Doppler-Broadening Of Light Nuclei Gamma-Ray Spectra, Melinda D. Whitfield
Doppler-Broadening Of Light Nuclei Gamma-Ray Spectra, Melinda D. Whitfield
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Non-destructive methods of material interrogation are used to locate hidden explosives and thwart terrorism attempts. In one such method materials are bombarded with neutrons which react with the nuclei of the atoms within causing a de-excitation process emitting a gamma-ray. The spectrum displayed by the collection of these gamma-rays gives valuable information regarding the material’s elemental make-up. It has been hypothesized that gamma-rays from neutron-induced gamma-ray reactions on light elements with atomic numbers less than 20, including most of the gamma-rays of interest in explosives detection, are Doppler-broadened. This thesis focuses on the gamma ray spectra from the 4438 keV …

Speciation And Spectroscopy Of The Uranyl And Tetravalent Plutonium Nitrate Systems: Fundamental Studies And Applications To Used Fuel Reprocessing, Nicholas A. Smith
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This dissertation explores the use of UV-Visible spectroscopy and Time Resolved Laser Induced Fluorescence spectroscopy as near real time process monitors of uranium and plutonium concentrations in aqueous reprocessing trains. The molar absorptivities and linear ranges of these metals were investigated under total nitrate and acid concentrations similar to those found in current reprocessing systems. Concurrent to this, a new multiple wavelength monitor was derived that is capable of determining the total nitrate concentration spectroscopically. This method uses the uranium absorbance spectrum to calculate the nitrate concentration in solution. When used as part of an Advanced Safeguard suite, this technique …

We study the orbits of two interacting particles described by a fully relativistic classical mechanical Hamiltonian. We use two sets of initial conditions. In the first set (dynamics 1) the system's center of mass is at rest. In the second set (dynamics 2) the center of mass evolves with velocity V. If dynamics 1 is observed from a reference frame moving with velocity-V, the principle of relativity requires that all observables must be identical to those of dynamics 2 seen from the laboratory frame. Our numerical simulations demonstrate that kinematic Lorentz space-time transformations fail to transform particle observables between the …

Spatio-Temporal Coupling Of Random Electromagnetic Pulses Interacting With Reflecting Gratings, Min Yao, Yangjian Cai, Olga Korotkova, Qiang Lin, Zhaoying Wang
Physics Articles and Papers
Matrix optics is applied to a class of random, in time and space, electromagnetic pulsed beam-like (REMPB) radiation interacting with linear optical elements. A 66 order matrix describing transformation of a six-dimensional state vector including four spatial and two temporal positions within the field is used to derive conditions for spatio-temporal coupling. An example is included which deals with a spatio-temporal coupling in a typical REMPB on reflection from a reflecting grating. Electromagnetic nature of such interaction is explored via considering dependence of the degree of polarization of the reflected REMPB on its source and on the structure of the …

Using a simultaneous fitting technique to extract nonlinear absorption coefficients from data at two pulse widths, we measure two-photon and free-carrier absorption coefficients for Ge and GaSb at 2.05 and 2.5 µm for the first time, to our knowledge. Results agreed well with published theory. Single-shot damage thresholds were also measured at 2.5 µm and agreed well with modeled thresholds using experimentally determined parameters including nonlinear absorption coefficients and temperature dependent linear absorption. The damage threshold for a single-layer Al2O3 anti-reflective coating on Ge was 55% or 35% lower than the uncoated threshold for picosecond or nanosecond …
Two-Loop Soft Anomalous Dimensions For Single Top Quark Associated Production With A W- Or H-, Nikolaos Kidonakis
Two-Loop Soft Anomalous Dimensions For Single Top Quark Associated Production With A W- Or H-, Nikolaos Kidonakis
Faculty Articles
I present results for the two-loop soft anomalous dimensions for associated production of a single top quark with a W boson or a charged Higgs boson. The calculation uses expressions for the massive cusp anomalous dimension, which are presented in different forms, and it allows soft-gluon resummation at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) accuracy. From the NNLL resummed cross section I derive approximate NNLO cross sections for bg→tW- and bg→tH- at LHC energies of 7, 10, and 14 TeV.

