Complex Solutions Of The Time Fractional Gross-Pitaevskii (Gp) Equation With External Potential By Using A Reliable Method, Nasir Taghizadeh, Mona N. Foumani

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this article, modified (G'/G )-expansion method is presented to establish the exact complex solutions of the time fractional Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation in the sense of the conformable fractional derivative. This method is an effective method in finding exact traveling wave solutions of nonlinear evolution equations (NLEEs) in mathematical physics. The present approach has the potential to be applied to other nonlinear fractional differential equations. Based on two transformations, fractional GP equation can be converted into nonlinear ordinary differential equation of integer orders. In the end, we will discuss the solutions of the fractional GP equation with external potentials.

On The Global Existence And Boundedness Of Solutions Of Nonlinear Vector Differential Equations Of Third Order, Timur Ayhan, Cemil Tunç

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we give some criteria to ensure the global existence and boundedness of solutions to a kind of third order nonlinear vector differential equations. By using the Lyapunov's direct method, we obtain a new result on the topic and give an example for the illustrations. Our result includes, completes and improves some earlier results in the literature.

Exact Implicit Solution Of Nonlinear Heat Transfer In Rectangular Straight Fin Using Symmetry Reduction Methods, M. S. Abdel Latif, A. H. Abdel Kader, H. M. Nour

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, the exact implicit solution of the second order nonlinear ordinary differential equation which governing heat transfer in rectangular fin is obtained using symmetry reduction methods. General relationship among the temperature at the fin tip, the temperature gradient at the fin base, the mode of heat transfer, 𝑛 and the fin parameters 𝑁 and ℰ is obtained. Some numerical examples are discussed and it is shown that the temperature of fin increases when approaching from the heat source. The relationship between the fin efficiency and the temperature of fin tip is obtained for any value of the mode …

Boundary-Layer Flow Of Nanofluids Over A Moving Surface In The Presence Of Thermal Radiation, Viscous Dissipation And Chemical Reaction, Eshetu Haile, B. Shankar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The flow problem presented in the paper is boundary-layer flow of nanofluids over a moving surface in the presence of thermal radiation, viscous dissipation and chemical reaction. The plate is assumed to move in the same or opposite direction to the free stream which depends on the sign of the velocity parameter. The partial differential equations appearing in the governing equations are transformed into a couple of nonlinear ordinary differential equations using similarity transformations. The transformed equations in turn are solved numerically by the shooting method along with the fourth order Runge-Kutta integration technique. Influences of the pertinent parameters in …

Kink, Singular Soliton And Periodic Solutions To Class Of Nonlinear Equations, Marwan Alquran, Safwan Al-Shara, Sabreen Al-Nimrat

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we extend the ordinary differential Duffing equation into a partial differential equation. We study the traveling wave solutions to this model by using the G'/G expansion method. Then, based on the obtained results given for the Duffing equation, we generate kink, singular soliton and periodic solutions for a coupled integrable dispersionless nonlinear system. All the solutions given in this work are verified.

Implicit-Explicit Higher-Order Time Integration Schemes For Computations Of Structural Dynamics With Fluid-Structure Interaction, José C. Pedro, Mapundi K. Banda, Precious Sibanda

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper higher order implicit Runge-Kutta schemes are applied to fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulations. A staggered approach with a structural predictor is applied to an FSI problem. The equations governing the dynamics of the structure are integrated in time by the Explicit Single Diagonal Implicit Runge-Kutta (ESDIRK) schemes and the arbitrary high order finite volume scheme is taken as the fluid solver. The performance of the ESDIRK scheme of order of convergence three to five is tested. Comparative studies with other time integration schemes which have been successfully applied to FSI problems are undertaken. Comparisons to test the performance …

Four Tails Problems For Dynamical Collapse Theories, Kelvin J. Mcqueen Jan 2015

Four Tails Problems For Dynamical Collapse Theories, Kelvin J. Mcqueen

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

The primary quantum mechanical equation of motion entails that measurements typically do not have determinate outcomes, but result in superpositions of all possible outcomes. Dynamical collapse theories (e.g. GRW) supplement this equation with a stochastic Gaussian collapse function, intended to collapse the superposition of outcomes into one outcome. But the Gaussian collapses are imperfect in a way that leaves the superpositions intact. This is the tails problem. There are several ways of making this problem more precise. But many authors dismiss the problem without considering the more severe formulations. Here I distinguish four distinct tails problems. The first (bare tails …

