Gamma-ray binaries are luminous in gamma rays, composed of a compact object orbiting a massive companion star. The interaction between these two objects can drive relativistic outflows, either jets or winds, in which particles can be accelerated to energies reaching hundreds of teraelectronvolts (TeV). However, it is still debated where and under which physical conditions particles are accelerated in these objects and ultimately whether protons can be accelerated up to PeV energies. Among the well-known gamma-ray binaries, LS 5039 is a high-mass X-ray binary with an orbital period of 3.9 days that has been observed up to TeV energies by …
Collision Kinematics For Fast Positron Impact Ionization Of Argon, Robert D. Dubois, Károly Tőkési
Collision Kinematics For Fast Positron Impact Ionization Of Argon, Robert D. Dubois, Károly Tőkési
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Classical trajectory Monte Carlo calculations for 1 keV positron impact ionization of argon are presented. A combination of energy-weighted triple differential cross-sections is shown to provide good to excellent agreement compared with experimental data, depending on the ejected electron azimuthal angular acceptance range used to define in-plane scattering. For ejected electron energies less than 100 eV, information about the influence of pre- (the impact parameter) and post-(the direction of scattering) collision kinematics on the triple differential level is obtained. An overall picture of these kinematic properties is also presented for single differential cross-sections as a function of ejected electron energy …

Extended gamma-ray emission around isolated pulsars at TeV energies, also known as TeV halos, have been found around a handful of middle-aged pulsars. The halos are significantly more extended than their pulsar wind nebulae but much smaller than the particle diffusion length in the interstellar medium. The origin of TeV halos is unknown. Interpretations invoke either local effects related to the environment of a pulsar or generic particle transport behaviors. The latter scenario predicts that TeV halos would be a universal phenomenon for all pulsars. We searched for extended gamma-ray emission around 36 isolated middle-aged pulsars identified by radio and …

Stability, Binding, And Charge Localization In Amorphous Tin Monoxide: A-Sno And A-Sn-Ta-O With Variable Composition, Julia E. Medvedeva, Joshua Santy, Mathew Pollard
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The structural, electronic, and optical properties of amorphous SnO and Sn-Ta-O (with Sn:Ta ratios 5:1, 3:2, and 1:2) are investigated as a function of density and metal composition using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and hybrid functional calculations. The short- and medium-range structures of amorphous oxides are thoroughly studied by calculating the effective coordination numbers, effective distances, distortion, and their time variances for metal-oxygen (M-O), O-M, M-M shells, the M-O-M and O-M-O angle distribution, as well as the volume, shape, and distribution of structural voids. Disorder is found to suppress both Sn-O and Sn-Sn coordination but not the O-Sn coordination. …

Tunable Pairing With Local Spin-Dependent Rydberg Molecule Potentials In An Atomic Fermi Superfluid, Chih Chun Chien, Seth T. Rittenhouse, S. I. Mistakidis, H. R. Sadeghpour
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We explore the energy spectrum and eigenstates of two-component atomic Fermi superfluids with tunable pairing interactions in the presence of spin-dependent ultralong-range Rydberg molecule (ULRM) potentials, within the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism. The attractive ULRM potentials lead to local-density accumulation, while their difference results in a local polarization potential and induces the in-gap Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states whose energies lie below the bulk energy gap. A transition from equal population to population imbalance occurs as the pairing strength falls below a critical value, accompanied by the emergence of local Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)-like states characterized by out-of-phase wave functions and lower energies compared to …

We present luminosity functions (LFs) and angular correlation functions (ACFs) derived from 18,960 Lyα emitters (LAEs) at z = 2.2−7.3 over a wide survey area of ≲24 deg2 that are identified in the narrowband data of the HSC-SSP and CHORUS surveys. Confirming the large sample with 241 spectroscopically identified LAEs, we determine Lyα LFs and ACFs in the brighter luminosity range down to 0.5L⋆, and confirm that our measurements are consistent with previous studies but offer significantly reduced statistical uncertainties. The improved precision of our ACFs allows us to clearly detect one-halo terms at some redshifts, and provides large-scale …

Spectral Width Of Maximum Deposition Eigenchannels In Diffusive Media, Rohin E. Mcintosh, Arthur Goetschy, Nicholas Bender, Alexey Yamilov, Chia Wei Hsu, Hasan Yllmaz, Hui Cao
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The maximum deposition eigenchannel provides the largest possible power delivery to a target region inside a diffusive medium by optimizing the incident wavefront of a monochromatic beam. It originates from constructive interference of scattered waves, which is frequency sensitive. We investigate the spectral width of the maximum deposition eigenchannels over a range of target depths using numerical simulations of a 2D diffusive system. Compared to tight focusing into the system, power deposition to an extended region is more sensitive to frequency detuning. The spectral width of enhanced delivery to a large target displays a rather weak, nonmonotonic variation with target …

