Optical Nonlinearity Of A Cold Atomic Ensemble Driven By A Strong Coherent Field In A Saturation Regime, A. S. Usoltsev, L. V. Gerasimov, A. D. Manukhova, S. P. Kulik, D. V. Kupriyanov

Physics Faculty Publications

We present a microscopic analysis and evaluation of the dielectric susceptibility of a dielectric medium consisting of vector-type two-energy-level atoms, responding to a weak probe mode, when the atoms are driven by a strong coherent field. Each atom, in an environment of others, exists as a quasiparticle, further structuring the bulk medium. In a limit of dilute atomic gas, the dynamics of each atom follows the Mollow-type nonlinear excitation regime, and the medium susceptibility collectivizes the individual atomic responses to the probe mode. We outline how the collective dynamics can be interpolated up to a dense medium, and we argue …

Tunable Optical Beam Focusing Using Static Water Droplets On An Electrospun Polymer Fiber, Marco Laurence M. Budlayan, Dina C. Palangyos, Jonathan N. Patricio, Susan D. Arco, Raphael A. Guerrero May 2025

Tunable Optical Beam Focusing Using Static Water Droplets On An Electrospun Polymer Fiber, Marco Laurence M. Budlayan, Dina C. Palangyos, Jonathan N. Patricio, Susan D. Arco, Raphael A. Guerrero

Physics Faculty Publications

This work explores the use of static water microdroplets on a microfiber to vary the width of an optical beam. Varying the water droplet volume changes the beam width without replacing any optical components. A surface derived from glass deposited with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microfibers via electrospinning was used to sustain the droplet shape on the surface. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the presence of randomly intertwined microfibers with diameters of less than 3 µm which afforded the surface a hydrophobic property. A decrease in the optical transmittance of the films and an increase in the water contact angle were also …

Two-Photon Absorption And Fluorescence Of Cadmium Sulfide, Jacob Goranson, Gregory J. Taft Feb 2024

Two-Photon Absorption And Fluorescence Of Cadmium Sulfide, Jacob Goranson, Gregory J. Taft

Physics Faculty Publications

The two-photon absorption and fluorescence of bulk cadmium sulfide were studied using 50-fs, 800-nm pulses from an unamplified Ti:sapphire laser. The fluorescence spectrum was measured to have a main peak at 522 nm, and the power of the fluorescence was shown to vary quadratically with the 800-nm beam power. This supports the theory that the fluorescence is excited by two-photon absorption and confirms previous work done with longer duration, higher energy excitation pulses. Pump-probe measurements provided additional confirmation of the two-photon absorption. Measured spectral broadening of the wings of the laser spectrum also was observed, which likely is due to …

Measurement Of Ascorbic Acid Samples' Optical Rotation Via An Improvised Polarimeter For Purity Assessment, Ryan Felicidario, Ramon M. Delos Santos

Physics Faculty Publications

The polarization of light finds practical application in physics and chemistry through the optical activity phenomenon, where polarimeters play a crucial role. This research builds on the improvised polarimeter designed by Kvittingen and Sjursnes, implemented with relevant modifications, to measure optical rotations of over-the-counter ascorbic acid samples. The study aims to assess the purity of two brands of ascorbic acid through polarimetry, comparing the calculated specific rotation with the literature values and supplementing the characterization with melting point determination. The constructed polarimeter, assembled using Lego bricks, provides an affordable alternative for educational purposes, addressing the challenges observed in the accessibility …

Estimation Of Methyl Orange Dye's Molar Absorptivity Using A Photoresistor-Based Photometer, Patricia M. Ludovice, Ramon M. Delos Santos

Physics Faculty Publications

The need to further develop solar cell technology, particularly on dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), drives absorption studies of various chemical species. In this study, absorbance analysis of methyl orange (MO) dye was performed using the adapted and modified photoresistor-based photometer of Adams-McNichol et al. [1]. The research aims to improve the stability of the reference setup, while maintaining the accuracy of absorbance results it yields. The methodology includes photometer fabrication, MO dye sample preparation, and the evaluation of MO dye's molar absorptivity in an aqueous solution. Results show that the estimated molar absorptivity of MO using the voltage readings from …

Concept Connectivity: An Educational And Research Framework For Scientific Learning In Optics, Photonics, And Electronic Education, Benjamin Dingel, John Gabriel C. Rivera, Francesca De Guzman Palabrica, Clint Dominic Bennett

