Current Continuity In Auroral System Science, Jules Van Irsel
Current Continuity In Auroral System Science, Jules Van Irsel
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
The Earth relies on the Sun's energy, but at times this energy can be overwhelming; the Sun expels plasma which, were it not for our humble magnetic field, would erode our atmosphere (Mars, c. 4 Ga). The protective interaction Earth has with the solar wind results in spectacular auroral displays---one such auroral form is discussed in this thesis: quiet discrete auroral arcs.
Such arcs have long been studied; they are abundant, have usable symmetries, and they can predict magnetic substorms that wreak havoc in our magnetosphere. The auroral emissions, albeit beautiful, are however only the visible end of a self-consistent …

A Modular Paradigm For The Directly Efficient Representation Of Kinetic Laser-Driven Plasmas, Roland D. Hesse
A Modular Paradigm For The Directly Efficient Representation Of Kinetic Laser-Driven Plasmas, Roland D. Hesse
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
A natural inefficiency in conventional treatment of the plasma distribution arises from indiscriminate consideration of the contributions to field structure that are dynamically sourced from kinetic activity in disparate sectors of phase space. We introduce a range of techniques for model design to maximize representation efficiency without breaking key physical invariants indicative of physical reliability. An overview of varied adaptation to stable time-advance methods is given. Low-dimensional representation of a laser-driven plasma requires some creativity in differential structural modification, while direct efficiency is uncovered through the compression and rarefaction of a nonuniform momentum grid. These numerical models introduce embedded gains …

Development Of A Near Terahertz Backward Wave Oscillator Using Standard Waveguide, Alexander Glick
Development Of A Near Terahertz Backward Wave Oscillator Using Standard Waveguide, Alexander Glick
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
There is a demand for terahertz (THz) frequency radiation sources. Applications include, but are not limited to, imaging for medical and security purposes, biochemical and organic spectroscopy, and velocimetry. Historically, there was a limited supply of THz devices due to technological limitations. In recent years much progress has been made to reduce this “gap” in supply and demand for THz sources. This work proposes a vacuum electronic device that produces high power, extremely high frequency radiation in the G-band, by utilizing a backward wave oscillator (BWO) based on WR3 standard waveguide. This device is compact, fundamentally simple, and has great …
Characterization Of A Magnetically Contained Hot Filament Plasma Source With A Wide-Sweeping Langmuir Probe, Jonas Rowan
Characterization Of A Magnetically Contained Hot Filament Plasma Source With A Wide-Sweeping Langmuir Probe, Jonas Rowan
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Ionospheric plasma research in the Space and Atmospheric Instrumentation Laboratory’s Space Plasma Chamber has been hindered by the lack of a suitable plasma diagnostic instrument and understanding of its hot-filament plasma source. This thesis describes efforts made to remedy both problems. A wide-range Sweeping Langmuir Probe was developed with a ±35 V sweeping range to fully analyze ion and electron saturation regions in the entire IV curve. A method was derived to estimate the chamber source’s filament temperatures. The new Langmuir probe was integrated into a refurbished automated system designed in Python to measure plasma parameters for various chamber conditions, …
Gravity Wave Breaking Over Northern Utah With An Advanced Mesospheric Temperature Mapper And Sodium Lidar, Eric Davis
Gravity Wave Breaking Over Northern Utah With An Advanced Mesospheric Temperature Mapper And Sodium Lidar, Eric Davis
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
Considerable progress has been made in recent decades in the understanding of gravity wave (GW) dynamics. However, there remain important aspects and effects that are poorly understood. In particular, the coupling and deposition of their energy and momentum into the mesosphere lower thermosphere (MLT) region and the interaction and instability dynamics that are directly associated with GW breaking. Using an Advanced Mesosphere Temperature Mapper (AMTM) several strong wave breaking events were observed in the summer of 2015 at USU’s BLO research station. These events have exhibited high momentum fluxes and associated strong wave breaking, prompting detailed data analyses. Rossby waves, …
Power-Beaming: Wireless Energy Transfer Using Lasers, Spencer L. Barnett
Power-Beaming: Wireless Energy Transfer Using Lasers, Spencer L. Barnett
ATU Scholars Symposium
The objective of the project is to implement a wireless energy transfer system utilizing laser technology. This system involves modulating the laser’s beam profile and spatial distribution through precise optical manipulation. The energy transmitted by the laser is captured by a photovoltaic array, commonly referred to as a solar panel, which is engineered to convert incident photons into direct current (DC) electrical power. The current challenge is to develop a reliable wireless energy transfer mechanism capable of operating over extended distances, thereby overcoming the constraints imposed by wired connections, particularly in environments where wiring is impractical, such as in space. …
Statistical Study Of Solar Wind Conditions Prior To Substorm Onsets, Luke H. Francis
Statistical Study Of Solar Wind Conditions Prior To Substorm Onsets, Luke H. Francis
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Due to complex, multi-region, coupled plasma systems, auroral substorm onsets have been historically difficult to predict. The northward turning of the interplanetary magnetic field was considered the primary candidate as an external triggering mechanism for substorm onsets. However, that was later shown to be coincidental in nature. This study is motivated by recent multi-spacecraft observations that show how several magnetosheath jets at the bow shock were heavily correlated to substorm onsets, indicated by a strongly radial IMF interval. In the past, studies have looked at small samples of substorms in order to make large-scale predictions. However in this study, a …
Particle-In-Cell Coupled With Monte-Carlo Collisions And External Circuitry For Low Temperature Plasma Reactors, Richard Lombardini
Particle-In-Cell Coupled With Monte-Carlo Collisions And External Circuitry For Low Temperature Plasma Reactors, Richard Lombardini
Presentations - 2025
Low-temperature plasma reactors used for chip fabrication involve complex physical processes that affect the quality of pattern transfer on the semiconductor substrate. Detailed investigations of the near-surface plasma environment require fully-kinetic approaches. We use a particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collision (PIC/MCC) approach coupled with external circuitry to model realistic operating conditions capture the kinetic effects and measure ion energy and angle distribution functions. We build on the exascale-capable PIC/MCC code, WarpX, and leverage Python interfaces to couple external circuitry. In this talk, we will demonstrate this inexpensive, non-iterative coupled strategy using a two-dimensional Gaseous Electronics Conference reference cell.

