A Framework Of Multi-Dimensional And Multi-Scale Modeling With Applications, Zilong Li Jan 2020

A Framework Of Multi-Dimensional And Multi-Scale Modeling With Applications, Zilong Li

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, a framework for multi-dimensional and multi-scale modeling is proposed. The essential idea is based on oriented space curves, which can be represented as a 3D slender object or 1D step parameters. SMILES and Masks provide functionalities that extend slender objects into branched and other objects. We treat the conversion between 1D, 2D, 3D, and 4D representations as data unification. A mathematical analysis of different methods applied to helices (a special type of space curves) is also provided. Computational implementation utilizes Model-ViewController design principles to integrate data unification with graphical visualizations to create a dashboard. Applications of multi-dimensional …

Symmetry-Breaking In The Multi-Photon Ionization Dynamics Of Oriented Atoms, Aruma Handi Nishshanka Chandrajith De Silva

Doctoral Dissertations

“Laser cooling and trapping, femtosecond light creation, and coincident electron and ion momentum imaging was combined in a world-wide unique experimental setup. These state-of-the-art techniques were used to control atomic systems and analyze the few-body quantum dynamics in multi-photon ionization of lithium. An all-optical, near-resonant laser atom trap (AOT) was developed to prepare a lithium gas at milli-Kelvin temperatures. The atoms can be resonantly excited to the state 22 P3/2(ml = +1) with a high degree of polarization and are used as a target to study atomic multi-photon ionization in the field of an intense laser source …

Magnetic Control Of Transport Of Particles And Droplets In Low Reynolds Number Shear Flows, Jie Zhang Jan 2020

Magnetic Control Of Transport Of Particles And Droplets In Low Reynolds Number Shear Flows, Jie Zhang

A Molecular Dynamics Study Of Temperature Dependent Wetting In Alkane-Water Systems, Pauf Neupane

Doctoral Dissertations

“The wetting behavior of aqueous organic systems is of great importance in several environmental and industrial processes such as the formation and growth of atmospheric aerosols, crude oil recovery from an oil field, onsite cleaning of natural gas, and clean-up of oil spills. In this work, we employed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to explore the temperature dependent wetting behavior of octane and nonane on water in planar interfaces as well as in nanodroplets using PYS alkane and SPC/E and TIP4P/2005 water models.

For planar interfaces, we found unusual wetting behavior of octane and nonane on SPC/E water, but generally not …

Modification Of The Optical Response Of Alpha Quartz Via The Deposition Of Gold Nanoparticles In Etched Ion Tracks, Maria C. Garcia Toro

Doctoral Dissertations

”This study addresses the experimental methods used to develop and characterize plasmonic devices capable of modifying the optical response of alpha quartz via the deposition of gold nanoparticles in etched ion tracks. In the first part of the research, the microstructural characterization of latent and etched ion tracks produced in alpha quartz (α-SiO2) is presented. Single crystals of α-SiO2 were irradiated with two highly energetic ions to different nominal fluences. As expected, the morphology of the resulting ion tracks depends on the energy of the incident ion and their stopping powers within the target material. Subsequent chemical …

Fully Differential Study Of Higher-Order Contributions To The Few-Body Dynamics Of Simple Atomic Systems, Madhav Dhital Jan 2020

Fully Differential Study Of Higher-Order Contributions To The Few-Body Dynamics Of Simple Atomic Systems, Madhav Dhital

Doctoral Dissertations

”Advancing our understanding of the few-body dynamics in simple atomic systems is one of the most important goals of atomic scattering research. In perturbation theory, this goal entails accurately describing the relative contributions from first versus higher-order mechanisms. One higher-order mechanism that is particularly important for target ionization by a charged-particle impact is known as post-collision interaction (PCI). There, the projectile and the ejected electron interact with each other at least twice. In the first interaction, the projectile transfers sufficient energy for the electron to be lifted to the continuum. The second interaction occurs in the outgoing part of the …

Acoustic Confinement And Characterization Of A Microwave Plasma, Seth Lee Pree '09 Jan 2020

