The SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS is performed on the transformation coefficients of the Frank XYZ signals generating standard 12-lead ECG with respect to diagnosis. The analysis is adapted for the individual waveform and per each lead. The disease/abnormality categories are described in terms of discrete pattern classes based on criteria used by Marquette Electronics, Inc. The nonlinear global sensitivity analysis method developed by Shuler, et al, is selected for this project. To assess risk of chronic respiratory disease symptoms due to long-term exposure to the ambient levels of TSP, oxidants, SO2 and NO2 in photochemical air pollution, symptoms were ascertained using NHLBI questions on 8,572 Southern California Seventh-day Adventist, nonsmokers, 25 years and older, who lived eleven years or longer in their 1977 residential area. Tobacco smoke, active and passive, and occupational exposures were measured by questionnaires, as well as lifestyle characteristics relative to pollution exposure such as time spent outside and residence history. The reliability of an intraseason yield estimation technique which is commonly used by Pacific salmon harvest managers is evaluated for applicability to a variety of commercial finfish and crustacean fisheries. The estimation technique is known as the average timing or the average performance model. The method is not easily related to standard statistical models, but does show some similarity to both a single parameter linear regression model and the ratio estimator of sampling theory. An increase in dietary cholesterol and cholic acid will produce hypercholesterolemia in rats. For ten months, two groups of rats (six in each group) were fed commercial rat pellets (control group) or rat pellets plus cholesterol (1%) and cholic acid (0.25%) (experimental group). A blood sample from each animal was divided into three aliquots for three separate experiments on the erythrocytes: a membrane cholesterol and phospholipid determination, a 3-0-[¹⁴C] methylglucose (30MG) transport determination, and a 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3 DPG) determination. It is not always possible to estimate the sample sizes needed in health services research because special formulas are needed, and the necessary data may not be available to use in the formulas. We provide some useful formulas for the sample size required in comparing the means of two groups. Psychological, idiosyncratic, social, therapeutic and physiological factors were reported as affecting esophageal voice development. Hospital admission rates are often shown and interpreted without consideration of their inherent variability, which may lead to faulty conclusions. This may be because theoretically correct variance estimates are not known for the type of estimates usually used; i.e., total admissions divided by total person-months of observation. Here, correct methods for testing and estimation are shown for situations where they exist. For other types of data, approximate procedures are proposed and their properties examined theoretically and empirically, yielding recommendations for exact and approximate estimation and testing methods for admission rates in common situations.

The adequacy of the negative exponential model with one independent variable, days or accumulated time, as a descriptive equation for aquatic leaf litter processing was examined. The effect of adding a second independent variable, degree days or accumulated temperature, to the model was also examined. The two variable negative exponential model was shown to have at least two advantages over the single variable model. The two variable model adequately fits litter processing data for more cases than the single variable model. The expanded model also allows determination of rate coefficients for various temperature levels of the experiment rather than assuming …

Inland Counties Comprehensive Health Planning Council wished to estimate the psychiatric bed needs by type (such as state hospitals, board and care homes, etc.) in San Bernardino County from the distributions of patient arrivals and of lengths of stay. A statistical description of the system during 1973 was considered the first step toward estimating future bed needs. A computer simulation model using IBM's programming language General Purpose Simulation System (GPSS) was developed and was found to be unsatisfactory.

A descriptive-comparative survey using content analysis of medical records has been done to determine the frequency with which emotional disorders are identified by medical personnel in the population hospitalized in small general hospitals in north-central Nebraska.

A systematic, random sample of medical records was taken from two hospitals arbitrarily included in the study on the basis of bed capacity and distance from mental health facilities.

The study was designed to assess the level of anxiety experienced by chronic schizophrenic patients when two different methods of leadership were used in group therapy. A search of literature revealed suggestions for modification of leadership approach due to the tenuous anxiety tolerance of chronic schizophrenics but no studies were found directly related to the amount of anxiety resulting from different leadership approaches.

The purpose of this study was to improve the management of patient problems through the deliberate use of the nursing process by providing the public health nurse with a structured nursing care plan. The familiar x ² test is ordinarily used to compare percentage distributions of categorical data for two or more independent samples. A more accurate com parison of the percentages is sometimes obtained if the samples consist of matched individuals. The NcNemar test is generally used when comparing only two related samples. Where there are three or more samples the Cochran Q test is used. Both of these tests apply only to the case of dichotomized responses. This thesis extends the Cochran Q test to the case where the responses are multinomial. A generalized statistic corresponding to Cochran's result is obtained. …

Proper positioning is used to relieve dyspnea, edema, and fatigue in congestive heart failure patients. According to the review of literature, improved ventilation as measured by specific lung volumes and lung mechanics occurred with upright positioning in normal persons. The effects of specific changes in lung volumes related to position change in congestive heart failure patients has not been documented in literature, although various recommendations related to positioning are made. 2. to show by computer simulations that the group sequential method is appropriate when using the logistic regression model.

In section 1.2, clinical trials are defined with an emphasis on Phase III clinical trials. This exploratory study was conducted to discover to what extent patients follow their low-cholesterol diets. If they did not, the reasons were investigated. It was hoped that the findings would aid in defining areas of instruction which need greater emphasis when patients receive instruction concerning a low-cholesterol diet.

An interview guide was used as a data gathering tool. The dietitians at one private teaching hospital recorded all dietary prescriptions sent to them during the specified period and ten physicians were contacted for permission to include their patients in the study. The problem of this study was to review 100 open heart surgical cases in a selected hospital to determine the changes occurring in central venous pressure in relation to blood loss.

The review of literature revealed that central venous pressure is an important factor in determining immediate postoperative care of open heart surgical patients. If central venous pressure falls below the normal range of 5 to 10 centimeters of water, hemorrhage is suspected. If central venous pressure is elevated between 15 and 20 centimeters of water, cardiac tamponade is suspected.

Data from thirty medical records of phenylketonuric children under treatment were investigated to determine at which serum phenylalanine level (0-3.9 mg. %, 4-7.9 mg %, 8-11.9 mg. %, greater than 12 mg. %) there would be the greatest increase in intelligence. The children involved in the study were divided into the following groups according to the age dietary treatment was initiated: 0 through 5 months, 6 through 11 months, 12 through 23 months, and over 2 years of age.
