Fusion Of Renewable Ring Resonator Lasers And Ultrafast Laser Inscribed Photonic Waveguides, Hengky Chandrahalim, Stephen C. Rand, Xudong Fan
Faculty Publications
We demonstrated the monolithic integration of reusable and wavelength reconfigurable ring resonator lasers and waveguides of arbitrary shapes to out-couple and guide laser emission on the same fused-silica chip. The ring resonator hosts were patterned by a single-mask standard lithography, whereas the waveguides were inscribed in the proximity of the ring resonator by using 3-dimensional femtosecond laser inscription technology. Reusability of the integrated ring resonator – waveguide system was examined by depositing, removing, and re-depositing dye-doped SU-8 solid polymer, SU-8 liquid polymer, and liquid solvent (toluene). The wavelength reconfigurability was validated by employing Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and 3,3′-Diethyloxacarbocyanine iodide (CY3) …
Double Optical Feedback And Pt-Symmetry Breaking Induced Nonlinear Dynamics In Semiconductor Lasers, Joseph S. Suelzer
Double Optical Feedback And Pt-Symmetry Breaking Induced Nonlinear Dynamics In Semiconductor Lasers, Joseph S. Suelzer
Open Access Dissertations
A central aim of this research is to probe the nonlinear dynamics that arise in a semiconductor laser due to optical feedback. We investigate two schemes of optical feedback. The first scheme subjects the laser to optical feedback from two external cavities (or two loops), wherein each cavity contains a spectral filter. Using two filtered optical feedbacks, we experimentally demonstrate the ability to elicit and control unique dynamics in the optical emission frequency (wavelength) of the laser. These results are compared to a deterministic model describing the evolution of the complex electric field and carrier density of the laser. As …

Kinetics Of Higher Lying Rb States After, Pulsed Excitation Of The D2 Transition In The Presence Of Helium, Austin J. Wallerstein
Theses and Dissertations
The Diode Pumped Alkali Laser (DPAL) is a high power, three-level laser system that employs diode bars to optically excite an alkali metal vapor. It lases along the D1 transition, between the two lowest energy levels, 2P1/2 and 2S1/2. Higher lying energy states are produced at higher population density via energy pooling and multiphoton processes. Pulsed laser excitation of rubidium at approximately 1 MW=cm2 has been studied at helium pressure up to 900 Torr. Emissions from energy states as high as 82D suggests modest ionization, though these intensities decrease drastically at buffer gas …

Zncdmgse As A Materials Platform For Advanced Photonic Devices: Broadband Quantum Cascade Detectors And Green Semiconductor Disk Lasers, Joel De Jesus
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The ZnCdMgSe family of II-VI materials has unique and promising characteristics that may be useful in practical applications. For example they can be grown lattice matched to InP substrates with lattice matched bandgaps that span from 2.1 to 3.5 eV, they can be successfully doped n-type, have a large conduction band offset (CBO) with no intervalley scattering present when strained, they have lower average phonon energies, and the InP lattice constant lies in the middle of the ZnSe and CdSe binaries compounds giving room to experiment with tensile and compressive stress. However they have not been studied in detail for …
Towards The Perfect Optical Fiber, John Ballato
Towards The Perfect Optical Fiber, John Ballato
Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
Optical fibers are being used in an ever more diverse array of applications today. Many of these modern applications are in high-power and, particularly, high power-per-unit-bandwidth systems where optical nonlinearities historically have not limited overall performance. Today, however, nominally weak effects, such as stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), are restricting continued scaling to higher optical powers. To address these limitations, the optical fiber industry has focused on fiber geometry-related solutions such as large mode area (LMA) designs. However, since all linear and nonlinear optical phenomena are fundamentally materials-based in origin, this paper identifies material solutions to present and future performance limitations …
Bifurcation Analysis Of Mutually Coupled Laser Systems, Vincent Brennan
Bifurcation Analysis Of Mutually Coupled Laser Systems, Vincent Brennan
Theses
Coupled laser systems have application in everyday modern life, including for example, telecommunications and cryptography. Therefore it is important to gain insight into the dynamic processes at work and theoretical modeling can elucidate such processes. The work presented in this thesis is primarily concerned with aspects such as excitability and phase locking in mutually coupled oscillators. Phase-only delay-coupled oscillator models are introduced to demonstrate excitability and it is subsequently shown that similar processes can occur in a low-dimensional variation of these models. Further, delay differential rate equation models also exhibit excitability and these are explored and contrasted with another, similar, …