Clean hydrogen production is highly desirable for future energy needs, making the understanding of molecular-level phenomena underlying photocatalytic hydrogen production both fundamentally and practically important. Water splitting on pure TiO2 is inefficient, however, adding sacrificial methanol could significantly enhance the photocatalyzed H2 production. Therefore, understanding the photochemistry of methanol on TiO2 at the molecular level could provide important insights to its photocatalytic activity. Here, we report the first clear evidence of photocatalyzed splitting of methanol on TiO2 derived from time-dependent two-photon photoemission (TD-2PPE) results in combination with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). STM tip induced molecular manipulation …

Space-Time Properties Of A Boson-Dressed Fermion For The Yukawa Model, R E. Wagner, M R. Ware, Q Su, Rainer Grobe
Faculty publications – Physics
We analyze the interaction of fermions and bosons through a one-dimensional Yukawa model. We numerically compute the energy eigenstates that represent a physical fermion, which is a superposition of bare fermionic and bosonic eigenstates of the uncoupled Hamiltonian. It turns out that even fast bare fermions require only low-momentum dressing bosons, which attach themselves to the fast fermion through quantum correlations. We compare the space-time evolution of a physical fermion with that of its bare counterpart and show the importance of using dressed observables. The time evolution of the center of mass as well as the wave packet's spatial width …

X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) at the cadmium L3 and oxygen K edges for CdO thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition method, is interpreted within the real-space multiple scattering formalism, FEFF code. The features in the experimental spectra are well reproduced by calculations for a cluster of about six and ten coordination shells around the absorber for L3 edge of Cd and K edge of O, respectively. The calculated projected electronic density of states is found to be in good agreement with unoccupied electronic states in experimental data and allows to conclude that the orbital character of the …
Time-Resolved Compton Scattering For A Model Fermion-Boson System, R E. Wagner, Rainer Grobe, Q Su
Time-Resolved Compton Scattering For A Model Fermion-Boson System, R E. Wagner, Rainer Grobe, Q Su
Faculty publications – Physics
We study the scattering of a boson with a fermion with full spatial and temporal resolution based on the one-dimensional Yukawa Hamiltonian. In quantum field theory this interaction is described by the annihilation and creation of bosons with intermediate virtual particle states. We show that this process can be modeled in the center-of-mass frame by a scattering potential, permitting us to interpret the absorption and re-emission processes in quantum mechanical terms of a characteristic force. This Compton force between the fermion and boson is repulsive for large distances and attractive for shorter spacings. We also examine the periodic dynamics of …

Vibrational Spectroscopic Study Of The 1,3,5,7-Cyclooctatetraene At High Static Pressures, Edward Romano
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene (COT) is a single-ringed hydrocarbon that has not been studied extensively under high static pressures. It was the intent of this study to reveal its high-pressure behavior through its vibrational spectra. To this end, its infrared spectra as a function of pressure were collected at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) U2A beamline, as well as its Raman spectra over pressure using a micro-Raman spectrometer.
The spectra show the typical stiffening of force constants with increasing pressure for most peaks, particularly those which would theoretically exhibit a mode-softening behavior under hypotheses of molecular planarization and aromatization. Additionally, the data …

Spectroscopic Study Of Ultracold Rubidium Atoms In An Optical Dipole Force Trap, Eman Mohammed Ahmed
Physics Theses & Dissertations
The interaction of light with atoms and molecules is of fundamental interest in many branches of science. In atomic physics, this interaction can be used to cool and spatially confine (trap) atoms. These traps can be used as the starting point for other experiments, but the dynamics of the cooling and trapping processes is itself of interest. In order to better understand the physics of trapping atoms in an optical dipole force trap, we have conducted a series of spectroscopic measurements of ultracold rubidium atoms in such a trap. The trap was created at the focus of a Nd:YAG laser …

