Ccsfs/Ksc Total Lightning Warning Radii Optimization For Merlin Using Preexisting Lightning Areas, Kimberly G. Holland
Ccsfs/Ksc Total Lightning Warning Radii Optimization For Merlin Using Preexisting Lightning Areas, Kimberly G. Holland
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to optimize lightning warning radii specifications for the 45th Space Wing (45 SW), thus reducing the number of unnecessary warnings that delay ground processing needed for space launch execution at Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. This thesis sought to answer two key research questions addressing: 1) What radius reduction effectively balances both safety and operations and do reduction recommendations from previous research align with results from the new detection system? 2) What insights can be gained from comparing measurement results for seasonal lightning events as well as lightning types? This …
Behavior Of Lightning In Developing Storms, Erick A. Tello
Behavior Of Lightning In Developing Storms, Erick A. Tello
Theses and Dissertations
Air Force weather squadrons issue a warning when lightning activity is observed within 5 nautical miles (NM) of protected areas. Upon receiving this warning, personnel outdoors are expected to pause work and move inside. Studies sponsored by the 45th Weather Squadron (45 WS) have concluded that the 5 NM warning radius can be safely reduced for well-developed storms. This thesis investigates whether radii for storms in early development can also be reduced. Our research develops algorithms to partition lightning sensor data into storms. Next, storms are filtered to their earliest lightning events, and the study calculates distances between successive early …

Global temperature increases due to anthropogenic activities. The effects of rising temperature are well documented in aquatic organisms. The American oyster is an ideal shellfish species to study on global warming and oxidative DNA damage. In this study, We observed the effects of high temperature on heat shock protein-70 (HSP70), 8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), ssDNA, dsDNA, caspase-3 (CASP3), BAX and γH2AX, a molecular marker of DNA damage, protein expressions in gills of oysters. Immunohistochemical results showed that elevated temperatures (28 and 32°C) significantly increased HSP70, 8-OHdG, dsDNA, γH2AX, BAX and CASP3 protein expressions in gills of oysters compare to control (24°C). In …
Sediment Oxygen Demand And Stoichiometry Of Irl Nutrient Fluxes, Iulia Bibire
Sediment Oxygen Demand And Stoichiometry Of Irl Nutrient Fluxes, Iulia Bibire
Theses and Dissertations
Eutrophication of coastal systems has become a prominent global issue with a variety of detrimental effects, one of these being the shift in the composition of phytoplankton communities often promoting harmful algal blooms (HABs) resulting at least partially from changes to the relative abundance of N:P:Si. This study investigated nutrient fluxes from muck, a fine-grained and organic-rich sediment, and from sand to determine the importance of these sediments with regards to regulating N:P ratios in the water column. Overall sediment oxygen demand (SOD) was used as an indicator of aerobic decomposition and was found to decrease from north to south …
Physics-Constrained Hyperspectral Data Exploitation Across Diverse Atmospheric Scenarios, Nicholas M. Westing
Physics-Constrained Hyperspectral Data Exploitation Across Diverse Atmospheric Scenarios, Nicholas M. Westing
Theses and Dissertations
Hyperspectral target detection promises new operational advantages, with increasing instrument spectral resolution and robust material discrimination. Resolving surface materials requires a fast and accurate accounting of atmospheric effects to increase detection accuracy while minimizing false alarms. This dissertation investigates deep learning methods constrained by the processes governing radiative transfer to efficiently perform atmospheric compensation on data collected by long-wave infrared (LWIR) hyperspectral sensors. These compensation methods depend on generative modeling techniques and permutation invariant neural network architectures to predict LWIR spectral radiometric quantities. The compensation algorithms developed in this work were examined from the perspective of target detection performance using …
Snow-Albedo Feedback In Northern Alaska: How Vegetation Influences Snowmelt, Lucas C. Reckhaus
Snow-Albedo Feedback In Northern Alaska: How Vegetation Influences Snowmelt, Lucas C. Reckhaus
Theses and Dissertations
This paper investigates how the snow-albedo feedback mechanism of the arctic is changing in response to rising climate temperatures. Specifically, the interplay of vegetation and snowmelt, and how these two variables can be correlated. This has the potential to refine climate modelling of the spring transition season. Research was conducted at the ecoregion scale in northern Alaska from 2000 to 2020. Each ecoregion is defined by distinct topographic and ecological conditions, allowing for meaningful contrast between the patterns of spring albedo transition across surface conditions and vegetation types. The five most northerly ecoregions of Alaska are chosen as they encompass …
Using Disruptive Coloration And Ultraviolet Light To Prevent Barnacle Settlement, Kailey Nicole Richard
Using Disruptive Coloration And Ultraviolet Light To Prevent Barnacle Settlement, Kailey Nicole Richard
Theses and Dissertations
Biofouling or the accumulation of unwanted micro and macro organisms is problematic for the shipping industry. Barnacles are one of the most abundant fouling organisms and their settlement on ship hulls can result in costly damage. Several methods have been developed to prevent the formation of biofouling, including antifouling coatings and mechanical techniques, but the search for more effective and environmentally friendly solutions is still ongoing. This thesis investigated two methods aimed at barnacle prevention: color patterning and the application of ultraviolet light. The first method utilized disruptive coloration, a common mechanism observed in nature by terrestrial organisms (i.e. butterflies) …