Phases And Dynamics Of Quantum Droplets In The Crossover To Two-Dimensions, Jose Carlos Pelayo, George Bougas, Thomás Fogarty, Thomas Busch, Simeon I. Mistakidis
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We explore the ground states and dynamics of ultracold atomic droplets in the crossover region from three to two dimensions by solving the two-dimensional and the quasi-two-dimensional extended Gross-Pitaevskii equations numerically and with a variational approach. By systematically comparing the droplet properties, we determine the validity regions of the pure two-dimensional description, and therefore the dominance of the logarithmic nonlinear coupling, as a function of the sign of the averaged mean-field interactions and the size of the transverse confinement. One of our main findings is that droplets become substantially extended upon transitioning from negative-to-positive averaged mean-field interactions. This is accompanied …

Influence Of The Impact Parameter For Ionization Of Argon By Fast Positrons And Electrons On The Postcollision Kinematics And Triply Differential Spectra, Robert D. Dubois, K. Tokési
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Classical trajectory Monte Carlo calculations for fast positron and electron impact ionization of argon are used to provide information about how the pre- and post collision kinematics alter the triply differential spectra. It is shown that in addition to the scattering direction expected for a positive or negative projectile passing near a partially screened nuclear charge, scattering in the opposite direction also occurs. Independent of energy transfer, when the impact parameter is less than the mean radius of the 3p electron cloud, the expected direction of scattering always occurs. In contrast, for scattering in the opposite direction, the impact parameter …
Radiative Energy And Mass Shifts Of Quantum Cyclotron States, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Radiative Energy And Mass Shifts Of Quantum Cyclotron States, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Abstract: We discuss relativistic and radiative corrections to the energies of quantum cyclotron states. In particular, it is shown analytically that the leading logarithmic radiative (self-energy) correction to the bound-state energy levels of quantum cyclotron states is state independent and must be interpreted as a magnetic field-dependent correction to the electron's mass in a Penning trap.
Interferometric Differential High-Frequency Lock-In Probe For Laser-Induced Vacuum Birefringence, R. G. Bullis, Ulrich D. Jentschura, D. C. Yost
Interferometric Differential High-Frequency Lock-In Probe For Laser-Induced Vacuum Birefringence, R. G. Bullis, Ulrich D. Jentschura, D. C. Yost
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We propose a measurement of laser-induced vacuum birefringence through the use of pulsed lasers coupled to femtosecond optical enhancement cavities. This measurement technique features cavity-enhanced pump and probe pulses, as well as an independent control pulse. The control pulse allows for a differential measurement where the final signal is obtained using high-frequency lock-in detection, greatly mitigating time-dependent cavity birefringence as an important and possibly prohibitive systematic effect. In addition, the method features the economical use of laser power and results in a relatively simple experimental setup.

Generic Transverse Stability Of Kink Structures In Atomic And Optical Nonlinear Media With Competing Attractive And Repulsive Interactions, S. I. Mistakidis, G. Bougas, G. C. Katsimiga, P. G. Kevrekidis
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We demonstrate the existence and stability of one-dimensional (1D) topological kink configurations immersed in higher-dimensional bosonic gases and nonlinear optical setups. Our analysis pertains, in particular, to the two- and three-dimensional extended Gross-Pitaevskii models with quantum fluctuations describing droplet-bearing environments but also to the two-dimensional cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation containing higher-order corrections to the nonlinear refractive index. Contrary to the generic dark soliton transverse instability, the kink structures are generically robust under the interplay of low-amplitude attractive and high-amplitude repulsive interactions. A quasi-1D effective potential picture dictates the existence of these defects, while their stability is obtained numerically and analytically …

A detailed experimental and theoretical study on the local (r ≤ 4.5 Å) atomic structure of amorphous and crystalline zinc-indium-tin oxide (ZITO) thin films using grazing-incidence x-ray Pair-Distribution Functions (PDFs), ab initio Molecular Dynamics (MD), and Empirical Potential Structure Refinement (EPSR) Monte Carlo simulations is presented. High-energy synchrotron x rays, a two-dimensional detector, and different incident angles were used to probe the depth uniformity of five (ZnO)0.15 (In2O3)0.70 (SnO2)0.15 films that were deposited via pulsed-laser deposition at growth temperatures (TG) ranging from 25 to 300 °C. Films deposited at TG ≤ 150 °C were amorphous. The partially crystalline (TG = …
Coupled Oscillators And Dielectric Function, T. Das, C. A. Ullrich, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Coupled Oscillators And Dielectric Function, T. Das, C. A. Ullrich, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
A generalized Sellmeier model, also referred to as the Lorentz-Dirac model, has been used for the description of the dielectric function of a number of technologically important materials in the literature. This model represents the frequency-dependent dielectric function as a sum over Green functions of classical damped harmonic oscillators, much in analogy with the functional form used for the dynamic polarizability of an atom, but with one important addition, namely, a complex-valued oscillator strength in the numerator. Here, we show that this generalized functional form can be justified based on the response function of coupled damped oscillators. The encountered analogies …

