Vibrational Relaxation Theory For Systems Embedded In Microscopically Specified Reservoirs, Anastasia Aemilia Ierides May 2018

Vibrational Relaxation Theory For Systems Embedded In Microscopically Specified Reservoirs, Anastasia Aemilia Ierides

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This dissertation is a study of the theoretical framework of the practical as well as fundamental problem of the process of relaxation to equilibrium of quantum mechanical systems. The fundamental aspect is concerned with the simultaneous occurrence of decoherence and population equilibration. The practical aspect deals with experimental observations of vibrational relaxation of molecules embedded in liquids or solids. The systems include, but are not limited to, the nondegenerate dimer and harmonic oscillator, in one case weak and in the other strong, interaction with a thermal bath. The time dependence of the energy and the temperature dependence of the relaxation …

Standard And Anomalous Wave Transport Inside Random Media, Xujun Ma May 2018

Standard And Anomalous Wave Transport Inside Random Media, Xujun Ma

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis is a study of wave transport inside random media using random matrix theory. Anderson localization plays a central role in wave transport in random media. As a consequence of destructive interference in multiple scattering, the wave function decays exponentially inside random systems. Anderson localization is a wave effect that applies to both classical waves and quantum waves. Random matrix theory has been successfully applied to study the statistical properties of transport and localization of waves. Particularly, the solution of the Dorokhov-Mello-Pereyra-Kumar (DMPK) equation gives the distribution of transmission.

Band Filling And Temperature Effects On Electrical Conductivity In Strongly Correlated Hybridized Electron Systems, Dylan T. Meyer Jan 2018

Band Filling And Temperature Effects On Electrical Conductivity In Strongly Correlated Hybridized Electron Systems, Dylan T. Meyer

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

We investigate the effects of band filling as well as temperature change on the electrical conductivity of materials with strong interelectron interaction as well as band hybridization. This is done by use of the irreducible two-particle Green function method applied to strongly correlated electron systems described by the Periodic Anderson Model. It was found that there is a definite peak in electrical conductivity at low band occupancy when the d-energy sub-band is half filled. Conductivity was found to have a sharp drop with an increase in temperature as a result of thermal dispersion as well as a change in the …

Dynamic Self-Assembly And Self-Organized Transport Of Magnetic Micro-Swimmers, Gašper Kokot, German Kolmakov V, Igor S. Aranson, Alexey Snezhko Nov 2017

Dynamic Self-Assembly And Self-Organized Transport Of Magnetic Micro-Swimmers, Gašper Kokot, German Kolmakov V, Igor S. Aranson, Alexey Snezhko

Publications and Research

We demonstrate experimentally and in computer simulations that magnetic microfloaters can self-organize into various functional structures while energized by an external alternating (ac) magnetic field. The structures exhibit self-propelled motion and an ability to carry a cargo along a pre-defined path. The morphology of the self-assembled swimmers is controlled by the frequency and amplitude of the magnetic field.

Slowly strained solids deform via intermittent slips that exhibit a material-independent critical size distribution. Here, by comparing two disparate systems - granular materials and bulk metallic glasses - we show evidence that not only the statistics of slips but also their dynamics are remarkably similar, i.e. independent of the microscopic details of the material. By resolving and comparing the full time evolution of avalanches in bulk metallic glasses and granular materials, we uncover a regime of universal deformation dynamics. We experimentally verify the predicted universal scaling functions for the dynamics of individual avalanches in both systems, and show that both …

Relaxation Of Charge In Monolayer Graphene: Fast Nonlinear Diffusion Versus Coulomb Effects, Eugene B. Kolomeisky, Joseph P. Straley Jan 2017

Relaxation Of Charge In Monolayer Graphene: Fast Nonlinear Diffusion Versus Coulomb Effects, Eugene B. Kolomeisky, Joseph P. Straley

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Pristine monolayer graphene exhibits very poor screening because the density of states vanishes at the Dirac point. As a result, charge relaxation is controlled by the effects of zero-point motion (rather than by the Coulomb interaction) over a wide range of parameters. Combined with the fact that graphene possesses finite intrinsic conductivity, this leads to a regime of relaxation described by a nonlinear diffusion equation with a diffusion coefficient that diverges at zero charge density. Some consequences of this fast diffusion are self-similar superdiffusive regimes of relaxation, the development of a charge depleted region at the interface between electron- and …

