Radio And Infrared Selected Optically Invisible Sources In The Boötes Ndwfs, James L. Higdon, Sarah J.U. Higdon, Steven P. Willner, Michael J. I. Brown, D. Stern, Emeric Le Floc'h, Peter Eisenhardt

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We have combined data from the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey in Bo¨otes and the Spitzer Space Telescope to determine basic properties for sixteen optically “invisible” MIPS 24 µm (OIMS) and thirty-five optically “invisible” radio (OIRS) sources, including their spectral energy distributions (SED) and luminosities. Most OIMSs possess steep power-law SEDs over λrest = 1 − 10 µm, indicating the presence of obscured AGN in agreement with Spitzer spectroscopy. These objects are extremely luminous at rest-frame near and mid-IR (νLν(5 µm) ≈ 1038 − 1039 W), consistent with accretion near the Eddington limit and further implying that they host buried QSOs. …

Evidence For Merger Remnants In Early-Type Host Galaxies Of Low-Redshift Qsos, Nicola Bennert, Gabriela Canalizo, Bruno Jungwiert, Alan Stockton, François Schweizer, Chien Y. Peng, Mark Lacy Apr 2008

Evidence For Merger Remnants In Early-Type Host Galaxies Of Low-Redshift Qsos, Nicola Bennert, Gabriela Canalizo, Bruno Jungwiert, Alan Stockton, François Schweizer, Chien Y. Peng, Mark Lacy

Physics

We present results from a pilot HST ACS deep imaging study in broadband V of five low-redshift QSO host galaxies classified in the literature as ellipticals. The aim of our study is to determine whether these early-type hosts formed at high redshift and have since evolved passively, or whether they have undergone relatively recent mergers that may be related to the triggering of the nuclear activity. We perform two-dimensional modeling of the light distributions to analyze the host galaxies' morphology. We find that, while each host galaxy is reasonably well fitted by a de Vaucouleurs profile, the majority of them …

Spitzer Observations Of Tidal Dwarf Galaxies, Sarah J.U. Higdon, James L. Higdon Feb 2008

Spitzer Observations Of Tidal Dwarf Galaxies, Sarah J.U. Higdon, James L. Higdon

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We present Spitzer observations of Tidal Dwarf Galaxies (TDGs) in three interacting systems: NGC 5291, Arp 105 & Stephan’s Quintet. The spectra show bright emission from polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nebular lines and warm molecular hydrogen, characteristic of recent episodes of star formation. The PAH emission that falls in the IRAC 8.0 µm band leads to the TDGs having an extremely red IRAC color, with [4.5] − [8.0] > 3. The emission from PAHs is characterized by a model with mainly neutral 100-C PAH atoms.

Observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope have recently revealed a significant population of high-redshift (z ∼ 2) dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs) with large (rest-frame) mid-infrared to ultraviolet luminosity ratios. Due to their optical faintness, these galaxies have been previously missed in traditional optical studies of the distant universe. We present a simple method for selecting this high-redshift population based solely on the ratio of the observed mid-infrared 24µm to optical R-band flux density. We apply this method to observations of the ≈ 8.6 deg2 Bo¨otes Field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey, and uncover ≈2,600 DOG candidates (i.e., a surface density …

Stability Of Hickson Groups Of Galaxies, Ibrahim Selim, Naseer Iqbal Jan 2008

Stability Of Hickson Groups Of Galaxies, Ibrahim Selim, Naseer Iqbal

Turkish Journal of Physics

In this work we have used the Viril theorem to investigate the dynamical stability of Hickson compact groups of galaxies. The average luminous mass of the galaxies member is approximately 1.3 \times 0^{11} M_{\odot} and average total luminous mass of group is approximately 4.6 \times 0^{11} M_{\odot}. The virial theorem has used to estimate the virial mass. The average Virial mass of group of galaxies is approximately 6.3 \times 0^{13} M_{\odot} This is attributed to the presence of large amount of dark matter which is more than 90% in this group. Hickson compact groups of galaxies are unstable system due …

Structure Formation Inside Triaxial Dark Matter Halos: Galactic Disks, Bulges, And Bars, Clayton Heller, Isaac Shlosman, Evangelie Athanassoula Dec 2007

Structure Formation Inside Triaxial Dark Matter Halos: Galactic Disks, Bulges, And Bars, Clayton Heller, Isaac Shlosman, Evangelie Athanassoula