Acoustic Confinement And Characterization Of A Microwave Plasma, Seth Lee Pree '09

Doctoral Dissertations

High amplitude acoustic fields are used to confine, characterize, and manipulate collisional plasmas with temperatures of a few thousand Kelvin. This dissertation describes the theory, experimental techniques, and apparatus necessary both to generate high amplitude sound in a few thousand Kelvin plasma and to use that sound field to manipulate the plasma within a resonant acoustic cavity. The acoustic field in a spherically symmetric oscillating plasma has been measured to have a Mach number of .03, which is sufficient to cause acoustic radiation pressure effects to confine the plasma to the center of its container. This field also generates convection …

Coherent Effects In Wave Propagation Through Complex Media, Milan Koirala Jan 2019

Coherent Effects In Wave Propagation Through Complex Media, Milan Koirala

Doctoral Dissertations

"Diffusion is a powerful and versatile description of a typical wave propagation in a random scattering medium that disregards phase and, thus, a possibility of interference. Speckle, transmission fluctuations, wave localization, non-local correlations, and transmission eigenchannels are examples of persistent interference effects, which arise in the course of deterministic propagation. Such wave phenomena contain a wealth of information about the medium and the source of waves, enabling sensing and coherent control of the propagation. The nonlocal correlations and speckle statistics of the partially coherent light are used to uncover an object hidden by a diffusive cloak inside a strong scattering …

Decoding The History Of The Early Solar System Using Comet Volatile Compositions, Nathaniel Xavier Roth Jan 2019

Decoding The History Of The Early Solar System Using Comet Volatile Compositions, Nathaniel Xavier Roth

Doctoral Dissertations

"Understanding the evolution of the solar system, as well as its current volatile content, requires knowledge of the initial conditions present in the solar nebula. As some of the first objects to accrete in the solar nebula, cometary nuclei are among the most primitive remnants of solar system formation, and their present-day volatile composition likely reflects the composition and conditions where (and when) they formed. As such, the volatile compositions of cometary nuclei may serve as 'fossils' of solar system formation. High-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy offers a valuable tool for sampling the primary volatile (i.e., ices subliming directly from the nucleus) …

Then the method is updated to account for layered materials. The updated method is verified through full-wave simulations. In the second paper, a planar printed circuit board …

Investigating Blast Fume Propagation, Concentration And Clearance In Underground Mines Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (Cfd), Raymond Ninnang Tiile Jan 2019

Investigating Blast Fume Propagation, Concentration And Clearance In Underground Mines Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (Cfd), Raymond Ninnang Tiile

Doctoral Dissertations

"Blasting activities using standard industry explosives is an essential component of underground hard rock mining operations. Blasting operations result in the release of noxious gases, presenting both safety and productivity threats. Overestimation of post-blast re-entry time results in production losses, while underestimation leads to injuries and fatalities. Research shows that most underground mines simply standardize post-blast re-entry times based on experiences and observations. Few underground mines use theoretical methods for calculating post-blast re-entry time. These theoretical methods, however, are unable to account for the variations in the blasting conditions. Literature review shows that: (i) there is currently no means of …

Applications Of Machine Learning In Nuclear Imaging And Radiation Detection, Shaikat Mahmood Galib Jan 2019

Disorder At First-Order Classical And Quantum Phase Transitions, Ahmed Khalil Ibrahim Jan 2018

Disorder At First-Order Classical And Quantum Phase Transitions, Ahmed Khalil Ibrahim

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation studies the effects of quenched disorder on classical, quantum and nonequilibrium phase transitions. After a short introduction which covers the basic concepts of phase transitions, finite-size scaling and random disorder, the dissertation focuses on four separate but related projects. First, we investigate the influence of quenched disorder with long-range spatial correlations on the nonequilibrium phase transitions in the contact process. We show that the long-range correlations increase the probability to find rare atypical regions in the sample. This leads to enhanced Griffiths singularities and changes the universality class of the transition.

