A Solar Comparison, Larry Weinstein

[First paragraph] Gilbert Ward [Phys.Teach 38, 333 (Sept. 2000)] states, "You emit more than 7000 times as much heat per unit mass as the Sun does." This difference was pointed out to me much more graphically by Brian Quinn many years ago as, "If the sun were made out of gerbils, the Earth would be incinerated."

Renormalons As Dilation Modes In The Functional Space, A. Babansky, I. Balitsky Jan 2000

Renormalons As Dilation Modes In The Functional Space, A. Babansky, I. Balitsky

Physics Faculty Publications

There are two possible sources of the factorial large-order behavior of a typical perturbative series. First, the number of different Feynman diagrams may be large; second, there may be abnormally large diagrams known as renormalons. It is well known that the large combinatorial number of diagrams is described by instanton-type solutions of the classical equations. We demonstrate that, from the functional-integral viewpoint, the renormalons do not correspond to a particular configuration but manifest themselves as dilatation modes in the functional space.

The Design And Construction Of An Out-Of-Plane Sensitive Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometer For Non-Destructive Testing Applications, Alexander Burden Aug 1999

The Design And Construction Of An Out-Of-Plane Sensitive Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometer For Non-Destructive Testing Applications, Alexander Burden

Masters

There are many non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques use din industry, which employ acoustic emission, ultrasound, X-rays and thermography. Optical interferometric methodology is being increasingly used in industry. Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) is one of the principal optical interferometric techniques used in NDT to measure deformations. Optical surface metrology offers many advantages over conventional methods. These include greater sensitivity, improved lateral and vertical resolution, non-contact and full field measurement. Conventional methods of NDT however continue to be chosen over ESPI. The objective of this thesis is focused on making ESPI more feasible as a NDT technique for use in industry. …

A First Principles Warm Inflation Model That Solves The Cosmological Horizon And Flatness Problems, Arjun Berera, Marcelo Gleiser, Rudnei O. Ramos Jul 1999

A First Principles Warm Inflation Model That Solves The Cosmological Horizon And Flatness Problems, Arjun Berera, Marcelo Gleiser, Rudnei O. Ramos

Dartmouth Scholarship

A quantum field theory warm inflation model is presented that solves the horizon and flatness problems. The model obtains, from the elementary dynamics of particle physics, cosmological scale factor trajectories that begin in a radiation dominated regime, enter an inflationary regime, and then smoothly exit back into a radiation dominated regime, with non-negligible radiation throughout the evolution.

Analyzing Mean Transport Equations Of Turbulence And Linear Disturbances In Decaying Flows, W. D. Thacker, T. B. Gatski, C. E. Grosch Jan 1999

Analyzing Mean Transport Equations Of Turbulence And Linear Disturbances In Decaying Flows, W. D. Thacker, T. B. Gatski, C. E. Grosch

CCPO Publications

The decay of laminar disturbances and turbulence in mean shear-free flows is studied. In laminar flows, such disturbances are linear superpositions of modes governed by the Orr-Sommerfeld equation. In turbulent flows, disturbances are described through transport equations for representative mean quantities. The link between a description based on a deterministic evolution equation and a probability-based mean transport equation is established. Because an uncertainty in initial conditions exists in the laminar as well as the turbulent regime, a probability distribution must be defined even in the laminar case. Using this probability distribution, it is shown that the exponential decay of the …

Insulator-Metal Crossover Near Optimal Doping In Pr22xcexcuo4: Anomalous Normal-State Low Temperature Resistivity, P. Fournier, P. Mohanty, E. Maiser, S. Darzens, T. Venkatesan, C. J. Lobb, G. Czjzek, Richard A. Webb, R. L. Greene

Faculty Publications

Normal-state resistivity measurements at high fields and low temperatures in electron-doped Pr2-xCexCuO4 thin films reveal an insulator-metal crossover near a doping level x≈0.15, similar to a previous report on hole-doped La2-xSrxCuO4. The temperature dependence of the resistivity of insulatinglike samples is sublogarithmic, while for metallic samples (with x = 0.17) the resistivity is linear from 40 mK to 40 K. This surprising latter observation suggests an unusual contribution to the scattering processes at low temperature in these materials. We conclude that the ground state at x = 0.15, corresponding …