Effects Of Seasonal Variations And Heat Exposure On Antioxidant Expression And Redox Status In The American Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica: Field And Laboratory Studies, Md Sadequr Rahman
Theses and Dissertations
Increasing atmospheric temperatures influence physiological functions in aquatic organisms. In this study, I observed the effects of seasonal (field study) and laboratory heat exposure (16, 22, 26, and 30°C for 1-week) on prooxidant-antioxidant homeostasis in gills and digestive glands of American oyster. Histological analysis showed an increase in mucus secretion with elevated temperatures in both organs. Immunohistochemical analysis showed a significant increase of heat shock protein-70, dinitrophenyl, and 3-nitrotyrosine protein expressions with higher seasonal and laboratory temperatures indicating heat-induced oxidative and nitrosative stress. This was concomitant with gradual rise in cellular apoptosis. Interestingly, catalase and superoxide dismutase expressions also increased …
Development And Assessment Of An Environmental Dna (Edna) Assay For The Rio Grande Siren And Review Of Edna Metabarcoding Applications, Krista M. Ruppert
Development And Assessment Of An Environmental Dna (Edna) Assay For The Rio Grande Siren And Review Of Edna Metabarcoding Applications, Krista M. Ruppert
Theses and Dissertations
Environmental DNA (eDNA) assays have become a major aspect of amphibian surveys in the past decade. These methods are highly sensitive, making them well-suited for monitoring rare and cryptic species. Current efforts to study the Rio Grande Siren in south Texas have been hampered due to the cryptic nature of these aquatic salamanders. Arid conditions further add to the difficulty in studying this species, as many water bodies they inhabit are ephemeral, sometimes constraining sampling efforts to a short window after heavy rain. Additionally, sirens are known to cease activity and reside underground when ponds begin to dry or as …
Organic Sediment Impacts On Seagrasses And Their Associations With Benthic Fauna, Sean Matthew Crowley
Organic Sediment Impacts On Seagrasses And Their Associations With Benthic Fauna, Sean Matthew Crowley
Theses and Dissertations
Human-population growth and rapid rates of urbanization have led to eutrophic conditions in estuaries throughout the world. Effects often include severe algal blooms, decreased dissolved oxygen levels, and the accumulation of fine-grained organic-rich sediments. One frequent negative consequence of eutrophication is the decline of seagrasses, a vital component of coastal ecosystems. Seagrasses provide shelter from predation, serve as nursery habitat, stabilize sediments, act as a sink for excess carbon, produce oxygen, and are a food source for many herbivores. Seagrasses are also sensitive to environmental changes, such as declining water quality and increased sedimentation rates. This study examines the impacts …
Analysis Of The Facilitative Interaction Between Batis Maritima And Avicennia Germinans As A Mangrove Restoration Strategy, Javier R. Navarro
Analysis Of The Facilitative Interaction Between Batis Maritima And Avicennia Germinans As A Mangrove Restoration Strategy, Javier R. Navarro
Theses and Dissertations
The multiple experiments conducted in an Avicennia germinans forest in Laguna Vista, TX was focused on determining if facilitation theory could explain the behavior observed between the herbaceous halophyte Batis maritima and A. germinans. I hypnotized that a positive interaction exists but through which mechanisms of facilitation I did not know. The overarching theme of the study is the presence or absence of B. maritima. Facilitation theory tells us that positive interactions are most often found under stressful conditions such as those on the coastal tidal flat of the Laguna Madre. Locally B. maritima has been found to …