Phases And Phase Transitions Of The Disordered Quantum Clock Model, Pulloor Kuttanikkad Vishnu, Gaurav Khairnar, Rajesh Narayanan, Thomas Vojta
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We study the phases and phase transitions of a disordered one-dimensional quantum q-state clock Hamiltonian using large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. Making contact with earlier results, we confirm that the clean, translational invariant version of the model, for q=6, hosts an intermediate emergent quasi-long-range ordered (QLRO) phase between the symmetry-broken true long-range ordered (TLRO) phase and the disordered (paramagnetic) phase. With increasing disorder strength, the quasi-long-range ordered phase shrinks and finally vanishes at a multicritical point, beyond which there is a direct transition from the TLRO phase to the paramagnetic phase. After establishing the phase diagram, we characterize the critical behaviors …
Irreducible Three-Loop Vacuum-Polarization Correction In Muonic Bound Systems, Gregory S. Adkins, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Irreducible Three-Loop Vacuum-Polarization Correction In Muonic Bound Systems, Gregory S. Adkins, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Three-loop electronic vacuum-polarization corrections due to irreducible diagrams are evaluated for two-body muonic ions with nuclear charge numbers 1≤Z≤6. The corrections are of order α3(Zα)2mr, where α is the fine-structure constant and mr is the reduced mass. Numerically, the energy corrections are found to be of the same order of magnitude as the largest of the order α2(Zα)6mr corrections, and are thus phenomenologically interesting. Our method of calculation eliminates numerical uncertainty encountered in other approaches.

TeV halos are extended very-high-energy (VHE; 0.1-100 TeV) gamma-ray emission around middle-aged pulsars. So far, they have only been found around isolated pulsars, but it has been suggested that they may also be powered by millisecond pulsars (MSPs). We searched for VHE gamma-ray emission from MSPs reported by radio and GeV gamma-ray observatories in 2565 days of data from the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory. We found no significant emission from individual pulsars. By combining the likelihood profiles of all MSPs accessible to HAWC, our analysis suggests that the excess emission around the MSP population is consistent with a background. …

The HAWC Observatory collected 6 yr of extensive data, providing an ideal platform for long-term monitoring of blazars in the very high energy (VHE) band, without bias toward specific flux states. HAWC continuously monitors blazar activity at TeV energies, focusing on sources with a redshift of z ≤ 0.3, based on the Third Fermi-LAT Catalog of High-Energy sources. We specifically focused our analysis on Mrk 421 and Mrk 501, as they are the brightest blazars observed by the HAWC Observatory. With a data set of 2143 days, this work significantly extends the monitoring previously published, which was based on 511 …

We study the response of a two-dimensional classical XY model to a finite (noninfinitesimal) twist of the boundary conditions. We use Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the free energy difference between periodic and twisted-periodic boundary conditions and find deviations from the expected quadratic dependence on the twist angle. Consequently, the helicity modulus (spin stiffness) shows a nontrivial dependence on the twist angle. We show that the deviation from the expected behavior arises because of the mixing of states with opposite chirality which leads to an additional entropy contribution in the quasi-long-range ordered phase. We give an improved prescription for the …

Topology and superconductivity, two distinct phenomena, offer unique insight into quantum properties and their applications in quantum technologies, spintronics, and sustainable energy technologies. Tin (Sn) plays a pivotal role here as an element because of its two structural phases, α-Sn exhibiting topological characteristics and β-Sn showing superconductivity. Here, we demonstrate precise control of these phases in Sn thin films using molecular beam epitaxy with systematically varied lattice parameters of the buffer layer. The Sn films exhibit either β-Sn or α-Sn phases as the buffer layer's lattice constant varies from 6.10Å to 6.48Å, spanning the range from GaSb (like InAs) to …

