Public Exposure To U.S. Commercial Nuclear Power Plants Induced Disasters, Dean Kyne
Public Exposure To U.S. Commercial Nuclear Power Plants Induced Disasters, Dean Kyne
Sociology Faculty Publications
This study explores the potential risks associated with the 65 U.S.-based commercial nuclear power plants and the distribution of those risks among the populations of both their respective host communities and of the communities located in outlying areas. First, it starts by examining the racial/ethnic composition of the host community populations, as well as the disparities in socioeconomic status that exist, if any, between the host communities and communities located in outlying areas. Second, it utilizes two independent-sample T tests to identify any differences in the sociodemographic compositions of the two areas. Third, it explores regional demographic trends by looking …
High Efficiency And Wide Color Gamut Liquid Crystal Displays, Zhenyue Luo
High Efficiency And Wide Color Gamut Liquid Crystal Displays, Zhenyue Luo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Liquid crystal display (LCD) has become ubiquitous and indispensable in our daily life. Recently, it faces strong competition from organic light emitting diode (OLED). In order to maintain a strong leader position, LCD camp has an urgent need to enrich the color performance and reduce the power consumption. This dissertation focuses on solving these two emerging and important challenges. In the first part of the dissertation we investigate the quantum dot (QD) technology to improve the both the color gamut and the light efficiency of LCD. QD emits saturated color and grants LCD the capability to reproduce color vivid images. …
Mid-Infrared Plasmonics, Farnood Khalilzadeh Rezaie
Mid-Infrared Plasmonics, Farnood Khalilzadeh Rezaie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation reports investigations into materials for, and applications of, infrared surface plasmon polaritons (SPP). SPPs are inhomogeneous electromagnetic waves that are bound to the surface of a conductor. Tight confinement of electromagnetic energy, the primary virtue of SPPs for so-called "plasmonic" applications, requires plasma frequencies for the conductor near the intended infrared operational frequencies. This requires carrier concentrations that are much less than those of usual metals such as gold and silver. I have investigated the optical properties and SPP excitation resonances of two materials having infrared plasma frequencies, namely the semimetal bismuth and the transparent conducting fluorine-doped tin-oxide …
Electromechanical Lifting Actuation Of A Mems Cantilever And Nano-Scale Analysis Of Diffusion In Semiconductor Device Dielectrics, Imen Rezadad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents experimental and theoretical studies of physical phenomena in micro- and nano-electronic devices. Firstly, a novel and unproven means of electromechanical actuation in a micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) cantilever was investigated. In nearly all MEMS devices, electric forces cause suspended components to move toward the substrate. I demonstrated a design with the unusual and potentially very useful property of having a suspended MEMS cantilever lift away from the substrate. The effect was observed by optical micro-videography, by electrical sensing, and it was quantified by optical interferometry. The results agree with predictions of analytic and numerical calculations. One potential application …
Entanglement And Coherence In Classical And Quantum Optics, Kumel Kagalwala
Entanglement And Coherence In Classical And Quantum Optics, Kumel Kagalwala
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
We explore the concepts of coherence and entanglement as they apply to both the classical and quantum natures of light. In the classical domain, we take inspiration from the tools and concepts developed in foundational quantum mechanics and quantum information science to gain a better understanding of classical coherence theory of light with multiple degrees of freedom (DoFs). First, we use polarization and spatial parity DoFs to demonstrate the notion of classical entanglement, and show that Bell's measure can serve as a useful tool in distinguishing between classical optical coherence theory. Second, we establish a methodical yet versatile approach called …
Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Functional Oxide Materials For Crystalline Silicon Solar Cells, Kristopher Davis
Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Functional Oxide Materials For Crystalline Silicon Solar Cells, Kristopher Davis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Functional oxides are versatile materials that can simultaneously enable efficiency gains and cost reductions in crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells. In this work, the deposition of functional oxide materials using atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) and the integration of these materials into c-Si solar cells are explored. Specifically, thin oxide films and multi-layer film stacks are utilized for the following purposes: (1) to minimize front surface reflectance without increasing parasitic absorption within the anti-reflection coating(s); (2) to maximize internal back reflectance of rear passivated cells, thereby increasing optical absorption of weakly absorbed long wavelength photons (? > 900 nm); (3) …