The Investigation Of Surplus Of Energy And Signal Propagation At Time-Domain Waveguide Modes, Özlem Işık, Zeynep F. Koçak, Emre Eroğlu Dec 2014

The Investigation Of Surplus Of Energy And Signal Propagation At Time-Domain Waveguide Modes, Özlem Işık, Zeynep F. Koçak, Emre Eroğlu

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Classical waveguide theory has been developed bearing on Bernoulli’s product method which results in separation of space and time variables in Maxwell’s equations. The time-harmonic waveguide modes have been stated mathematically for transmitting signals along the waveguides. As a starting point, present studies on transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) waveguide modes with previous results are taken and exhibited in an advanced form. They have been obtained within the framework of an evolutionary approach to solve Maxwell’s equations with time derivative. As a result every modal field is obtained in the form of a product of vector functions of transverse coordinates …

Low Mach Number Fluctuating Hydrodynamics Of Diffusively Mixing Fluids, Aleksandar Donev, Andy J. Nonaka, Yifei Sun, Thomas Fai, Alejandro Garcia, John B. Bell Jan 2014

Low Mach Number Fluctuating Hydrodynamics Of Diffusively Mixing Fluids, Aleksandar Donev, Andy J. Nonaka, Yifei Sun, Thomas Fai, Alejandro Garcia, John B. Bell

Faculty Publications

We formulate low Mach number fluctuating hydrodynamic equations appropriate for modeling diffusive mixing in isothermal mixtures of fluids with different density and transport coefficients. These equations eliminate the fast isentropic fluctuations in pressure associated with the propagation of sound waves by replacing the equation of state with a local thermodynamic constraint. We demonstrate that the low Mach number model preserves the spatio-temporal spectrum of the slower diffusive fluctuations. We develop a strictly conservative finite-volume spatial discretization of the low Mach number fluctuating equations in both two and three dimensions. We construct several explicit Runge-Kutta temporal integrators that strictly maintain the …

Viscosity Dependence Of Faraday Wave Formation Thresholds, Lisa Michelle Slaughter Dec 2013

Viscosity Dependence Of Faraday Wave Formation Thresholds, Lisa Michelle Slaughter

Physics

This experiment uses an electromagnetic shaker to produce standing wave patterns on the surface of a vertically oscillating sample of silicon liquid. These surface waves, known as Faraday waves, form shapes such as squares, lines, and hexagons. They are known to be dependent upon the frequency and amplitude of the forcing as well as on the viscosity and depth of the liquid in the dish. At a depth of 4mm and for various silicon liquids having kinematic viscosities of 10, 20, and 38 cSt, we determined the acceleration at which patterns form for frequencies between 10 and 60 Hz. For …

Dispersion Of A Solute In Hartmann Two-Fluid Flow Between Two Parallel Plates, J. P. Kumar, J. C. Umavathi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The paper presents an analytical solution for the dispersion of a solute in a conducting immiscible fluid flowing between two parallel plates in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. The fluids in both the regions are incompressible, electrically conducting and the transport properties are assumed to be constant. The channel walls are assumed to be electrically insulating. Separate solutions for each fluid are obtained and these solutions are matched at the interface using suitable matching conditions. The results are tabulated for various values of viscosity ratio, pressure gradient and Hartman number on the effective Taylor dispersion coefficient and volumetric …

The Underlying Physiology Of Arterial Pulse Wave Morphology In Spatial Domain, Nzerem F. Egenti, Alozie H. Nkechi Dec 2013

The Underlying Physiology Of Arterial Pulse Wave Morphology In Spatial Domain, Nzerem F. Egenti, Alozie H. Nkechi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Cardio-vascular events are among the world’s leading causes of morbidity and mortality. Most postulates suppose that culinary delights can be implicated in incidences of cardio-vascular diseases. This school of thought holds well in many respects. Much as the truistic value of the said school is acknowledged, we conceived of physiological disposition as an endogenous dominant factor in the events being considered, whereas culinary measures constitute an exogenous contributory factor. In this work we aimed at studying the effects of distance (stature) on pulse waveforms. Certain elements of our study showed that pulse wavelength was dominant in prescribing cardio-vascular physiology.

