Variable Structure Feedback Control With Application To Spacecraft With Small Thrust Propulsion Systems, Samuel J. Kitchen-Mckinley
Variable Structure Feedback Control With Application To Spacecraft With Small Thrust Propulsion Systems, Samuel J. Kitchen-Mckinley
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Small spacecrafts requiring small propulsion systems are becoming more popular for low Earth orbit. It is important for these research satellites to have accurate guidance and control systems. Small propulsion systems will also be beneficial for multiple small spacecrafts used future exploration expeditions beyond low Earth orbit. These small spacecrafts benefit from the simplicity of low thrust cold gas propulsion systems. Additionally, large spacecrafts using low thrust, high specific impulse propellants for main propulsion systems, such as ion engines, allow longer and more flexible missions, including Earth orbiting spacecraft and interplanetary spacecraft.
In order to extend the life of future …
Infrasound Propagation In Terrestrial Planetary Atmospheres, Lynsey B. Schroeder
Infrasound Propagation In Terrestrial Planetary Atmospheres, Lynsey B. Schroeder
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Acoustic waves in the infrasonic frequency range, that is below 10 Hertz, have been observed to propagate to high altitudes in Earth's atmosphere. These waves have many sources, both natural and artificial, such as seismic events, convective storm systems, and nuclear explosions. Here, we seek to better understand the characteristics of atmospheric infrasound- below 0.1 Hz in particular- so as to improve the ability to detect their presence and sources. It is well-known that ambient attributes of an atmosphere, such as temperature, density, and composition, directly affect the propagation and growth of waves, and therefore it is likely that these …
Nonlinear Control Of A Thermoacoustic System With Multiple Heat Sources And Actuators, Mikael O. Molina Sandoval
Nonlinear Control Of A Thermoacoustic System With Multiple Heat Sources And Actuators, Mikael O. Molina Sandoval
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Thermoacoustic instabilities can occur in thermal devices when unsteady heat release is coupled with pressure perturbations. This effect results in excitation of Eigen-acoustic modes of the system. These instabilities can lead to unpredictable behavior of the system. Gas-turbine combustion systems are especially prone to this phenomenon reducing their overall efficiency. Additionally, due to the nature of the combustion, the turbines end up releasing undesired amounts of harmful chemicals to the atmosphere, such as Nitrous Oxide (NOX).
A Rijke tube, representing a resonator with a mean flow and a concentrated heat source, is a convenient system to study the thermoacoustic phenomena. …
Sliding Mode Observers For Distributed Parameter Systems: Theory And Applications, Niloofar Nasiri Kamran
Sliding Mode Observers For Distributed Parameter Systems: Theory And Applications, Niloofar Nasiri Kamran
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Many processes in nature and industry can be described by partial differential equations. PDEs employ quantities such as density, temperature, velocity, etc. and their partial derivatives to model these phenomena. However, in the case of distributed parameter systems, it is not always possible to have access to the states of the systems due to technical difficulties such as lack of sensors. Therefore, there is the need for state observers to estimate the states of the system only having the output of the system available. In this research, the theory of sliding mode and variable structure systems are employed in order …
The Lunar Exosphere: Spatial And Temporal Variations Of Sodium And Potassium Emissions From November 2013 To May 2014, Dona Chathuni P. Kuruppuaratchi
The Lunar Exosphere: Spatial And Temporal Variations Of Sodium And Potassium Emissions From November 2013 To May 2014, Dona Chathuni P. Kuruppuaratchi
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
I apply high resolution spectroscopy to investigate the lunar exosphere by measuring sodium and potassium spectral line profiles to determine spatial and temporal variations in exospheric effective temperatures and velocities. Observations were made from the National Solar Observatory (MMP) at Kitt Peak, Arizona from November 2013 to May 2014, with the exception of March 2014. Data collection was centered of full moon and spanned several nights with lunar phase angle coverage ranging from 65.6° (waxing) to 78.7° (waning). Observations were concurrent with the NASA LADEE mission science and instrument testing phases. We used a dial etalon Fabry-Perot spectrometer with a …
Langmuir Probe Instrument Suite For Mesosphere Turbulence Experiment Mission, Adam Blake
Langmuir Probe Instrument Suite For Mesosphere Turbulence Experiment Mission, Adam Blake
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The Langmuir probe technique is the predominant in-situ plasma diagnostic technique, and is arguably the only measurement technique that is universally own on every sounding rocket investigation. Earth's mesosphere region (80-120 km) is a host of many dynamic phenomena such as the noctilucent clouds, breaking gravity waves, inversion layers, settlement of mesospheric smoke particles, etc. As such it is critical to have a comprehensive suite of plasma diagnostics that can unambiguously measure various plasma parameters.
