On Characterizations And Infinite Divisibility Of Recently Introduced Distributions, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

We present here characterizations of the most recently introduced continuous univariate distributions based on: (i) a simple relationship between two truncated moments; (ii) truncated moments of certain functions of the 1th order statistic; (iii) truncated moments of certain functions of the nth order statistic; (iv) truncated moment of certain function of the random variable. We like to mention that the characterization (i) which is expressed in terms of the ratio of truncated moments is stable in the sense of weak convergence. We will also point out that some …

New Classes Of Univariate Continuous Exponential Power Series Distributions, M. Ahsanullah, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani, M. Shakil, B.M. Golam Kibria, F. George

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Recently, many researchers have developed various classes of continuous probability distributions which can be generated via the generalized Pearson differential equation and other techniques. In this paper, motivated by the importance of the power series in probability theory and its applications, we derive some new classes of univariate exponential power series distributions for a realvalued continuous random variable, which we call exponential power series distributions. Various mathematical properties of the proposed classes of distributions are discussed. Based on these distributional properties, we have established some characterizations of these distributions as well. It is hoped that the findings of the paper …

A Dual-Porosity-Stokes Model And Finite Element Method For Coupling Dual-Porosity Flow And Free Flow, Jiangyong Hou, Meilan Qiu, Xiaoming He, Chaohua Guo, Mingzhen Wei, Baojun Bai

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we propose and numerically solve a new model considering confined flow in dual-porosity media coupled with free flow in embedded macrofractures and conduits. Such situation arises, for example, for fluid flows in hydraulic fractured tight/shale oil/gas reservoirs. The flow in dual-porosity media, which consists of both matrix and microfractures, is described by a dual-porosity model. And the flow in the macrofractures and conduits is governed by the Stokes equation. Then the two models are coupled through four physically valid interface conditions on the interface between dual-porosity media and macrofractures/conduits, which play a key role in a physically …

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) is a legume crop that is resilient to hot and drought-prone climates, and a primary source of protein in sub-Saharan Africa and other parts of the developing world. However, genome resources for cowpea have lagged behind most other major crops. Here we describe foundational genome resources and their application to the analysis of germplasm currently in use in West African breeding programs. Resources developed from the African cultivar IT97K-499-35 include a whole-genome shotgun (WGS) assembly, a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) physical map, and assembled sequences from 4355 BACs. These resources and WGS sequences of …

Identification Of Control Targets In Boolean Molecular Network Models Via Computational Algebra, David Murrugarra, Alan Veliz-Cuba, Boris Aguilar, Reinhard Laubenbacher

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Many problems in biomedicine and other areas of the life sciences can be characterized as control problems, with the goal of finding strategies to change a disease or otherwise undesirable state of a biological system into another, more desirable, state through an intervention, such as a drug or other therapeutic treatment. The identification of such strategies is typically based on a mathematical model of the process to be altered through targeted control inputs. This paper focuses on processes at the molecular level that determine the state of an individual cell, involving signaling or gene regulation. The mathematical model type considered …

Another Generalized Transmuted Family Of Distributions: Properties And Applications, Faton Merovci, Morad Alizadeh, Gholamhossein Hamedani

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

We introduce and study general mathematical properties of a new generator of continuous distributions with two extra parameters called the Another generalized transmuted family of distributions. We present some special models. We investigate the asymptotes and shapes. The new density function can be expressed as a linear combination of exponentiated densities based on the same baseline distribution. We obtain explicit expressions for the ordinary and incomplete moments and generating functions, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves, asymptotic distribution of the extreme values, Shannon and Renyi entropies and order statistics, which hold for any baseline model, certain characterisations are presented. Further, we …

Ultracoproduct Continua And Their Regular Subcontinua, Paul Bankston Sep 2016

Ultracoproduct Continua And Their Regular Subcontinua, Paul Bankston

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

We continue our study of ultracoproduct continua, focusing on the role played by the regular subcontinua—those subcontinua which are themselves ultracoproducts. Regular subcontinua help us in the analysis of intervals, composants, and noncut points of ultracoproduct continua. Also, by identifying two points when they are contained in the same regular subcontinua, we naturally generalize the partition of a standard subcontinuum of ℍ * into its layers.

Bayesian Peer Calibration With Application To Alcohol Use, Miles Q. Ott, Joseph W. Hogan, Krista J. Gile, Crystal Linkletter, Nancy P. Barnett Aug 2016

Bayesian Peer Calibration With Application To Alcohol Use, Miles Q. Ott, Joseph W. Hogan, Krista J. Gile, Crystal Linkletter, Nancy P. Barnett

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

Peers are often able to provide important additional information to supplement self-reported behavioral measures. The study motivating this work collected data on alcohol in a social network formed by college students living in a freshman dormitory. By using two imperfect sources of information (self-reported and peer-reported alcohol consumption), rather than solely self-reports or peer-reports, we are able to gain insight into alcohol consumption on both the population and the individual level, as well as information on the discrepancy of individual peer-reports. We develop a novel Bayesian comparative calibration model for continuous, count and binary outcomes that uses covariate information to …

Oscillation Criteria For Third-Order Functional Differential Equations With Damping, Martin Bohner, Said R. Grace, Irena Jadlovska

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper is a continuation of the recent study by Bohner et al [9] on oscillation properties of nonlinear third order functional differential equation under the assumption that the second order differential equation is nonoscillatory. We consider both the delayed and advanced case of the studied equation. The presented results correct and extend earlier ones. Several illustrative examples are included.

