identify those with promising preliminary efficacy for phase III testing. Trial designs that enable efficient decision-making with small sample sizes and early futility stopping while controlling for type I and II errors in hypothesis testing, such as Simon’s two-stage design, are preferred. Randomized multi-arm trials are increasingly used in phase II settings to overcome the limitations associated with using historical controls as the reference. However, how to effectively balance efficiency and accurate decision-making continues to be an important research topic. …

Selected Topics On Sequential Designs For Decision Making, Caroline Kerfonta
All Dissertations
This dissertation is comprised of three parts. The first proposes a sequential approach to determine the experimental setting with the minimum variance (Kerfonta et al., 2024). Two acquisition functions are developed to assist developing the approach. Theoretical results along with a case study using data from crystallization experiments is conducted to show the ability of the proposed method to correctly select the experiment with the minimum variance. The second and third parts propose adaptations to the Bayesian optimization algorithm using transformed additive Gaussian processes (TAG) as the surrogate model. The goal of using the TAG framework is to decompose the …

Representation Learning For Generative Models With Applications To Healthcare, Astronautics, And Aviation, Van Minh Nguyen
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores applications of representation learning and generative models to challenges in healthcare, astronautics, and aviation.
The first part investigates the use of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to synthesize realistic electronic health record (EHR) data. An initial attempt at training a GAN on the MIMIC-IV dataset encountered stability and convergence issues, motivating a deeper study of 1-Lipschitz regularization techniques for Auxiliary Classifier GANs (AC-GANs). An extensive ablation study on the CIFAR-10 dataset found that Spectral Normalization is key for AC-GAN stability and performance, while Weight Clipping fails to converge without Spectral Normalization. Analysis of the training dynamics provided further …

Optimizing Nba Roster Construction, Nick R. Riccardi
Sport Management - All Scholarship
This study aims to quantify the effect that complementary player types have on team success in the National Basketball Association. Using cluster analysis, player-seasons are redefined from their traditional basketball positions to better encompass the roles that players play. For the 10 seasons of data, the best player for each of the 30 teams in the league is determined and teams are grouped based on the cluster of their best player. Ordinary Least Squares regressions are performed to test what player types fit together best. The results of this study show the importance of complementary workers to a firm’s success.

Journal of China & Foreign Highway
Based on the overpass project over Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway on Changsha Pan-Pan Road, this paper proposed a construction method of large-slope walking-type incremental launching and high falling beam of steel box girder given the difficulties in busy traffic under the bridge, large pushing slope, and great total height of falling beam. After the steel box girder assembly was completed, some bridge deck ancillary facilities were constructed in advance in the preassembly yard and the weight was allocated. The steel box girder was pushed synchronously, thereby reducing the aerial work on the bridge in the later stage.During the incremental launching construction of the steel box girder above the …

Journal of China & Foreign Highway
During the preparation of the recycled asphalt mixture, part of the aged asphalt is first transferred from the surface of the recycled material to the new aggregate and then diffused and fused with the new asphalt,in which the percentage of transferred aged asphalt plays a key role in the final regeneration effect. In order to study the degree of transfer of aged asphalt in reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP ),the mobilization rate (RMR) was calculated and analyzed based on the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR ).The AC-13 graded recycled asphalt mixture was mixed and sieved to separate the new aggregate and RAP.The recycled …