We report current work to study transfer of population and orientation in collisions of NaK molecules with argon and potassium atoms using polarization labeling (PL) and laser- induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy. In the PL experiment, a circularly polarized pump laser excites a specific NaK A1Σ +(v 0=16, J 0 ) ← X1Σ +(v 00=0, J 0 ± 1) transition, creating an orientation (non-uniform MJ0 level distribution) in both levels. The linearly polarized probe laser is scanned over various 31Π(v, J 0±1) ← A1Σ +(v 0=16, J 0 ) transitions. The probe laser passes through a crossed linear polarizer before detection, …

We present experimental studies of the NaCs molecule that are currently underway in our laboratory. The opticaloptical double resonance method is used to obtain Doppler-free excitation spectra for several excited states. Selected data from the 53Π0 electronic state are used to obtain Rydberg-Klein-Rees (RKR) and Inverse Perturbation Approach (IPA) potential curves. We are also mapping the repulsive wall of the 1(a) 3Σ +potential using many resolved bound-free fluorescence spectra from individual ro-vibrational levels of the 53Π0 electronic state to the 1(a) 3Σ + state. Using the determined 53Π0 state potential we fit the repulsive wall of the 1(a) 3Σ + …

We present an unsupervised anomaly detection method for hyperspectral imagery (HSI) based on data characteristics inherit in HSI. A locally adaptive technique of iteratively refining the well-known RX detector (LAIRX) is developed. The technique is motivated by the need for better first- and second-order statistic estimation via avoidance of anomaly presence. Overall, experiments show favorable Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves when compared to a global anomaly detector based upon the Support Vector Data Description (SVDD) algorithm, the conventional RX detector, and decomposed versions of the LAIRX detector. Furthermore, the utilization of parallel and distributed processing allows fast processing time making …

Exponential Enhancement Of Field-Induced Pair Creation From The Bosonic Vacuum, R E. Wagner, M R. Ware, Q Su, Rainer Grobe
Faculty publications – Physics
Using numerical solutions to quantum field theory, the creation of boson-antiboson pairs from the vacuum under a very strong localized external electric field is explored. The simulations reveal that the initial linear increase of the number of particles turns into an exponential growth. This self-amplification can be understood as the result of the interaction of the previously generated particles with the creation process. While the number of particles keeps increasing, the spatial shape of the (normalized) charge density of the created particles reaches a universal form that can be related to the bound states of the supercritical potential well. We …
Design Of Electronics For A High-Energy Photon Tagger For The Gluex Experiment, Mitchell "Woody" Underwood
Design Of Electronics For A High-Energy Photon Tagger For The Gluex Experiment, Mitchell "Woody" Underwood
Honors Scholar Theses
In quantum chromodynamics (QCD), quarks and antiquarks are held together inside hadrons by the nuclear strong force, which is mediated by exchange particles known as gluons. The simplest type of hadron, the meson, consists of a single quark and a single antiquark bound by a gluonic field. The flux-tube model of QCD says that this gluonic field forms a tube of color-electric field lines between the quark and the antiquark which can under the right conditions be made to vibrate. Such mesons with excited glue are called hybrid mesons.
GlueX is a high-energy nuclear physics experiment which will study hybrid …

Student Works (2010-2019)
The advantages of MRAM are so overwhelming which acts as motivation for scientist in further investigation for better read and write operation. The types of materials used are closely related to the cell performance in forming the ferromagnetic layers. Thus, the vibrational frequencies of the MRAM materials are of interest. Clusters for the two types of combinations, FexNiy and FexCoyBz are built. Subsequently, vibrational frequencies of each cluster are calculated theoretically from the first principles. The secular determinant is large when the number of electrons in a cluster is large. For the simplest combination of Fe-Ni cluster, (atomic number of an …

Partial Phonon Density Of States Of 57-Iron And 161-Dysprosium In Dyfe3 By Nuclear Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering Under High Pressure, Elizabeth Anne Tanis
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The dual partial phonon density of states (DOS) from two different Mossbauer isotopes (161Dy and 57Fe) in the same material (DyFe3) was successfully measured using the nuclear resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NRIXS) technique at high pressure. Nuclear inelastic scattering measurements yield an in-depth understanding of the element-specific dynamic properties. The Debye temperatures , the Lamb-Mossbauer factor, and the vibrational contributions to the Helmholtz free energy, specific heat , entropy and internal energy are calculated directly from the phonon density of states.

