We propose to develop advanced ML models, such as physics informed neural network (PINN) based surrogate models, to accurately represent accelerator phase space transport. These surrogate models will enable precise diagnosis and prediction of beam phase space evolution along the beamline, facilitating real-time control and optimization. The developed models will be tested using the Upgraded Injector Test Facility (UITF) at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab), providing a pathway toward ML-driven enhanced diagnostics and beamline control in operational accelerator environments. The primary aim will be to facilitate this by developing machine learning models that outperform traditional simulations in speed and …

At Jefferson Lab, the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator (CEBAF) features a unique design with two linear accelerators and two arc sections allowing for multiple turns of the electron beam, as well as four experimental end stations. This topology leads to increased beam losses, especially in the spreader and recombiner regions connecting the arcs to the LINACs and in the extraction regions connecting the experimental end stations to the accelerator. These losses result in equipment activation and operational interruptions. Recent upgrades to the facility’s diagnostic systems, including the addition of xenon ion chambers, have provided higher-resolution data regarding these loss events. …

The Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) operates hundreds of superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities in its two linear accelerators (linacs). Field emission (FE) is an ongoing operational challenge in higher gradient SRF cavities. FE generates high levels of neutron and gamma radiation leading to damaged accelerator hardware and a radiation hazard environment. During machine development periods, we performed invasive gradient scans to record data capturing the relationship between cavity gradients and radiation levels measured throughout the linacs. However, the field emission environment at CEBAF varies considerably over time as the configuration of the radio-frequency (RF) gradients changes or due …

In this study, we reassess the dynamics within a simple accelerator lattice featuring a single degree of freedom and incorporating a sextupole magnet. In the initial segment, we revisit the Hénon quadratic map, a representation of a general transformation with quadratic nonlinearity. In the subsequent section, we unveil that a conventional sextupole is essentially a composite structure, comprising an integrable McMillan sextupole and octupole, along with non-integrable corrections of higher orders. This fresh perspective sheds light on the fundamental nature of the sextupole magnet, providing a more nuanced understanding of its far-from-trivial chaotic dynamics. Importantly, it enables the description of …

Conduction-cooled SRF niobium cavities are being developed for use in compact, continuous-wave electron linear accelerators for a variety of industrial applications. A 915 MHz two-cell cavity has been designed to achieve an energy gain of 3.5 MeV. The design of the cell shape aims at minimizing the peak surface magnetic field. Field flatness is achieved by adjusting the length of the outer end half-cells. The higher-order mode analysis shows that absorbers are not required for a moderate beam current of 5 mA. One of the beam tubes has two side-ports for insertion of coaxial fundamental power couplers. The mechanical design …

Investigation Of Hot-Spots Due To Trapped Flux In Niobium Superconducting Radiofrequency Cavities, B. Khanal, P. Dhakal
Physics Faculty Publications
One of the significant sources of residual losses in superconducting radio-frequency cavities is magnetic flux trapped during the cool-down due to the incomplete Messier effect. If the trapped vortices are non-uniformly distributed on the cavity surface, the temperature mapping revealed the “hot-spots” at the location of high density of pinned vortices. Here, we performed a rf test on 1.3 GHz single cell cavity with the combination of the temperature mapping system. The temperature mapping reveled the development of the hot spots with the increase in rf field inside the cavity. When magnetic field is trapped locally on the surface of …

As design and simulation studies for the energy upgrade at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility progress, both static and dynamic errors must be addressed. The current upgrade design introduces a pair of Fixed-Field Alternating-Gradient (FFA) recirculating arcs: one in the East recirculating arc, and one in the West. In the present design, each FFA arc supports six concurrent beam energies in the same beam pipe; these must be concurrently corrected for both static and dynamic errors. This document discusses the present beam correction strategies applied in simulation.
Manufacturing And Testing The Permanent Magnet Linear Motor, Renjie Kang
Manufacturing And Testing The Permanent Magnet Linear Motor, Renjie Kang
Senior Theses
Controlled mechanical motion is vital in many useful applications in technology. Among them, linear motors have advantages over traditional rotating motors. In this work, we built a permanent magnet linear motor to test and measure its energy efficiency. A maximum 29% total energy efficiency, and 67% energy transfer rate, were detected. In addition, a C-shape support structure was added to the moving part in order to increase the moving accuracy. The tests show that, with the support structure, the fluctuation in the vertical direction decreases significantly, but the friction of the system slightly increases.
Where Is The Best Place To Sit On A Roller Coaster? Forces, Physics, And Fun At Disneyland, Kelsey Lubetich
Where Is The Best Place To Sit On A Roller Coaster? Forces, Physics, And Fun At Disneyland, Kelsey Lubetich
Scripps Senior Theses
The work presented in this thesis was undertaken to quantitatively determine the best place to sit on a roller coaster. Maximizing the time spent feeling weightless and the highest value of negative Z acceleration were used as criteria for the best seat. Acceleration values were measured on the California Screamin' roller coaster at Disney California Adventure Park using an iPhone and an application to record data from its accelerometers. After analyzing acceleration data, it was determined that the front row had the greatest negative acceleration in the z direction and was therefore the "best place" to sit.

Multi-spoke cavities are well-known options for acceleration of heavy and light ions. A recently developed multi-spoke cavity for β=1 presents an attractive opportunity to use this cavity type for electron accelerators. One of the main attractive features of this cavity type is its compactness for relatively low frequency. A simplified design at 500 MHz allowed building of a multi-spoke cavity and cryomodule in a 2-year time frame with confidence and development of effective manufacturing techniques. It also constitutes an important step in proving the usefulness of this kind of cavity design for new applications in the electron machines. Niowave is …
