An Analysis Of The Formation And Evolution Of The 1989 Western North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, Brian Andrew Crandall
An Analysis Of The Formation And Evolution Of The 1989 Western North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, Brian Andrew Crandall
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This thesis conducts an observational study of a large cyclonic gyre that developed in the Western North Pacific (WNP) in late July 1989. For a period of six days, azimuthally-averaged winds at 850 hPa remained cyclonic out from the center of circulation to the 2000 km radius, with azimuthally-averaged tangential wind speeds at or greater than 10 m s-1. The gyre exhibited an asymmetric convection pattern, with the center, north and west flanks devoid of large convective areas, but the southern and eastern flanks maintained large-scale convective regions, extending as much as 4000 km in longitude.
An Application Of Camx Process Analysis Tools : Exploring Process Contributions To Extreme Ozone, Nitrogen Oxides And Sulfur Dioxide, David-Anthony Murray
An Application Of Camx Process Analysis Tools : Exploring Process Contributions To Extreme Ozone, Nitrogen Oxides And Sulfur Dioxide, David-Anthony Murray
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The University at Albany Air Quality Forecasting Modeling System (AQFMS) is a state-of-the-art model that generates reliable daily and "day-ahead" air quality forecasts for the Northeastern United States. The three major categories of processes which dictate regional air quality are production from emission sources, horizontal and vertical transport driven by the prevailing meteorology, and chemical transformations. The Advanced Research WRF (ARW) produces meteorological fields. The Sparse Matrix Operator for Kernel Emissions (SMOKE) processes available emission inventories for air quality modeling. The Comprehensive Air Quality Model with extension (CAMx) handles both chemical processes and the integration of ARW-WRF and SMOKE in …
Analysis Of Intraseasonal Convective Variability Modes Over West Africa During The Monsoon Season, Jeffrey Ceratto
Analysis Of Intraseasonal Convective Variability Modes Over West Africa During The Monsoon Season, Jeffrey Ceratto
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Intraseasonal variability of rainfall within the West African Monsoon has been shown to be an important factor in the weather of this region. Multiple factors have been found to contribute to variability at this timescale. Mounier, et al (2008) use EOF analysis to uncover and describe a quasi-stationary dipole of precipitation between the West African Monsoon system and the West Atlantic/Caribbean Sea. This mode, termed the Quasi Biweekly Zonal Dipole mode, operates on timescales of roughly 13 days. The stationary nature of this dipole is focused upon in their work, while the role of Kelvin waves in the mode are …
Remote Sensing Of Cloud Properties Using Oxygen A-Band Spectral Measurements, Siwei Li
Remote Sensing Of Cloud Properties Using Oxygen A-Band Spectral Measurements, Siwei Li
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Clouds play an important role in the climate system through their radiative effects and their vital link in the hydrological cycle. Detailed knowledge of the three dimensional (3-D) distribution of cloud macrophysical and microphysical properties is crucial to properly characterize radiative forcing by clouds and to quantify the response of the climate. In this study, a multi-layer cloud detection algorithm is developed by utilizing photon path length distributions retrieved from oxygen A-band spectral measurements. Case studies from measurements at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Southern Great Plains (SGP) site demonstrate that this photon path length method can detect multi-layer clouds …
The Association Of Summer Temperatures With Hospital Admissions For Renal Diseases In New York State : A Case-Crossover Study, Barbara A. Fletcher
The Association Of Summer Temperatures With Hospital Admissions For Renal Diseases In New York State : A Case-Crossover Study, Barbara A. Fletcher
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study assessed the association between high temperatures and increased odds of hospitalization for renal diseases which, to date, has been examined in only a small number of studies. A case-crossover design was used to study 147,885 hospital admissions with renal diagnoses during July and August, 1991-2004 in New York State. Regional temperature, humidity and barometric pressure data from automated monitors were used as exposure indicators. Using time-stratified referent selection and conditional logistic regression analysis, an overall 9% increase in odds of hospitalization for acute renal failure per 5°F (2.78°C) was found for mean temperature at a one day lag …
Convectively-Coupled Kelvin Waves Over The Tropical Atlantic And African Regions And Their Influence On Atlantic Tropical Cyclogenesis, Michael John Ventrice
Convectively-Coupled Kelvin Waves Over The Tropical Atlantic And African Regions And Their Influence On Atlantic Tropical Cyclogenesis, Michael John Ventrice
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
High-amplitude convectively coupled atmospheric Kelvin waves (CCKWs) are explored over the tropical Atlantic during the boreal summer. Atlantic tropical cyclogenesis is found to be more frequent during the passage of the convectively active phase of the CCKW, and most frequent two days after its passage. CCKWs impact convection within the mean latitude of the inter-tropical convergence zone over the northern tropical Atlantic. In addition to convection, CCKWs also impact the large scale environment that favors Atlantic tropical cyclogenesis (i.e., deep vertical wind shear, moisture, and low-level relative vorticity).
