Shear Viscosity of Quasi One-dimensional BEC Tubes
We consider layered Bose-Einstein condensates interacting via contact intra-condensate interacions and dipolar inter-condensate potentials, both of which dominate intercondensate tunneling (which we neglect for simplicity). For this system, we compute the normal modes, we study its localization properties by numerically computing the inverse participation ratio, and we compute the inter-tube shear viscosity.
Entanglement Negativity Conditions
This project explores bounds on entanglement negativity using operator inequalities, building on the results of [1]. We are looking for a way to quantify entanglement, as an alternative to calculating the full negativity, which would otherwise require the …

Achieving a blue economy will require reconciling the value of emerging ocean uses with their impacts on the seascape and sectors with historical access to marine resources and areas. To meet this challenge, we developed an analytical framework for conducting marine spatial planning through tradeoff analysis, and applied it to prospective offshore wind energy development in the ∼974 km2 Morro Bay, California, USA Wind Energy Area (WEA). We generated spatial data layers estimating MW power production and impacts on fisheries value and marine wildlife conservation (seabird and cetacean populations) from wind farm development. We then quantified each sector's response to …

Strain And Substrate-Induced Electronic Properties Of Novel Mixed Anion-Based 2d Schx2 (X = I/Br) Semiconductors, Ashima Rawat, Ravindra Pandey
Michigan Tech Publications
Exploration of compounds featuring multiple anions beyond the single-oxide ion, such as oxyhalides and oxyhydrides, offers an avenue for developing materials with the prospect of novel functionality. In this paper, we present the results for a mixed anion layered material, ScHX2 (X: Br, I) based on density functional theory. The result predicted the ScHX2 (X: Br, I) monolayers to be stable and semiconducting. Notably, the electronic and mechanical properties of the ScHX2 monolayers are comparable to well-established 2D materials like graphene and MoS2, rendering them highly suitable for electronic devices. Additionally, these monolayers exhibit an ability to adjust their band …
A Micromagnetic Study Of Skyrmions In Thin-Film Multilayered Ferromagnetic Materials, Nicholas J. Dubicki
A Micromagnetic Study Of Skyrmions In Thin-Film Multilayered Ferromagnetic Materials, Nicholas J. Dubicki
Dissertations
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected, localized, nanoscale spin textures in non-centrosymmetric thin ferromagnetic materials and heterostructures. At present they are of great interest to physicists for potential applications in information technology due to their particle-like properties and stability. In a system of multiple thin ferromagnetic layers, the stray field interaction was typically treated with various simplifications and approximations. It is shown that extensive analysis of the micromagnetic equations leads to an exact representation of the stray field interaction energy in the form of layer interaction kernels, a so-called 'finite thickness' representation. This formulation reveals the competition between perpendicular magnetic anisotropy …
Microwave Catalysis-Enabled Membrane Processes For Microbial Inactivation, Fangzhou Liu
Microwave Catalysis-Enabled Membrane Processes For Microbial Inactivation, Fangzhou Liu
Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the urgent need for advanced technologies to combat virus transmission. Traditional membrane filtration technologies primarily serve as physical barriers, capturing pollutants but failing to inactivate microbial agents such as bacteria and viruses. These membranes typically target larger particles but are ineffective against sub-micrometer viral particles. Thus, there's a critical demand for membrane filtration processes that combine robust filtration with antifouling and reaction -enabled functions for efficient pathogen disinfection. This research explores a novel microwave-assisted membrane filtration process incorporating catalytic reactions to enhance microbial disinfection and prevent membrane fouling, offering a groundbreaking solution to global challenges …
Numerical Techniques For Improving Simulations Of Tropical Cyclones, Yassine Tissaoui
Numerical Techniques For Improving Simulations Of Tropical Cyclones, Yassine Tissaoui
Dissertations
The increasing frequency and intensity of tropical cyclones (TCs) due to climate change pose significant challenges for forecasting and mitigating their impacts. Despite advancements, accurately predicting TC rapid intensification (RI) remains a challenge. Large eddy simulation (LES) allows for explicitly resolving the large eddies involved in TC turbulence, thus providing an avenue for studying the mechanisms behind their intensification and RI. LES of a full tropical cyclone is very computationally expensive and its accuracy will depend on both explicit and implicit dissipation within an atmospheric model. This dissertation presents two novel numerical methodologies with the potential to improve the efficiency …
Mg3sb2-Based Materials For Mid-Temperature Thermoelectric Application, Veera Prabhu K
Mg3sb2-Based Materials For Mid-Temperature Thermoelectric Application, Veera Prabhu K
Theses and Dissertations
Recently, there has been growing research in the scientific community regarding the conversion of heat flux into electricity, which has proven effective in mitigating energy crises. Solid-state thermoelectric (TE) devices use the Seebeck effect to efficiently convert waste heat into electricity. Traditional materials contain toxic, rare, and expensive elements like Lead, Tellurium, and Germanium that restrict large-scale production, commercialization, and practical utilization.
Recently, Mg3Sb2-based materials have been attractive due to their remarkable characteristics, including abundance, affordability, and environmental friendliness. Furthermore,n-type Mg3Sb2-based materials exhibit high TE performance because of their high band degeneracy in the conduction band minimum (CBM), and low …