This thesis deals with the development and testing of three different Langmuir probe implementations suitable for investigation of the mesosphere which are to be launched …
Incoherent Scatter Radar Observations Of Dynamic Ion Composition Changes At High Latitudes During Geomagnetic Storms, Bryan C. Wright
Incoherent Scatter Radar Observations Of Dynamic Ion Composition Changes At High Latitudes During Geomagnetic Storms, Bryan C. Wright
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Two new methods are developed for estimating F region ion composition from field-aligned incoherent scatter radar (ISR) measurements. These methods address incoherent scatter spectra temperature-mass ambiguities by self-consistently modeling ion temperature profiles as a function of electric fields and plasma interactions with the neutral atmosphere. These two new methods improve on previous, similar work developed in Zettergren et al. [2010,2011] by incorporating more accurate physical models and improving the estimation procedures. These techniques enable studies of ionospheric composition during highly disturbed conditions and are suitable for data collected with short integration times (2-10 minutes). The improved models incorporate the effects …
Ion-Cyclotron Resonance Heating Of O+ In The Topside Ionosphere And Mapping Outflows To The Magnetosphere, Anthony W. Pritchard
Ion-Cyclotron Resonance Heating Of O+ In The Topside Ionosphere And Mapping Outflows To The Magnetosphere, Anthony W. Pritchard
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
This thesis considers the heavy ion dynamics due to ion-cyclotron resonance energization processes that take place in the turbulent region of the Earth’s topside, high latitude ionosphere. We simulate the impact of this transverse heating process upon energies and velocity distribution functions of outflowing oxygen ions (O+) in the approximate altitude range of 800 km to 15,000 km. To do so most effectively, we use a single particle tracing model that precisely reproduces the small-scale wave-particle interaction of broadband extremely low frequency (BBELF) waves with the ions’ cyclotron motions, leading to the upward acceleration of ions in type-II ion outflows …
Robust And Adaptive Nonlinear Control Of Limit Cycle Oscillations In Uavs Using Synthetic Jet Actuators, Natalie Ramos Pedroza
Robust And Adaptive Nonlinear Control Of Limit Cycle Oscillations In Uavs Using Synthetic Jet Actuators, Natalie Ramos Pedroza
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Limit cycle oscillations (LCO), also known as utter, cause significant challenges in fight control of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and could potentially lead to structural damage and catastrophic failures. LCO can be described as vibrational motions in the pitching and plunging displacements of an aircraft wing. Even in low Reynolds number (low-Re) fight regimes, LCO can exceed the limiting boundary for safe UAV fight. Further, as practical considerations motivate the design of smaller, lighter weight UAVs, there is a growing need for UAV systems that do not require heavy mechanical actuators (e.g., ailerons). To address this, the use of synthetic …
Long-Range Propagation, Interaction, And Dissipation Of Small-Scale Gravity Waves In The Mesosphere And Lower Thermosphere, Christopher J. Heale
Long-Range Propagation, Interaction, And Dissipation Of Small-Scale Gravity Waves In The Mesosphere And Lower Thermosphere, Christopher J. Heale
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
A 2-D nonlinear, compressible numerical model [Snively and Pasko, 2008] is used in conjunction with ray-theory to investigate the long-range propagation, dissipation and interaction of small-scale gravity waves in the Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere (MLT) region. The research in this thesis is made up of three distinct studies which build upon each other. The first investigates the thermospheric dissipation of three gravity wave packets representing: (1) A quasi-monochromatic packet, (2) A monochromatic, steady state wave, and (3) A spectrally broad packet, as well as an initial condition specified packet. It is found that dissipation due to molecular viscosity and …
Controllability Of Open Quantum Optical Systems: Photon Fock States In A Cavity, Byron Henry Lowry
Controllability Of Open Quantum Optical Systems: Photon Fock States In A Cavity, Byron Henry Lowry
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