Assessing The Reproducibility Of Coral Oxygen And Carbon Isotope Time Series From Fiji And Tonga And Their Application To The Reconstruction Of South Pacific Convergence Zone Movements Since The Mid-1800s, Emilie Pauline Dassie
Assessing The Reproducibility Of Coral Oxygen And Carbon Isotope Time Series From Fiji And Tonga And Their Application To The Reconstruction Of South Pacific Convergence Zone Movements Since The Mid-1800s, Emilie Pauline Dassie
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
A major feature affecting the hydrology of the southern hemisphere is the South Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ); a band of high rainfall extending southeastward from the Western Pacific Warm Pool (WPWP). It is a key source of atmospheric water vapor and latent heating. While it is clear that the SPCZ plays a fundamental role in Earth's climate, little is known about the patterns and mechanisms responsible for interannual to century-scale changes in its position and how it may respond to global climate change.

Multiscale Analyses Of Inland Tropical Cylcone--Midlatitude Jet Interactions : Camille (1969) And Danny (1997), Matthew S. Potter
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
TC Camille (1969) and TC Danny (1997) both interacted with the equatorward entrance region of an upper-tropospheric jet as they traversed the Appalachian Mountains; however, their societal impacts differed. During the 12-h period starting 0000 UTC 20 August 1969, 690 mm of rain fell over Massies Mill, Virginia, as TC Camille traversed the central Appalachian Mountains. On 24 July 1997, TC Danny underwent inland reintensification while moving across the Carolinas. TC Danny's minimum central mean sea level pressure decreased from 1012 hPa to 1000 hPa and its maximum sustained wind speed increased from 20 kt to 40 kt during the …
Large-Scale Influences On The Pre-Genesis Of Tropical Cyclone Karl (2010), Kyle S. Griffin
Large-Scale Influences On The Pre-Genesis Of Tropical Cyclone Karl (2010), Kyle S. Griffin
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The genesis of Tropical Cyclone (TC) Karl (2010) in September 2010 provided a unique opportunity to examine the continuing problem of understanding tropical cyclogenesis. The precursor disturbance to Karl originated from a cluster of showers east of the Windward Islands and was well sampled by ongoing field campaigns, particularly the PRE-Depression Investigation of Cloud-systems in the Tropics (PREDICT), as the targeted disturbance progressed westward. While traditional genesis theories focusing on moisture and mass fields (e.g. top-down showerhead method) can explain the initial spin-up of the disturbance several days prior to its official genesis, additional perspectives are examined in concert with …
Rainfall And Streamflow Variability In Ghana, Michael Mawutor Tanu
Rainfall And Streamflow Variability In Ghana, Michael Mawutor Tanu
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The objective of this research is to investigate the variability of rainfall and streamflow over Ghana. Analyses of rainfall shows larger daily variability and maxima amounts in the southern coastal belt than in either the middle or northern parts of the country. The high variability in rainfall at the coast is associated with sea surface temperatures (SSTs) changes over the Guinea coast. This is related to the evolution of the cold tongue over the Atlantic during the rainfall season. The results indicate that the extreme rainfall events occur as single events, but there are occasions when they occur sequentially, and …
Detailed Modeling Of Soot Size Distribution Evolution And Pollutant Formation Inside Aircraft And Diesel Engines, Chowdhury Golam Moniruzzaman
Detailed Modeling Of Soot Size Distribution Evolution And Pollutant Formation Inside Aircraft And Diesel Engines, Chowdhury Golam Moniruzzaman
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Combustion emission of soot and pollutant gas species contributes to poor regional air quality near emission sources and to climate change. It is important to understand the formation mechanism and time evolution of these pollutants inside the combustion engine, through detailed modeling of combustion chemistry and microphysics as well as comparison with observation. In this thesis, two multi-zone gas parcel combustion engine models, one for aircraft engines and another for diesel engines, have been developed to study soot size distribution evolution and pollutant formation inside the engines as well as emissions. The models take into account size-resolved (sectional) soot aerosol …
Synoptic And Mesoscale Aspects Of Ice Storms In The Northeastern U.S, Christopher Castellano
Synoptic And Mesoscale Aspects Of Ice Storms In The Northeastern U.S, Christopher Castellano
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Ice storms are among the most hazardous, disruptive, and costly meteorological phenomena in the northeastern United States. The accretion of freezing rain during ice storms endangers human safety, compromises public infrastructure, and causes economic losses on local and regional scales. Furthermore, ice storms present a major operational forecast challenge due to the combined influence of synoptic, mesoscale, and microphysical processes on precipitation type. In consideration of these socioeconomic impacts and forecast issues, we have identified three primary objectives for this thesis: 1) create long-term climatologies of freezing rain and ice storms in the northeastern U.S., 2) identify antecedent environments conducive …
