Markov Bases For Noncommutative Harmonic Analysis Of Partially Ranked Data, Ann Johnston
Markov Bases For Noncommutative Harmonic Analysis Of Partially Ranked Data, Ann Johnston
HMC Senior Theses
Given the result $v_0$ of a survey and a nested collection of summary statistics that could be used to describe that result, it is natural to ask which of these summary statistics best describe $v_0$. In 1998 Diaconis and Sturmfels presented an approach for determining the conditional significance of a higher order statistic, after sampling a space conditioned on the value of a lower order statistic. Their approach involves the computation of a Markov basis, followed by the use of a Markov process with stationary hypergeometric distribution to generate a sample. This technique for data analysis has become an accepted tool …

Despite the significance and the emphasis placed on mathematics as a subject and field of study, achieving the right attitude to improve students‟ understanding and performance is still a challenge. Previous studies have shown that the problem cuts across nations around the world, both developing countries and developed alike. Teachers and educators of the subject have responsibilities to continuously develop innovative pedagogical approaches that will enhance students‟ interests and performance. Teaching approaches that emphasize real life applications of the subject have become imperative. It is believed that this will stimulate learners‟ interest in the subject as they will be able …
A Stochastic Model For Wind Turbine Power Quality Using A Levy Index Analysis Of Wind Velocity Data, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle, Derek Kearney
A Stochastic Model For Wind Turbine Power Quality Using A Levy Index Analysis Of Wind Velocity Data, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle, Derek Kearney
Conference papers
The power quality of a wind turbine is determined by many factors but time-dependent variation in the wind velocity are arguably the most important. After a brief review of the statistics of typical wind speed data, a non- Gaussian model for the wind velocity is introduced that is based on a Levy distribution. It is shown how this distribution can be used to derive a stochastic fractional diusion equation for the wind velocity as a function of time whose solution is characterised by the Levy index. A Levy index numerical analysis is then performed on wind velocity data for both …
Estimation Of Beta In A Simple Functional Capital Asset Pricing Model For High Frequency Us Stock Data, Yan Zhang
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This project applies the methods of functional data analysis (FDA) to intra-daily returns of US corporations. It focuses on an extension of the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) to such returns. The CAPM is essentially a linear regression with the slope coefficient β. Returns of an asset are regressed on index return. We compare the estimates of β obtained for the daily and intra-daily returns. The variability of these estimates is assessed by two bootstrap methods. All computations are performed using statistical software R. Customized functions are developed to process the raw data, estimate the parameters and assess their variability. …
Controlling Error Rates With Multiple Positively-Dependent Tests, Abdullah Al Masud
Controlling Error Rates With Multiple Positively-Dependent Tests, Abdullah Al Masud
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
It is a typical feature of high dimensional data analysis, for example a microarray study, that a researcher allows thousands of statistical tests at a time. All inferences for the tests are determined using the p-values; a smaller p-value than the α-level of the test signifies a statistically significant test. As the number of tests increases, the chance of observing some small p-values is very high even when all null hypotheses are true. Consequently, we make wrong conclusions on the hypotheses. This type of potential problem frequently happens when we test several hypotheses simultaneously, i.e., the multiple testing problem. …
Statistical Inference Of A Measure For Two Binomial Variates, Serena Petersen
Statistical Inference Of A Measure For Two Binomial Variates, Serena Petersen
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
We study measures of a comparison for two independent binomial variates which frequently occur in real situations. An estimator for measure of reduction (MOR) is considered for two sample proportions based on a modified maximum likelihood estimation. We study the desirable properties of the estimator: the asymptotic behavior of its unbiasedness and the variance of the estimator. Since the measure ρ is approximately normally distributed when sample sizes are sufficiently large, one may establish approximate confidence intervals for the true value of the estimators. For numerical study, the Monte Carlo experiment is carried out for the various scenarios of two …
Modeling Mortality Rates For Leukemia Between Men And Women In The United States, Blessed Quansah
Modeling Mortality Rates For Leukemia Between Men And Women In The United States, Blessed Quansah
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Leukemia related deaths increased dramatically over the last forty years. Leukemia is a malignant disease or cancer of the bone marrow and blood. It is characterized by the uncontrolled accumulation of blood cells. Leukemia is divided into two categories: myelogenous or lymphocytic, each of which can be acute or chronic. The terms, myelogenous or lymphocytic denote the cell type involved.
In this thesis, the proposed modeling techniques are applied to leukemia deaths data from the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER). In particular, annual deaths data from 1969 to 2007 are used in the data analysis, which includes three major …
Multiple Solutions For An Elliptic Problem Related To Vortex Pairs, Yi Li, Shuangjie Peng
Multiple Solutions For An Elliptic Problem Related To Vortex Pairs, Yi Li, Shuangjie Peng
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
Let Ω be a bounded domain in RN (N⩾2), φ a harmonic function in Ω¯. In this paper we study the existence of solutions to the following problem arising in the study of vortex pairs(Pλ){−Δu=λ(u−φ)+p−1,x∈Ω,u=0,x∈∂Ω. The set Ωp={x∈Ω,u(x)>φ} is called “vortex core”. Existence of solutions whose “vortex core” consists of one component and asymptotic behavior of “vortex core” were studied by many authors for large λ recently. Under the condition that φ has k strictly local minimum points on the boundary ∂Ω, we obtain in this paper that for λ large enough, (Pλ) has a solution with “vortex core” …
Prospective K-8 Teachers’ Knowledge Of Relational Thinking, Marta Magiera, Leigh A. Van Den Kieboom, John Moyer
Prospective K-8 Teachers’ Knowledge Of Relational Thinking, Marta Magiera, Leigh A. Van Den Kieboom, John Moyer
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
The goal of this study was to examine two issues: First, pre-service teachers’ ability and inclination to think relationally prior to instruction about the role relational thinking plays in the K-8 mathematics curriculum. Second, to examine task specific variables possibly associated with pre-service teachers’ inclination to engage in relational thinking. The results revealed that preservice teachers engage in relational thinking about equality, however, their inclination to do so is rather limited. Furthermore, they tend to engage in relational thinking more frequently in the context of arithmetic than algebra-related tasks. Pre-service teachers’ inclination to engage in relational thinking appeared to also …