Through experimental along with molecular docking techniques of potential fraction, this study intended to evaluate the essential phytochemical elements of Tristaniopsis merguensis leaflets as well as potential antioxidant, photoprotective, along with cytotoxic activities. The DPPH and ABTS tests were used to evaluate the antioxidant efficacy of the n-hexane (HPF), ethyl acetate (EPF), and methanol (MPF) fractions. Using an in-vitro solar protection factor (SPF) assessment, the photoprotective ability of T. merguensis components against UV damage was examined. Subsequently, invitro cytotoxic research were carried out against MCF-7 cell line (breast cancer line) assay. This was followed by molecular docking stimulation testing against …
Thermal Phase Fluctuations In Narrow Superfluid Rings, Parth Sabharwal
Thermal Phase Fluctuations In Narrow Superfluid Rings, Parth Sabharwal
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Remarkable advances have been made in the past decade in the ability to control superfluids in circuit-like configurations. Especially notable are the improvements in the initialization, stabilization and measurement of the circulation of superfluids in geometries with periodic boundary conditions, such as rings. This has significant implications for applications as rotation sensors, magnetometers, and in the emerging field of atomtronics. As the push towards studying supercurrents in lower dimensions and higher aspect ratios continues, in order to realize idealized experimental conditions and explore unusual quantum phases, phase fluctuations become increasingly pronounced, with the potential to destroy long-range order. In this …

We present the results from a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernovae observed optically within 30 Mpc during the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. No gravitational wave associated with a core-collapse supernova has been identified. We then report the detection efficiency for a variety of possible gravitational-wave emissions. For neutrino-driven explosions, the distance at which we reach 50% detection efficiency is up to 8.9 kpc, while more energetic magnetorotationally driven explosions are detectable at larger distances. The distance reaches for selected models of the black hole formation, and quantum chromodynamics phase transition are also …
Cosmic Variance Of The Hellings And Downs Correlation For Ensembles Of Universes Having Nonzero Angular Power Spectra, Deepali Agarwal, Joseph D. Romano
Cosmic Variance Of The Hellings And Downs Correlation For Ensembles Of Universes Having Nonzero Angular Power Spectra, Deepali Agarwal, Joseph D. Romano
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
Gravitational waves (GWs) induce correlated perturbations to the arrival times of pulses from an array of galactic millisecond pulsars. The expected correlations, obtained by averaging over many pairs of pulsars having the same angular separation (pulsar averaging) and over an ensemble of model universes (ensemble averaging), are described by the Hellings and Downs curve. As shown by Allen [Phys. Rev. D 107, 043018 (2023)], the pulsar-averaged correlation will not agree exactly with the expected Hellings and Downs prediction if the gravitational-wave sources interfere with one another, differing instead by a “cosmic variance” contribution. The …