Strong Dissipative Behavior In Quantum Field Theory, Arjun Berera, Marcelo Gleiser, Rudnei O. Ramos Nov 1998

Strong Dissipative Behavior In Quantum Field Theory, Arjun Berera, Marcelo Gleiser, Rudnei O. Ramos

Dartmouth Scholarship

We study the conditions under which an overdamped regime can be attained in the dynamic evolution of a quantum field configuration. Using a real-time formulation of finite temperature field theory, we compute the effective evolution equation of a scalar field configuration, quadratically interacting with a given set of other scalar fields. We then show that, in the overdamped regime, the dissipative kernel in the field equation of motion is closely related to the shear viscosity coefficient, as computed in scalar field theory at finite temperature. The effective dynamics is equivalent to a time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau description of the approach to equilibrium …

Four Paradoxes Involving The Second Law Of Thermodynamics, D. P. Sheehan Jun 1998

Four Paradoxes Involving The Second Law Of Thermodynamics, D. P. Sheehan

Physics and Biophysics: Faculty Scholarship

Recently four independent paradoxes have been proposed which appear to challenge the second law of thermodynamics [1-8]. These paradoxes are briefly reviewed. It is shown that each paradox results from a synergism of two broken symmetries - one geometric, one thermodynamic

Factorization For High-Energy Scattering, Ian Balitsky

Physics Faculty Publications

I demonstrate that the amplitude for the high-energy scattering can be factorized into a product of two independent functional integrals over “fast” and “slow” fields which interact by means of Wilson-line operators—gauge factors ordered along the straight lines.

Intrinsic Decoherence In Mesoscopic Systems, P. Mohanty, E. M.Q. Jariwala, Richard A. Webb Apr 1997

Intrinsic Decoherence In Mesoscopic Systems, P. Mohanty, E. M.Q. Jariwala, Richard A. Webb

Faculty Publications

We present measurements of the phase coherence time τφ in six quasi-1D Au wires and clearly show that τφ is temperature independent at low temperatures. We suggest that zero-point fluctuations of the phase coherent electrons are responsible for the observed saturation of τφ. We introduce a new functional form for the temperature dependence and present the results of a calculation for the saturation value of τφ. This explains the observed temperature dependence of our samples as well as many 1D and 2D systems reported to date.

How Much Of The Nucleon Spin Is Carried By Glue?, Ian Balitsky, Xiangdong Ji Jan 1997

How Much Of The Nucleon Spin Is Carried By Glue?, Ian Balitsky, Xiangdong Ji

Physics Faculty Publications

We estimate in the QCD sum rule approach the amount of the nucleon spin carried by the gluon angular momentum: the sum of the gluon spin and orbital angular momenta. The result indicates that gluons contribute at least one half of the nucleon spin at the scale of 1GeV2.

Dynamical Effects Of Partial Orderings In Physical Systems, Adam S. Landsberg, Eric J. Friedman Oct 1996

Dynamical Effects Of Partial Orderings In Physical Systems, Adam S. Landsberg, Eric J. Friedman

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

We demonstrate that many physical systems possess an often overlooked property known as a partial-ordering structure. The detection and analysis of this special geometric property can be crucial for understanding a system's dynamical behavior. We review here the fundamental dynamical features common to all such systems, and describe how the partial ordering imposes interesting restrictions on their possible behavior. We show, for instance, that though such systems are capable of displaying highly complex and even chaotic behaviors, most of their experimentally observable behaviors will be simple. Partial orderings are illustrated with examples drawn from many branches of physics, including solid …

Dynamics Of Conversion Of Conduction Electrons Into A Collective Charge-Density-Wave Current, Alexander S. Kovalev, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr, Alexander S. Rozhavsky Jun 1996

Dynamics Of Conversion Of Conduction Electrons Into A Collective Charge-Density-Wave Current, Alexander S. Kovalev, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr, Alexander S. Rozhavsky

Faculty Publications

The exactly solvable model which describes the dynamics of transformation of conduction electrons into nonlinear charge-carrying excitations of charge-density waves in quasi-one-dimensional Peierls-Frohlich conductors is formulated and studied by the inverse scattering transformation method. The pair of self-trapped conduction electrons transform into a charged 2π kink localized in a single conducting chain and surrounded by dipoles in neighboring chains.