Classical Transport In Disordered Systems, Antonios Papaioannou Jun 2016

Classical Transport In Disordered Systems, Antonios Papaioannou

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis reports on the manifestation of structural disorder on molecular transport and it consists of two parts. Part I discusses the relations between classical transport and the underlying structural complexity of the system. Both types of molecular diffusion, namely Gaussian and non-Gaussian are presented and the relevant time regimes are discussed. In addition the concept of structural universality is introduced and connected with the diffusion metrics. One of the most robust techniques for measuring molecular mean square displacements is magnetic resonance. This method requires encoding and subsequently reading out after an experimentally controlled time, a phase ϕ to the …

Temperature Dependent Surface Reconstruction Of Freely Suspended Films Of 4-N-Heptyloxybenzylidene-4-N-Heptylaniline, Daniel E. Martinez Zambrano Jun 2015

Temperature Dependent Surface Reconstruction Of Freely Suspended Films Of 4-N-Heptyloxybenzylidene-4-N-Heptylaniline, Daniel E. Martinez Zambrano

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Surfaces of freely suspended thick films of 4-n-heptyloxybenzylidene-4-n-heptylaniline (7O.7) in the crystalline-B phase have been imaged using non-contact mode atomic force microscopy. Steps are observed on the surface of the film with a height of 3.0 +/- 0.1 nm corresponding to the upright molecular length of 7O.7. In addition, we find that the step width varies with temperature between 56 and 59 degrees C. The steps are many times wider than the molecular length, suggesting that the steps are not on the surface but instead originate from edge dislocations in the interior. Using a strain model for liquid crystalline layers …

Morphological Study Of Surface Corrosion In Carbon Steel Using Fractal Methods., Abdul Mohaimen W Fagri Jun 2010

Morphological Study Of Surface Corrosion In Carbon Steel Using Fractal Methods., Abdul Mohaimen W Fagri

Student Works (2010-2019)

Corrosion can be defined as the disintegration of a material into its constituent atoms due to chemical reactions with its surroundings. There are various chemical and physical factors that affect the rate and mechanisms of corrosion processes. In this study, we focus on the corrosion of carbon steel in mineral water at room temperature. The morphologies of corroded surface are characterized using fractal analysis. The steel plates of 10cmx10cmx0.2cm are first polished using abrasive papers of different coarseness until smooth surfaces are obtained. The samples are placed in glass dish filled with mineral water and a simple imaging procedure using …

Kirill Belashchenko Publications

Voltage-controlled spin electronics is crucial for continued progress in information technology. It aims at reduced power consumption, increased integration density and enhanced functionality where non-volatile memory is combined with highspeed logical processing. Promising spintronic device concepts use the electric control of interface and surface magnetization. From the combination of magnetometry, spin-polarized photoemission spectroscopy, symmetry arguments and first-principles calculations, we show that the (0001) surface of magnetoelectric Cr2O3 has a roughness-insensitive, electrically switchable magnetization. Using a ferromagnetic Pd/Co multilayer deposited on the (0001) surface of a Cr2O3 single crystal, we achieve reversible, room-temperature isothermal switching …

Anisotropy Of Exchange Stiffness And Its Effect On The Properties Of Magnets, K. D. Belashchenko Apr 2004

Anisotropy Of Exchange Stiffness And Its Effect On The Properties Of Magnets, K. D. Belashchenko

Kirill Belashchenko Publications

Using the spin-spiral formulation of the tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital method, the principal components of the exchange stiffness tensor are calculated for typical hard magnets including tetragonal CoPt-type and hexagonal YCo5 alloys. The exchange stiffness is strongly anisotropic in all studied alloys. This anisotropy makes the domain wall surface tension anisotropic. Competition between this anisotropic surface tension and magnetostatic energy controls the formation and dynamics of nanoscale domain structures in hard magnets. Anisotropic domain wall bending is described in detail from the general point of view and with application to cellular Sm–Co magnets. It is shown that the repulsive …