Appalachian Lee Troughs And Their Association With Severe Convective Storms, Daniel Thompson
Appalachian Lee Troughs And Their Association With Severe Convective Storms, Daniel Thompson
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Forecasting convective storms in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. (hereafter mid-Atlantic) is important because of the proximity of the convective initiation region to major East Coast cities. These forecasts can be challenging because of the weak synoptic-scale forcing for ascent and abundant convective instability typical of the mid-Atlantic warm season (May-September). As a result, mesoscale boundaries such as the Appalachian lee trough (ALT) play an important role in initiating convective storms. This thesis examines the association between ALTs and warm-season severe convective storms in the mid-Atlantic in order to understand how ALTs modulate the frequency and distribution of severe …
Evaluation Of Suny Satellite-To-Irradiance Model Performance Using Ecmwf Gems Daily Aerosol Optical Depth Reanalysis Data, Kyle Frederick Itterly
Evaluation Of Suny Satellite-To-Irradiance Model Performance Using Ecmwf Gems Daily Aerosol Optical Depth Reanalysis Data, Kyle Frederick Itterly
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The current version of the State University of New York (SUNY) radiative transfer model (RTM) uses climatological monthly averages derived from a National Renewable Energy Labs (NREL) gridded dataset to parameterize aerosol optical depth (AOD), water vapor and ozone. This is mostly due to the limited availability of high spatially and temporally resolved observations. Several global chemical transport models are analyzed and compared in depth to determine which daily AOD dataset should be implemented into the SUNY Model. After thorough comparison, the chemical transport model chosen was the Global and regional Earth-system Monitoring using satellite and in-situ data (GEMS) model …
Tropical-Extratropical Interactions And Arctic-Extratropical Interactions Conducive To Intraseasonal Variability Of The North Pacific Jet Stream, Jason Michael Cordeira
Tropical-Extratropical Interactions And Arctic-Extratropical Interactions Conducive To Intraseasonal Variability Of The North Pacific Jet Stream, Jason Michael Cordeira
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The autumnal spin up of the Northern Hemisphere (NH) general circulation is characterized by intraseasonal variability in the structure of the North Pacific jet stream (NPJ). The variability in the structure of the NPJ is often associated with large-scale flow reconfigurations over the North Pacific and North America and changes in the NH zonal available potential energy (AZ). This dissertation investigates variability in the structure of the NPJ and the NH AZ in conjunction with tropical-extratropical interactions (TEIs) and arctic-extratropical interactions (AEIs). The former are investigated in association with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, the Madden-Julian Oscillation, and western North Pacific …
Review Of The Simulation Of The Precis Regional Climate Model Over Tropical South America Using Gcm And Reanalysis Lateral Boundary Conditions, Dana Mcglone
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
High-resolution regional climate models (RCM) run over a limited domain are increasingly used to simulate seasonal to interannual climate variability over South America and to assess the spatiotemporal impact of future climate change under a variety of emission scenarios. Global climate models (GCM) are often too coarse to resolve local circulations and the topography of the Andes, leading to problems with simulation of temperature and precipitation patterns throughout the domain. A RCM model can also better represent the climate at a regional scale; however, they are subject to errors introduced by the driving global models. For this study, the Hadley …
Significance Of Hno3 Acid Photolysis On Surfaces In Tropospheric Chemistry, Honglian Gao
Significance Of Hno3 Acid Photolysis On Surfaces In Tropospheric Chemistry, Honglian Gao
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The reactive nitrogen trace gases (NOy) including nitrogen oxides (NOx) and their secondary products are known to cause ground-level ozone pollution, photochemical smog, acid deposition, and overall air quality degradation. NOx was believed to be permanently removed from the atmospheric by HNO3 formation and deposition. However, our laboratory experimental results show that HNO3 can be remobilized back to photochemically labile HONO and NOx (re-NOx-ification). We have verified and quantified HONO and NOx production from the photolysis of HNO3 on various surfaces, including Pyrex, leaves of plants, and other environmentally relevant …
Easterly Waves And Tropical Cyclogenesis In The Caribbean, Kay Louise Shelton
Easterly Waves And Tropical Cyclogenesis In The Caribbean, Kay Louise Shelton
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This thesis is concerned with the evolution of easterly waves in the Atlantic and Caribbean and their relationship to tropical cyclogenesis. Motivation for this study is the apparent "genesis hole" in the eastern Caribbean and the lack of knowledge regarding the evolution of the transient disturbances passing through this region. The environment of the Caribbean is reviewed revealing large vertical wind shear and dry mid-levels as the key factors determining the presence of the genesis hole.