Oscillatory Doubly Diffusive Convection In A Finite Container, Adam S. Landsberg, Edgar Knobloch Apr 1996

Oscillatory Doubly Diffusive Convection In A Finite Container, Adam S. Landsberg, Edgar Knobloch

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

Oscillatory doubly diffusive convection in a large aspect ratio Hele-Shaw cell is considered. The partial differential equations are reduced via center-unstable manifold reduction to the normal form equations describing the interaction of even and odd parity standing waves near onset. These equations take the form of the equations for a Hopf bifurcation with approximate D4 symmetry, verifying the conclusions of the preceding paper [A.S. Landsberg and E. Knobloch, Phys. Rev. E 53, 3579 (1996)]. In particular, the amplitude equations differ in the limit of large aspect ratios from the usual Ginzburg-Landau description in having additional nonlinear terms with O(1) coefficients. …

Oscillatory Bifurcation With Broken Translation Symmetry, Adam S. Landsberg, Edgar Knobloch Apr 1996

Oscillatory Bifurcation With Broken Translation Symmetry, Adam S. Landsberg, Edgar Knobloch

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

The effect of distant endwalls on the bifurcation to traveling waves is considered. Previous approaches have treated the problem by assuming that it is a weak perturbation of the translation invariant problem. When the problem is formulated instead in a finite box of length L and the limit L--> [infinity] is taken, one obtains amplitude equations that differ from the usual Ginzburg-Landau description by the presence of an additional nonlinear term. This formulation leads to a description in terms of the amplitudes of the primary box modes, which are odd and even parity standing waves. For large L, the equations …

The inclusive A(e,e') cross section for x≃1 was measured on 2H, C, Fe, and Au for momentum transfers Q2 from 1 to 6.8 (GeV/c)2. The scaling behavior of the data was examined in the region of transition from y scaling to x scaling. Throughout this transitional region, the data exhibit ξ scaling, reminiscent of the Bloom-Gilman duality seen in free nucleon scattering.

The neutron longitudinal and transverse asymmetries A1n and A2n have been extracted from deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons by a polarized 3He target at incident energies of 19.42, 22.66, and 25.51 GeV. The measurement allows for the determination of the neutron spin structure functions g1n (x,Q2) and g2n(x,Q2) over the range 0.032 of 2 (GeV/c)2. The data are used for the evaluation of the Ellis-Jaffe and Bjorken sum rules. The neutron spin structure function g1n(x,Q2) is small and …

Effect Of Disorder On Synchronization In Prototype 2-Dimensional Josephson Arrays, Adam S. Landsberg, Yuri Braiman, Kurt Wiesenfeld Dec 1995

Effect Of Disorder On Synchronization In Prototype 2-Dimensional Josephson Arrays, Adam S. Landsberg, Yuri Braiman, Kurt Wiesenfeld

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

We study the effects of quenched disorder on the dynamics of two-dimensional arrays of overdamped Josephson junctions. Disorder in both the junction critical currents and resistances is considered. Analytical results for small arrays are used to identify a physical mechanism which promotes frequency locking across each row of the array, and to show that no such locking mechanism exists between rows. The intrarow locking mechanism is surprisingly strong, so that a row can tolerate large amounts of disorder before frequency locking is destroyed.

Disorder And Synchronization In A Josephson Junction Plaquette, Adam S. Landsberg, Yuri Braiman, Kurt Wiesenfeld Sep 1995

Disorder And Synchronization In A Josephson Junction Plaquette, Adam S. Landsberg, Yuri Braiman, Kurt Wiesenfeld

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

We describe the effects of disorder on the coherence properties of a 2 x 2 array of Josephson junctions (a "plaquette"). The disorder is introduced through variations in the junction characteristics. We show that the array will remain one-to-one frequency locked despite large amounts of the disorder, and determine analytically the maximum disorder that can be tolerated before a transition to a desynchronized state occurs. Connections with larger N x M arrays are also drawn.