High-Latitude Ionospheric Irregularities Characterized Through Machine Learning Methods, Anna-Marie Bals
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
This study uses Machine Learning and data-driven techniques to understand plasma irregularities in high-latitude regions better. By combining observations and recent findings from modeling, the goal is to identify and classify scintillation signatures caused by different types of irregularities in the ionosphere. The focus is on irregularities from electron precipitation in the auroral oval and ExB drifts in the polar cap. Using Machine Learning tools, the study aims to distinguish between different scintillation signatures and link them to their sources, improving our ability to detect and characterize these events. Using multiple instruments and advanced filtering, the aim is to enhance …
Developing Fixed-Bias Langmuir Probes For Multi-Point Constellation Deployments, Henry Carter Valentine
Developing Fixed-Bias Langmuir Probes For Multi-Point Constellation Deployments, Henry Carter Valentine
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Since their initial development in the early 20th century, electrostatic Langmuir probes have proved invaluable in terrestrial and interplanetary ionospheric sounding applications. When deployed aboard rocket and satellite platforms, these probes yield high-cadence, in-situ measurements of key plasma parameters such as electron density, ion density, and electron temperature. Furthermore, the efficacy of Langmuir probes in characterizing the three-dimensional structure and dynamics of ionospheric plasmas can be augmented by the technique of multi-payload deployments. In this work, we discuss the design, development, and analysis of fixed-bias Langmuir probes constructed for two multi-point science campaigns: the Mars-bound, dual-satellite Escape and Plasma Acceleration …
Streamer Discharge Simulation For Plasma-Assisted Combustion, Stuart Jairo Reyes
Streamer Discharge Simulation For Plasma-Assisted Combustion, Stuart Jairo Reyes
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A common and successful method to achieve atmospheric pressure fuel-air plasma-assisted combustion is through repetitive ns pulsed discharges and dielectric-barrier discharge. The transient phase in these discharges is dominated by transport influenced by strong space charges produced by ionization fronts, this can be best represented by the streamer model. The function of non-thermal plasma in these discharges is to excite the species in the fuel-air mixture to produce radicals which accelerate the chemical conversion reactions which directly lead to temperature rise, ultimately culminating in ignition. Therefore, the characterization of the streamer and its energy partitioning is essential to developing a …

