COMMENTS 1. No insect problems experienced and broadleaf weeds effectively controlled by spraying. Septoria· leaf spot incidence insufficient to affect yields. 2. Little effect of time of planting on either total dry matter or grain yield. Crop received about 70% of the average May-October rainfall with a very dry September-October. Perhaps the distribution of rainfall allowed a similar pattern of water use, and total water use by each planting time. 3. There is probably a significant effect of Nitrogen regime on grain yield. (1) Yield assessments have continued similar to those used in 1977 and 1978. Essentially, plants with symptoms typical of BYDV are marked in the early spring as well as a similar number without symptoms. Yield differences were obtained both for Clipper Barley and an oats variety. (2) Two pilot experiments using viruliferous aphids were carried out at Mount Barker (79MT20) and at South Perth · (79PE13). Both Rhopalosiphum padi and R. maidis were used. Infection at Mt Barker failed, and therefore no data is presented. The Perth experiment was planted on August 31, 1979. The original plan was to have …

A brief description of weather conditions in 1977, site details and results of germination counts and growth ratings were included in the Summary Report for 1977. Drill-sown trials - Seed yields from the trials varied from good in the southern wheatbelt to very poor in the northern areas. Test samples were taken from trials 77GE32, 77GE40 and 77GE41 in the Pindar and Tardun districts, 77ME22 at Koorda and 77TS25 at Perenjori but the quantity of seed did not warrant yield assessment. Over recent years, factors such as the State's population increase, a generally higher standard of living which enables people to have more leisure time, and better roads, particularly from the Eastern States of Australia, have all contributed towards an increase in the general recreational usage of the Western Australian south coast estuaries.

To aid proper planning of facilities to cater for an increasing number of visitors in these south coast estuaries, management agencies must be able to quantify the recreational usage in this group of estuaries.

Trials in lupins this year concentrated on testing herbicide for post emergence use in lupins. Of the 20 herbicides tested 12 did not cause significant decreases in crop density and/or yield. However, weed control was often poor and the herbicide phytotoxicity tended to vary between sites. (Chapman, Badgingarra and Avondale). The Chapman and Avondale trials were not harvested because of drought. Trials in 1978 should determine if any of the herbicides tested can safely be recommended. Lupins - summary. Cereal Foliage Disease Survey A dry season reduced disease to insignificant levels (as measured by this survey) in all areas except the south west. Late rains may have produced some damage to wheat by S. nodorum however but this was probably confined to southern areas. In barley net blotch which has been declining re appeared a major disease in 1977 excepting high rainfall areas, where scald continued to be severe.