A More General Diffusion Model For Lightning Radiative Transfer, Elliott Paul Saint-Pierre Dec 2013

A More General Diffusion Model For Lightning Radiative Transfer, Elliott Paul Saint-Pierre

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

A more general diffusion model for lightning radiative transfer is presented. The development is based on the work published by Koshak et al (J. Geo. Phys. Res., vol. 99, (D7), 14361-371, (1994). In this thesis, the diffusion coefficient is allowed to vary as a function of the radial component of the cloud and cylindrical geometry is used. Different approximations in the analysis of the resulting radial equation are provided. The method of Frobenius permits the obtention of a complete solution. Possibilities and means for further development of this research are included.

Generalized Finite-Difference Time-Domain Schemes For Solving Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations, Frederick Ira Moxley Iii Jul 2013

Generalized Finite-Difference Time-Domain Schemes For Solving Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations, Frederick Ira Moxley Iii

Doctoral Dissertations

The nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) is one of the most widely applicable equations in physical science, and characterizes nonlinear dispersive waves, optics, water waves, and the dynamics of molecules. The NLSE satisfies many mathematical conservation laws. Moreover, due to the nonlinearity, the NLSE often requires a numerical solution, which also satisfies the conservation laws. Some of the more popular numerical methods for solving the NLSE include the finite difference, finite element, and spectral methods such as the pseudospectral, split-step with Fourier transform, and integrating factor coupled with a Fourier transform. With regard to the finite difference and finite element methods, …

Boundary Stabilization Of Torsional Vibrations Of A Solar Panel, Prasanta K. Nandi, Ganesh C. Gorain, Samarjit Kar Jun 2012

Boundary Stabilization Of Torsional Vibrations Of A Solar Panel, Prasanta K. Nandi, Ganesh C. Gorain, Samarjit Kar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we study a boundary stabilization of the torsional vibrations of a solar panel. The panel is held by a rigid hub at one end and is totally free at the other. The dynamics of the overall system leads to hybrid system of equations. It is set to a certain initial vibrations with a control torque as a stabilizer at the hub end only. Taking a non-linear damping as boundary stabilizer, a uniform exponential energy decay rate is obtained directly. Thus an explicit form of uniform stabilization of the system is achieved by means of the exponential energy …

New Explicit Solutions For Homogeneous Kdv Equations Of Third Order By Trigonometric And Hyperbolic Function Methods, Marwan Alquran, Roba Al-Omary, Qutaibeh Katatbeh

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we study two-component evolutionary systems of the homogeneous KdV equation of the third order types (I) and (II). Trigonometric and hyperbolic function methods such as the sine-cosine method, the rational sine-cosine method, the rational sinh-cosh method, sech-csch method and rational tanh-coth method are used for analytical treatment of these systems. These methods, have the advantage of reducing the nonlinear problem to a system of algebraic equations that can be solved by computerized packages.

Mhd Mixed Convective Flow Of Viscoelastic And Viscous Fluids In A Vertical Porous Channel, R. Sivaraj, B. R. Kumar, J. Prakash

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we analyze the problem of steady, mixed convective, laminar flow of two incompressible, electrically conducting and heat absorbing immiscible fluids in a vertical porous channel filled with viscoelastic fluid in one region and viscous fluid in the other region. A uniform magnetic field is applied in the transverse direction, the fluids rise in the channel driven by thermal buoyancy forces associated with thermal radiation. The equations are modeled using the fully developed flow conditions. An exact solution is obtained for the velocity, temperature, skin friction and Nusselt number distributions. The physical interpretation to these expressions is examined …

The Singular Perturbation In The Analysis Of Mode I Fracture Based Upon A New Multiscale Theory, Kai-Bin Fu Dec 2011

The Singular Perturbation In The Analysis Of Mode I Fracture Based Upon A New Multiscale Theory, Kai-Bin Fu

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A theory of fracture is presented that is based upon an extension of continuum mechanics to the nanoscale fracture through the incorporation of long-range intermolecular forces which correct bulk material descriptions near interfaces. To be consistent with the literature, constant surface energies are assigned to interfaces. In the analysis of mode I fracture for quasi-brittle material, it is observed that the incorporation of these long-range intermolecular forces predicts sharp fracture tip rather than blunt and avoids stress singularity. The details of the singular perturbation employed in this analysis are also presented.