Reflected Laser Light As A Diagnostic Insight For Femtosecond Laser-Plasma Coupling, David S. Stiles
Theses and Dissertations
High-energy laser technology is critical for military, scientific, and industrial applications, but traditional mixed-radiation facilities are hindered by cost, scheduling constraints, and lack of portability. A high-repetition-rate, cost-effective alternative is needed to meet evolving application needs and timelines. This study investigates changes in reflected laser intensity to diagnose coupling efficiency and optimize energetic particle generation in ultraintense laser-target interactions. Using an ultraintense 35 femtosecond, 9 - 12 mJ laser and a deuterated water target, reflected laser light was captured via high-resolution imaging, while energetic electron and X-ray data were collected using a custom spectrometer and ion chamber, respectively. Statistical analysis …

Lachlan Dean Coil Optimization for a High-Beta Stellarator-Tokamak Hybrid Magnetic coil configurations are developed for a tokamak-stellarator hybrid that is stable to both pressure- and current-driven modes for high values of beta. Previous work on this configuration [A. S. Ware, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett, 89, 125003 (2002)] was carried out using a fixed-boundary equilibrium (i.e., with no set of external coils) and prior attempts to develop an initial coil set using the COILOPT code were not successful. In this work, the recently developed SIMSOPT code [M. Landreman, et. al., J. Open Source Software 6, 3525 (2021)] is used to …
Determining The Transient Electric Field And The Effect Of Pulse Repetition Frequency On The Field In A Repetitive 10-Ns Pulsed Discharge In A Quiescent Ch₄-Air Mixture, Chunqi Jiang
Bioelectrics Publications
The goal of this research is to understand the underlying physics enabled by nanosecond pulsed power in a discharge initiation and the following physicochemical processes that favor lean-fuel plasma ignition for combustion. The hypothesis of this project is that pulsed power waveforms such as the pulse repetition frequency (PRF), voltage amplitude, and dielectric surface alter the reduced electric field during the initiation of the discharge, resulting in different plasma properties, which will vary the physicochemical processes for efficient and selective radical productions. This is especially important for lean-burn combustion and reducing emission.

The emittance exchange (EEX) beamline at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator (AWA) is designed to transfer properties of an electron beam phase space between the transverse and longitudinal planes. Recently, it has been proposed this beamline could be used to convert a microscale transverse modulation created by a TEM grid into a microbunch train in the longitudinal plane. Such a technique would be useful for obtaining nano-scale microbunching that does not rely on the sensitive process of FEL gain. This new approach has been proposed to enable development of a compact free-electron laser at Arizona State, greatly reducing size and cost …