Physics Faculty Publications

We present a novel framework referred to as Concept Connectivity that aids in educating and engaging students by presenting the topic of the Special Theory of Relativity (STR) in a coherent and unified manner. It uses different analogue implementations of the STR coming from seemingly distinct fields of study such as (i) Optics, (ii) Photonics, and (iii) Electronics to connect not only to the concepts of the STR but to the various concepts from these different fields. In these analogue implementations, the fundamental characteristics of the different STR phenomena can be mimicked in many different ways. Concept Connectivity has two …

The feasibility of a 220 - 330 GHz zero order axicon generated Bessel beam for corneal water content was explored. Simulation and experimental data from the 25-degree cone angle hyperbolic-axicon lens illuminating metallic spherical targets demonstrate a monotonically decreasing, band integrated, backscatter intensity for increasing radius of curvature from 7 - 11 mm, when lens reflector and optical axis are aligned. Further, for radii >= 9.5 mm, maximum signal was obtained with a 1 mm transverse displacement between lens and reflector optical axes arising from spatial correlation between main lobe and out of phase side lobes. Thickness and permittivity parameter …

Laser Irradiation Of Mung Bean (Vigna Radiata L.) At Two Wavelengths For Enhanced Seedling Development, Rayno Vic B. Janayon, Raphael A. Guerrero

Physics Faculty Publications

Two laser sources operating at wavelengths of 632.8 nm (He-Ne) and 488 nm (Ar+

) are used in examining the effects of coherent, low-power, continuous wave exposure on the development of Vigna radiata L. Presowing laser irradiation of seeds leads to an improvement of mung bean seedling characteristics, with increased values of hypocotyl length (an increase of up to 22.5%), root length (an increase of up to 28.8%), and seedling mass (a maximum increase of 29.2%). Measured parameters between seedlings from laser-irradiated seeds and from control samples are statistically different at a level of significance equal to 0.05. For both …

Spectroscopy Of Neon For The Advanced Undergraduate Laboratory, H. C. Busch, M. B. Cooper, C. I. Sukenik Jan 2019

Spectroscopy Of Neon For The Advanced Undergraduate Laboratory, H. C. Busch, M. B. Cooper, C. I. Sukenik

Physics Faculty Publications

We describe a spectroscopy experiment, suitable for upper-division laboratory courses, that investigates saturated absorption spectroscopy and polarization spectroscopy in a neon discharge. Both experiments use nearly identical components, allowing students to explore both techniques in a single apparatus. Furthermore, because the wavelength of the laser is in the visible part of the spectrum (640 nm), the experiment is well-suited for students with limited experience in optical alignment. The labs nicely complement a course in atomic or plasma physics, provide students with the opportunity to gain important technical skills in the area of optics and lasers, and can provide an introduction …

Transient Transmission Oscillations In Doped And Undoped Lithium Niobate Induced By Near-Infrared Femtosecond Pulses, Bryan J. Crossman, Gregory J. Taft Dec 2018

Transient Transmission Oscillations In Doped And Undoped Lithium Niobate Induced By Near-Infrared Femtosecond Pulses, Bryan J. Crossman, Gregory J. Taft

Physics Faculty Publications

Transient transmission oscillations in X-cut and Z-cut congruent, iron-doped, and magnesium-doped lithium niobate samples were measured using 50 fs, 800 nm, 0.5 nJ pulses from a self-mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser in an optical pump–probe system. Several Raman-active oscillation modes excited by these pulses were observed as changes in the transmitted probe intensity versus time delay between the pump and probe pulses. The samples were rotated to determine how the incident polarization of the pump pulses affects the mode excitations. The observed Raman-active oscillations correspond to previously reported symmetry modes measured with traditional, continuous-wave, Raman spectroscopy using the same scattering …

Catalysis Of Stark-Tuned Interactions Between Ultracold Rydberg Atoms, A. L. Win, W. D. Williams, T. J. Carroll, C. I. Sukenik Sep 2018

Catalysis Of Stark-Tuned Interactions Between Ultracold Rydberg Atoms, A. L. Win, W. D. Williams, T. J. Carroll, C. I. Sukenik

Physics Faculty Publications

We have experimentally investigated a catalysis effect in the resonant energy transfer between ultracold 85Rb Rydberg atoms. We studied the time dependence of the process, 34p + 34p → 34s + 35s, and observed an enhancement of 34s state population when 34d state atoms are added. We have also performed numerical model simulations, which are in qualitative agreement with experiment and indicate that the enhancement arises from a redistribution of p-state atoms due to the presence of the d-state atoms.

