This senior project is divided into three sections that describe my path and experiences in under graduate research. The first provides an introduction to the field of particle physics and the search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) with the Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) experiment, as well as its upgrade, CUPID (CUORE Upgrade with Particle IDentification). The second section details my contributions to these experiments, including my summer working at Yale’s Wright Laboratory on R&D for the CUPID experiment. In this section I describe my work on the experiment’s muon veto system and on light detector development …

Fragmentation Functions For Light And Heavy Quarks In Simulated Proton-Proton Collisions, Nermin Kamal Sadoun
Theses and Dissertations
In the first microsecond after the Big Bang, the early universe is believed to have been in an excited state known as the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) state, a state of free quarks and gluons. Conducted experiements, like Heavy-ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), have showed some evidences of the formation of this extreme states in the collisions. Jet quenching and elliptic flow are two phenomena that provide significant evidence for the creation of QGP and its distinctive characteristics. Although the major framework for studying QGP is still heavy-ion collisions, new research …

Baryon Number Violation Search, Tyler D. Stokes
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Understanding the fundamental forces and symmetries of nature has long been a central goal of particle physics. While the Standard Model (SM) provides a successful framework, it does not guarantee the conservation of baryon number B or lepton number L, thus motivating searches for their violation. Proton decay, a fundamental process violating B, has been at the forefront of experimental searches for decades.
The discovery of the weak neutral current in 1973 unified the electromagnetic and weak forces and inspired the creation of Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) that also unify the strong force. In 1974, the first-ever GUT, …

Particle detectors are the cornerstone of experimental high energy physics. They enable physicists to study fundamental interactions and characterize subatomic particles. Recent advancements in detector technology have been propelled by the inventive integration of simulation, advanced materials, and improved electronic readouts. The primary motivation of this thesis is to advance the detector technologies to enhance sensitivity to neutrinoless double beta decay in high pressure xenon time projection chambers. Additionally, it includes work on other detector technologies, such as liquid argon time projection chambers, and documents my involvement in assembly, measurement, and simulation efforts.

Important aspects of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) factorization theorems are the properties of the objects involved that can be identified as universal. One example is that the definitions of parton densitiesand fragmentation functions for different types of hadrons differ only in the identity of the nonperturbative states that form the matrix elements, but are otherwise the same. This leads to independence of perturbativecalculations on nonperturbative details of external states. It also lends support to interpretations ofcorrelation functions as encapsulations of intrinsic nonperturbative properties. These characteristics have usually been presumed to still hold true in fragmentation functions even when the observed nonperturbative …

We measure the spin-density matrix elements (SDMEs) of the Δ⁺⁺ (1232) in the photoproduction reaction 𝛾p→π−Δ⁺⁺(1232) with the GlueX experiment in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. The measurement uses a linearly–polarized photon beam with energies from 8.2 to 8.8 GeV and the statistical precision of the SDMEs exceeds the previous measurement by three orders of magnitude for the momentum transfer squared region below 1.4 GeV². The data are sensitive to the previously undetermined relative sign between couplings in existing Regge-exchange models. Linear combinations of the extracted SDMEs allow for a decomposition into natural and unnatural–exchange amplitudes. We find that the …

Forward photoproduction of 𝜋⁺𝜋⁻ pairs with invariant mass of the order of 𝑚𝜌 ∼770 MeV is traditionally attributed to Pomeron exchange. Based on a detailed analysis of the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer photoproduction data collected at photon energies below 4 GeV, it is shown from a study of the angular moments that the dynamics of two-pion photoproduction for |𝑡|≳0.5 GeV² cannot be explained by Pomeron exchange alone. This motivates the development of a new theoretical model of two-pion photoproduction which incorporates both two-pion and pion-nucleon resonant contributions. After fitting free parameters, the model provides an excellent description of the low …

Extracting parton structure from lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations requires studying the coordinate scale 𝑧3 dependence of the matrix elements of bilocal operators. The most significant contribution comes from the 𝑧3 dependence induced by ultraviolet (UV) renormalization of the Wilson line. We demonstrate that the next-to-leading order perturbative calculations of the renormalization factor can describe, to a few percent accuracy, the logarithm of the lattice QCD rest frame matrix elements with separations up to distances of 0.6 fm on multiple lattice spacings. The residual discrepancies can be modeled by a leading effect from the structure of the nucleon.