Project 2 and 3 focus on disorder …

Fully Differential Study Of Dissociative Capture In P + H₂ Collisions, Basu Ram Lamichhane

Doctoral Dissertations

"In recent years, the key role of the projectile coherence properties has been studied in several ion-atom scattering processes. These studies strongly suggested that cross sections could be significantly affected by the projectile coherence properties, especially for fast, heavy ions. In the present study, we used such coherence effects as a tool to sensitively analyze the few- body dynamics of the scattering process. To this end, we performed three kinematically complete experiments on fragmentation of H2 by 75 keV proton impacts. A novel approach was used to analyze coherence and interference effects in the observed cross-sections. The idea was …

Evolving Specialization In An Agent-Based Model Without Task-Switching Costs, Shane Robert Meyer Jan 2018

Evolving Specialization In An Agent-Based Model Without Task-Switching Costs, Shane Robert Meyer

Doctoral Dissertations

"This work examines the possibility of evolving the phenotypic specialization associated with division of labor in an agent-based model without task-switching costs. The model examines two groups competing for vital resources, where members of one group are capable of sharing resources with other agents in their group. Agents attempt to collect resources which allow them to reproduce, with more resources leading to a greater number of offspring by asexual reproduction. Four variants of the model are examined, with combinations of one or two resources and the presence of a foraging risk. The presence of the foraging risk can lead to …

However, the microalgae production in enclosed photobioreactors faces prohibitively high production costs with special difficulty in reactor design and scale-up. The light availability and utilization efficiency in the photobioreactor in terms of design and scale-up consider as the …

Correlation Between Delay Time And Measured Concentration And Concentration Uncertainty By Neutron Activation Analysis, James Thomas Seman Jan 2018

Correlation Between Delay Time And Measured Concentration And Concentration Uncertainty By Neutron Activation Analysis, James Thomas Seman

Doctoral Dissertations

"For the last several decades, it has been apparent that new methods of identifying explosives can help investigators trace their origins. One way to identify an explosive is through the use of taggants: materials added to a product that encodes information about the product such as when it was manufactured.

This research investigates the survivability of a new identification taggant called the Nuclear Barcode that overcomes some of the downfalls that have been identified in prior taggants. The Nuclear Barcode encodes information as a unique combination of concentrations of rare earths (Ho, Eu, Sm, Lu, and Dy) and precious metals …

Modeling And Characterization Of Thermo-Oxidative Behavior Of Bismaleimide Composites, Rafid Muhammad Hussein Jan 2018

Modeling And Characterization Of Thermo-Oxidative Behavior Of Bismaleimide Composites, Rafid Muhammad Hussein

Doctoral Dissertations

"High-temperature polymer matrix composites (HTPMCs) are susceptible to thermo-oxidation, which accelerates the composites' degradation and reduces the service life. Mechanical properties of HTPMCs deteriorate due to coupled thermo-oxidation and cross-linking mechanisms. Bismaleimides (BMIs) are commonly used high-temperature resins for aerospace applications. This work presents the viability of using experimental weight loss to model the spatial distribution of oxidation when the oxidized polymer matrix is not discernible. Three tasks are introduced: (1) Anisotropic oxidation prediction using optimized weight loss behavior of bismaleimide composites, (2) A multi-scale modeling of thermo-oxidative effects on the flexural behavior of cross-ply bismaleimide composites, and (3) Thermo-oxidative …

Functionalized Nanoporous Carbon Scaffolds For Hydrogen Storage Applications, Christopher L. Carr Jan 2018

Functionalized Nanoporous Carbon Scaffolds For Hydrogen Storage Applications, Christopher L. Carr

Doctoral Dissertations

"Recent efforts have demonstrated confinement in porous scaffolds at the nanoscale can alter the hydrogen sorption properties of metal hydrides, though not to an extent feasible for use in onboard hydrogen storage applications, proposing the need for a method allowing further modifications. The work presented here explores how the functionalization of nanoporous carbon scaffold surfaces with heteroatoms can modify the hydrogen sorption properties of confined metal hydrides in relation to non-functionalized scaffolds (FS). Investigations of nanoconfined LiBH4 and NaAlH4 indicate functionalizing the carbon scaffold surface with nitrogen can shift the activation energy of hydrogen desorption in excess of …