Compensation Of Non-Linear Bandwidth Broadening By Laser Chirping In Thomson Sources, C. Maroli, V. Petrillo, I. Drebot, L, Serafini, B. Terzić, G. A. Krafft Aug 2018

Compensation Of Non-Linear Bandwidth Broadening By Laser Chirping In Thomson Sources, C. Maroli, V. Petrillo, I. Drebot, L, Serafini, B. Terzić, G. A. Krafft

Physics Faculty Publications

A new laser chirping prescription is derived by means of the phase-stationary method for an inci- dent Gaussian laser pulse in conjunction with a Li enard-Wiechert calculation of the scattered radia- tion flux and spectral brilliance. This particularly efficient laser chirp has been obtained using the electric field of the laser and for electrons and radiation on axis. The frequency modulation is some- what reduced with respect to that proposed in the previous literature, allowing the application of this procedure to lasers with larger values of the parameter a0. Numerical calculations have been performed using mildly focused and …

Light Scattering From An Atomic Gas Under Conditions Of Quantum Degeneracy, V. M. Porozova, L. V. Gerasimov, M. D. Havey Jan 2018

Light Scattering From An Atomic Gas Under Conditions Of Quantum Degeneracy, V. M. Porozova, L. V. Gerasimov, M. D. Havey

Physics Faculty Publications

Elastic light scattering from a macroscopic atomic sample existing in the Bose-Einstein condensate phase reveals a unique physical configuration of interacting light and matter waves. However, the joint coherent dynamics of the optical excitation induced by an incident photon is influenced by the presence of incoherent scattering channels. For a sample of sufficient length the excitation transports as a polariton wave and the propagation Green's function obeys the scattering equation which we derive. The polariton dynamics could be tracked in the outgoing channel of the scattered photon as we show via numerical solution of the scattering equation for one-dimensional geometry. …

Review Of Optical Detection Of Single Molecules Beyond The Diffraction And Diffusion Limit Using Plasmonic Nanostructures, Farzia Karim, Todd B. Smith, Chenglong Zhao

Physics Faculty Publications

Single-molecule detection has become a unique and indispensable tool for the study of molecular motions and interactions at the single-molecule level. Unlike ensemble measurement where the information is averaged, single-molecule analysis yields invaluable information on both the individual molecular properties and their microenvironment. Among the various technologies for the detection of single molecules, the detection with optical methods has many advantages in terms of its high sensitivity, electrical passiveness, and robustness. The recent advances in the engineering of either the excitation light or the solution of the molecules have paved the way for enhanced single-molecule detection. We present recent developments …

Practical Guide To The Realization Of A Convertible Optical Trapping System, Chenglong Zhao Feb 2017

Practical Guide To The Realization Of A Convertible Optical Trapping System, Chenglong Zhao

Physics Faculty Publications

In this article, we provide a detailed guide to the construction of a convertible optical trapping system for either single-beam or counter-propagating trap. The single-beam trap maintains all the functionalities that a conventional optical tweezer has. While the counter-propagating trap allows for the trapping of particles that single-beam trap cannot handle. The counter-propagating trap can be easily switched to a single-beam trap, and vice versa. Therefore, this convertible optical trapping system allows for the trapping and manipulation of particles with a wide variety of sizes and materials.

Delos Santos, Shinpei Ozawa, Valynn Magusara, Syougo Azuma, Anthony Tuico, Vernalyn Copa, Arnel Salvador, Kohji Yamamoto, Armando Somintac, Kazuyoshi Kurihara, Hideaki Kitahara, Masahiko Tani, Elmer Estacio

Physics Faculty Publications

Terahertz (THz) wave detection and emission via Cherenkov-phase-matched nonlinear optical effects at 1.55-μm optical wavelength were demonstrated using a GaAs with metal-coating (M-G-M) and bare GaAs as a reference sample in conjunction with a metallic tapered parallel-plate waveguide (TPPWG). The metal-coated GaAs is superior to the bare wafer both as a THz electro-optic detector and as an emitter. Significant improvements in the detection and emission efficiency were obtained by utilizing a metal-coating due to better confinement and lower loss of the THz waves propagating in the M-G-M compared with bare GaAs.