The structure of hadronic form factors at high energies and their deviations from perturbative quantum chromodynamics provide insight on nonperturbative dynamics. Using an approach that is consistent with dispersion relations, we construct a model that simultaneously accounts for the pion wave function, gluonic exchanges, and quark Reggeization. In particular, we find that quark Reggeization can be investigated at high energies by studying scaling violation of the form factor.

Integrable Deformations, T-Dualities And Higher Order Corrections In String Theory, Parita Shah
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
This thesis explores the interplay of hidden symmetries and dualities in string theory, with a particular emphasis on the role of T-duality. As a fundamental symmetry of string theory, T-duality offers a powerful lens through which one can study integrability, solution-generating techniques, and quantum corrections, all essential aspects of modern string theoretic frameworks.
A central focus of this work is the application of the duality covariant formalism of Double Field Theory (DFT) to address problems involving integrable deformations and higher-order quantum corrections. We examine how generalized integrable models can be embedded into DFT and how the formalism captures hidden symmetries …
Exploring Electroweak Baryogenesis Within Real Scalar Models: Theoretical Foundations And Collider Phenomenology, Corine M. Smith
Exploring Electroweak Baryogenesis Within Real Scalar Models: Theoretical Foundations And Collider Phenomenology, Corine M. Smith
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The matter–antimatter asymmetry and the hierarchy problem related to the Higgs boson mass remain key open questions in high energy physics. Electroweak Baryogenesis offers a solution to the asymmetry by modifying the Higgs sector to allow a strongly first-order phase transition. This work investigates two real singlet scalar extensions of the Standard Model, incorporating novel quartic and triple couplings between the new scalar fields, providing a testable framework for vacuum-induced scalar mixing effects and enhanced multi-Higgs boson production. These interactions modify the scalar self-coupling and can induce resonant enhancements in multi-Higgs boson production processes. The theoretical constraints are derived from …

Boundary Conditions, Symmetries, And Bootstrap In 2d Conformal Field Theory, Yucong Cai
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
This dissertation contains two parts of study on the Friedan states and on the conformal bootstrap with symmetries.
The Friedan states are potential physical boundary states of the free boson. However, they exhibited a continuous spectrum in the open string sector, in contrast to more standard examples. The explicit expressions for the density of states of the Friedan states is obtained. Some pathologies and possible contradictions of these states are explored. The $g$ functions of the Friedan states are shown to be infinite, suggesting an infinite number of degrees of freedom in the theory.
The modular conformal bootstrap using the …

Coloring Trivalent Graphs: A Defect Tft Approach, Amit Kumar
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
We show that the combinatorial matter of graph coloring is, in fact, quantum in the sense of satisfying the sum over all the possible intermediate state properties of a path integral. In our case, the topological field theory (TFT) with defects gives meaning to it. This TFT has the property that when evaluated on a planar trivalent graph, it provides the number of Tait-Coloring of it. Defects can be considered as a generalization of groups. With the Klein-four group as a 1-defect condition, we reinterpret graph coloring as sections of a certain bundle, distinguishing a coloring (global-sections) from a coloring …
On Magnetic Moments Of Up And Down Quarks And Electron Neutrino Structures Composed Of Fractional Charges, Polievkt Perov
On Magnetic Moments Of Up And Down Quarks And Electron Neutrino Structures Composed Of Fractional Charges, Polievkt Perov
College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Works
Abstract
Using our models of elementary particles as spinning structures composed of fractional +-e/3 charges, we suggest a possible mechanism of the inverse-b reaction as the transfer of one +e/3 charge from its axial position in the antineutrino to the axial position in an up-quark of a proton. Such a transfer converts that up-quark into a positron, and the antineutrino becomes a down-quark after one of the antineutrino’s axial positive charges is removed from it. We will consider that a positron is a tetrahedral-like structure with three positive basic charges revolve about the axis passing through the fourth positive …