Paleomagnetism And Investigation Of 40 Ma Lavas, Liverpool Range, New South Whales, Australia, Nathan M. Padilla

Physics

The main focus of this project is the continued study of a reversal of the earth’s magnetic field recorded from lavas in the Liverpool Range of New South Whales, Australia. This reverse-to-normal transition, recently dated at ~40 Ma, was first reported in Nature in 1986. [2] In March 2011 some 200+ cores were drilled from several sections about the volcanic range—Jemmy’s Creek, Bald Hill, Rock Creek, Yarraman, and Coolah Tops Road. Here we focus on paleomagnetic findings from samples drilled from the most extensive section, that being along the trail near Jemmy’s Creek. Results from alternating field demagnetization show the …

Multidimensional Inverse Boundary Value Problem For A System Of Hyperbolic Equations, M. A. Guliev, E. M. El-Hadidi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In the paper we investigate the solvability of the inverse multidimensional boundary value problem for the system of hyperbolic type equations. A method is proposed to reduce the considered problem to some non infinite system of differential equations. The proposed method allows one to prove the existence and uniqueness theorems for the multidimensional inverse boundary value problems in the class of the functions with bounded smoothness.

Finite Element Analysis In Porous Media For Incompressible Flow Of Contamination From Nuclear Waste, Abbas Al-Bayati, Saad A. Manaa, Ekhlass S. Ahmed

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A non-linear parabolic system is used to describe incompressible nuclear waste disposal contamination in porous media, in which both molecular diffusion and dispersion are considered. The Galerkin method is applied for the pressure equation. For the brine, radionuclide and heat, a kind of partial upwind finite element scheme is constructed. Examples are included to demonstrate certain aspects of the theory and illustrate the capabilities of the kind of partial upwind finite element approach.

Solutions Of Nonlinear Second Order Multi-Point Boundary Value Problems By Homotopy Perturbation Method, S. Das, Sunil Kumar, O. P. Singh

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we present an algorithm for the numerical solution of the second order multi- point boundary value problem with suitable multi boundary conditions. The algorithm is based on the homotopy perturbation approach and the solutions are calculated in the form of a rapid convergent series. It is observed that the method gives more realistic series solutions that converge very rapidly in physical problems. Illustrative numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the efficiency and simplicity of the proposed method in solving this type of multipoint boundary value problems.

On The Accuracy Of Explicit Finite-Volume Schemes For Fluctuating Hydrodynamics, Aleksandar Donev, Eric Vanden-Eijnden, Alejandro Garcia, John B. Bell Jan 2010

On The Accuracy Of Explicit Finite-Volume Schemes For Fluctuating Hydrodynamics, Aleksandar Donev, Eric Vanden-Eijnden, Alejandro Garcia, John B. Bell

Faculty Publications

This paper describes the development and analysis of finite-volume methods for the Landau–Lifshitz Navier–Stokes (LLNS) equations and related stochastic partial differential equations in fluid dynamics. The LLNS equations incorporate thermal fluctuations into macroscopic hydrodynamics by the addition of white noise fluxes whose magnitudes are set by a fluctuation-dissipation relation. Originally derived for equilibrium fluctuations, the LLNS equations have also been shown to be accurate for nonequilibrium systems. Previous studies of numerical methods for the LLNS equations focused primarily on measuring variances and correlations computed at equilibrium and for selected nonequilibrium flows. In this paper, we introduce a more systematic approach …

Estimating Hydrodynamic Quantities In The Presence Of Microscopic Fluctuations, Alejandro Garcia Jan 2006

Estimating Hydrodynamic Quantities In The Presence Of Microscopic Fluctuations, Alejandro Garcia

Faculty Publications

This paper discusses the evaluation of hydrodynamic variables in the presence of spontaneous fluctuations, such as in molecular simulations of fluid flows. The principal point is that hydrodynamic variables such as fluid velocity and temperature must be defined in terms of mechanical variables such as momentum and energy density). Because these relations are nonlinear and because fluctuations of mechanical variables are correlated, care must be taken to avoid introducing a bias when evaluating means, variances, and correlations of hydrodynamic variables. The unbiased estimates are formulated; some alternative, incorrect approaches are presented as cautionary warnings. The expressions are verified by numerical …

Reconstruction Of An Unknown Boundary Portion From Cauchy Data In N- Dimensions, Kurt Bryan, Lester Caudill Feb 2005

Reconstruction Of An Unknown Boundary Portion From Cauchy Data In N- Dimensions, Kurt Bryan, Lester Caudill

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We consider the inverse problem of determining the shape of some inaccessible portion of the boundary of a region in n dimensions from Cauchy data for the heat equation on an accessible portion of the boundary. The inverse problem is quite ill-posed, and nonlinear. We develop a Newton-like algorithm for solving the problem, with a simple and efficient means for computing the required derivatives, develop methods for regularizing the process, and provide computational examples.
