A Higher-Order Ensemble/Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Method For The Nonstationary Navier-Stokes Equations, Max Gunzburger, Nan Jiang, Michael Schneier

Partial differential equations (PDE) often involve parameters, such as viscosity or density. An analysis of the PDE may involve considering a large range of parameter values, as occurs in uncertainty quantification, control and optimization, inference, and several statistical techniques. The solution for even a single case may be quite expensive; whereas parallel computing may be applied, this reduces the total elapsed time but not the total computational effort. In the case of flows governed by the Navier-Stokes equations, a method has been devised for computing an ensemble of solutions. Recently, a reduced-order model derived from a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) …

Parametrization Of Scale-Invariant Self-Adjoint Extensions Of Scale-Invariant Symmetric Operators, Miron B. Bekker, Martin Bohner, Alexander P. Ugol'nikov, Hristo Voulov
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
On a Hilbert space H, we consider a symmetric scale-invariant operator with equal defect numbers. It is assumed that the operator has at least one scale invariant self-adjoint extension in H. We prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between (generalized) resolvents of scale-invariant extensions and solutions of some functional equation. Two examples of Dirac-type operators are considered.

Simulated and swine industry data sets were utilized to assess the impact of removing older data on the predictive ability of selection candidate estimated breeding values (EBV) when using single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction (ssGBLUP). Simulated data included thirty replicates designed to mimic the structure of swine data sets. For the simulated data, varying amounts of data were truncated based on the number of ancestral generations back from the selection candidates. The swine data sets consisted of phenotypic and genotypic records for three traits across two breeds on animals born from 2003 to 2017. Phenotypes and genotypes were iteratively …

Decoupled, Linear, And Energy Stable Finite Element Method For The Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes-Darcy Phase Field Model, Yali Gao, Xiaoming He, Liquan Mei, Xiaofeng Yang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we consider the numerical approximation for a phase field model of the coupled two-phase free flow and two-phase porous media flow. This model consists of Cahn—Hilliard—Navier—Stokes equations in the free flow region and Cahn—Hilliard—Darcy equations in the porous media region that are coupled by seven interface conditions. The coupled system is decoupled based on the interface conditions and the solution values on the interface from the previous time step. A fully discretized scheme with finite elements for the spatial discretization is developed to solve the decoupled system. In order to deal with the difficulties arising from the …

The Impact Of Data Sovereignty On American Indian Self-Determination: A Framework Proof Of Concept Using Data Science, Joseph Carver Robertson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Data Sovereignty Initiative is a collection of ideas that was designed to create SMART solutions for tribal communities. This concept was to develop a horizontal governance framework to create a strategic act of sovereignty using data science. The core concept of this idea was to present data sovereignty as a way for tribal communities to take ownership of data in order to affect policy and strategic decisions that are data driven in nature. The case studies in this manuscript were developed around statistical theories of spatial statistics, exploratory data analysis, and machine learning. And although these case studies are …

Students’ Interpretations Of Categorical Data Using Dynamic Graphical Representations, Adam Eide
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Statistical association is an important concept in statistics. An exploratory study examined how students reason about statistical association utilizing graphical representations constructed with CODAP, a dynamic statistical graphing software. Task-based interviews were conducted with three 6th grade students prior to formal instruction. Students’ conceptions of a statistical relationship, proportional reasoning skill level, ability to interpret bivariate categorical graphs (particularly segmented bar graphs and two-way binned plots), and ability to identify association of two categorical variables were all investigated through interview tasks and responses to inquiry. Students were found to have developing proportional reasoning skills and struggled to correctly define and …

We introduce a new family of continuous distributions and study the mathematical properties of the new family. Some useful characterizations based on the ratio of two truncated moments and hazard function are also presented. We estimate the model parameters by the maximum likelihood method and assess its performance based on biases and mean squared errors in a simulation study framework.

Next-Generation Sequencing technologies allow for a substantial increase in the amount of data available for various biological studies. In order to effectively and efficiently analyze this data, computational approaches combining mathematics, statistics, computer science, and biology are implemented. Even with the substantial efforts devoted to development of these approaches, numerous issues and pitfalls remain. One of these issues is mapping uncertainty, in which read alignment results are biased due to the inherent difficulties associated with accurately aligning RNA-Sequencing reads. GeneQC is an alignment quality control tool that provides insight into the severity of mapping uncertainty in each annotated gene from …