Maximum Empirical Likelihood Estimation In U-Statistics Based General Estimating Equations, Lingnan Li Aug 2016

Maximum Empirical Likelihood Estimation In U-Statistics Based General Estimating Equations, Lingnan Li

Open Access Dissertations

In the first part of this thesis, we study maximum empirical likelihood estimates (MELE's) in U-statistics based general estimating equations (UGEE's). Our technical maneuver is the jackknife empirical likelihood (JEL) approach. We give the local uniform asymptotic normality condition for the log-JEL for UGEE's. We derive the estimating equations for finding MELE's and provide their asymptotic normality. We obtain easy MELE's which have less computational burden than the usual MELE's and can be easily implemented using existing software. We investigate the use of side information of the data to improve efficiency. We exhibit that the MELE's are fully efficient, and …

Extreme-Strike And Small-Time Asymptotics For Gaussian Stochastic Volatility Models, Xin Zhang Aug 2016

Extreme-Strike And Small-Time Asymptotics For Gaussian Stochastic Volatility Models, Xin Zhang

Open Access Dissertations

Asymptotic behavior of implied volatility is of our interest in this dissertation. For extreme strike, we consider a stochastic volatility asset price model in which the volatility is the absolute value of a continuous Gaussian process with arbitrary prescribed mean and covariance. By exhibiting a Karhunen-Loève expansion for the integrated variance, and using sharp estimates of the density of a general second-chaos variable, we derive asymptotics for the asset price density for large or small values of the variable, and study the wing behavior of the implied volatility in these models. Our main result provides explicit expressions for the first …

Biomarkers For Radiation Pneumonitis Using Noninvasive Molecular Imaging, Meetha Medhora, Steven Haworth, Yu Liu, Jayashree Narayanan, Feng Gao, Ming Zhao, Said H. Audi, Elizabeth R. Jacobs, Brian L. Fish, Anne V. Clough

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Our goal is to develop minimally invasive biomarkers for predicting radiation-induced lung injury before symptoms develop. Currently, there are no biomarkers that can predict radiation pneumonitis. Radiation damage to the whole lung is a serious risk in nuclear accidents or in radiologic terrorism. Our previous studies have shown that a single dose of 15 Gy of x-rays to the thorax causes severe pneumonitis in rats by 6–8 wk. We have also developed a mitigator for radiation pneumonitis and fibrosis that can be started as late as 5 wk after radiation. Methods: We used 2 functional SPECT probes in vivo in …

Characterizations Of Pareto, Weibull And Power Function Distributions Based On Generalized Order Statistics, M. Ahsanullah, Gholamhossein Hamedani

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Characterizations of probability distributions by different regression conditions on generalized order statistics has attracted the attention of many researchers. We present here, characterization of Pareto and Weibull distributions based on the conditional expectation of generalized order statistics extending the characterization results reported by Jin and Lee (2014). We also present a characterization of the power function distribution based on the conditional expectation of lower generalized order statistics.

Multilevel Models For Longitudinal Data, Aastha Khatiwada Aug 2016

Multilevel Models For Longitudinal Data, Aastha Khatiwada

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Longitudinal data arise when individuals are measured several times during an ob- servation period and thus the data for each individual are not independent. There are several ways of analyzing longitudinal data when different treatments are com- pared. Multilevel models are used to analyze data that are clustered in some way. In this work, multilevel models are used to analyze longitudinal data from a case study. Results from other more commonly used methods are compared to multilevel models. Also, comparison in output between two software, SAS and R, is done. Finally a method consisting of fitting individual models for each …

Newsvendor Models With Monte Carlo Sampling, Ijeoma W. Ekwegh Aug 2016

Newsvendor Models With Monte Carlo Sampling, Ijeoma W. Ekwegh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Newsvendor Models with Monte Carlo Sampling by Ijeoma Winifred Ekwegh The newsvendor model is used in solving inventory problems in which demand is random. In this thesis, we will focus on a method of using Monte Carlo sampling to estimate the order quantity that will either maximizes revenue or minimizes cost given that demand is uncertain. Given data, the Monte Carlo approach will be used in sampling data over scenarios and also estimating the probability density function. A bootstrapping process yields an empirical distribution for the order quantity that will maximize the expected profit. Finally, this method will be used …

How The Magnitude Of Prey Genetic Variation Alters Predator-Prey Eco-Evolutionary Dynamics, Michael H. Cortez Jul 2016

How The Magnitude Of Prey Genetic Variation Alters Predator-Prey Eco-Evolutionary Dynamics, Michael H. Cortez