White Light Continuum For Broadband Nonlinear Spectroscopy, Trenton Ensley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Supercontinuum (SC) generation, oftentimes referred to as white-light continuum (WLC), has been a subject of interest for more than 40 years. From the first observation of WLC in condensed media in the early 1970s to the first observation of WLC in gases in the mid-1980s, much work has been devoted to developing a framework for understanding the complex nature of this phenomenon as well as discovering its utility in various applications. The main effort of this dissertation is to develop a WLC for the purpose of broadband nonlinear spectroscopy and use it in spectroscopic measurements. The ability to generate a …
Two-Photon Absorption In Bulk Semiconductors And Quantum Well Structures And Its Applications, Himansu Pattanaik
Two-Photon Absorption In Bulk Semiconductors And Quantum Well Structures And Its Applications, Himansu Pattanaik
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a study and possible applications of two-photon absorption (2PA), in direct-gap semiconductors and quantum-well (QW) semiconductor structures. One application uses extremely nondegenerate (END) 2PA, for mid-infrared (mid-IR) detection in uncooled semiconductors. The use of END, where the two photons have very different energies gives strong enhancement comapared to degenerate 2PA. This END-2PA enhanced detection is also applied to mid-IR imaging and light detection and ranging (LIDAR) in uncooled direct-gap photodiodes. A theoretical study of degenerate 2PA (D-2PA) in quantum wells, QWs, is presented, along with a new theory of ND 2PA in …
Selective Electro-Magnetic Absorbers Based On Metal-Dielectric-Metal Thin-Film Cavities, Janardan Nath
Selective Electro-Magnetic Absorbers Based On Metal-Dielectric-Metal Thin-Film Cavities, Janardan Nath
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Efficient absorption of light is required for a large number of applications such as thermo-photovoltaics,thermal imaging, bio-sensing, thermal emitters, astronomy, and stealth technology. Strong light absorbers found in nature with high intrinsic losses such as carbon black, metal-black, and carbon nano-tubes etc. are bulky, not design-tunable and are hard to pattern for micro- and nano- devices. We developed thin-film, high performance absorbers in the visible, near-, mid-, long-wave - and far-IR region based on a 3 layer metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) structure. We fabricated a 3-layerMDMabsorber with large band-widths in the visible and near IR spectral range without any lithographic patterning. This …
Theoretical Study Of Laser Beam Quality And Pulse Shaping By Volume Bragg Gratings, Sergiy Kaim
Theoretical Study Of Laser Beam Quality And Pulse Shaping By Volume Bragg Gratings, Sergiy Kaim
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The theory of stretching and compressing of short light pulses by the chirped volume Bragg gratings (CBG) is reviewed based on spectral decomposition of short pulses and on the wavelength-dependent coupled wave equations. The analytic theory of diffraction efficiency of a CBG with constant chirp and approximate theory of time delay dispersion are presented. Based on those, we performed comparison of the approximate analytic results with the exact numeric coupled-wave modeling. We also study theoretically various definitions of laser beam width in a given cross-section. Quality of the beam is characterized by the dimensionless beam propagation products (?x???_x)?? , which …
Spectral Study Of Asteroids And Laboratory Simulation Of Asteroid Organics, Kelsey Hargrove
Spectral Study Of Asteroids And Laboratory Simulation Of Asteroid Organics, Kelsey Hargrove
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
We investigate the spectra of asteroids at near- and mid-infrared wavelengths. In 2010 and 2011 we reported the detection of 3 ?m and 3.2-3.6 ?m signatures on (24) Themis and (65) Cybele indicative of water-ice and complex organics [1] [2] [3]. We further probed other primitive asteroids in the Cybele dynamical group and Themis family, finding diversity in the shape of their 3 ?m [4] [5] [6] and 10 ?m spectral features [4]. These differences indicated mineralogical and compositional variations within these asteroid populations. Also in the mid-infrared region we studied a larger population of asteroids belonging to the Bus …
Conservation Laws And Electromagnetic Interactions, Veerachart Kajorndejnukul
Conservation Laws And Electromagnetic Interactions, Veerachart Kajorndejnukul
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Aside from energy, light carries linear and angular momenta that can be transferred to matter. The interaction between light and matter is governed by conservation laws that can manifest themselves as mechanical effects acting on both matter and light waves. This interaction permits remote, precise, and noninvasive manipulation and sensing at microscopic levels. In this dissertation, we demonstrated for the first time a complete set of opto-mechanical effects that are based on nonconservative forces and act at the interface between dielectric media. Without structuring the light field, forward action is provided by the conventional radiation pressure while a backward movement …

With the emerging interest in nanoscale materials, the fascinating field of surface science is rapidly growing and presenting challenges to the design of both experimental and theoretical studies. The primary aim of this dissertation is to shed some light on the physical and chemical properties of selected nanoscale materials at the interface. Furthermore, we will discuss the effective application of cutting edge theoretical and experimental techniques that are invaluable tools for understanding the systems at hand. To this effect, we use density functional theory (DFT) with the inclusion of van der Waals (vdW) interactions to study the effect of long-range …