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Treatment of bovine pulmonary arterial endothelial cells in culture with the phase II enzyme inducer sulforaphane (5 μM, 24 h; sulf-treated) increased cell-lysate NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase (NQO1) activity by 5.7 ± 0.6 (mean ± SEM)-fold, but intact-cell NQO1 activity by only 2.8 ± 0.1-fold compared to control cells. To evaluate the hypothesis that the threshold for sulforaphane-induced intact-cell NQO1 activity reflects a limitation in the capacity to supply NADPH at a sufficient rate to drive all the induced NQO1 to its maximum activity, total KOH-extractable pyridine nucleotides were measured in cells treated with duroquinone to stimulate maximal NQO1 activity. NQO1 activation …

We examine for the first time age-mixing in sexual relationships in a population with very high HIV incidence and prevalence in rural South Africa. The highest levels of age assortativity (the pairing of like with like) were casual partnerships reported by men, the lowest levels were spousal relationships reported by women. Given the age–sex distribution of HIV prevalence in this population, interventions to decrease age-gaps in spousal relationships may be effective in reducing HIV incidence.

Quantitative Interpretation Of A Genetic Model Of Carcinogenesis Using Computer Simulations, Donghai Dai, Brandon Beck, Xiaofang Wang, Cory Howk, Yi Li
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
The genetic model of tumorigenesis by Vogelstein et al. (V theory) and the molecular definition of cancer hallmarks by Hanahan and Weinberg (W theory) represent two of the most comprehensive and systemic understandings of cancer. Here, we develop a mathematical model that quantitatively interprets these seminal cancer theories, starting from a set of equations describing the short life cycle of an individual cell in uterine epithelium during tissue regeneration. The process of malignant transformation of an individual cell is followed and the tissue (or tumor) is described as a composite of individual cells in order to quantitatively account for intra-tumor …
Global Well-Posedness And Asymptotic Behavior Of A Class Of Initial-Boundary-Value Problems Of The Kdv Equation On A Finite Domain, Ivonne Rivas, Muhammad Usman, Bingyu Zhang
Global Well-Posedness And Asymptotic Behavior Of A Class Of Initial-Boundary-Value Problems Of The Kdv Equation On A Finite Domain, Ivonne Rivas, Muhammad Usman, Bingyu Zhang
Mathematics Faculty Publications
In this paper, we study a class of initial boundary value problem (IBVP) of the Korteweg- de Vries equation posed on a ?nite interval with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions. The IBVP is known to be locally well-posed, but its global L2 a priori estimate is not available and therefore it is not clear whether its solutions exist globally or blow up in finite time. It is shown in this paper that the solutions exist globally as long as their initial value and the associated boundary data are small, and moreover, those solutions decay exponentially if their boundary data decay exponentially.