Oscillons: Resonant Configurations During Bubble Collapse, E J. Copeland, M Gleiser, H R. Müller Jun 1995

Oscillons: Resonant Configurations During Bubble Collapse, E J. Copeland, M Gleiser, H R. Müller

Dartmouth Scholarship

Oscillons are localized, non-singular, time-dependent, spherically-symmetric solutions of nonlinear scalar field theories which, although unstable, are extremely long-lived. We show that they naturally appear during the collapse of subcritical bubbles in models with symmetric and asymmetric double-well potentials. By a combination of analytical and numerical work we explain several of their properties, including the conditions for their existence, their longevity, and their final demise. We discuss several contexts in which we expect oscillons to be relevant. In particular, their nucleation during cosmological phase transitions may have wide-rangingconsequences.

Justifying A Search For A Unifying Theory Of Unconstitutional Conditions, Roberto L. Corrada Jan 1995

Justifying A Search For A Unifying Theory Of Unconstitutional Conditions, Roberto L. Corrada

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

This essay explores why many scholars, including Frederick Schauer and Larry Alexander, feel that an attempt at unification of the doctrine of unconstitutional conditions is unworthy of scholarly attention. Although the subject of this particular essay is less ambitious than the many attempts that have been made to unify the doctrine of unconstitutional conditions, and indeed proposes no unifying theory itself, it nevertheless examines why attempts to explain the doctrine in a unified way might be valid even if no unification is ultimately possible. It also attempts to persuade that a unifying theory of the doctrine may be attainable, although …

The A-dependence of the quasielastic A(e, ef'p) reaction has been studied at SLAC with 2H, C, Fe, and Au nuclei at momentum transfers Q2 = 1, 3, 5, and 6.8 (GeV/c)2. We extract the nuclear transparency T(A, Q2), a measure of the average probability that the struck proton escapes from the nucleus A without interaction. Several calculations predict a significant increase in T with momentum transfer, a phenomenon known as Color Transparency. Within the measurement uncertainty, no increase is seen for any of the nuclei studied.

Absence Of Size Dependence Of The Kondo Resistivity, V. Chandrasekhar, P. Santhanam, N. A. Penebre, Richard A. Webb, H. Vloeberghs, C. Van Haesendonck, Y. Bruynseraede

Faculty Publications

We have measured the low temperature resistivity of AuFe wires in the dilute magnetic impurity limit as a function of wire width, temperature, and magnetic field. When the width dependence of the electron-electron interaction contribution to the resistivity is taken into account, the temperature dependence of the remaining Kondo contribution to the resistivity of all samples with the same impurity concentration is identical. Similar behavior is observed for the magnetic field dependent resistivity. Thus, the Kondo contribution to the resistivity is independent of width down to 38 nm, much smaller than the Kondo length ξK=ħvF/kB …

Neutron Reflection Interferometry: Physical Principles Of Surface Analysis With Phase Information, Vladimir Gudkov, G. I. Opat, A. G. Klein Dec 1993

Neutron Reflection Interferometry: Physical Principles Of Surface Analysis With Phase Information, Vladimir Gudkov, G. I. Opat, A. G. Klein

Faculty Publications

It is shown that the analysis of surface layers by neutron reflection interferometry is considerably enhanced by performing the reflectometry with phase information. We discuss two methods of providing such information. One method involves physically adding an extra reference layer, whose amplitude and phase are known theoretically. The other uses the Lloyd's mirror configuration, in which a directly propagating ray that interferes with the reflected ray supplies the phase information. The methods have much in common with holography.

Recent efforts to derive and study a quasiconserved quantity K in the Henon-Heiles problem in terms of a single set of variables are discussed. Numerical results are given, showing how the value of such a quantity varies with time and order in a power-series expansion for K in terms of monomials of the coordinates and velocities. The lowest order in the power series for K corresponds to n =4 and the highest order to n =27, so that 24 orders are included in the series. The results are compared with an earlier study by the authors [Phys. Rev. A 42, …

Supersymmetry And The Tunneling Problem In An Asymmetric Double Well, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Prasanta K. Panigrahi, Uday P. Sukhatne

Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The techniques of supersymmetric quantum mechanics are applied to the calculation of the energy difference between the ground state and the first excited state of an asymmetric double well. This splitting, originating from the tunneling effect, is computed via a systematic, rapidly converging perturbation expansion. Perturbative calculations to any order can be easily carried out using a logarithmic perturbation theory. Our approach yield substantially better results than alternative widely used semiclassical analyses.