Effects Of Artificial Substrates On The Recruitment Of Juvenile Fishes In The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Stefany Salinas
Theses and Dissertations
Most artificial reefs (ARs) in the Gulf of Mexico are considered intermediate to high vertical relief structures which have recruited large predatory species indicating lack of juvenile habitat. Small, inexpensive ARs, standard monitoring units for the recruitment of reef fish (SMURFs), were deployed at eight sites at -20m as habitat for juvenile fishes to understand and determine the effects of substrate type on juvenile fishes recruitment. Each site contained four SMURFs with four treatments: small and large rubble (~10 and ~20cm), oyster shells, and bare. Surveys yielded 39 juvenile species, including one of the most economically important species, Lutjanus campechanus, …

Theses and Dissertations
A new method for validating ionosphere models using High Frequency (HF) angle of arrival (AoA) data is presented. AoA measurements from a field campaign held at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, USA in January 2014 provide the actual elevation angle, azimuth and group delay results from 10 transmitter-receiver circuits. Simulated AoAs are calculated by ray tracing through the electron density profiles predicted from the ionosphere models hosted by NASA's Community Coordinated Modeling Center: IRI-2016, USU-GAIM, GITM, CTIPe, TIE-GCM, and SAMI3. Through the implementation of metrics including Mean Absolute Error, Prediction Efficiency, Correlation Coefficient, and others, we are able to …
Next-Generation Air Force Weather Metrics Via Bayes Cost Analysis, Brandon M. Bailey
Next-Generation Air Force Weather Metrics Via Bayes Cost Analysis, Brandon M. Bailey
Theses and Dissertations
This research proposes a new methodology for U.S. Air Force weather forecast metrics. Military weather forecasters are essentially statistical classifiers. They categorize future conditions into an operationally relevant category based on current data, much like an Artificial Neural Net or Logistic Regression model. There is extensive literature on statistically-based metrics for these types of classifiers. Additionally, in the U.S. Air Force, forecast errors (errors in classification) have quantifiable operational costs and benefits associated with incorrect or correct classification decisions. There is a methodology in the literature, Bayes Cost, which provides a structure for creating statistically rigorous metrics for classification decisions …
Detection Of Reconnection Signatures In Solar Flares, Taylor R. Whitney
Detection Of Reconnection Signatures In Solar Flares, Taylor R. Whitney
Theses and Dissertations
Solar flare forecasting is limited by the current understanding of mechanisms that govern magnetic reconnection, the main physical phenomenon associated with these events. As a result, forecasting relies mainly on climatological correlations to historical events rather than the underlying physics principles. Solar physics models place the neutral point of the reconnection event in the solar corona. Correspondingly, studies of photospheric magnetic fields indicate changes during solar flares -- particularly in relation to the field helicity -- on the solar surface as a result of the associated magnetic reconnection. This study utilizes data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) Helioseismic and …
Determining Bulk Aerosol Absorption From Off Axis Backscattering Using Rayleigh Beacon Laser Pulses, Julie C. Grossnickle
Determining Bulk Aerosol Absorption From Off Axis Backscattering Using Rayleigh Beacon Laser Pulses, Julie C. Grossnickle
Theses and Dissertations
Aerosol absorption and scattering can play a key role in degrading high energy laser performance in the form of thermal blooming and beam attenuation. Aerosol absorption properties are not completely understood, and thus affect how we are able to quantify expected high energy laser weapon performance. The Air Force Institute of Technology Center for Directed Energy (AFIT CDE) developed both Laser Environmental Effects Definition and Reference (LEEDR) and the High Energy Laser End-to-End Operational Simulation (HELEEOS) code to characterize atmospheric radiative transfer effects and evaluate expected directed energy weapon system performance. These packages enable modeling of total irradiance at given …