We designed, fabricated, and characterized a monolithically integrated optofluidic ring resonator laser that is mechanically, thermally, and chemically robust. The entire device, including the ring resonator channel and sample delivery microfluidics, was created in a block of fused-silica glass using a 3-dimensional femtosecond laser writing process. The gain medium, composed of Rhodamine 6G (R6G) dissolved in quinoline, was flowed through the ring resonator. Lasing was achieved at a pump threshold of approximately 15 μJ/mm2. Detailed analysis shows that the Q-factor of the optofluidic ring resonator is 3.3 × 104, which is limited by both solvent …

Reconfigurable Solid-State Dye-Doped Polymer Ring Resonator Lasers, Hengky Chandrahalim, Xudong Fan
Faculty Publications
This paper presents wavelength configurable on-chip solid-state ring lasers fabricated by a single-mask standard lithography. The single- and coupled-ring resonator hosts were fabricated on a fused-silica wafer and filled with 3,3′-Diethyloxacarbocyanine iodide (CY3), Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and 3,3′-Diethylthiadicarbocyanine iodide (CY5)-doped polymer as the reconfigurable gain media. The recorded lasing threshold was ~220 nJ/mm2 per pulse for the single-ring resonator laser with R6G, marking the lowest threshold shown by solid-state dye-doped polymer lasers fabricated with a standard lithography process on a chip. A single-mode lasing from a coupled-ring resonator system with the lasing threshold of ~360 nJ/mm2 per pulse …

Inductive Measurement Of Optically Hyperpolarized Phosphorous Donor Nuclei In An Isotopically Enriched Silicon-28 Crystal, P. Gumann, O. Patange, C. Ramanathan, H. Haas
Dartmouth Scholarship
We experimentally demonstrate the first inductive readout of optically hyperpolarized phosphorus-31 donor nuclear spins in an isotopically enriched silicon-28 crystal. The concentration of phosphorus donors in the crystal was 1.5×1015 cm−3, 3 orders of magnitude lower than has previously been detected via direct inductive detection. The signal-to-noise ratio measured in a single free induction decay from a 1 cm3 sample (≈1015 spins) was 113. By transferring the sample to an X-band ESR spectrometer, we were able to obtain a lower bound for the nuclear spin polarization at 1.7 K of ∼64%. The 31P-T2 measured with a Hahn echo sequence was …

Universality Of Returning Electron Wave Packet In High-Order Harmonic Generation With Midinfrared Laser Pulses, Anh-Thu Le, Hui Wei, Cheng Jin, Vu Ngoc Tuoc, Toru Morishita, C. D. Lin
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We show that a returning electron wave packet in high-order harmonic generation (HHG) with midinfrared laser pulses converges to a universal limit for a laser wavelength above about 3µm. The results are consistent among the different methods: a numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, the strong-field approximation, and the quantum orbits theory. We further analyze how the contribution from different electron "trajectories" survives the macroscopic propagation in the medium. Our result thus provides a new framework for investigating the wavelength scaling law for the HHG yields.
Zinc Oxide Random Laser Threshold Enhancement Via Addition Of Passive Scatterers, Zachariah M. Peterson, Rolf Könenkamp, Robert Campbell Word
Zinc Oxide Random Laser Threshold Enhancement Via Addition Of Passive Scatterers, Zachariah M. Peterson, Rolf Könenkamp, Robert Campbell Word
Student Research Symposium
Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a wide bandgap n-type semiconductor with a variety of optical and electrical applications and many methods of fabrication. Strong optical scattering and photoluminescence from ZnO nanoparticles and films makes the material an ideal candidate for a random laser. Previous studies have shown both incoherent and coherent random lasing from ZnO films and particles agglomerations. When used as a passive scatterer in a laser dye gain medium, the addition of ZnO has been shown to improve the threshold for lasing. By combining active scattering ZnO with a passive scatterer, MgO, we show here that the lasing threshold …

Iron-Doped Zinc Selenide: Spectroscopy And Laser Development, Jonathan W. Evans
Theses and Dissertations
We examine the quantum mechanics of optically active ions in crystals. Insight is developed which qualitatively explains the shape of the optical absorption and emission spectra of Fe2+ ions in II-VI materials. In addition to a discussion of the relevant theory, this work explores experimental techniques for absorption spectroscopy, laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy, and upper-state lifetime measurements in detail. The data collected from these experiments are interpreted in the context of the theories developed herein. The theory and data are used to develop a simple model of the temperature dependence of the upper-state lifetime of Fe2+ ions in ZnSe. …

We present a novel and quite general analysis of the interaction of a high-field chirped laser pulse and a relativistic electron, in which exquisite control of the spectral brilliance of the up-shifted Thomson-scattered photon is shown to be possible. Normally, when Thomson scattering occurs at high field strengths, there is ponderomotive line broadening in the scattered radiation. This effect makes the bandwidth too large for some applications and reduces the spectral brilliance. We show that such broadening can be corrected and eliminated by suitable frequency modulation of the incident laser pulse. Furthermore, we suggest a practical realization of this compensation …