We study Anderson transition for light in three dimensions by performing large-scale simulations of electromagnetic wave transport in disordered ensembles of perfect-electric-conducting spatially overlapping spheres. A mobility edge that separates diffusive transport and Anderson localization is identified, revealing a sharp transition from diffusion to localization for light. Critical behavior in the vicinity of the mobility edge is well described by a single parameter scaling law. The critical exponent is found to be consistent with the value known for the Anderson transition of the orthogonal universality class. Statistical distribution of total transmission at the mobility edge is described without any fit …

A recent report on the detection of very-high-energy gamma rays from V4641 Sagittarii (V4641 Sgr) up to ≈0.8 PeV has made it the second confirmed "PeVatron" microquasar. Here we report on the observation of V4641 Sgr with X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) in 2024 September. Thanks to the large field of view and low background, the CCD imager Xtend successfully detected for the first time X-ray extended emission around V4641 Sgr with a significance of ≳4.5σ and >10σ based on our imaging and spectral analysis, respectively. The spatial extent is estimated to have a radius of 7′ ± 3′ …

Despite record efficiencies, the wide adoption of silicon heterojunction is hampered by higher costs and uncertainties in long-term performance. Although recent publications report performance loss rates comparable to other field-deployed cSi technologies, the limited availability of field data and the dispersion in performance degradation results - particularly in open-circuit voltage - remain significant concerns. Various factors, including bulk and interfacial defects, charge carrier recombination dynamics, and environmental stressors such as temperature and humidity, contribute to this degradation. Understanding the mechanisms behind the open circuit voltage degradation as well as the kinetics involved is essential for developing mitigation strategies that enhance …

We study the superfluid-insulator quantum phase transition of interacting bosons by means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations in the presence of both topological and generic quenched disorders. Recent work has demonstrated that the amplitude mode at this transition broadens and localizes in the presence of dilution disorder, whereas it remains a well-defined delocalized excitation for topological (connectivity) disorder. Here, we analyze the crossover between systems with purely topological disorder and systems with additional bond randomness to disentangle the roles that disorder and interactions play for amplitude mode localization. Specifically, we analyze the scalar susceptibility and its spectral density on both …

We explore effective approaches for describing the dynamics of induced interactions among two noninteracting distinguishable impurities (Bose polarons) when their couplings to the host species are switched on. First, we evaluate the time-dependent characteristics of each polaron through reduced single-particle models. Their validity is ultimately judged by comparing them to observables obtained within a many-body variational approach. We argue that utilizing a time-dependent optimization process with the effective mass and frequency being fitting parameters leads to an accurate matching on the level of one-body observables with the prediction of the many-body method. Next, we construct two-body effective models, which, in …

We unravel the existence and stability properties of one-dimensional droplets arising in genuine two-component particle-imbalanced bosonic mixtures under the influence of a weak harmonic confinement. A plethora of miscible droplet phases is found with the majority component atoms in the vicinity of the minority ones assembling in a droplet configuration, while the remaining excess atoms are in the gas state. Our computations identify a transition from a bound to a trapped gas many-body state for increasing total atom number and fixed interactions, with the bound character being prolonged for stronger intercomponent attractions. The spectral stability of these two-component droplets is …

We have momentum-analyzed electrons and recoil ions in triple coincidence with projectiles neutralized in 300-keV Si-+Ar collisions. The experiment was performed at a cryogenic ion storage ring with an in-ring reaction microscope. Differential momentum distributions for detachment with simultaneous target ionization were obtained. At more than 15% of the detachment-only rate the ionization rate is surprisingly large. A correlated two-electron channel is found to be dominant. This is also unexpected because the projectile energy is well below the threshold for the correlated process.

Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and hybrid functional electronic structure calculations are employed to determine the formation, the structural and electronic properties, and the dynamics of covalent (In-OH) and ionic (In-H-In) hydrogen defects at crystalline-In2O3/amorphous-In2O3−x interface. This comprehensive computational study considers (i) various interstitial and substitutional hydrogen site locations within the crystalline, amorphous, and interfacial regions; (ii) several oxygen-to-hydrogen ratios; and (iii) possible defect charged states. The results reveal hydrogen's inability to fully passivate the undercoordinated under-shared in atoms in amorphous highly substoichiometric oxide, giving rise to the formation of deep electron traps even in net-charge neutral structures. These trap …

Serotonergic axons (fibers) are a universal feature of all vertebrate brains. They form meshworks, typically quantified with regional density measurements, and appear to support neuroplasticity. The self-organization of this system remains poorly understood, partly because of the strong stochasticity of individual fiber trajectories. In an extension to our previous analyses of the mouse brain, serotonergic fibers were investigated in the brain of the Pacific angel shark (Squatina californica), a representative of a unique (ray-like) lineage of the squalomorph sharks. First, the fundamental cytoarchitecture of the angel shark brain was examined, including the expression of ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba1, …
