Superconductivity Of Amorphous And Crystalline Re–Lu Films, Serafim Teknowijoyo, Armen Gulian

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We report on superconducting properties of a novel material: rhenium-lutetium films. Different compositions of RexLu binary are explored from x ≈ 3.8 to close to pure Re stoichiometry. The highest critical temperature, up to 7 K, is obtained for x ≈ 10.5 in accordance with electron dispersive spectroscopy results. Depending on the deposition conditions, polycrystalline or amorphous films are obtainable, both of which are interesting for practical use. Crystalline structure of polycrystalline phase is identified as a non-centrosymmetric superconductor using grazing incidence x-ray diffractometry. Superconducting properties were characterized both resistively and magnetically. Magnetoresistivity and AC/DC susceptibility measurements allowed …

Synchronicity: An Analysis Of Einstein's Halfway Rule, Preslava Nikolova Jan 2024

Synchronicity: An Analysis Of Einstein's Halfway Rule, Preslava Nikolova

Rushton Journal of Undergraduate Humanities Research

For the modern world to function, Global Positioning System satellites must synchronize to clocks on Earth. This paper examines a concept that underlies GPS systems, namely Albert Einstein’s halfway rule—the idea that a line of simultaneity exists between two events in different systems. This essay discusses how Einstein used conventionalist methods to establish ½ as a constant value for σ to take advantage of the property of symmetry.

Probing The Ising Model’S Thermodynamics Through Restricted Boltzmann Machines, Xiaobei (Emma) Zhang Jan 2024

Probing The Ising Model’S Thermodynamics Through Restricted Boltzmann Machines, Xiaobei (Emma) Zhang

HMC Senior Theses

This thesis explores the connection between physics and machine learning by using Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBMs) to study the thermodynamic properties of the Ising model. The Ising model is a simple but realistic model that captures the magnetic behavior of a system, where spins occupy a lattice of sites and different spin configurations correspond to different energies. The model exhibits phase transitions between ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases as a function of temperature. RBMs are two-layered neural networks that can learn probability distributions over binary spins. The study generates 2D Ising model data at different temperatures using Monte Carlo simulations, including …

Cataloging And Locating Icequakes On The Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica To Determine Long Term Rift Behavior, Simon F. Eisl

Honors Theses and Capstones

This report provides an introduction to the ARROW project and seismic behavior on ice shelves. We catalogged icequakes using seismic analysis code (SAC) and located prominent icequakes using WAVES from a seismic dataset collected from December 2nd, 2023 and January 5th, 2024. The analysis of this dataset will be used to model similar deformation systems found in icy ocean worlds in the outer Solar System like the Tiger Stripe rifts found on Enceladus. We looked into the deformation of rift zone WR4, why and how these icequakes occur along WR4, and the rift's interior material make up. Particular hotspots of …

Bayesian Inference In Reinforcement Learning Neural Networks During A Markov Decision Processes?, Katherine Graham Jan 2024

Bayesian Inference In Reinforcement Learning Neural Networks During A Markov Decision Processes?, Katherine Graham

Scripps Senior Theses

The predictive mind theory proposes that brains work in a way that makes predictions about future stimuli to process information efficiently and accurately. Bayesian brain theory suggests that the brain utilizes Bayesian probability models to make predictions, while the free-energy minimization hypothesis proposes that these predictions are made to minimize energy or uncertainty, ensuring accurate perceptions. Vertechi et al. (2020) explored animal participants’ utilization of stimulus-bound strategy versus inference-based strategy to solve a Markov decision process with a 2-state environment, one of which is always active. These sites have a certain probability of switching to a different site and the …

Plant Root Hair Adhesion Mediated Through Variation In Sodium Ion Concentration, Natasha Mulenga Jan 2024

Plant Root Hair Adhesion Mediated Through Variation In Sodium Ion Concentration, Natasha Mulenga

Honors Program Theses

This study investigates the effects of sodium ion (Na+) concentration on the adhesion of Brassica Rapa root hairs using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Plant root hair adhesion to soil particles plays a crucial role in anchoring plants and facilitating nutrient uptake. Previous research has shown that calcium ions (Ca2+) cross-link pectin molecules in the cell wall, increasing rigidity and reducing adhesion. As Na+ binds to pectin without cross-linking, we expected that root hairs exposed to sodium chloride (NaCl) solutions would exhibit longer adhesive interactions and similar binding forces compared to those exposed to calcium chloride (CaCl2) solutions of equal concentrations. …

Proof Of Principle For A Self-Governing Prediction And Forecasting Reward Algorithm, Jose Osvaldo Gonzalez-Hernandez, Jonathan Marino, Ted Rogers, Brandon Velasco Jan 2024