Integrated Statistical And Machine Learning Algorithms For Predicting And Classifying G Protein-Coupled Receptors, Fredrick Ayivor
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are transmembrane proteins with important functions in signal transduction and often serve as drug targets. With increasing availability of protein sequence information, there is much interest in computationally predicting GPCRs and classifying them according to their biological roles. Such predictions are cost-efficient and can be valuable guides for designing wet lab experiments to help elucidate signaling pathways and expedite drug discovery. There are existing computational tools of GPCR prediction that involve principal component analysis (PCA), intimate sorting (IS), support vector machine, and random forest (RF) techniques using various sequence derived features. While accuracies of over 90\% …

Statistics And Biomechanics: An Interdisciplinary Evaluation Of The Mathematical, Practical, And Athletic Applications Of Principal Component Analysis, Sydney Grace Davis
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Excerpt from Introduction
Coaches and athletes around the world are in constant pursuit of improving their athletic performance. For some, a routine amount of weight lifting, cardiovascular exercise, agilities and flexibility training with gradual advancement may be enough to see growth. However, many are not satisfied and turn to in-depth analyses of their techniques in order to measure their progress. After an intense workout or competition, coaches spend time breaking down athletic performances based on major movements. By compartmentalizing these activities, they can identify which motions are efficient and which ones hinder fluid motion. From this evaluation and discernment, athletes …

The concept of a cluster or community in a network context has been of considerable interest in a variety of settings in recent years. In this paper, employing random walks and geodesic distance, we introduce a unified measure of cluster-based proximity between nodes, relative to a given subset of interest. The inherent simplicity and informativeness of the approach could make it of value to researchers in a variety of scientific fields. Applicability is demonstrated via application to clustering for a number of existent data sets (including multipartite networks). We view community detection (i.e. when the full set of network nodes …

We study a linear doubly indexed sequence that contains the Catalan numbers and relates to a class of generalized Motzkin numbers. We obtain a closed form formula, a generating function and a nonlinear recursion relation for this sequence. We show that a finite difference scheme with compact stencil applied to a nonlinear differential operator acting on the Euclidean distance function is exact, and exploit this exactness to produce the nonlinear recursion relation. In particular, the nonlinear recurrence relation is obtained by using standard error analysis techniques from numerical analysis. This work shows a connection between numerical analysis and number theory, …

Engaging Students In The Practice Of Statistics Through Undergraduate Research, Debra L. Hydorn
Mathematics Articles
As statisticians, we engage in a variety of activities, some of which are regularly integrated into our undergraduate courses. However, the individual courses that comprise a mathematics or statistics degree program might not provide students with experiences in the broader range of activities that define the practice of statistics. To remedy this situation, faculty can consider developing and mentoring undergraduate research projects. This article briefly discusses the skills that comprise statistical practice along with some course and program options for helping students to develop these skills. Then, types of undergraduate research projects in statistics are described to help faculty generate …

Old English Character Recognition Using Neural Networks, Sattajit Sutradhar
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Character recognition has been capturing the interest of researchers since the beginning of the twentieth century. While the Optical Character Recognition for printed material is very robust and widespread nowadays, the recognition of handwritten materials lags behind. In our digital era more and more historical, handwritten documents are digitized and made available to the general public. However, these digital copies of handwritten materials lack the automatic content recognition feature of their printed materials counterparts. We are proposing a practical, accurate, and computationally efficient method for Old English character recognition from manuscript images. Our method relies on a modern machine learning …
A Probability Model For Strategic Bidding On The Price Is Right, Paul H. Kvam
A Probability Model For Strategic Bidding On The Price Is Right, Paul H. Kvam
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
The TV game show “The Price is Right” features a bidding auction called “Contestants’ Row” that rewards the player (out of 4) who bids closest to an item’s value, without overbidding. This paper considers ways in which players can maximize a winning probability based on the player's bidding order. We consider marginal strategies in which players assume opponents are bidding individually perceived values of the merchandise. Based on preceding bids of others, players have information available to create strategies. We consider conditional strategies in which players adjust bids knowing other players are using strategies. The last bidder has a large …

