Improvement In Electroabsorption And The Effect Of The Electric Field In The Tuneable Wavelength Converter, Hüseyi̇n Sari, Esi̇n Kasapoğlu, Yüksel Ergün, İsmai̇l Sökmen

Turkish Journal of Physics

The numerical results of the study of a novel wavelength converter which can be tuned with the application of an external field are presented. For this device, exciton binding energies, radiuses and the absorption coefficient are numerically analysed as a function of electric field. We showed that the interband transition energy and the overlap function between electron and hole changes abruptly when an electric field is applied. This phenomenon can be used the increase the change in the absorption coefficient and reduce the on-state transmission loss in electroabsorption modulators.

We present the results of our studies concerning the pulsed operation of a bulk GaInAsP/InP vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL). The device is tailored to emit at around 1.5 \mu m at room temperature. The structure has a 45 period n-doped GaInAsP/InP bottom distributed Bragg reflector (DBR), and a 4 period Si/Al_2O_3 dielectric top reflector defining a 3-\lambda cavity. Electroluminescence from a 16 \mu m diameter top window was measured in the pulsed injection mode. Spectral measurements were recorded in the temperature range between 125K and 240K. System of equations of motion for interacting electromagnetic field and charged bodies is derived by means of an action principle in six-dimensional space with a three-dimensional time vector. The influence of the additional (hidden) components of time on the body motion is considered. Macroscopic experiments and astrophysical observations which can reveal the time multi-dimensionality are discussed. At present there are no facts which would be in contradiction with the hypothesis of the multi-dimensionality of time.

By virtue of the consideration of polarization and phase properties of dipole radiation in the quantum domain, it is shown that the concept of free electromagnetic field should be considered as a quite risky approximation in the description of quantum fluctuations of some physical observables.

The master equation for a two-level atom interacting with a strong coherent field and damped into a reservoir formed by a finite bandwidth squeezed vacuum is derived. The master equation extends the Yeoman and Barnett approach to a non-zero detuning of the driving field from the atomic resonance and allows to discuss the role of squeezing bandwidth and the detuning in the level shifts, widths and intensities of spectral lines. The approach is valid for arbitrary values of the Rabi frequency and detuning but for the squeezing bandwidths larger than the natural linewidth in order to satisfy the Markov approximation.

An effective approach to multiple scattering of electromagnetic waves by disordered dielectric media is developed. A self-consistent energy-conserving coupled-dipole model is used. Applications to the Anderson localization of electromagnetic waves are presented. A complete set of Maxwell's equations is used to describe the propagation of waves and the vector character of the electromagnetic field is fully taken into account.

Old Weyl's the idea of scale recalibration freedom and Infeld's and van der Waerden's (IW) ideas concerning geometrical interpretation of natural spinor phase gauge symmetry are discussed in the context of modern models of fundamental particle interactions. It is argued that (IW) gauge symmetry can be naturaly identified with the U(1) symmetry of the Weinberg-Salam model. It is also argued that there are no serious reasons to reject Weyl's gauge theory from consideration. Its inclusion enriches the original Weinberg-Salam theory and leads to prediction of new phenomena that do not contradict experiments.

It is substantiated that spin is a notion associated with the group of internal symmetry that is tightly connected with the geometrical structure of spacetime. The wave equation for the description of a particle with spin one half is proposed. On this ground it is shown that the spin of electron is exhibited through the quantum number and accordingly the Dirac equation describes properties of particles with the projection of spin \pm \hbar/2. The effects arising from accelerated and decelerated motion of charged point particles inside a medium are studied. It is shown explicitly that, in addition to the bremsstrahlung and Cherenkov shock wave, the electromagnetic shock wave arising from the charge velocity exceeding the medium light velocity should be observed. This shock wave has the same singularity as the Cherenkov one and therefore, it is more singular than the bremsstrahlung shock wave. The space-time regions where these shock waves exist and conditionsunder which they appear are determined.

We discuss gauge freedom within the scope of the enlarged Helmholtz theorem and Neumann-Debye decomposition and then demonstrate its realization for the multipole expansion of a conserved electromagnetic current. The exact solution to the latter problem was obtained in 1974, but answers to some purely mathematical questions raised by I.B. French and Y. Shimamoto [1] about 40 years ago are given in this paper for the first time.

Influence Of Electrical Field On Pulsed Laser Beam Welding Of Stainless Steel (304), Salah A. H. Fawzi̇, Raz N. Ari̇f

Pulsed laser beam welding experiment were carried out on stainless steel (SUS 304), using vertical and horizontal electric fields of different intensities to study its effectiveness on the welding process, regarding depth and weld quality. Pulsed Nd: YAG laser emitting 10 ms pulses in the TEM_{00} mode at 1.06 \mu m wave length was employed, microstructure of welded zone and defect were investigated using optical and scanning electron microscopes. Tensile test and microhardness measurements were carried out to evaluate the weld quality. Welding by this method increased the efficiency tremendously and a depth increase of 85% was achieved.

We investigated the effect of ^{60}Co \gamma-irradiation (doses from 10^2 to 2 \times 10^6 Gy), both without and with heat annealing, on silicon IMPATT diode parameters. It is shown that such treatments improve the diode characteristics (particularly decrease the reverse current and increase both the output and the diffusion length of the minority charge carriers) due to radiation-enhanced processes.

