Pressure-Induced Modifications To The Structural And Optoelectronic Properties Of 2d Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Perovskites, Jesse Ratte Sep 2022

Pressure-Induced Modifications To The Structural And Optoelectronic Properties Of 2d Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Perovskites, Jesse Ratte

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Recently, 2D hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIP) have garnered lots of research interest for their applications in optoelectronic devices, especially in solar cells. The optoelectronic properties of 2D HOIPs have yet to be optimized for these applications. High external pressure is well known to induce structural modifications to 2D HOIPs, and thus modify their optoelectronic properties. Herein, we report a study of the effects of high pressure (HP) on the structures and optoelectronic properties of cyclohexane methylamine (CMA) lead iodide (CMA2PbI4) and the structures of N,N-dimethylphenylene-p-diammonium (DPDA) lead iodide (DPDAPbI4).

High pressure measurements of CMA2PbI4 were performed using Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform …

Electronic And Local Structures Of Pt-Based Bimetallic Alloy And Core-Shell Systems, Jiatang Chen Aug 2020

Electronic And Local Structures Of Pt-Based Bimetallic Alloy And Core-Shell Systems, Jiatang Chen

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis investigates the electronic structure of Pt for catalysis applications. The importance of the Pt 5d band is discussed in terms of the bonding capability of Pt. The oxygen reduction reaction in proton exchange membrane fuel cells is chosen as the catalytic reaction model to illustrate the effect of Pt 5d states on Pt-O interaction. Pt-based bimetallic systems are introduced as a solution for the high price and limited resources of Pt. Despite lower usage of Pt, the tuning capability to optimize the Pt 5d band in bimetallic catalysts is supposed to provide superior catalytic activity. Advanced synchrotron X-ray …

Effects Of High Pressure On Photochemical Reactivity Of Organic Molecular Materials Probed By Vibrational Spectroscopy, Jiwen Guan Jul 2018

Effects Of High Pressure On Photochemical Reactivity Of Organic Molecular Materials Probed By Vibrational Spectroscopy, Jiwen Guan

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Chemical transformations of molecular materials induced by high pressure and light radiation exhibit novel and intriguing aspects that have attracted much attention in recent years. Particularly, under the two stimuli, entire transformations of molecular species can be realized in condensed phases without employing additional chemical constraints, e.g., the need of solvents, catalysts or radical initiators. This new synthetic approach in chemistry therefore satisfies increasing need for production methods with reduced environmental impacts. Motivated by these promises, my Ph. D thesis focuses on this state-of-the-art branch of high-pressure photochemistry. Specifically, high pressure is employed to create the necessary reaction conditions to …

A Molecular Simulation Study On Micelle Fragmentation And Wetting In Nano-Confined Channels, Mona Habibi Jan 2014

A Molecular Simulation Study On Micelle Fragmentation And Wetting In Nano-Confined Channels, Mona Habibi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

We performed coarse-grained molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations to study the structural and dynamical properties of surfactant micelles in equilibrium and under Poiseuille-like flow in a nano-confined geometry. We used the MARTINI force-field to model the interactions between water molecules, counter-ions, and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactants. SDS surfactant was chosen as the standard model because of its potential application in drug delivery systems. First, we focused on the self-assembly of SDS in equilibrium. To form stable spherical mi- celles, we ran simulations in the isothermal-isobaric ensemble (NPT) on a system of free SDS surfactants, counter-ions and water molecules. We studied the …

Carbon Nitride And Conjugated Polymer Composite Materials, Josh Byers Mar 2013

Carbon Nitride And Conjugated Polymer Composite Materials, Josh Byers

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The semiconductor and photovoltaic properties of carbon nitride (CNx) thin films prepared using a reactive magnetron sputtering technique were investigated both individually and as composites with the organic conjugated polymers polybithiophene (PBT) and poly(3-hextlthiophene) (P3HT). At low nitrogen content, the film structure was dominated by graphitic sp2 percolation networks, whereas at higher nitrogen contents CNx films started to demonstrate semiconductor properties, as evidenced by the occurrence of photoconductivity and the development of a space charge region. When CNx was deposited onto a PBT substrate, it was found to function as an acceptor material improving the photocurrent generation both in …

Electrohydrodynamic Enhancement Of Heat Transfer And Mass Transport In Gaseous Media, Bulk Dielectric Liquids And Dielectric Thin Liquid Films, Seyed Reza Mahmoudi May 2012

Electrohydrodynamic Enhancement Of Heat Transfer And Mass Transport In Gaseous Media, Bulk Dielectric Liquids And Dielectric Thin Liquid Films, Seyed Reza Mahmoudi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Controlling transport phenomena in liquid and gaseous media through electrostatic forces has brought new important scientific and industrial applications. Although numerous EHD applications have been explored and extensively studied so far, the fast-growing technologies, mainly in the semiconductor industry, introduce new challenges and demands. These challenges require enhancement of heat transfer and mass transport in small scales (sometimes in molecular scales) to remove highly concentrated heat fluxes from reduced size devices. Electric field induced flows, or electrohydrodynamics (EHD), have shown promise in both macro and micro-scale devices.

Several existing problems in EHD heat transfer enhancements were investigated in this thesis. …