Let Sn and Gn denote the respective sets of ordinary and bigrassmannian (BG) permutations of order n, and let (Gn,≤) denote the Bruhat ordering permutation poset. We study the restricted poset (Bn,≤), first providing a simple criterion for comparability. This criterion is used to show that that the poset is connected, to enumerate the saturated chains between elements, and to enumerate the number of maximal elements below r fixed elements. It also quickly produces formulas for β(ω) (α(ω), respectively), the number of BG permutations weakly below (weakly above, respectively) a fixed ω ∈ B …
An Efficient Method For Online Identification Of Steady State For Multivariate System, Honglun None Xu
An Efficient Method For Online Identification Of Steady State For Multivariate System, Honglun None Xu
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Most of the existing steady state detection approaches are designed for univariate signals. For multivariate signals, the univariate approach is often applied to each process variable and the system is claimed to be steady once all signals are steady, which is computationally inefficient and also not accurate. The article proposes an efficient online method for multivariate steady state detection. It estimates the covariance matrices using two different approaches, namely, the mean-squared-deviation and mean-squared-successive-difference. To avoid the usage of a moving window, the process means and the two covariance matrices are calculated recursively through exponentially weighted moving average. A likelihood ratio …

Finite mixture models have provided a reasonable tool to model various types of observed phenomena, specially those which are random in nature. In this article, a finite mixture of Weibull and Pareto (IV) distribution is considered and studied. Some structural properties of the resulting model are discussed including estimation of the model parameters via expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. A real-life data application exhibits the fact that in certain situations, this mixture model might be a better alternative than the rival popular models.

Voxel functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) time courses are complex-valued signals giving rise to magnitude and phase data. Nevertheless, most studies use only the magnitude signals and thus discard half of the data that could potentially contain important information. Methods that make use of complex-valued fMRI (CV-fMRI) data have been shown to lead to superior power in detecting active voxels when compared to magnitude-only methods, particularly for small signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). We present a new Bayesian variable selection approach for detecting brain activation at the voxel level from CV-fMRI data. We develop models with complex-valued spike-and-slab priors on the activation …

In this work, we study the kumaraswamy weibull geometric (Kw-WG) distribution which includes as special cases, several models such as the kumaraswamy weibull distribution, kumaraswamy exponential distribution, weibull geometric distribution, exponential geometric distribution, to name a few. This distribution was monotone and non-monotone hazard rate functions, which are useful in lifetime data analysis and reliability. We derive some basic properties of the Kw-WG distribution including non-central rth-moments, skewness, kurtosis, generating functions, mean deviations, mean residual life, entropy, order statistics and certain characterizations of our distribution. The method of maximum likelihood is used for estimating the model parameters and a simulation …

On Modeling Quantities For Insurer Solvency Against Catastrophe Under Some Markovian Assumptions, Daniel Jefferson Geiger
Doctoral Dissertations
"Insurance companies sometimes face catastrophic losses, yet they must remain solvent enough to meet the legal obligation of covering all claims. Catastrophes can result in large damages to the policyholders, causing the arrival of numerous claims to insurance companies at once. Furthermore, the severity of an event could impact the time until the next occurrence. An insurer needs certain levels of startup capital to meet all claims, and then must have adequate reserves on a continual basis, even more so when catastrophes occur. This work examines two facets of these matters: for an infinite time horizon, we extend and develop …

Statistical applications in sports have long centered on how to best separate signal (e.g., team talent) from random noise. However, most of this work has concentrated on a single sport, and the development of meaningful cross-sport comparisons has been impeded by the difficulty of translating luck from one sport to another. In this manuscript we develop Bayesian state-space models using betting market data that can be uniformly applied across sporting organizations to better understand the role of randomness in game outcomes. These models can be used to extract estimates of team strength, the between-season, within-season and game-to-game variability of team …

Complex-Valued Time Series Modeling For Improved Activation Detection In Fmri Studies, Daniel W. Adrian, Ranjan Maitra, Daniel B. Rowe

A complex-valued data-based model with th order autoregressive errors and general real/imaginary error covariance structure is proposed as an alternative to the commonly used magnitude-only data-based autoregressive model for fMRI time series. Likelihood-ratio-test-based activation statistics are derived for both models and compared for experimental and simulated data. For a dataset from a right-hand finger-tapping experiment, the activation map obtained using complex-valued modeling more clearly identifies the primary activation region (left functional central sulcus) than the magnitude-only model. Such improved accuracy in mapping the left functional central sulcus has important implications in neurosurgical planning for tumor and epilepsy patients. Additionally, we …

In this paper, we propose a flexible extended quadratic hazard rate (EQHR) distribution with increasing, decreasing, bathtub and upside-down bathtub hazard rate function. The EQHR density is arc, right-skewed and symmetrical shaped. This distribution is also obtained from compounding mixture distributions. Stochastic orderings, descriptive measures on the basis of quantiles, order statistics and reliability measures are theoretically established. Characterizations of the EQHR distribution are studied via different techniques. Parameters of the EQHR distribution are estimated using the maximum likelihood method. Goodness of fit of this distribution through different methods is studied.