Humanity has a tendency to divide time. The past is distinct from the present which is entirely separate from the future. In supposedly 20-20 vision history is neatly divided into different sections, distinct eras with sharp lines between them. What is present and in the future is always modern. What is past is something else with another name.
Yet time is not divided so neatly. We know this living through it: years and decades blend into one another in a non-uniform progression. To divide human history into separate eras is a necessary simplification, as it helps to ascribe order onto …
Search For Physics Beyond The Standard Model In Top Quark Production With Additional Leptons In The Context Of Effective Field Theory, Furong Yan
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
The dissertation presents a search for new physics impacting top quark productions within the framework of effective field theory (EFT). Potential new physics effects are parameterized in terms of 26 dimension-six EFT operators into the event yields of six distinct top production processes in the detector level. The analysis targets multilepton final states consisting of two leptons of the same charge, three leptons and four leptons. The events are further categorized and binned in terms of kinematic distributions in order to gain sensitivity to the new physics effects. A likelihood function is formulated based on the predicted distribution in each …
Proton And Neutron As Coaxial Structures, Polievkt Perov
Proton And Neutron As Coaxial Structures, Polievkt Perov
College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Works
We suggest that a proton and a neutron are coaxial spinning structures. It is assumed that an up-quark and a down-quark composing a proton and a neutron each contain three like charges revolving about the axis where one (in the up-quark) or two (in the down-quark) basic fractional charges reside. In the case of particles with more than one charge on the axis of rotation, for example in a down-quark, the distance between the charges on the axis is determined by the requirement of zero net force on each charge on the axis. In a proton, two up-quark and one …

Abstract
As suggested in our papers [1,2], the elementary particles of the 1st generation such as an electron, quarks, and neutral particles, are all spinning composite structures made of basic elementary particles of fractional charges +- e/3. The tetrahedral structure of an electron was suggested as one of the possible composite structures of that particle. The structure consists of one positive and four negative charges of magnitude e/3, with one positive and one negative charge located on the axis of rotation and three negative charges revolving about the axis. In this paper, the form factors such as the angles …
Measurement Of The Photoproduction Cross-Section Of F1(1285) In The Exclusive Reactions Γp → P′K∓KSΠ± At 7.5 < Eγ < 11.5 Gev With Gluex At Jefferson Lab, Tyler Viducic
Physics Theses & Dissertations
The f1(1285) meson is commonly understood to belong to the axial-vector nonet as the low-mass isoscalar partner to the f1(1420) but has been suggested as a candidate for a KK∗+c.c molecule. A nearly mass-degenerate 0 −+ state has been observed in πp scattering that calls into question the established branching ratios of the f1(1285) decays. Recently, the differential cross-section for the photoproduction of f1(1285) was measured by the CLAS experiment and the results disagreed with theoretical predictions. Additionally, the CLAS experiment did not observe a mass-degenerate 0−+ state. …

Global Fits In The Supersymmetric Georgi-Machacek Model, Yingnan Xu
Physics Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we study a supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model with Higgs triplets in the scalar sector. We begin with a review of the Standard Model (SM), particularly the electroweak sector and the Higgs mechanism. In the SM, the Higgs mechanism requires the presence of a complex Higgs doublet to break the electroweak symmetry and endow particles with a mass; this process is called Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking (SSB). Although this is the simplest possibility, higher scalar representations may also contribute to the electroweak breaking process (EWSB). The extent to which these higher representations contribute to EWSB is constrained …