Mid-Infrared Optical Frequency Combs Based On Difference Frequency Generation For Molecular Spectroscopy, Flavio C. Cruz, Daniel L. Maser, Todd Johnson, Gabriel Ycas, Andrew Klose, Fabrizio R. Giorgetta, Ian Coddington, Scott A. Diddams

Physics Faculty Publications

Mid-infrared femtosecond optical frequency combs were produced by difference frequency generation of the spectral components of a near-infrared comb in a 3-mm-long MgO:PPLN crystal. We observe strong pump depletion and 9.3 dB parametric gain in the 1.5 μm signal, which yields powers above 500 mW (3 μW/mode) in the idler with spectra covering 2.8 μm to 3.5 μm. Potential for broadband, high-resolution molecular spectroscopy is demonstrated by absorption spectra and interferograms obtained by heterodyning two combs.

Analyzing Major Challenges Of Wind And Solar Variability In Power Systems, Falko Ueckerdt, Robert Brecha, Gunnar Luderer Sep 2015

Analyzing Major Challenges Of Wind And Solar Variability In Power Systems, Falko Ueckerdt, Robert Brecha, Gunnar Luderer

Physics Faculty Publications

Ambitious policy targets together with current and projected high growth rates indicate that future power systems will likely show substantially increased generation from renewable energy sources. A large share will come from the variable renewable energy (VRE) sources wind and solar photovoltaics (PV); however, integrating wind and solar causes challenges for existing power systems. In this paper we analyze three major integration challenges related to the structural matching of demand with the supply of wind and solar power: low capacity credit, reduced utilization of dispatchable plants, and over-produced generation. Based on residual load duration curves we define corresponding challenge variables …

Sustainability Research Through The Lens Of Environmental Ethics, Daniel Clifford Fouke, Sukh Sidhu, Robert J. Brecha Oct 2014

Sustainability Research Through The Lens Of Environmental Ethics, Daniel Clifford Fouke, Sukh Sidhu, Robert J. Brecha

Physics Faculty Publications

Two core courses in the curriculum of the University of Dayton’s Sustainability, Energy, and the Environment minor, Sustainability Research I and II, were developed out of the frustration one author, Daniel Fouke, experienced while teaching a traditional course on environmental ethics for the Department of Philosophy. The often-overwhelming nature of environmental problems tended to demoralize both the instructor and the students. Seeking a way to integrate ethical analysis of complex problems with the search for solutions, two courses were proposed that would be team-taught by a philosopher and a scientist or an engineer.

Development of the courses was initially funded …

A series of experiments were conducted in vivo using Yucatan miniature pigs (Sus scrofa domestica) to determine thermal damage thresholds to the skin from 1319-nm continuous-wave Nd:YAG laser irradiation. Experiments employed exposure durations of 0.25, 1.0, 2.5, and 10 s and beam diameters of ∼0.6 and 1 cm. Thermal imagery data provided a time-dependent surface temperature response from the laser. A damage endpoint of fifty percent probability of a minimally visible effect was used to determine threshold for damage at 1 and 24 h postexposure. Predicted thermal response and damage thresholds are compared with a numerical model of opticalthermal interaction. …

Global Fossil Energy Markets And Climate Change Mitigation: An Analysis With Remind, Nico Bauer, Ioanna Mouratiadou, Gunnar Luderer, Lavinia Baumstark, Robert J. Brecha, Ottmar Edenhofer, Elmar Kriegler Oct 2013

Global Fossil Energy Markets And Climate Change Mitigation: An Analysis With Remind, Nico Bauer, Ioanna Mouratiadou, Gunnar Luderer, Lavinia Baumstark, Robert J. Brecha, Ottmar Edenhofer, Elmar Kriegler

Physics Faculty Publications

We analyze the dynamics of global fossil resource markets under different assumptions for the supply of fossil fuel resources, development pathways for energy demand, and climate policy settings. Resource markets, in particular the oil market, are characterized by a large discrepancy between costs of resource extraction and commodity prices on international markets. We explain this observation in terms of (a) the intertemporal scarcity rent, (b) regional price differentials arising from trade and transport costs, (c) heterogeneity and inertia in the extraction sector. These effects are captured by the REMIND model. We use the model to explore economic effects of changes …