Polarized Photocathode R&D At Bnl And Spin Consideration For The Eic Preinjector, Jyoti Biswas, Erdong Wang, Omer Rahman, John Skaritka, Adam Masters, Sylvain Marsillac, Tai-De Li
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Superlattice GaAs photocathodes are vital for producing polarized electron beams for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The electron pre-injector at the EIC requires a 7 nC bunch with at least 85% spin polarization from a GaAs-based superlattice cathode. The doping density of the very surface layer of the cathode needs to be optimized to extract a high bunch charge beam from the high-voltage DC gun. The polarization axis of the emitted beam is longitudinal, and it will be rotated to transverse direction using two Wien filters, each rotating the spin by 45 degrees. In this paper, we …
Three-Dimensional Spreading Of Magnetic Reconnection Between Non-Parallel Flux Ropes With A Guide Field, Regis John
Three-Dimensional Spreading Of Magnetic Reconnection Between Non-Parallel Flux Ropes With A Guide Field, Regis John
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental plasma process that facilitates the rapid conversion of magnetic energy into particle acceleration, plasma flows, and heating. It plays a central role in explosive astrophysical events such as solar flares, where vast amounts of magnetic energy are released on short time scales. A key structure in many reconnection sites is the magnetic flux rope, a column of plasma carrying current threaded by helical magnetic fields, which is frequently involved in or generated by reconnection. Understanding how reconnection unfolds in such flux rope systems is critical for interpreting both space weather phenomena and laboratory plasma dynamics. …
Reconnection-Driven Electron Acceleration, Ripudaman Singh Nirwan
Reconnection-Driven Electron Acceleration, Ripudaman Singh Nirwan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Magnetic reconnection converts the magnetic energy available in a plasma to the kinetic energy of its constituent particles. In the simplest case, it occurs between anti-parallel magnetic field lines meeting in a plane. Another variant known as ‘component reconnection’ involves field lines reconnecting at an angle, giving a non-zero magnetic field component perpendicular to the plane of reconnection. This component is known as the ‘guide field’ and it is normalized to the reconnecting field in the literature. The guide field controls the particle-scale dynamics of reconnection and influences the ensuing particle acceleration.
Component reconnection occurs in the Earth’s magnetosphere, along …

The outgassing properties of bare and magnetite-coated AISI 1020 low-carbon steel vacuum chambers were evaluated to establish material selection criteria for extreme high vacuum applications, namely, to explore the possibility of using these materials to build next-generation spin-polarized photoelectron guns. Water outgassing measurements using the throughput method revealed that the magnetite-coated chamber exhibited five times lower outgassing at room temperature prior to baking, but this advantage disappears after 80 °C baking. Hydrogen outgassing measurements demonstrated significant differences after intensive heat treatment: the bare low-carbon steel vacuum chamber achieved a specific outgassing rate of 9.6 × 10−16 Torr L s …
The Effect Of Electrode Geometry On Excited Species Production In Atmospheric Pressure Air-Hydrogen Streamer Discharge, Shirshak Kumar Dhali, Stuart Reyes
The Effect Of Electrode Geometry On Excited Species Production In Atmospheric Pressure Air-Hydrogen Streamer Discharge, Shirshak Kumar Dhali, Stuart Reyes
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
When a gas is overvolted at or near atmospheric pressure, it results in a streamer discharge formation. Electrode geometries exert significant impact on the electrical breakdown of gases by altering the spatial profile of the electric field. In many applications the efficient generation of radicals is critical and is determined by the characteristics of the streamer discharge. We examine the effect of electrode geometry on the streamer characteristics and the production of radicals. This is performed for three different electrode geometries: plane–plane, pin–plane, and pin–pin. A two-dimensional rotationally symmetric fluid model is used for the streamer discharge simulation in the …

Streamer Discharge Modeling For Plasma-Assisted Combustion, Stuart Reyes, Shirshak Kumar Dhali
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Some of the popular and successful atmospheric pressure fuel/air plasma-assisted combustion methods use repetitive ns pulsed discharges and dielectric-barrier discharges. The transient phase in such discharges is dominated by transport under strong space charge from ionization fronts, which is best characterized by the streamer model. The role of the nonthermal plasma in such discharges is to produce radicals, which accelerates the chemical conversion reaction leading to temperature rise and ignition. Therefore, the characterization of the streamer and its energy partitioning is essential to develop a predictive model. We examine the important characteristics of streamers that influence combustion and develop some …
Characterizing The Earth's Magnetosheath With In Situ Measurements, Hector A. Salinas
Characterizing The Earth's Magnetosheath With In Situ Measurements, Hector A. Salinas
Physics Dissertations - Archive
Earth’s magnetosheath is a region of shocked plasma that mediates energy and momentum transfer from the solar wind to the magnetosphere. The dynamics and thus the plasma structures of this region are highly dependent on upstream solar wind conditions. As such, the region is often characterized as a turbulent environment, with the most intense periods of turbulence occurring often under quasi-parallel bow shock conditions. This magnetosheath turbulence displays as variable and large-scale fluctuations with in-situ measurements. Given that turbulence is a characteristic feature of the magnetosheath, this dissertation asks two questions: (1) How are plasma structures inside the sheath affected …