Characterizing The Arc, Paul Bankston
Characterizing The Arc, Paul Bankston
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
We offer a mathematical logic framework for talking about when a given topological space is characterizable relative to a “class of its peers.” The framework involves a relational alphabet for which there is a natural way of assigning relational structures to spaces in the peer class; and a putative characterization of the given space consists of a set of first-order sentences over that alphabet, all true for the space. The attempted characterization is a success if any peer space satisfying all the sentences is inevitably homeomorphic to the given space.
For example, it has long been known that the arc …

Common Hypercyclic Vectors For The Conjugate Class Of A Hypercyclic Operator, Kit C. Chan, Rebecca Sanders
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Given a separable, infinite dimensional Hilbert space, it was recently shown by the authors that there is a path of chaotic operators, which is dense in the operator algebra with the strong operator topology, and along which every operator has the exact same dense Gδ set of hypercyclic vectors. In the present work, we show that the conjugate set of any hypercyclic operator on a separable, infinite dimensional Banach space always contains a path of operators which is dense with the strong operator topology, and yet the set of common hypercyclic vectors for the entire path is a dense …

Signal And Noise In Complex-Valued Sense Mr Image Reconstruction, Daniel B. Rowe, Iain P. Bruce
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
In fMRI, brain images are not measured instantaneously and a volume of images can take two seconds to acquire at a low 64x64 resolution. Significant effort has been put forth on many fronts to decrease image acquisition time including parallel imaging. In parallel imaging, sub-sampled spatial frequency points are measured in parallel and combined to form a single image. Measurement time is decreased at the expense of increased image reconstruction difficulty and time. One significant parallel imaging technique known as SENSE utilizes a complex-valued regression coefficient estimation process with transposes replaced by conjugate transposes. However, in SENSE the noise structure …

The description by Johnston-Thom and the second author of the inverse semigroups S for which the lattice LJ(S) of full inverse subsemigroups of S is join semidistributive is used to describe those for which (a) the lattice L(S) of all inverse subsemigroups or (b) the lattice lo(S) of convex inverse subsemigroups have that property. In contrast with the methods used by the authors to investigate lower semimodularity, the methods are based on decompositions via GS, the union of the subgroups of the semigroup (which is necessarily cryptic).

The competition graph of a digraph, introduced by Cohen in 1968, has been extensively studied. More recently, in 2000, Cho, Kim, and Nam defined the m-step competition graph. In this paper, we offer another generalization of the competition graph. We define the (1,2)-step competition graph of a digraph D, denoted C1,2(D), as the graph on V(D) where {x,y}∈E(C1,2(D)) if and only if there exists a vertex z≠x,y, such that either dD−y( …
Balanced Pod For Model Reduction Of Linear Pde Systems: Convergence Theory, John R. Singler
Balanced Pod For Model Reduction Of Linear Pde Systems: Convergence Theory, John R. Singler
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We consider convergence analysis for a model reduction algorithm for a class of linear infinite dimensional systems. The algorithm computes an approximate balanced truncation of the system using solution snapshots of specific linear infinite dimensional differential equations. The algorithm is related to the proper orthogonal decomposition, and it was first proposed for systems of ordinary differential equations by Rowley (Int. J. Bifurc. Chaos Appl. Sci. Eng. 15(3), 997-1013, 2005). For the convergence analysis, we consider the algorithm in terms of the Hankel operator of the system, rather than the product of the system Gramians as originally proposed by Rowley. For …

Balanced Pod For Linear Pde Robust Control Computations, John R. Singler, Belinda A. Batten
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
A mathematical model of a physical system is never perfect; therefore, robust control laws are necessary for guaranteed stabilization of the nominal model and also "nearby" systems, including hopefully the actual physical system. We consider the computation of a robust control law for large-scale nite dimensional linear systems and a class of linear distributed parameter systems. The controller is robust with respect to left coprime factor perturbations of the nominal system. We present an algorithm based on balanced proper orthogonal decomposition to compute the nonstandard features of this robust control law. Convergence theory is given, and numerical results are presented …