Vanadium Oxide Microbolometers With Patterned Gold Black Or Plasmonic Resonant Absorbers, Evan Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
High sensitivity uncooled microbolometers are necessary to meet the needs of the next generation of infrared detectors, which seek low power consumption and production cost without sacrificing performance. Presented here is the design, fabrication, and characterization of a microbolometer with responsivity enhanced by novel highly absorptive coatings. The device utilizes a gold-doped vanadium oxide film in a standard air bridge design. Performance estimations are calculated from current theory, and efforts to maximize signal to noise ratio are shown and evaluated. Most notably, presented are the experimental results and analysis from the integration of two different absorptive coatings: a patterned gold …
Translocation Of A Semiflexible Polymer Through A Nanopore, Ramesh Adhikari
Translocation Of A Semiflexible Polymer Through A Nanopore, Ramesh Adhikari
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The transport of a biomolecule through a nanopore occurs in many biological functions such as, DNA or RNA transport across nuclear pores and the translocation of proteins across the eukaryotic endoplasmic reticulum. In addition to the biological processes, it has potential applications in technology such as, drug delivery, gene therapy, and single molecule sensing. The DNA translocation through a synthetic nanopore device is considered as the basis for cheap and fast sequencing technology. Motivated by the experimental advances, many theoretical models have been developed. In this thesis, we explore the dynamics of driven translocation of a semiflexible polymer through a …
Photon Statistics In Disordered Lattices, Hasan Kondakci
Photon Statistics In Disordered Lattices, Hasan Kondakci
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Propagation of coherent waves through disordered media, whether optical, acoustic, or radio waves, results in a spatially redistributed random intensity pattern known as speckle -- a statistical phenomenon. The subject of this dissertation is the statistics of monochromatic coherent light traversing disordered photonic lattices and its dependence on the disorder class, the level of disorder and the excitation configuration at the input. Throughout the dissertation, two disorder classes are considered, namely, diagonal and off-diagonal disorders. The latter exhibits disorder-immune chiral symmetry -- the appearance of the eigenmodes in skew-symmetric pairs and the corresponding eigenvalues in opposite signs. When a disordered …
Parallel Fabrication And Transport Properties Of Carbon Nanotube Single Electron Transistors, Muhammad Islam
Parallel Fabrication And Transport Properties Of Carbon Nanotube Single Electron Transistors, Muhammad Islam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Single electron transistors (SET) have attracted significant attention as a potential building block for post CMOS nanoelectronic devices. However, lack of reproducible and parallel fabrication approach and room temperature operation are the two major bottlenecks for practical realization of SET based devices. In this thesis, I demonstrate large scale single electron transistors fabrication techniques using solution processed single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and studied their electron transport properties. The approach is based on the assembly of individual SWNTs via dielectrophoresis (DEP) at the selected position of the circuit and formation of tunnel barriers on SWNT. Two different techniques: i) metal-SWNT …
Nanoelectronic Devices Using Carbon Nanotubes And Graphene Electrodes: Fabrication And Electronic Transport Investigations, Narae Kang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fabrication of high-performance electronic devices using the novel semiconductors is essential for developing future electronics which can be applicable in large-area, flexible and transparent displays, sensors and solar cells. One of the major bottlenecks in the fabrication of high-performance devices is a large interfacial barrier formation at metal/semiconductor interface originated from Schottky barrier and interfacial dipole barrier which causes inefficient charge injection at the interface. Therefore, having a favorable contact at electrode/semiconductor is highly desirable for high-performance devices fabrication. In this dissertation, the fabrication of nanoelectronic devices and investigation of their transport properties using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene as …