Modeling Energetic Electron Precipitation: Radiation Belt Loss, Its Drivers, And Atmospheric Impacts, Zhi Gu Li
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Energetic electrons in the terrestrial outer radiation belt present significant hazards to spacecraft systems and human operations in space. The intensity of these electrons can vary rapidly and dramatically during geomagnetic storms, governed by a complex competition between acceleration and loss processes. Among these, precipitation into the atmosphere via resonant wave-particle interaction acts as a key loss mechanism. This dissertation focuses on improving the quantification of energetic electron precipitation using physics-based modeling constrained by low-altitude satellite observations.
We begin by developing and validating the Drift-Diffusion model, which simulates low-altitude electron dynamics while accounting for azimuthal drift, pitch-angle diffusion, and atmospheric …
Optical Measurements Of Magnetic Fields In Low-Temperature Plasmas Via Quantum Spectroscopy, Tyler James Gilbert
Optical Measurements Of Magnetic Fields In Low-Temperature Plasmas Via Quantum Spectroscopy, Tyler James Gilbert
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Accurate characterization of the magnetic field strength and direction within a plasma is increasingly important as experiments attempt to probe the physics of plasmas at kinetic scales. Non-perturbative laser-based diagnostics which are spatially and temporally localized—such as laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and Thomson scattering for the measurement of ion and electron distribution functions, respectively—are increasingly relied on for measurements in laboratory plasmas. This work seeks to develop a spatially and temporally localized non-perturbative laser-based diagnostic for the measurement of magnetic fields in laboratory-relevant plasmas. Two such techniques are investigated here: Zeeman-split LIF and quantum beat spectroscopy (QBS).
Zeeman-split LIF measures the …

Beamed: A Bench For Automated Measurements Of Electrical Discharges - A New Standard For Paschen Curves, Jared Nelson
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The initiation of electrical discharges, particularly glow discharges, plays a significant role in industry and environmental science, affecting systems such as electronics, power grids, and atmospheric phenomena. Despite extensive studies and applications of Paschen's law, current methodologies for experimental Paschen tests in direct current (DC) conditions lack standardized practices. This thesis presents the development and validation of a DC-based standard for electrical discharge initiation, using the BEnch for Automated Measurements of Electrical Discharges (BeAMED). BeAMED is designed to standardize the experimental process by automating electrical discharges' initiation and data acquisition. The autonomous nature of the system provides insights into the …

In this study, we consider three different machine-learning methods—a three-hidden-layer neural network, support vector regression, and Gaussian process regression—and compare how well they can learn from a synthetic data set for proton acceleration in the Target Normal Sheath Acceleration regime. The synthetic data set was generated from a previously published theoretical model by Fuchs et al. 2005 that we modified. Once trained, these machine-learning methods can assist with efforts to maximize the peak proton energy, or with the more general problem of configuring the laser system to produce a proton energy spectrum with desired characteristics. Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters
A simple, portable method is described and demonstrated for generating short optical pulses (~ 1 μsec) from a continuous wave (CW) source using a rotating pinhole. A CW 633nm HeNe beam was focused onto a 225 μm diameter stainless steel pinhole, which was rotated up to 1000 Hz using an optical chopper wheel. The pulsed light was then focused onto a silicon photodetector and read by an oscilloscope. This novel setup aims to bridge the gap between pulsed laser performance and price for wide application in spectroscopy methods, industrial laser peening, and medical treatments. This will be the first publication …
