Design And Experimental Study On Special Spherical Support Of Pingtang Bridge, Tang Zhi, Ma Baihu, Du Bin, Xu Xiangdong, Xia Junyong Mar 2023

Design And Experimental Study On Special Spherical Support Of Pingtang Bridge, Tang Zhi, Ma Baihu, Du Bin, Xu Xiangdong, Xia Junyong

Journal of China & Foreign Highway

The vertical bearing capacity of the 16# pier of Pingtang Bridge is 10 000 kN, and the horizontal bearing capacity along the bridge is 12 000 kN, which is 120% of the vertical bearing capacity. The support angle needs to reach the technical parameter requirements of 0.05 rad, which far exceeds the requirements of 10–40% horizontal force of conventional highway supports. According to the specific engineering situation, a new type of support with a large horizontal bearing capacity was designed. Firstly, the finite element model of the support was established to analyze the mechanical properties of the support, and the …

Study On Practical Method Of Safety Assessment For Bridges Under Heavy‐Cargo Transportation, Jiang Xu, Wang Wanfeng, He Zhensheng, Gao Xuefeng

Journal of China & Foreign Highway

In order to meet the requirements of the industry for the high efficiency, safety, and reliability of the traffic safety assessment of heavy-duty vehicles, this paper proposed a method that combined a real-time monitoring system with a finite element method for the traffic safety assessment of heavy-duty vehicles on bridges and verified the method through practical projects. The paper evaluated the bridge’s technical condition level before the heavy-duty vehicle passes and determined the resistance reduction factor considering the bridge’s technical condition level. The finite element analysis model of the bridge was established, and the reliability of the model was verified …

Study On Pavement Performance Of Waterborne Epoxy Emulsified Asphalt And Its Application In Micro‐Surface, Jiang Hai, Liu Dachang Mar 2023

Study On Pavement Performance Of Waterborne Epoxy Emulsified Asphalt And Its Application In Micro‐Surface, Jiang Hai, Liu Dachang

Journal of China & Foreign Highway

In order to improve the pavement performance at micro-surface, waterborne epoxy resin was used to modify the emulsified asphalt, and the compatibility, microstructure, mechanical properties, rheological properties, and pavement performance of mixtures of the modified emulsified asphalt were studied. The storage stability test shows that the epoxy emulsion has good compatibility with emulsified asphalt. With the increase in waterborne epoxy resin content, the modified emulsified asphalt tends to form an epoxy resin-dominated skeleton structure. At the same time, with the increase in waterborne epoxy resin content, the adhesion and mechanical properties of emulsified asphalt and aggregate are significantly improved. At …

Assessment And Correction Of Lidar-Derived Dems In The Coastal Marshes Of Louisiana, William M. Lauve Mar 2019

Assessment And Correction Of Lidar-Derived Dems In The Coastal Marshes Of Louisiana, William M. Lauve

LSU Master's Theses

The onset of airborne light detection and ranging (lidar) has resulted in expansive, precise digital elevation models (DEMs). DEMs are essential for modeling complex systems, such as the coastal land margin of Louisiana. They are used for many applications (e.g. tide, storm surge, and ecological modeling) and by diverse groups (e.g. state and federal agencies, NGOs, and academia). However, in a marsh environment, it is difficult for airborne lidar to produce accurate bare-earth measurements and even accurate elevations are rarely verified by ground truth data. The accuracy of lidar in marshes is limited by the sensor’s resolution …

Season-Ahead Forecasting Of Water Storage And Irrigation Requirements – An Application To The Southwest Monsoon In India, Arun Ravindranath, Naresh Devineni, Upmanu Lall, Paulina Concha Larrauri Oct 2018

Season-Ahead Forecasting Of Water Storage And Irrigation Requirements – An Application To The Southwest Monsoon In India, Arun Ravindranath, Naresh Devineni, Upmanu Lall, Paulina Concha Larrauri

Publications and Research

Water risk management is a ubiquitous challenge faced by stakeholders in the water or agricultural sector. We present a methodological framework for forecasting water storage requirements and present an application of this methodology to risk assessment in India. The application focused on forecasting crop water stress for potatoes grown during the monsoon season in the Satara district of Maharashtra. Pre-season large-scale climate predictors used to forecast water stress were selected based on an exhaustive search method that evaluates for highest ranked probability skill score and lowest root-mean-squared error in a leave-one-out cross-validation mode. Adaptive forecasts were made in the years …

A Model To Predict Concentrations And Uncertainty For Mercury Species In Lakes, Ashley Hendricks Jan 2018

A Model To Predict Concentrations And Uncertainty For Mercury Species In Lakes, Ashley Hendricks

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

To increase understanding of mercury cycling, a seasonal mass balance model was developed to predict mercury concentrations in lakes and fish. Results indicate that seasonality in mercury cycling is significant and is important for a northern latitude lake. Models, when validated, have the potential to be used as an alternative to measurements; models are relatively inexpensive and are not as time intensive. Previously published mercury models have neglected to perform a thorough validation. Model validation allows for regulators to be able to make more informed, confident decisions when using models in water quality management. It is critical to quantify uncertainty; …

Particle Filters For State Estimation Of Confined Aquifers, Graeme Field Jan 2018

Particle Filters For State Estimation Of Confined Aquifers, Graeme Field

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mathematical models are used in engineering and the sciences to estimate properties of systems of interest, increasing our understanding of the surrounding world and driving technological innovation. Unfortunately, as the systems of interest grow in complexity, so to do the models necessary to accurately describe them. Analytic solutions for problems with such models are provably intractable, motivating the use of approximate yet still accurate estimation techniques. Particle filtering methods have emerged as a popular tool in the presence of such models, spreading from its origins in signal processing to a diverse set of fields throughout engineering and the sciences including …

The Simulation & Evaluation Of Surge Hazard Using A Response Surface Method In The New York Bight, Michael H. Bredesen Jan 2015

The Simulation & Evaluation Of Surge Hazard Using A Response Surface Method In The New York Bight, Michael H. Bredesen

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Atmospheric features, such as tropical cyclones, act as a driving mechanism for many of the major hazards affecting coastal areas around the world. Accurate and efficient quantification of tropical cyclone surge hazard is essential to the development of resilient coastal communities, particularly given continued sea level trend concerns. Recent major tropical cyclones that have impacted the northeastern portion of the United States have resulted in devastating flooding in New York City, the most densely populated city in the US. As a part of national effort to re-evaluate coastal inundation hazards, the Federal Emergency Management Agency used the Joint Probability Method …

Stochastic Hybrid Embodied Co2-Eq Analysis: An Application To The Irish Apartment Building Sector, Adolf Acquaye, Aidan Duffy, Biswajit Basu Apr 2011

Stochastic Hybrid Embodied Co2-Eq Analysis: An Application To The Irish Apartment Building Sector, Adolf Acquaye, Aidan Duffy, Biswajit Basu

Articles

Although embodiedCO2-eq analysis has seen recent developments as evident in the establishment of the ISO14040 and 14044 LCA standards, it is recognized that due to weaknesses in gathering data on product-related emissions,embodiedCO2-eq values are probabilistic. This paper presents a stochastic analysis of hybrid embodied CO2-eq in buildings to account for this weakness in traditional methods and, by way of example, applies it to an Irish construction-sector case study. Using seven apartment buildings, 70,000 results are simulated with Monte Carlo analysis and used to derive probabilistic and cumulative embodied CO2-eq intensity distributions for apartment buildings in Ireland. A Wakeby distribution with …