Proof Of Principle For A Self-Governing Prediction And Forecasting Reward Algorithm, Jose Osvaldo Gonzalez-Hernandez, Jonathan Marino, Ted Rogers, Brandon Velasco

Physics Faculty Publications

We use Monte Carlo techniques to simulate an organized prediction competition between a group of scientific experts acting under the influence of a "self-governing" prediction reward algorithm. Our aim is to illustrate the advantages of a specific type of reward distribution rule that is designed to address some of the limitations of traditional forecast scoring rules. The primary extension of this algorithm as compared with standard forecast scoring is that it incorporates measures of both group consensus and question relevance directly into the reward distribution algorithm. Our model of the prediction competition includes parameters that control both the level of …

Cats, Dogs, And Roll Waves, John Adam Jan 2024

Cats, Dogs, And Roll Waves, John Adam

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

This article discusses the phenomenon of roll waves, which are shock-like patterns separated by smooth profiles that occur in flood waves. The author mentions that in a steady-state situation, the drag forces on the water in the channel are balanced by the down-slope gravitational force. The article also includes questions for readers to estimate the speed and length of the roll waves, as well as determine the stability of the flow. The author provides additional information about the Chezy formula, an empirical equation used in fluid mechanics to estimate the mean flow velocity of open channel flow.

Frieze And Tiling Groups In The Lorentz-Minkowski Plane, Michael O. Lynch Jan 2024

Frieze And Tiling Groups In The Lorentz-Minkowski Plane, Michael O. Lynch

Honors Undergraduate Theses

In this thesis, there is a presentation of the isometries from the Lorentz-Minkowski Plane and a solution to the Frieze Patterns. There is a suggestion for a solution for the Tiling Patterns. Since the construction of these mathematical structures is well understood in the Euclidean plane, one can follow a similar approach to the construction of such objects to find the unique number of groups that describe all possible frieze patterns while there is a suggestion of the number for the tiling case. There is a reflection of these results in a computational and cosmological context.

Cats, Dogs, And Roll Waves: Solutions For Fermi Questions, April 2024, John Adam Jan 2024

Cats, Dogs, And Roll Waves: Solutions For Fermi Questions, April 2024, John Adam

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

On a hot afternoon in western North Carolina, the heavens opened and (to mix metaphors) it started raining “cats and dogs.” The rain was torrential, and soon a river of water was flowing downhill into the parking lot. In rivers and dam spillways, these are known as flood waves. The picture shows a particular type of flood waves known s roll waves—shock-like patterns separated by smooth profiles. In a steady-state situation, the drag forces on the water in the channel are balanced by the down-slope gravitational force. The dimensionless friction coefficient is C, the stream depth is h, v is …

Snow Spheres And Ice Cubes, John Adam Jan 2024

Snow Spheres And Ice Cubes, John Adam

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

This article, titled "Snow spheres and ice cubes," discusses the melting of snowballs and ice cubes. It explains that in standard calculus textbooks, it is shown that a snowball melting at a rate proportional to its surface area will have its radius decrease at a constant rate, assuming it remains spherical as it melts. The article then poses several questions related to this concept, including the proportion of a smaller snow sphere that remains when half of a larger one has melted, the value of p for which the smaller sphere first melts, and the volume reduction factor for cubes …

A Floquet Solver For Time Periodic Open Quantum Systems, Fenton Ross Clawson Jan 2024

A Floquet Solver For Time Periodic Open Quantum Systems, Fenton Ross Clawson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Computational physics has been a backbone of experimental and theoretical physics since the 1940’s, when the first nuclear bomb and ballistic simulations were per- formed at Los Alamos Laboratory. Nowadays, however, simulation of open quan- tum systems has been formalized into coding packages and user-friendly functions, such as QuTiP or Qiskit, which allow users to simulate these systems without hav- ing the in-depth knowledge required to build the computational backbone from the ground-up. With the shift in modern quantum physics towards the realization of quantum computation, a strong computational background is still necessary to lend validity to theoretical results and …

Applications Of Independent And Identically Distributed (Iid) Random Processes In Polarimetry And Climatology, Dan Kestner Jan 2024

Applications Of Independent And Identically Distributed (Iid) Random Processes In Polarimetry And Climatology, Dan Kestner

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The unifying theme of this thesis is the characterization of “perfect randomness,” i.e., independent and identically distributed (IID) stochastic processes as these are applied in physical science. Two specific and mathematically distinct applications are chosen: (i) Radar and optical polarimetry; (ii) Analysis of time series in meteorology. In (i), IID process of a special kind, namely, with a distribution defined by symmetry, is used to link its multivariate Gaussian density to uniformity on the Poincaré sphere. This “statistical ellipsometry” approach is then used to relate polarimetric mismatches or imbalances to ellipsometric variables and suitably chosen cross-correlation measures. In (ii), recently …