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We investigate formation and evolution of galactic disks immersed in assembling live DM halos. Models have been evolved from cosmological initial conditions and represent the collapse of an isolated density perturbation. The baryons include gas participating in star formation (SF) and stars with the energy feedback onto the ISM. We find that (1) the triaxial halo figure tumbling is insignificant and the angular momentum (J) is channeled into the internal circulation, while the baryonic collapse is stopped by the centrifugal barrier; (2) density response of the (disk) baryons is out of phase with DM, thus washing out the …

Spectacular Shells In The Host Galaxy Of The Qso Mc2 1635+119, Gabriela Canalizo, Nicola Bennert, Bruno Jungwiert, Alan Stockton, François Schweizer, Mark Lacy, Chien Peng Nov 2007

Spectacular Shells In The Host Galaxy Of The Qso Mc2 1635+119, Gabriela Canalizo, Nicola Bennert, Bruno Jungwiert, Alan Stockton, François Schweizer, Mark Lacy, Chien Peng

Physics

We present deep HST ACS images and Keck spectroscopy of MC2 1635+119, a QSO hosted by a galaxy previously classified as an undisturbed elliptical galaxy. Our new images reveal dramatic shell structure indicative of a merger event in the relatively recent past. The brightest shells in the central regions of the host are distributed alternately in radius, with at least two distinct shells on one side of the nucleus and three on the other, out to a distance of ~13 kpc. The light within the five shells comprises ~6% of the total galaxy light. Lower surface brightness ripples or tails …

Size And Properties Of The Narrow-Line Region In Seyfert-2 Galaxies From Spatially-Resolved Optical Spectroscopy, N. Bennert, B. Jungwiert, S. Komossa, M. Haas, R. Chini Sep 2006

Size And Properties Of The Narrow-Line Region In Seyfert-2 Galaxies From Spatially-Resolved Optical Spectroscopy, N. Bennert, B. Jungwiert, S. Komossa, M. Haas, R. Chini

Physics

Context. While [O III] narrow-band imaging is commonly used to measure the size of the narrow-line regions (NLRs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), it can be contaminated by emission from surrounding starbursts. Recently, we have shown that long-slit spectroscopy provides a valuable alternative approach to probe the size in terms of AGN photoionisation. Moreover, several parameters of the NLR can be directly accessed. Aims. We here apply the same methods developed and described for the Seyfert-2 galaxy NGC 1386 to study the NLR of five other Seyfert-2 galaxies by using high-sensitivity spatially-resolved optical spectroscopy obtained at the VLT and the …

Size And Properties Of The Narrow-Line Region In Seyfert-1 Galaxies From Spatially-Resolved Optical Spectroscopy, N. Bennert, B. Jungwiert, S. Komossa, M. Hass, R. Chini

Physics

Context.Spatially resolved emission-line spectroscopy is a powerful tool for determining the physical conditions in the narrow-line region (NLR) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We recently used optical long-slit spectroscopy to study the NLRs of a sample of six Seyfert-2 galaxies. We have shown that such an approach, in comparison to the commonly used [ ] narrow-band imaging alone, allows us to probe the size of the NLR in terms of AGN photoionisation. Moreover, several physical parameters of the NLR can be directly accessed. Aims.We here apply the same methods to study the NLR of six Seyfert-1 galaxies and …

The Radio Structure Of Radio-Quiet Quasars, C. Leipski, H. Falcke, N. Bennert, S. Hüttenmeister Aug 2006

The Radio Structure Of Radio-Quiet Quasars, C. Leipski, H. Falcke, N. Bennert, S. Hüttenmeister

Physics

Aims. We investigate the radio emitting structures of radio-quiet active galactic nuclei with an emphasis on radio-quiet quasars to study their connection to Seyfert galaxies. Methods. We present and analyse high-sensitivity VLA radio continuum images of 14 radio-quiet quasars and six Seyfert galaxies. Results. Many of the low redshift radio-quiet quasars show radio structures that can be interpreted as jet-like outflows. However, the detection rate of extended radio structures on arcsecond scales among our sample decreases with increasing redshift and luminosity, most likely due to a lack of resolution. The morphologies of the detected radio emission indicate strong interactions of …

[O Iii] Profile Substructure In Radio-Quiet Quasars, C. Leipski, N. Bennert Mar 2006

[O Iii] Profile Substructure In Radio-Quiet Quasars, C. Leipski, N. Bennert

Physics

Interactions between the radio jet and the optical emission of the narrow-line region (NLR) are a well known phenomenon in Seyfert galaxies. Here, we present the study of possible jet-NLR interactions in five radio-quiet PG quasars with double or triple radio structure. High spatial and spectral resolution observations were carried out in the H-[O III] 5007 wavelength range. In all cases, there is evidence for [O III] profile substructure (shoulders, subpeaks, blueshifted "broad'' components) with different clarity. To measure the velocity, line width, intensity, and location of these [O III] components, several Gaussians were fitted. Often, the substructures are more …