Logical Pre- And Post-Selection Paradoxes Are Proofs Of Contextuality, Matthew F. Pusey, Matthew S. Leifer
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
If a quantum system is prepared and later post-selected in certain states, “paradoxical” predictions for intermediate measurements can be obtained. This is the case both when the intermediate measurement is strong, i.e. a projective measurement with Lüders-von Neumann update rule, or with weak measurements where they show up in anomalous weak values. Leifer and Spekkens [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 200405] identified a striking class of such paradoxes, known as logical pre- and postselection paradoxes, and showed that they are indirectly connected with contextuality. By analysing the measurement-disturbance required in models of these phenomena, we find that the strong measurement version …
Nlo Evolution Of 3-Quark Wilson Loop Operator, I. Balitsky, A. V. Grabovsky
Nlo Evolution Of 3-Quark Wilson Loop Operator, I. Balitsky, A. V. Grabovsky
Physics Faculty Publications
It is well known that the high-energy scattering of a meson from some hadronic target can be described by the interaction of that target with a color dipole formed by two Wilson lines corresponding to the fast quark-antiquark pair. Moreover, the energy dependence of the scattering amplitude is governed by the evolution equation of this color dipole with respect to rapidity. Similarly, the energy dependence of scattering of a baryon can be described in terms of evolution of a three-Wilson-line operator with respect to the rapidity of the Wilson lines. We calculated the evolution of the 3-quark Wilson loop operator …

High-Velocity Spoke Cavities, C. S. Hopper, Hyekyoung Park
Physics Faculty Publications
There are several current and recent projects which explore the feasibility of spoke-loaded cavities operating in the high-velocity region. Spoke cavities have a large number of geometric parameters which often influence multiple rf properties. Fabricating, handling, and processing these cavities presents some unique challenges, not unlike other TEM-class structures. This paper will summarize the current efforts toward the design, fabrication, and testing of spoke cavities with optimum beta greater than 0.8.

Characterising The Effect Of A Novel Optical Delay Line And Light Sources On The Resolvability Of Time Domain Optical Coherence Tomography, Paul V. Jansz
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a reflection based imaging technique, with numerous applications, initially in medical diagnostics. Unlike ultrasound, another reflection imaging technique, OCT relies on light scattering in samples, low coherence near- infrared interferometry, and graphical image construction, to acquire 2D and 3D reflectogram images. OCT has resolution an order of magnitude greater than ultrasound, but its depth penetration is less than a few millimetres.
Axial resolution is a critical parameter in determining whether OCT can be used to resolve specific features in a sample image. Typically, measures of resolution have been attributed only to the light source’s characteristics, …
The Contribution Of Non-Thermal And Advanced Oxidation Technologies Towards Dissipation Of Pesticide Residues, N. Misra
Articles
Background
The use of pesticides has stabilised the food production to a great extent and their usage cannot be avoided anymore. Nevertheless, common food processing operations always allowed dissipating pesticide residues in foods to some extent. Within the food science community and the food processing sector, non-thermal food technologies are being researched and commercialised at a great pace over the past three decades.
Scope and Approach
In this review we provide a critical analysis of the literature pertinent to the fate of pesticide residues during non-thermal processing of solid and liquid foods. We also identify the opportunities for further development …

Geometry Dependence Of The Sign Problem In Quantum Monte Carlo Simulations, V. Iglovikov, Ehsan Khatami, R. Scalettar
Faculty Publications
The sign problem is the fundamental limitation to quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the statistical mechanics of interacting fermions. Determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) is one of the leading methods to study lattice fermions, such as the Hubbard Hamiltonian, which describe strongly correlated phenomena including magnetism, metal-insulator transitions, and possibly exotic superconductivity. Here, we provide a comprehensive dataset on the geometry dependence of the DQMC sign problem for different densities, interaction strengths, temperatures, and spatial lattice sizes. We supplement these data with several observations concerning general trends in the data, including the dependence on spatial volume and how this can …

Finite-Temperature Superconducting Correlations Of The Hubbard Model, Ehsan Khatami, Richard Scalettar, Rajiv Singh
Faculty Publications
We utilize numerical linked-cluster expansions (NLCEs) and the determinantal quantum Monte Carlo algorithm to study pairing correlations in the square-lattice Hubbard model. To benchmark the NLCE, we first locate the finite-temperature phase transition of the attractive model to a superconducting state away from half filling. We then explore the superconducting properties of the repulsive model for the d-wave and extended s-wave pairing symmetries. The pairing structure factor shows a strong tendency to d-wave pairing and peaks at an interaction strength comparable to the bandwidth. The extended s-wave structure factor and correlation length are larger at higher temperatures but clearly saturate …

Multiscale Examination And Modeling Of Electron Transport In Nanoscale Materials And Devices, Douglas R. Banyai
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
For half a century the integrated circuits (ICs) that make up the heart of electronic devices have been steadily improving by shrinking at an exponential rate. However, as the current crop of ICs get smaller and the insulating layers involved become thinner, electrons leak through due to quantum mechanical tunneling. This is one of several issues which will bring an end to this incredible streak of exponential improvement of this type of transistor device, after which future improvements will have to come from employing fundamentally different transistor architecture rather than fine tuning and miniaturizing the metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs) …