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Evolution can alter the stability and dynamics of ecological communities; for example, prey evolution can drive cyclic dynamics in predator-prey systems that are not possible in the absence of evolution. However, it is unclear how the magnitude of additive genetic variation in the evolving species mediates those effects. In this study, I explore how the magnitude of prey additive genetic variation determines what effects prey evolution has on the dynamics and stability of predator-prey systems. I use linear stability analysis to decompose the stability of a general eco-evolutionary predator-prey model into components representing the stabilities of the ecological and evolutionary …

Complex-Valued Time-Series Correlation Increases Sensitivity In Fmri Analysis, Mary C. Kociuba, Daniel B. Rowe Jul 2016

Complex-Valued Time-Series Correlation Increases Sensitivity In Fmri Analysis, Mary C. Kociuba, Daniel B. Rowe

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose

To develop a linear matrix representation of correlation between complex-valued (CV) time-series in the temporal Fourier frequency domain, and demonstrate its increased sensitivity over correlation between magnitude-only (MO) time-series in functional MRI (fMRI) analysis.

Materials and Methods

The standard in fMRI is to discard the phase before the statistical analysis of the data, despite evidence of task related change in the phase time-series. With a real-valued isomorphism representation of Fourier reconstruction, correlation is computed in the temporal frequency domain with CV time-series data, rather than with the standard of MO data. A MATLAB simulation compares the Fisher-z transform …

Upper And Lower Solution Method For Boundary Value Problems At Resonance, Samerah Al Mosa, Paul W. Eloe Jun 2016

Upper And Lower Solution Method For Boundary Value Problems At Resonance, Samerah Al Mosa, Paul W. Eloe

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We consider two simple boundary value problems at resonance for an ordinary differential equation. Employing a shift argument, a regular fixed point operator is constructed. We employ the monotone method coupled with a method of upper and lower solutions and obtain sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions of boundary value problems at resonance for nonlinear boundary value problems. Three applications are presented in which explicit upper solutions and lower solutions are exhibited for the first boundary value problem. Two applications are presented for the second boundary value problem. Of interest, the upper and lower solutions are easily and explicitly …

Stochastic Processes And Their Applications To Change Point Detection Problems, Heng Yang Jun 2016

Stochastic Processes And Their Applications To Change Point Detection Problems, Heng Yang

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation addresses the change point detection problem when either the post-change distribution has uncertainty or the post-change distribution is time inhomogeneous. In the case of post-change distribution uncertainty, attention is drawn to the construction of a family of composite stopping times. It is shown that the proposed composite stopping time has third order optimality in the detection problem with Wiener observations and also provides information to distinguish the different values of post-change drift. In the case of post-change distribution uncertainty, a computationally efficient decision rule with low-complexity based on Cumulative Sum (CUSUM) algorithm is also introduced. In the time …

Testing Multiple Hypotheses With Skewed Alternatives, Naveen K. Bansal, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani, Mehdi Maadooliat

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

In many practical cases of multiple hypothesis problems, it can be expected that the alternatives are not symmetrically distributed. If it is known a priori that the distributions of the alternatives are skewed, we show that this information yields high power procedures as compared to the procedures based on symmetric alternatives when testing multiple hypotheses. We propose a Bayesian decision theoretic rule for multiple directional hypothesis testing, when the alternatives are distributed as skewed, under a constraint on a mixed directional false discovery rate. We compare the proposed rule with a frequentist's rule of Benjamini and Yekutieli (2005) using simulations. …

Kings And Heirs: A Characterization Of The (2,2)-Domination Graphs Of Tournaments, Kim A. S. Factor, Larry J. Langley May 2016

Kings And Heirs: A Characterization Of The (2,2)-Domination Graphs Of Tournaments, Kim A. S. Factor, Larry J. Langley

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

In 1980, Maurer coined the phrase king when describing any vertex of a tournament that could reach every other vertex in two or fewer steps. A (2,2)-domination graph of a digraph D, dom2,2(D), has vertex set V(D), the vertices of D, and edge uv whenever u and v each reach all other vertices of D in two or fewer steps. In this special case of the (i,j)-domination graph, we see that Maurer’s theorem plays an important role in establishing which vertices form the kings that create some of the edges in dom2,2(D). But of even more …

Population Projection And Habitat Preference Modeling Of The Endangered James Spinymussel (Pleurobema Collina), Marisa Draper May 2016

Population Projection And Habitat Preference Modeling Of The Endangered James Spinymussel (Pleurobema Collina), Marisa Draper

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

The James Spinymussel (Pleurobema collina) is an endangered mussel species at the top of Virginia’s conservation list. The James Spinymussel plays a critical role in the environment by filtering and cleaning stream water while providing shelter and food for macroinvertebrates; however, conservation efforts are complicated by the mussels’ burrowing behavior, camouflage, and complex life cycle. The goals of the research conducted were to estimate detection probabilities that could be used to predict species presence and facilitate field work, and to track individually marked mussels to test for habitat preferences. Using existing literature and mark-recapture field data, these goals were accomplished …