Supergrowth refers to the local amplitude growth rate of a signal being faster than its fastest Fourier mode. In contrast, superoscillation pertains to the variation of the phase. Compared to the latter, supergrowth can have exponentially higher intensities and promises improvement over superoscillation-based superresolution imaging. Here, we demonstrate the experimental synthesis of controlled supergrowing fields with a maximum growth rate of ∼19.07 times the system bandlimit. Our work is an essential step toward realizing supergrowth-based far-field superresolution imaging.
Dynamical Dark Energy From Lattice Quantum Gravity, Mingwei Dai
Dynamical Dark Energy From Lattice Quantum Gravity, Mingwei Dai
Dissertations - ALL
We study various topics of Euclidean dynamical triangulations (EDT). We study the interaction of two scalar particles, and show that in the appropriate limit we recover an interaction compatible with Newton's gravitational potential in four dimensions. Working in the quenched approximation, we calculate the binding energy of a two-particle bound state, and study its dependence on the constituent particle mass in the non-relativistic limit. We find a binding energy compatible with the ground state energy by solving the Schr\"{o}dinger equation for Newton's potential. This allows us to determine the lattice spacing in EDT for the first time, and we find …

Open quantum systems (OQS) are ubiquitous in various fields of physics, such as high energy physics, cosmology, atomic and molecular physics, and quantum optics. In some cases, there is a natural separation between the system and the environment, like the presence of a horizon in inflationary cosmology. In other cases, like field theories coupled to thermal baths or at finite chemical potential, it is not practical to simulate the large number of degrees of freedom making up the bath. The system of interest can be described by an effective theory upon integrating out the environment degrees of freedom. In certain …

Studies Towards Improved Gravitational Wave Detector Thermodynamics, Daniel Vander-Hyde
Dissertations - ALL
Since the first gravitational wave detection, the Laser Interferometric Gravitational Wave Observatories (LIGO) combined with an expanding and co-observing global gravitational wave network (i.e. Virgo, KAGRA) has worked to increase a novel and growing astronomical data catalog of gravitational wave detections. With each additional observing run, rates of detection continue to increase with iterative upgrades to detector technology. Discussed within this thesis are considerations pertinent to the improvement of Dual Recycled Fabry-Perot Michelson interferometer (DRFPMI) thermodynamics proposed during LIGO's third observing run (O3) for present and future detectors. The first chapter reviews fundamental material relevant to gravitational waves and how …

On The Formation And Detectability Of H2Cncn And Its Progenitors, Ryan C. Fortenberry, Vincent J. Esposito
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
New highly exothermic formation pathways incorporating both thermodynamic and kinetic control for the newly astronomically detected H2CNCN molecule are paired with extremely accurate quantum chemical rovibrational spectroscopic computations. The reactions between astronomically known CH2CN/CH2CCH + HNCN follow effectively identical pathways and proceed through stable intermediates and over deeply submerged transition states to form H2CNCN and HCN/HCCH coproducts. Similarly, the reaction between CHM2CN and NCN− can also form H2CNCN, although this pathway first requires the initial formation of NCN−, which is currently undetected in space, via …

Open-Loop Wavefront Sensing In The Presence Of Speckle And Weak Scintillation, Derek J. Burrell, Mark F. Spencer, Ronald G. Driggers
Faculty Publications
In this paper, we show that speckle averaging helps to reduce the measurement error associated with a Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor (SHWFS); however, this reduction is rendered ineffective with increasing beacon anisoplanatism. We do so operating in a weak-scintillation regime, where the SHWFS offers robust performance, and using in-plane translation of the illuminated rough surface to accomplish frame-to-frame speckle diversity. Understanding these trade-space limitations is critical when performing wavefront sensing with noncooperative, extended-source beacons.

Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for U(1)B−L gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. UVCANDELS is a Hubble Space Telescope Cycle-26 Treasury Program awarded 164 orbits of primary ultraviolet (UV) F275W imaging and coordinated parallel optical F435W imaging in four CANDELS fields—GOODS-N, GOODS-S, EGS, and COSMOS—covering a total area of ∼426 arcmin2. This is ∼2.7 times larger than the area covered by previous deep-field space UV data combined, reaching a depth of about 27 and 28 ABmag (5σ in 0.”2 apertures) for F275W and F435W, respectively. Along with new photometric catalogs, we present an analysis of the rest-frame UV luminosity function (LF), relying on our UV-optimized aperture photometry method, yielding a factor …
Quantum Field Theory And The Limits Of Reductionism, Emily Adlam
Quantum Field Theory And The Limits Of Reductionism, Emily Adlam
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
I suggest that the current situation in quantum field theory (QFT) provides some reason to question the universal validity of ontological reductionism. I argue that the renormalization group flow is reversible except at fixed points, which makes the relation between large and small distance scales quite symmetric in QFT, opening up at least the technical possibility of a non-reductionist approach to QFT. I suggest that some conceptual problems encountered within QFT may potentially be mitigated by moving to an alternative picture in which it is no longer the case that the large supervenes on the small. Finally, I explore some …
Hot Wire Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Tungsten Oxides For Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production From Water, Marvin Bonney
Hot Wire Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Tungsten Oxides For Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production From Water, Marvin Bonney
Theses and Dissertations
Anthropogenic climate change has generated an ever-increasing global ecological, economic, and political disaster for the world. In order to contain the damage and bring atmospheric carbon under control, human use of non-renewable hydrocarbons as the primary source of fuels for transportation and electrical generation needs to be phased out at the earliest possible date. Renewable, clean energy generation is currently technologically feasible and could provide the means for decarbonization of the global energy economy, but has to overcome challenges related to the intermittency of production. Hydrogen gas is a clean burning, renewable, and highly flexible method of storing such energy …

Polar ring galaxies (PRGs) are a fascinating subgroup of early-type galaxies (ETGs) consisting of a central host galaxy - typically E/S0 - surrounded by a ring of gas, dust and stars orbitting perpedicular to the major axis of that host. In order to estimate physical properties and origins of five such objects taken from Whitmore's 1990 PRC catalog, we conduct a photometric study in optical and infrared wavebands. Data are taken from SDSS, GMOS-S, HST-WFPC2, and SST-IRAC. Each object was decomposed into a host galaxy bulge, host galaxy disk, and polar ring, and each component was fit with a Sersic …

We report experimental values for the CH stretch frequencies of the protonated fullerenes C60H+ and C70H+. Anharmonic frequency calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G level of theory, which are independent of empirical scaling factors, reproduce the experimental values to within approximately 5 cm−1. Scaling theoretical harmonic frequencies by applying factors derived for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons deviate significantly from the experimentally measured frequency. We attribute this deviation to the unusual hydrocarbon structure that affects the degree of anharmonicity of the CH stretch. This result allows us to propose an original, specific scaling factor of …

Exiting Inflation With A Smooth Scale Factor, Harry Oslislo
Theses and Dissertations
The expectation that the physical expansion of space occurs smoothly may be expressed mathematically as a requirement for continuity in the time derivative of the metric scale factor of the Friedmann–Robertson–Walker cosmology. We explore the consequences of imposing such a smoothness requirement, examining the forms of possible interpolating functions between the end of inflation and subsequent radiation- or matter-dominated eras, using a straightforward geometric model of the interpolating behavior. We quantify the magnitude of the cusp found in a direct transition from the end of slow roll inflation to the subsequent era, analyze the validity several smooth interpolator candidates, and …

Unveiling The Magnetic And Structural Properties Of Hydrohematite : A Potential Water-Bearing Mineral On The Surface Of Mars, Abdullah Al Maruf
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Hematite (α-Fe2O3) is one of the most prevalent iron oxides in sedimentary rocks and on the surface of Mars. Recent studies suggest that natural "hydrohematite" exists, wherein hematite accommodates cations through compensation at the Fe3+–site, forming –OH bonds (i.e., structural water), with important implications for water in arid planetary environments. We present a detailed magnetic characterization to elucidate the magnetic response of H–doping on these samples, corroborating the results with first-principles calculations. First-order reversal curves show a sharp diagonal wing due to triaxial basal plane anisotropy. Low-temperature cooling experiments show the complete suppression of …

Abstract: Polling all the participants to find a time when everyone is available is the ubiquitous method of scheduling meetings nowadays. We examine the probability of a poll with m participants and ℓ possible meeting times succeeding, where each participant rejects r of the ℓ options. For large ℓ and fixed r/ℓ, we can carry out a saddle-point expansion and obtain analytical results for the probability of success. Despite the thermodynamic limit of large ℓ, the ‘microcanonical’ version of the problem where each participant rejects exactly r possible meeting times, and the ‘canonical’ version where each participant has a probability …