Size And Properties Of The Nlr In The Seyfert-2 Galaxy Ngc1386, N. Bennert, B. Jungwiert, S. Komossa

Physics

We study the narrow-line region (NLR) of the Seyfert-2 galaxy NGC 1386 by means of long-slit spectroscopy obtained with FORS1 at the VLT. We use the galaxy itself for subtracting the stellar template, applying reddening corrections to fit the stellar template to the spectra of the NLR. The continuum gets steadily redder towards the nucleus. The spatial distribution of the reddening derived from the Balmer decrement differs from the continuum reddening, indicating dust within the NLR with a varying column density along the line of sight. Using spatially resolved spectral diagnostics, we find a transition between central line ratios falling …

Spectral Characteristics Of Water Megamaser Galaxies. Ii. Eso103-G035, Txs 2226-184, And Ic1481, N. Bennert, H. Schulz, C. Henkel May 2004

Spectral Characteristics Of Water Megamaser Galaxies. Ii. Eso103-G035, Txs 2226-184, And Ic1481, N. Bennert, H. Schulz, C. Henkel

Physics

Long-slit optical emission-line spectra of the H2O megamaser galaxies ESO 103-G035, TXS 2226-184, and IC 1481 are evaluated in order to look for characteristics typical for water-megamaser galaxies. We present rotation curves, line ratios, electron densities, temperatures, and H luminosities. The successful line-profile decompositions rest on d-Lorentzians with an additional parameter d to adjust the wings, rather than Gaussians or Lorentzians as basic functions. No significant velocity gradient is found along the major axis in the innermost 2 kpc of TXS 2226-184. IC 1481 reveals a spectrum suggestive of a vigorous starburst in the …

Size And Structure Of The Narrow-Line Region Of Quasars, Nicola Bennert, Heino Falcke, Hartmut Schulz, Andrew S. Wilson, Beverley J. Wills Aug 2002

Size And Structure Of The Narrow-Line Region Of Quasars, Nicola Bennert, Heino Falcke, Hartmut Schulz, Andrew S. Wilson, Beverley J. Wills

Physics

We have observed the narrow-line regions (NLRs) of the seven brightest radio-quiet Palomar-Green (or Bright Quasar Survey) quasars (z < 0.5) with the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Linear-ramp filters were used to image the [O III] λ5007 line emission with 00455-01 pixel resolution. We find that the NLRs are very compact with typical extents of 2''-4''. Two quasars show compact filamentary structures similar to Seyfert NLRs. They may be related to radio outflows. Most interestingly, when including a sample of Seyfert galaxies observed with HST, we tentatively find that the size of the NLR is proportional to the square root …

We present the results of a 2 yr long optical monitoring program of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Ark 564. The majority of this monitoring project was also covered by X-ray observations (RXT E), and for a period of ~50 days, we observed the galaxy in UV (HST) and X-rays (RXTE and ASCA) simultaneously with the ground-based observations. Rapid and large-amplitude variations seen in the X-ray band, on a daily and hourly timescale, were not detected at optical and UV wavelengths, which in turn exhibited much lower variability either on short (1 day) or long (several months) timescales. The only …

A Spectroscopic Redshift For The Cl 0024+16 Multiple Arc System: Implications For The Central Mass Distribution, Tom Broadhurst, Xiaosheng Huang, Brenda Frye, Richard Ellis

Physics and Astronomy

We present a spectroscopic redshift of z = 1.675 for the well-known multiply lensed system of arcs seen in the z = 0.39 cluster Cl 0024+16. In contrast to earlier work, we find that the lensed images are accurately reproduced by a projected mass distribution which traces the locations of the brightest cluster elliptical galaxies, suggesting that the most significant minima of the cluster potential are not dynamically erased. The averaged mass profile is shallow and consistent with predictions of recent numerical simulations. The source redshift enables us to determine an enclosed cluster mass of M(<100 kpc h-1) = …

We report on the results of intensive ultraviolet spectral monitoring of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783. The nucleus of NGC 3783 was observed with the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite on a regular basis for a total of 7 months, once every 4 days for the first 172 days and once every other day for the final 50 days. Significant variability was observed in both continuum and emission-line fluxes. The light curves for the continuum fluxes exhibited two well-defined local minima or "dips," the first lasting ≤20 days and the second ≤ 4 days, with additional episodes of relatively rapid …