External Cavity Mode-Locked Semiconductor Lasers For The Generation Of Ultra-Low Noise Multi-Gigahertz Frequency Combs And Applications In Multi-Heterodyne Detection Of Arbitrary Optical Waveforms, Josue Davila-Rodriguez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The construction and characterization of ultra-low noise semiconductor-based mode-locked lasers as frequency comb sources with multi-gigahertz combline-to-combline spacing is studied in this dissertation. Several different systems were built and characterized. The first of these systems includes a novel mode-locking mechanism based on phase modulation and periodic spectral filtering. This mode-locked laser design uses the same intra-cavity elements for both mode-locking and frequency stabilization to an intra-cavity, 1,000 Finesse, Fabry-Pérot Etalon (FPE). On a separate effort, a mode-locked laser based on a Slab-Coupled Optical Waveguide Amplifier (SCOWA) was built. This system generates a pulse-train with residual timing jitter of

Metrology Of Volume Chirped Bragg Gratings Recorded In Photo-Thermo-Refractive Glass For Ultrashort Pulse Stretching And Compressing, Christopher Lantigua
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chirped Bragg gratings (CBGs) recorded in photo-thermo-refractive (PTR) glass provide a very efficient and robust way to stretch and compress ultra-short laser pulses. These gratings offer the ability to stretch pulses from hundreds of femtoseconds, to the order of 1 ns and then recompress them. However, in order to achieve pulse stretching of this magnitude, 100 mm thick CBGs are needed. Using these CBGs to both stretch, and re-compress the pulse thus requires propagation through 200 mm of optical glass. This therefore demands perfect control of the glass homogeneity, as well as the holographic recording process of the CBG. In …
Quantum-Dot Mode-Locked Lasers With Optical Injection, Tatiana Habruseva
Quantum-Dot Mode-Locked Lasers With Optical Injection, Tatiana Habruseva
Theses
In this thesis novel stabilised ultra-fast pulse sources for a range of practical applications have been developed.
Semiconductor mode-locked lasers have much promise as sources of short, low- jitter, high repetition rate pulses. Development of stabilised semiconductor sources is in a great demand for applications, such as optical telecommunications, frequency metrology, optical sampling and clock recovery. Arbitrary waveform generation, wavelength-division and orthogonal-frequency-division multiplexing techniques need wide stable frequency combs with low phase noise. A low level of pulse-to-pulse timing fluctuations is essential for clock recovery, optical sampling and optical time- division multiplexing. Therefore, this work dealing with the development of …
Modeling Free-Carrier Absorption And Avalanching By Ultrashort Laser Pulses, Jeremy R. Gulley
Modeling Free-Carrier Absorption And Avalanching By Ultrashort Laser Pulses, Jeremy R. Gulley
Faculty Articles
In the past decade it was demonstrated experimentally that negatively-chirped laser pulses can lower the surface LIDT for wide band-gap materials by decreasing the number of photons required for photoionization on the leading edge of the pulse. Similarly, simulations have shown that positively-chirped pulses resulting from selffocusing and self-phase modulation in bulk dielectrics can alter the onset of laser-induced material modifications by increasing the number of photons required for photoionization on the leading edge of the pulse. However, the role of multi-chromatic effects in free-carrier absorption and avalanching has yet to be addressed. In this work a frequency-selective model of …

Ultra High Density Spectral Beam Combining By Thermal Tuning Of Volume Bragg Gratings In Photo-Thermo-Refractive Glass, Derrek Drachenberg
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
High power lasers with diffraction limited beam quality are desired for many applications in defense and manufacturing. A lot of applications require laser beams at the 100 kW power level along with divergence close to the diffraction limit. The figure of merit for a beam used in such applications should be radiance which determines the laser power delivered to a remote target. One of the primary limiting factors is thermal distortion of a laser beam caused by excessive heat generated in the laser media. Combination of multiple laser beams is usually considered as a method to mitigate these limitations. Spectral …

Abstract
Research to determine basic molecular properties utilizing pump/probe experiments is an on going effort at SLAC. Here we have been given the task to generate mid-IR laser pulses and commission a mid-IR detector for said experiments and research. The mid-IR pulses will be used to probe the changes in molecular properties induced by exciting the electrons in molecules with visible pump pulses. In order to accomplish this, an optical parametric amplifier (OPA) has been set-up and aligned. The pump beam for the OPA is a 40 femtosecond 800nm …

We propose coupled cavities to realize a strong enhancement of the Raman scattering. Five sub cavities are embedded in the photonic crystals. Simulations through finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method demonstrate that one cavity, which is used to propagate the pump beam at the optical-communication wavelength, has a Q factor as high as 1.254 × 108 and modal volume as small as 0.03μm3 (0.3192(λ/n)3). These parameters result in ultra-small threshold lasing power ~17.7nW and 2.58nW for Stokes and anti-Stokes respectively. The cavities are designed to support the required Stokes and anti-Stokes modal spacing in silicon. The proposed structure …

Theses and Dissertations
Variable-delay tunable optical delay line or optical buffers are critical for the development of all-optical networks components as well as interferometry and analytic instruments. Recent research on slow light may hold the key for the development of the first practical tunable optical delay device. In this research the linear dispersion delay effects in an alkali vapor. The hyperfine relaxation observations present insight into the complex bleach wave dynamics during a high-intensity pulsed pump in DPAL systems.