Modulation Of Lightning Occurrence By The Solar Wind, Adam L. Baxter
Theses and Dissertations
Lightning affects military and civilian operations. Characterization of the distribution of global lightning strikes of two detection networks based on solar wind events is analyzed. the median analysis by latitude gave different results for the two network datasets. The KLD pulled out some common features such as the seasonal dependence and a general increase in lightning at the equator. Comparisons between different datasets must be handled carefully. the KLD method may be a way to capture common features, or assess how similar the datasets are. A detailed analysis of the differences between the tow networks detection algorithms and investigating other …
A Method For Routine Pm2.5 Obsercation And Incorporation Into Numerical Weather Prediction, Daniel B. Jagoda
A Method For Routine Pm2.5 Obsercation And Incorporation Into Numerical Weather Prediction, Daniel B. Jagoda
Theses and Dissertations
Operational numerical weather prediction (NWP) simulates aerosol abundance using climatic emission inventories due to a lack of available real-time observation. An advocation to monitor aerosol number concentration with a standardized global sensor network is defended. A comparison between observations from the existing network “PurpleAir” and condensation particle counters (CPC) reveals the necessity of regulated instrumentation when measuring aerosol number concentration. NWP initialization by the Goddard Chemistry Aerosol Radiation and Transport (GOCART) module is capable of augmentation by hourly aerosol observation. The disparity between observed in-situ particulate matter smaller than 2.5-μm in diameter (PM2.5) and Weather Research and Forecasting …

Characterizing Regime-Based Flow Uncertainty, John L. Fioretti
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this work is to develop a regime-based quantification of horizontal wind field uncertainty utilizing a global ensemble numerical weather prediction model. In this case, the Global Ensemble Forecast System Reforecast (GEFSR) data is utilized. The machine learning algorithm that is employed is the mini-batch K-means clustering algorithm. 850 hPa Horizontal flow fields are clustered and the forecast uncertainty in these flow fields is calculated for different forecast times for regions across the globe. This provides end-users quantified flow-based forecast uncertainty.
Localized Effects Of Hurricane Michael (2018) On Total Electron Content, Joanna E.S. Williams
Localized Effects Of Hurricane Michael (2018) On Total Electron Content, Joanna E.S. Williams
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding the connection between terrestrial and space environments is an emerging field of study that can significantly improve operational weather forecasting. In particular, it is well known that tropical cyclones (TCs) and thunderstorms can initiate gravity waves that generate fluctuations in the total electron content (TEC) of the ionosphere. These perturbations can deteriorate and delay the transmission of high-frequency (HF) communications, such as emergency services, amateur radio, and aviation. This study investigates changes in TEC according to the number of lightning ashes and the rainfall rates associated with Hurricane Michael (2018). A composite analysis will be performed using the GOES …
Simulation Of Sporadic-E Parameters Using Phase Screen Method, Daniel W. Stambovsky
Simulation Of Sporadic-E Parameters Using Phase Screen Method, Daniel W. Stambovsky
Theses and Dissertations
A phase screen simulation experiment is designed and implemented to model radio occultation through sporadic-E ionospheric disturbances between a GPS transmitter operating at the L1 frequency and a second receiving satellite in low earth orbit (LEO). Simulations were made to test the linear relationship between plasma intensity and scintillation S4 index both posited (Arras and Wickert, 2018) and contended (Gooch et al., 2020) in previous literature. Results brought into question both the linear relationship and the use of S4 as a whole and an alternate metric was sought.