Biogeographic Consequences Of Historic And Contemporary Climate Change In Boreal Forest Birds, Joel Ralston
Biogeographic Consequences Of Historic And Contemporary Climate Change In Boreal Forest Birds, Joel Ralston
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In this dissertation, I combine ecological niche models (ENMs), which can be extrapolated through time to predict historic and future changes in species distributions, with mitochondrial and nuclear genetic markers to study the biogeographic consequences of historic and contemporary climate change on boreal forest birds, and in particular Blackpoll Warbler.
The Influence Of The Great Lakes On Mcs Formation And Development In The Warm Season, Alan Frederick Srock
The Influence Of The Great Lakes On Mcs Formation And Development In The Warm Season, Alan Frederick Srock
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study focuses on how near-surface thermal boundaries that form near the Great Lakes during the warm season can contribute to the formation of mesoscale convective systems (MCSs). Differential heating across land-water interfaces can create a cold dome of air over the lake; convection may develop when the relatively-cold dome of air becomes deep enough to enable air parcels that intersect these boundaries to reach their level of free convection. A radar-based climatology of MCS events surrounding the Great Lakes for 2002-2005 showed that MCSs frequently form in the vicinity of the Great Lakes. Composites of MCS events over the …
Northeast United States Heat Waves : A Statistical Analysis And Synoptic Climatology, Scott Cooper Runyon
Northeast United States Heat Waves : A Statistical Analysis And Synoptic Climatology, Scott Cooper Runyon
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The results of a statistical analysis of anomalously hot day and heat wave frequency in the United States (U.S.) are presented, along with a synoptic climatology of northeast U.S. heat waves (NHWs) for 1948-2001. This study used daily high temperatures retrieved from the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) Daily Surface Dataset for 54 stations binned into the nine standard NCDC climate regions. Anomalously hot days were defined as when the daily high temperature exceeded the climatological 97.5-percentile temperature. Heat waves were defined as at least three consecutive anomalously hot days, whereas regional heat waves (e.g., NHWs) were defined as simultaneous …
The Downstream Extratropical Flow Response To Recurving Western North Pacific Tropical Cyclones, Heather M. Archambault
The Downstream Extratropical Flow Response To Recurving Western North Pacific Tropical Cyclones, Heather M. Archambault
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The factors that govern the downstream flow response to recurving western North Pacific (WNP) tropical cyclones (TCs) are investigated from climatological, composite analysis, case study, and predictability perspectives. A 1979–2009 climatology of WNP TC recurvature indicates that TC recurvature is followed by a four-day period of above-normal North Pacific meridional flow. The relationship between TC recurvature and above-normal North Pacific meridional flow is found to be stronger in late summer through mid-fall than in early summer and early winter, and stronger for TCs that interact strongly with the jet stream than for TCs that interact weakly with the jet stream. …
Origin And Maintenance Of The Stable Boundary Layer In A Patchy Landscape, Luiz Eduardo Medeiros
Origin And Maintenance Of The Stable Boundary Layer In A Patchy Landscape, Luiz Eduardo Medeiros
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Field observations made in Hudson Valley region, NY during the Hudson Valley Ambient Meteorology Study (HVAMS) are analyzed to examine how terrain and land cover influence nocturnal mixing in real-world landscapes. Important terrain features such as local topographic concavity and site sheltering are shown to exhibit systematic influence on turbulent intermittency and on the consequent nocturnal heat and momentum fluxes. Very local obstacles have their most important effects on mixing during strong winds (> 5m/s). Local terrain concavity was found to be the more important factor influencing surface fluxes than sheltering for all classes of winds.