The ATLAS Detector is one of four different types of detectors within the Large Hadron Collider and is used to study the fundamental theories of the universe. Within the ATLAS experiment, beams of known composition and energies – otherwise known as “test beams” – are one of the many methods used to study specific physical phenomena. In this study, a test beam of muons with an energy of 160 GeV was analyzed to search for evidence of photonuclear interactions. This necessitated analyzing and filtering over 50,000 total events using specific parameters that would indicate such an event had occurred. To …
Strong First Order Electroweak Phase Transitions In The Standard Model With A Real Scalar Singlet Extension, Anthony James Hooper
Strong First Order Electroweak Phase Transitions In The Standard Model With A Real Scalar Singlet Extension, Anthony James Hooper
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
The large matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe and whether the electroweak sector has always been broken are currently unanswered by the standard model (SM). One solution that addresses both these concerns is to impose a strong first order electroweak phase transition (SFOEWPT) and ensure electroweak baryogenesis occurs. Models that undergo a SFOEWPT in the early universe create bubbles of the true vacuum that expand until the universe reaches the vacuum expectation value measured today. If the phase transition is strong enough, then these bubbles may generate a detectable stochastic gravitational wave (GW).
However, the SM by itself can only perform …

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
In nature, symmetries play an extremely significant role. Understanding the symmetries of a system can tell us important information and help us make predictions. However, these symmetries can break and form a new type of symmetry in the system. Most notably, this occurs when the system goes through a phase transition. Sometimes, a symmetry can break and produce a tear, known as a topological defect, in the system. These defects cannot be removed through a continuous transformation and can have major consequences on the system as a whole. It is helpful to know what type of defect is produced when …

By injecting an electron into the empty pie* molecular orbital (LUMO) of Amino Acids in gas phase, we measure the Vertical Attachment Energies (VAEs) for the formation of short-lived anion states of these species using electron transmission spectroscopy (ETS). Our ETS study, a first of its kind to measure the VAE for the simplest of proteins, Glycine-Glycine (Gly-Gly), is currently in progress. Based on our previous measurements for several Amino Acids including Glycine, we expect a common range of attachment energy (1.50 – 2.00 eV) for Gly-Gly.

One of the biggest challenges facing modern day nuclear physics is understanding the structure of states within the hadronic spectrum of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). We have shown this spectrum to be quite rich with hundreds of allowed states; however, if we wish to better grasp the dynamics of QCD, then it is necessary that we start investigating the internal structure of these states. This may be done by probing these states with external currents, but this requires a description of the intersection of QCD with the electroweak sector. This work acts as a stepping stone in this direction. Working to …

The axial electric potentials of neutrinos as neutral composite structures, while being very small at large distances, do not vanish, and the same can be said about the neutrino “asymmetric dipoles” (paired neutrinos of not the same kind). Depending on the orientation of the “asymmetric dipole”, its far-field electric potential in some direction can be positive or negative, interacting with other “dipoles” at that large distance attractively or repulsively depending on their mutual orientation. The mutual orientation of the dipoles locally (inside a galaxy) might be such that they are aligned and experience the attractive force toward the local center …

On examples of different beta-decay reactions, we show that the neutrino-antineutrino pairs should be added as necessary reagents to the equations of the decay reactions where a neutrino or an antineutrino is among the products of the reaction. In our models, quarks and leptons are all made of basic fractional +-e/3 charges. Transfer of basic charges between reagents forms the products of the reaction. We suggest that there is no direct conversion of u-quark to d-quark and visa versa. Each transmutation involves a transfer of basic charges from a neutrino to a quark so the structure of remaining charges in …

In our composite models of elementary particles as consisting of just two types of elementary basic charges, +e/3 and -e/3, the axial electric potential of any elementary particle is a function of a distance from the particle, and this function differs from the Coulomb potential of a point total charge of the particle. The electric potential of neutrinos is not zero at close distances from neutrinos. Neutrinos can form dipoles and bundles of 3 or more neutrinos. The three-neutrino bundle (a proto-hydrogen) can be converted to a hydrogen atom. As we suggested in our previous paper [4], the total numbers …