The Carbon Rent Economics Of Climate Policy, Matthias Kalkuhl, Robert J. Brecha Sep 2013

The Carbon Rent Economics Of Climate Policy, Matthias Kalkuhl, Robert J. Brecha

Physics Faculty Publications

By reducing the demand for fossil fuels, climate policy can reduce scarcity rents for fossil resource owners. As mitigation policies ultimately aim to limit emissions, a new scarcity for “space” in the atmosphere to deposit emissions is created. The associated scarcity rent, or climate rent (that is, for example, directly visible in permit prices under an emission trading scheme) can be higher or lower than the original fossil resource rent. In this paper, we analyze analytically and numerically the impact of mitigation targets, resource availability, backstop costs, discount rates and demand parameters on fossil resource rents and the climate rent. …

Development Without Energy? Assessing Future Scenarios Of Energy Consumption In Developing Countries, Jan Christof Steckel, Robert J. Brecha, Michael Jakob, Jessica Strefler, Gunnar Luderer Jun 2013

Development Without Energy? Assessing Future Scenarios Of Energy Consumption In Developing Countries, Jan Christof Steckel, Robert J. Brecha, Michael Jakob, Jessica Strefler, Gunnar Luderer

Physics Faculty Publications

We analyze the relationship between economic development and energy consumption in the context of greenhouse gas mitigation. The main contribution of this work is to compare estimates of energy thresholds in the form of minimum energy requirements to reach high levels of development with output projections of per capita final energy supply from a group of integrated assessment models (IAMs). Scenarios project that reductions of carbon emissions in developing countries will be achieved not only by means of decreasing the carbon intensity, but also by making a significant break with the historically observed relationship between energy use and economic growth. …

Logistic Curves, Extraction Costs And Peak Oil, Robert J. Brecha Dec 2012

Logistic Curves, Extraction Costs And Peak Oil, Robert J. Brecha

Physics Faculty Publications

Debates about the possibility of a near-term maximum in world oil production have become increasingly prominent over the past decade, with the focus often being on the quantification of geologically available and technologically recoverable amounts of oil in the ground. Economically, the important parameter is not a physical limit to resources in the ground, but whether market price signals and costs of extraction will indicate the efficiency of extracting conventional or nonconventional resources as opposed to making substitutions over time for other fuels and technologies. We present a hybrid approach to the peak-oil question with two models in which the …

Mid-Infrared Upconversion Spectroscopy Based On A Yb:Fiber Femtosecond Laser, Todd Johnson, Scott A. Diddams Apr 2012

Mid-Infrared Upconversion Spectroscopy Based On A Yb:Fiber Femtosecond Laser, Todd Johnson, Scott A. Diddams

Physics Faculty Publications

We present a system for molecular spectroscopy using a broadband mid-infrared laser with near-infrared detection. Difference frequency generation of a Yb:fiber femtosecond laser produced a mid-infrared (MIR) source tunable from 2100–3700 cm-1 (2.7–4.7 μm) with average power up to 40 mW. The MIR spectrum was upconverted to near-infrared wavelengths for broadband detection using a two-dimensional dispersion imaging technique. Absorption measurements were performed over bandwidths of 240 cm-1 (7.2 THz) with 0.048 cm-1 (1.4 GHz) resolution, and absolute frequency scale uncertainty was better than 0.005 cm-1 (150 MHz). The minimum detectable absorption coefficient per spectral element was …

Practicality Of Compensating The Loss In The Plasmonic Waveguides Using Semiconductor Gain Medium, Jacob B. Khurgin, Greg Sun Jan 2012

Practicality Of Compensating The Loss In The Plasmonic Waveguides Using Semiconductor Gain Medium, Jacob B. Khurgin, Greg Sun

Physics Faculty Publications

We consider the issue of compensating the loss in plasmonic waveguides with semiconductor gain material and show that, independent of specific geometry, full loss compensation in plasmonic waveguides with significantly sub-wavelength light confinement (less than λ/4n) requires current density well in excess of 100 kA/cm2. This high current density is attributed to the unavoidable shortening of recombination time caused by the Purcell effect inherent to sub-wavelength confinement. Consequently, an injection-pumped plasmonic laser that is truly sub-wavelength in all three dimensions (“spaser”) would have threshold current densities that are hard to obtain in any conceivable semiconductor device.