Optical Properties Of Type Iii-V Semiconductor Spherical Quantum Dot Heterostructures, Nathan Haluska
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
In recent years quantum dots (QD) have attracted increasing interest because of their wide variety of revolutionary applications. Such applications include high speed optical communication lasers, infrared photodetectors, and single photon emitters. One promising immediate application is QD solar cells. Proper analysis of the optical absorption characteristics in these solar cells requires a rigorous modeling of the electronic structure and optical properties of semiconductor heterostructures. Our emphasis will be on type III-V semiconductors. Such structures, have a great potential for increasing efficiencies, but they also possess highly degenerate and complex valence band structures. Therefore, we seek to develop a model …
Measurement Of Γ-Emission Branching Ratios For 154,156,158Gd Compound Nuclei: Tests Of Surrogate Nuclear Reaction Approximations For (N,Γ) Cross Sections, N. D. Scielzo

Scene Change Artifacts In Fourier Transform Spectroscopy Of Temporally Changing Sources, Anthony M. Young
Scene Change Artifacts In Fourier Transform Spectroscopy Of Temporally Changing Sources, Anthony M. Young
Theses and Dissertations
Improved understanding of midwave infrared (1-5 micron) spectral emissions from detonation fireballs is needed to develop phenomenological models for battle space optical forensics. The ability to measure radiance over a wide band pass at arbitrary resolutions make Fourier-transform spectrometers (FTS) an attractive tool. However, interferometer based spectroscopic measurements can be corrupted when the observed intensity changes during data acquisition. While small, random fluctuations in scene intensity translate into noise, systematic variations introduce scene-change artifacts (SCAs) into Fourier-transformed spectrum.
Passive Ranging Using Infra-Red Atmospheric Attenuation, Douglas J. Macdonald
Passive Ranging Using Infra-Red Atmospheric Attenuation, Douglas J. Macdonald
Theses and Dissertations
Methods of estimating range to an emissive target based on the depth of an atmospheric absorption band are demonstrated. The present work uses measurements of the CO2 absorption band centered at 2.0 µm where signal-to-background ratios are maximum for many applications. Model results, based on high-resolution transmission molecular absorption (HITRAN) database cross sections, are used to predict range accuracy at ranges of up to 50 km and are compared with short range (<5km) experimental results. The spectra of 23 high explosive events were used to validate the model. Using the assumption of a blackbody spectrum, extracted ranges consistently underestimated the true range by approximately 13%. By incorporating the stoichiometry of the fireball from previous research and using particulate contribution as a parameter, the error for the range estimates could be reduced to 3%.
Positron Annihilation Ratio Spectroscopy (Psars) Applied To Positronium Formation Studies, Robert C. Slaughter
Positron Annihilation Ratio Spectroscopy (Psars) Applied To Positronium Formation Studies, Robert C. Slaughter
Theses and Dissertations
A Positron Annihilation of Radiation Spectrometer (PsARS) was developed and characterized. PsARS spectroscopy as well as digital Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) was applied to measure positronium formation on gold nanoparticles deposited through an evaporative method onto a thin capillary tube. This gold coated capillary tube was designed to be used for positronium lifetime studies in local electric field experiments. High local electric fields can polarize a positron-electron pair, which may result in an extended lifetime of the positron. These fields may be created through the interaction of an external electric field with silver nanoparticles deposited onto the surface of …
Hard Collisions In Rubidium Using Sub-Doppler Spectroscopy, Douglas E. Thornton
Hard Collisions In Rubidium Using Sub-Doppler Spectroscopy, Douglas E. Thornton
Theses and Dissertations
To better understand the laser kinetics of an alkali gain medium, hard collisions, or velocity-changing collisions, has been studied and a velocity-changing collisional rate has been calculated. Previous works have studied these collisions, but no rate has been calculated. Using the precise tool of sub-Doppler spectroscopy, atomic hard collisions can be observed. The collected spectra are fitted with two different line shapes to demonstrate the accuracy of this method. From the fits, the number of hard collisions can be extracted. The time scale of the hard collisions in rubidium is interpolated by varying the chopping frequency of the pump beam, …