Western Equatorial Pacific Climate Variability From Restricted Basins : Century Scale Changes In Kau Bay To Glacial-Interglacial Changes In The Sulu Sea, Samantha Langton
Western Equatorial Pacific Climate Variability From Restricted Basins : Century Scale Changes In Kau Bay To Glacial-Interglacial Changes In The Sulu Sea, Samantha Langton
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The surface ocean in the western equatorial Pacific contains some of the warmest water on the planet in the western Pacific warm pool (WPWP). Changes in the size and scope of the warm pool have a significant impact on global climate. With the concern of changes in the extent of this body of water as a result of anthropomorphic changes in atmospheric composition, it is vital to investigate prior changes to the WPWP, the causes of such changes, and resultant effects. For my dissertation, I used several proxies to analyze sediments from Kau Bay and the Sulu Sea in Indonesia …
Persistence And Dissipation Of Lake Michigan-Crossing Mesoscale Convective Systems, Nicholas Metz
Persistence And Dissipation Of Lake Michigan-Crossing Mesoscale Convective Systems, Nicholas Metz
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This thesis investigates mature mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) that traversed Lake Michigan to elucidate synoptic-scale and Lake Michigan-related features that discriminate between persistence and dissipation. Of the 110 coherent MCSs that crossed Lake Michigan during the warm seasons (April–September) of 2002–2007, 47 (43%) persisted, while 63 (57%) dissipated. Persistence was favored during July and August, when Lake Michigan was warmer and during the evening and overnight, when the low-level jet (LLJ) was most intense. However, a number of MCSs also persisted during the early warm season when the Lake Michigan water temperature was cooler than the surrounding land.
A Spline Kernel Based Smoothing Algorithm : A Comparison Of Methods With A Spatiotemporal Application To Global Climate Fluctuations, Derek Daniel Cyr
A Spline Kernel Based Smoothing Algorithm : A Comparison Of Methods With A Spatiotemporal Application To Global Climate Fluctuations, Derek Daniel Cyr
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In statistics, smoothing is a technique that attempts to capture the key patterns or trends in data while leaving out the noise that is obscuring them. Nonparametric techniques are well-suited for smoothing as they do not rely on assumptions that the data arise from a given probability distribution.
Retrieval Of Atmospheric Elemental Carbon Records Using Lake Sediments : Implications In Radiative Forcing, Tanveer Ahmed
Retrieval Of Atmospheric Elemental Carbon Records Using Lake Sediments : Implications In Radiative Forcing, Tanveer Ahmed
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Elemental or black carbon (EC or BC) aerosols produced during incomplete combustion strongly absorb solar radiation and contribute to global warming, and cause cardiopulmonary disease. Long-term atmospheric EC measurements, [EC]atm, are needed to validate global climate models to estimate the impact of EC on earth's temperature. Such data is sparse.
Assessing Replicated Coral Trace Element (Sr/Ca And Mg/Ca) Variability And Skeletal Growth Records From The Tropical Pacific, Henry Chun-Yi Wu
Assessing Replicated Coral Trace Element (Sr/Ca And Mg/Ca) Variability And Skeletal Growth Records From The Tropical Pacific, Henry Chun-Yi Wu
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
To gain a more complete history and understanding of the full amplitude of climate variability prior to instrumental records, science must rely on natural proxy archives that are sensitive to fluctuations in key climate parameters. Calcium carbonate skeletons of long-living hermatypic corals in some locations have been shown to be natural archives of surface ocean variability. This study investigated the fidelity and reproducibility of coral derived Sr/Ca time series from Clipperton Atoll, Fiji, and Tonga as accurate proxies of sea surface temperature (SST). The replicated high-resolution Sr/Ca time series record monthly and bimonthly SST changes, though with a greater magnitude …
Effect Of Noise In Principal Component Analysis With An Application To Ozone Pollution, Katerina G. Tsakiri
Effect Of Noise In Principal Component Analysis With An Application To Ozone Pollution, Katerina G. Tsakiri
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This thesis analyzes the effect of independent noise in principal components of k normally distributed random variables defined by a covariance matrix. We prove that the principal components as well as the canonical variate pairs determined from joint distribution of original sample affected by noise can be essentially different in comparison with those determined from the original sample. However when the differences between the eigenvalues of the original covariance matrix are sufficiently large compared to the level of the noise, the effect of noise in principal components and canonical variate pairs proved to be negligible. The theoretical results are supported …
Tropical Cyclogenesis Associated With Extratropical Precursors In The North Atlantic Basin, Thomas J. Galarneau
Tropical Cyclogenesis Associated With Extratropical Precursors In The North Atlantic Basin, Thomas J. Galarneau
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This thesis investigates genesis pathways of tropical cyclones (TCs) over the North Atlantic basin during 2004-2008 with a focus on TCs that form in conjunction with extratropical precursor disturbances. These genesis pathways are nonbaroclinic, low-level baroclinic, trough-induced, transient-trough interaction, weak tropical transition (TT), and strong TT. The transient-trough interaction, trough-induced, weak TT, and strong TT genesis pathways all occur in conjunction with extratropical precursor disturbances. This thesis will assess the physical and dynamical mechanisms relevant to TC genesis among these genesis pathways via composite and case study analyses.