Rubidium Recycling In A High Intensity Short Duration Pulsed Alkali Laser, Wooddy S. Miller
Theses and Dissertations
Laser induced fluorescence was used to study how pump pulse duration and alkali recycle time effects maximum power output in a Diode Pumped Alkali Laser (DPAL) system. A high intensity short pulsed pump source was used to excited rubidium atoms inside a DPAL-type laser. The maximum output power of the laser showed a strong dependence upon the temporal width of the pump pulse in addition to the input pump intensity. A linear relationship was observed between the maximum output power and the pulse width due to the effective lifetime of the excited state, defined as the time it takes for …

Correlated Two-Photon Emission By Transitions Of Dirac-Volkov States In Intense Laser Fields: Qed Predictions, Erik Lotstedt, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In an intense laser field, an electron may decay by emitting a pair of photons. The two photons emitted during the process, which can be interpreted as a laser-dressed double Compton scattering, remain entangled in a quantifiable way: namely, the so-called concurrence of the photon polarizations gives a gauge-invariant measure of the correlation of the hard gamma rays. We calculate the differential rate and concurrence for a backscattering setup of the electron and photon beam, employing Volkov states and propagators for the electron lines, thus accounting nonperturbatively for the electron-laser interaction. The nonperturbative results are shown to differ significantly compared …

Q-Switched And Mode Locked Short Pulses From A Diode Pumped, Yb-Doped Fiber Laser, Seth M. Swift
Theses and Dissertations
A diode-pumped, ytterbium (Yb)-doped fiber laser system was designed and demonstrated to operate in continuous wave (cw), passively Q-switched and possibly passively mode locked operation. To our knowledge, this was the first fiber laser oscillator built at the Air Force Institute of Technology. A Cr4+:YAG (Chromium: Ytterbium Aluminum Garnett) crystal was used as a saturable absorber to generate Q-switched pulses. Attempts to mode lock the laser were performed using a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) and through nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). The best output power result was 5 Watts (W) while pumping at 8.3 W, yielding 60% efficiency …

We illustrate a new method of analyzing three-dimensional momentum images of high-energy photoelectrons generated by intense phase-stabilized few-cycle laser pulses. Using photoelectron momentum spectra that were obtained by velocity-map imaging of above-threshold ionization of xenon and argon targets, we show that the absolute carrier-envelope phase, the laser peak intensity, and pulse duration can be accurately determined simultaneously (with an error of a few percent). We also show that the target structure, in the form of electron-target ion elastic differential cross sections, can be retrieved over a range of energies. The latter offers the promise of using laser-generated electron spectra for …

Laser-induced electron recollisions are fundamental to many strong field phenomena in atoms and molecules. Using the recently developed quantitative rescattering theory, we demonstrate that the nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) of atoms by lasers can be obtained quantitatively in terms of inelastic collisions of the target ions with the free returning electrons where the latter are explicitly given by a spectrum-characterized wave packet. Using argon atoms as target, we calculated the NSDI yield including contributions from direct (e,2e) electron-impact ionization and electron-impact excitation accompanied by subsequent field ionization. We further investigate the dependence of total NSDI on the carrier-envelope phase of …

We have investigated the formation of in-bandgap delocalized modes due to random lattice disorder as determined from the longitudinal mode spacing in a distributed Bragg laser. We were able to measure the penetration depth, and from transfer matrix simulations, determine how the localization length is altered for disordered lattices. Transfer matrix simulations and studies of the ensemble average were able to connect the gap delocalized modes to localized modes outside of the gap as expected from consideration of Anderson localization, as well as identify the controlling parameters.

Based on high-order harmonic generation (HHG) spectra obtained from solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for atoms, we established quantitatively that the HHG yield can be expressed as the product of a returning electron wave packet and photorecombination cross sections, and the shape of the returning wave packet is shown to be largely independent of the species. By comparing the HHG spectra generated from different targets under identical laser pulses, accurate structural information, including the phase of the recombination amplitude, can be retrieved. This result opens up the possibility of studying the target structure of complex systems, including their time evolution, …