Theses and Dissertations
Black mangrove (Avicennia germinans) in south Texas provide ecosystem services and benefits to humans including: habitat for wildlife, prevention of coastline erosion, and mitigation of natural disasters. One step to preserve their ecological functions is to identify and protect the source of their nitrogen (N). Nitrogen stable isotopes were sampled for one year beginning August 2018 and used as tracers to identify how mangroves obtain N. Total N in (A. germinans) and associated (Batis maritima) (plants) (2.1%) was more abundant than in cyanobacteria (0.6%) and sediment (0.1%). Plant d15N signatures (5.52‰) were more similar to sediment (5.21‰) than cyanobacteria (1.98‰), …

Gut Content Analysis Of Benthic Foraging Fish Compared To Invertebrate Infauna Distributions In Dredged Vs. Undredged Habitats, Danielle Louise Juzwick
Theses and Dissertations
The Indian River Lagoon (IRL) has experienced a loss in seagrasses due to organic sediment accumulation and harmful algal blooms. Seagrasses are an essential nursery habitat for many fishes and benthic invertebrates. IRL fish known to utilize benthic habitat and feed on invertebrates include Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulates), juvenile Red Drum (Sciaenops ocellatus), and Mojarra (Eucinostomus spp.). The most abundant major infaunal taxa of the IRL are crustaceans, polychaetes, and mollusks. Environmental dredging in the IRL’s Turkey Creek is intended to improve water quality, remove harmful sediments and restore benthic habitat. Such dredging may impact benthic invertebrate populations and, indirectly, …
The Role Of Sediment Resuspension In Estuarine Inorganic Nutrient Cycling, Kirsten Jo Ayres
The Role Of Sediment Resuspension In Estuarine Inorganic Nutrient Cycling, Kirsten Jo Ayres
Theses and Dissertations
Time-scaling of estuarine inorganic nitrogen cycling contains many assumptions due to biogeochemical interactions. Nitrogen, often a limiting factor for primary production, is transformed and utilized by many estuarine organisms. Inorganic nitrogen is especially high in porewater. High nutrient pore water, contained within the interstitial spaces of sediment, has been assumed to influx high concentrations of inorganic nutrients into surface waters during resuspension events. These short-term resuspension events rapidly introducing high concentration of nutrients into the water column. In order to determine the internal time scale of inorganic nitrogen cycling, a box-model nutrient budget, horizontal in situ transects, and vertical nutrient …

A Sinking Feeling: The Fate Of Concrete Pyramids Deployed In Artificial Reefs In The Texas Gulf Of Mexico, Cameron J. Moody
Theses and Dissertations
The deployment of 2,611 concrete pyramids in Texas gulf waters represents a significant undertaking. In collaboration with Texas Parks and Wildlife, bathymetric sidescan data was collected at three reefs hit by Hurricane Harvey from 2017 to 2019. All reefs lost significant pyramid height between 2017 and 2019. The pyramids demonstrated greater subsidence in the year when Harvey occurred and minimal subsidence the following year. Pyramids that moved outside the reefs were due to hurricane forces and shrimp trawl activity. Pyramids that remained inside the reef remained at their deployment location for two reefs. The pyramids remaining in the third reef …
Dna Barcoding Reveals Unexpected Diversity In Octocorallia In The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Chelsea L. Pavliska
Dna Barcoding Reveals Unexpected Diversity In Octocorallia In The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Chelsea L. Pavliska
Theses and Dissertations
Coral reefs are an integral tier of marine ecosystems. They provide habitat and foraging opportunities for many ecologically and economically important fishes. Protection of coral reef biodiversity and connectivity is imperative to the continued health and sustainability of marine fisheries. Mesophotic reefs, such as those found in the northwest Gulf of Mexico, have unique coral communities because of the limited light penetration at mesophotic depths (30 – 150m). Because there is limited knowledge in regards to the biodiversity of coral reefs of the northwestern Gulf of Mexico (GOM), particularly the South Texas Banks (STBs), thesis work presented here aims to …