There has always been a significant interest in using optical systems to control quantum phenomena. A major barrier to controllability of quantum optical systems is the fact that the systems are usually innite dimensional open systems, two cases which have mostly negative controllability results. This thesis develops three new definitions of controllability and reformulates a previous controllability theorem in order to apply the theorem to the system of interest. Then, the controllability of a pumped dissipative quantum optical cavity with engineered decoherence is investigated using previously developed concepts in quantum control theory, as well as the ones developed in this …
Numerical Analysis And Theory Of Oblique Alfvenic Solitons Observed In The Interplanetary Magnetic Field, Harry Raphael Wheeler Iv
Numerical Analysis And Theory Of Oblique Alfvenic Solitons Observed In The Interplanetary Magnetic Field, Harry Raphael Wheeler Iv
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Recently, there have been reports of small magnetic pulses or bumps in the interplanetary magnetic field observed by various spacecraft. Most of these reports claim that these localized pulses or bumps are solitons. Solitons are weakly nonlinear localized waves that tend to retain their form as they propagate and can be observed in various media which exhibit nonlinear steepening and dispersive effects. This thesis expands the claim that these pulses or bumps are nonlinear oblique Alfven waves with soliton components, through the application of analytical techniques used in the inverse scattering transform in a numerical context and numerical integration of …
Robust Control Methods For Nonlinear Systems With Uncertain Dynamics And Unknown Control Direction, Chau T. Ton
Robust Control Methods For Nonlinear Systems With Uncertain Dynamics And Unknown Control Direction, Chau T. Ton
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Robust nonlinear control design strategies using sliding mode control (SMC) and integral SMC (ISMC) are developed, which are capable of achieving reliable and accurate tracking control for systems containing dynamic uncertainty, unmodeled disturbances, and actuator anomalies that result in an unknown and time-varying control direction. In order to ease readability of this dissertation, detailed explanations of the relevant mathematical tools is provided, including stability denitions, Lyapunov-based stability analysis methods, SMC and ISMC fundamentals, and other basic nonlinear control tools. The contributions of the dissertation are three novel control algorithms for three different classes of nonlinear systems: single-input multiple output (SIMO) …
Nonlinear Control For Dual Quaternion Systems, William D. Price
Nonlinear Control For Dual Quaternion Systems, William D. Price
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The motion of rigid bodies includes three degrees of freedom (DOF) for rotation, generally referred to as roll, pitch and yaw, and 3 DOF for translation, generally described as motion along the x, y and z axis, for a total of 6 DOF. Many complex mechanical systems exhibit this type of motion, with constraints, such as complex humanoid robotic systems, multiple ground vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), multiple spacecraft vehicles, and even quantum mechanical systems. These motions historically have been analyzed independently, with separate control algorithms being developed for rotation and translation. The goal of this research is to study …
Fabry-Perot Observations Of Midlatitude Neutral Winds And Atmospheric Gravity Wave Activity, Marjory Anne Katon
Fabry-Perot Observations Of Midlatitude Neutral Winds And Atmospheric Gravity Wave Activity, Marjory Anne Katon
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The mesosphere and lower thermosphere displays a wide range of dynamical phenomena resulting in a complex and variable regions. Governed primarily by fluid dynamics, the motion of the upper atmosphere is modulated by a number of atmospheric waves propagating upward from various sources in the lower atmosphere. Among these are atmospheric gravity waves which have been recognized as a major source of momentum and energy in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere as well as a major factor in the dynamic coupling between the troposphere and lower thermosphere. A Fabry-Perot interferometer possessed by the Space Physics Research Laboratory at the Embry-Riddle …