In this short note we summarize some of the work of our thesis, which is also reported elsewhere in detail. We have examined the one loop quantum corrections to the W pair production in the electron positron annihilation in the context of supersymmetric electroweak theory. We have adopted the On Mass Shell Renormalization scheme of Sakakibara and previously demonstrated the consistency of this scheme. The relevant analytic results are written out. Implications Of \Delta\Rho And Charm Ii Data For Z' Physics, Durmuş Ali̇ Demi̇r

We discuss the constraints on the Z^{\prime} model parameters coming from Z-pole and low-energy \nu_{\mu}-e scattering data in the frame work of GUT-motivated models. We find that when the coupling constant of the extra U(1) is small (large) the parameter space is mainly determined by the Z-pole (the low-energy \nu_{\mu}-e scattering) data.

A modified system of equations of electrodynamics of continuous media has been obtained. Beside the Lagrangian system an alternative gauge-like formalism has been developed to introduce the toroid moment contributions in the obtained equations. The two potential formalism that was worked out by us earlier has been developed further where along with the two vector potentials we introduce two scalar potentials thus taking into account all four basic equations of electromagnetism.

This paper describes recent results using our approach to calculating self-consistently single (SS) and multiple-scattering (MS) Debye- Waller factors (DWF) on active sites of metalloproteins. The calculation of MS DWF, together with the Feff7 program allows us to simulate ab-initio EXAFS spectra for a given temperature systems with no adjustable parameters. In our latest report (Dimakis N., and Bunker G., 1998) we calculate, using density functional and semiempirical approaches, the SS and MS DWF for small molecules and compared them to Raman, infrared and EXAFS spectra. Symmetry breaking surface fields give rise to nontrivial and long-ranged order parameter profiles for critical systems such as fluids, alloys, or magnets confined to wedges. We discuss the properties of the corresponding universal scaling functions of the order parameter profile and the two-point correlation function, and determine the critical exponents η∥ and η⊥ for the so-called normal transition.

We have developed version 1.0 of a freely available (including source code) suite of basic X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) data analysis programs for data reduction and single scattering analysis. This package is based on the University of Washington (UW/NRL) Fortran 77 programs that are available on the International XAFS Society (IXS) database, complemented by a graphical TCL/TK scripting language based user interface which runs virtually unchanged between platforms, using the native look and feel of the corresponding platform. The behavior of mesoscopic particles dissolved in a dilute solution of long, flexible, and nonadsorbing polymer chains is studied by field-theoretic methods. For spherical and cylindrical particles the solvation free energy for immersing a single particle in the solution is calculated explicitly. Important features are qualitatively different for self-avoiding polymer chains as compared with ideal chains. The results corroborate the validity of the Helfrich-type curvature expansion for general particle shapes and allow for quantitative experimental tests. The inclusive forward jet cross section in deep inelastic e+p scattering has been measured in the region of cursive Greek chi-Bjorken, 4.5 · 10-4 to 4.5 · 10-2. This measurement is motivated by the search for effects of BFKL-like parton shower evolution. The cross section at hadron level as a function of cursive Greek chi is compared to cross sections predicted by various Monte Carlo models. An excess of forward jet production at small cursive Greek chi is observed, which is not reproduced by models based on DGLAP parton shower evolution. Individual single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) or small ropes of SWNTs with the same diameter have been characterised by Raman spectroscopy. Highly pure, length-selected SWNTs adsorbed onto substrates designed for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy were investigated with a Raman microscope. Various spectra, each with a distinct sharp peak in the radial breathing mode area and four C–C stretching modes could be observed. The modes also showed a strong variation in the relative intensities. In correlation with theoretical predictions this should establish Raman microscopy as a non-destructive nano-technological tool, capable of determining the diameter, symmetry and position of individual SWNTs.

The DIS diffractive cross section, dσdiffγ*p→XN/dMx, has been measured in the mass range Mx < 15 GeV for γ*p c.m. energies 60 < W < 200 GeV and photon virtualities Q2 = 7 to 140 GeV2. For fixed Q2 and Mx, the diffractive cross section rises rapidly with W, dσdiffγ*p→X N (Mx, W, Q2)/dMx ∝ Wadiff with adiff = 0.507 ± 0.034 (stat) +0.155-0.046 (syst) corresponding to a t-averaged pomeron trajectory of ̄αℙ = 1.127 ± 0.009 (stat) +0.039-0.012 (syst) which is larger than ̄αℙ observed in hadron-hadron scattering. The W dependence of the diffractive cross section is found to be the same as that of the total cross section for scattering of virtual photons on protons. The data are consistent with the assumption that the diffractive structure function FD(3)2 factorizes according to cursive greek chiℙFD(3)2(cursive greek chiℙ, β, Q2) = (cursive greek chi0//cursive greek chiℙ)nFD(2)2(β, Q2). They are also consistent with QCD based models which incorporate factorization breaking. The rise of cursive greek chiℙFD(3)2 with decreasing cursive greek chiℙ and the weak dependence of FD(2)2 on Q2 suggest a substantial contribution from partonic interactions.

Leading charm hadrons produced in hadron-nucleus interactions cannot be adequately described within the parton fusion model. Recent results on charm baryon production in ∑-A interactions at 330 GeV with the WA89 detector disagree with fusion predictions. Intrinsic heavy quark pairs in the ∑- (dds) wavefunction provide a simple mechanism for producing fast charm hadrons. We calculate leading charm baryon production from ∑-, ∏- and p projectiles in a two component model combining parton fusion with intrinsic charm. Final state D-, ∑ncn0, ≡ncn+, and ∧ncn+ dσ/dxnF …

Relative-moving boundary problems have a wide variety of applications. They appear in staging during a launch process, store separation from a military aircraft, rotor-stator interaction in turbomachinery, and dynamic aeroelasticity.

The dynamic unstructured technology (DUT) is potentially a strong approach to simulate unsteady flows around relative-moving bodies, by solving time-dependent governing equations. The dual-time stepping scheme is implemented to improve its efficiency while not compromising the accuracy of solutions.