A Model Based Feedback Controller For Wing-Twist Via Piezoceramic Actuation, John R. Singler, Belinda A. Batten
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper we present a model for a rubber plate with piezoceramic actuators to represent a bioinspired flexible wing. Using a Galerkin based finite element approximation to the system, we compute a linear quadratic based tracking control for piezoelectric actuators placed along both leading and trailing edges. Using these piezoceramic devices, we demonstrate the effectiveness of model based feedback control in achieving a desired wing tip position; this modified shape is analogous to aircraft roll moment generation via wing twist.
Convergent Snapshot Algorithms For Infinite-Dimensional Lyapunov Equations, John R. Singler
Convergent Snapshot Algorithms For Infinite-Dimensional Lyapunov Equations, John R. Singler
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We consider two algorithms to approximate the solution Z of a class of stable operator Lyapunov equations of the form AZ + ZA* + BB* = 0. The algorithms utilize time snapshots of solutions of certain linear infinite-dimensional differential equations to construct the approximations. Matrix approximations of the operators a and B are not required and the algorithms are applicable as long as the rank of B is relatively small. The first algorithm produces an optimal low-rank approximate solution using proper orthogonal decomposition. The second algorithm approximates the product of the solution with a few vectors and can be implemented …

This systematic review of mathematics educational technology literature identified 1356 manuscripts addressing the integration of educational technology into mathematics instruction. The manuscripts were analyzed using three frameworks (Research Design, Teacher Knowledge, and TPACK) and three supplementary lenses (Data Sources, Outcomes, and NCTM Principles) to produce a database to support future research syntheses and meta-analyses. Preliminary analyses of student and teacher outcomes (e.g., knowledge, cognition, affect, and performance) suggest that the effects of incorporating graphing calculator and dynamic geometry technologies have been abundantly studied; however, the usefulness of the results was often limited by missing information regarding measures of validity, reliability, …

Objective: Timely identification of systematic changes in radiation delivery of an imaging system can lead to a reduction in risk for the patients involved. However, existing quality assurance programs involving the routine testing of equipment performance using phantoms are limited in their ability to effectively carry out this task. To address this issue we propose the implementation of an ongoing monitoring process that utilizes procedural data to identify unexpected large or small radiation exposures for individual patients, as well as to detect persistent changes in the radiation output of imaging platforms.
Methods: Data used in this study were obtained from …

Flipping The Winner Of A Poset Game, Adam O. Kalinich '12
Student Publications & Research
Partially-ordered set games, also called poset games, are a class of two-player combinatorial games. The playing field consists of a set of elements, some of which are greater than other elements. Two players take turns removing an element and all elements greater than it, and whoever takes the last element wins. Examples of poset games include Nim and Chomp. We investigate the complexity of computing which player of a poset game has a winning strategy. We give an inductive procedure that modifies poset games to change the nim-value which informally captures the winning strategies in the game. For a generic …

Statistical Properties Of A Convoluted Beta-Weibull Distribution, Jianan Sun
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
A new class of distributions recently developed involves the logit of the beta distribution. Among this class of distributions are the beta-normal (Eugene et.al. (2002)); beta-Gumbel (Nadarajah and Kotz (2004)); beta-exponential (Nadarajah and Kotz (2006)); beta-Weibull (Famoye et al. (2005)); beta-Rayleigh (Akinsete and Lowe (2008)); beta-Laplace (Kozubowski and Nadarajah (2008)); and beta-Pareto (Akinsete et al. (2008)), among a few others. Many useful statistical properties arising from these distributions and their applications to real life data have been discussed in the literature. One approach by which a new statistical distribution is generated is by the transformation of random variables having known …

Robustness Analysis Of Slow Learning In Iterative Learning Control Systems, John R. Singler, Douglas A. Bristow
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper examines robust stability and robust transient growth in Iterative Learning Control (ILC). It is well known that small perturbations in system dynamics can result in very large transient growth of some ILC systems. Even larger perturbations can result in instability. One ad hoc technique commonly employed to improve robustness is to slow the learning rate by reducing the learning filter gain or lowpass filtering the error signal. Here, pseudospectra analysis is used to analyze the robustness of ILC algorithms with slow learning. It is found that robustness bounds can be increased and transient growth decreased with decreasing learning …
