The Water and Power Resources Service is considering dredging in Black Canyon to create a larger forebay to accommodate higher peak discharges and reverse flows for proposed modifications to Hoover Dam. The Black Canyon area from Hoover Dam to Willow Beach supports a heavily utilized trout fishery and is important habitat for the razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus) and possibly bonytail chub (Gila elegans). The Water and Power Resources Service initiated this investigation to determine what effect dredging and higher peak-discharges would have on the ecology of Black Canyon.

Temporal and spatial distributions of marine cladocera in the lower Chesapeake Bay estuary were observed over a year-long sampling period. The distributions of cladoceran species throughout the Bay were studied in relation to temperature and salinity. A survey of the species over the entire Bay is included to establish distribution patterns of the various species during a short time period.

Theoretical mathematical principles were used to predict feeding abilities of the Bay species. Mouthparts are described qualitatively and quantitatively to infer function. A mandibular index developed by Itoh (1970) was revised and employed in evaluating feeding methods interspecifically and interspecifically. …

The ichthyoplankton of Hempstead Bay estuary was sampled from December 1972 to mid March 1974. Eleven stations were sampled by towing a 0.5 meter diameter plankton net. Eggs were most abundant during June and July with an average concentration calculated to be above 5,500/100m³. Egg densities were the lowest during the fall and winter. Larvae were most frequently taken from March through July with densities varying greatly among the samples. The eggs of Brevoortia tyrannus, Anchoa mitchilli, Tautoga onitis, Tautogolabrus adspersus, and Scophthalmus aguosus and the larvae of Menidia menidia, Ammodvtes hexapterus and Pseudopleuronectes americanus constituted most …

Phomopsis infection of 96 entries (replicated) was assessed just prior to harvest at seven sites - Chapman Valley Research Station (CVRS), Badgingarra Research Station (BRS), Wongan Hills Research Station (WHRS), Avondale Research Station (ARS), Mount Barker Research Station (MBRS), Esperance Downs Research Station (EDRS) and on a farmer's property at Eradu. During research in coastal marshes of the Mississippi Delta region in 1975, a large, undescribed amphipod belonging to the genus Cerapus was discovered in tidal channels. This new species, C. benthophilus, is characterized by its large size and 7-12 segmented antennal flagella. Habitat preference is muddy silt bottoms upon which it constructs conspicuous mats or "tufts" of interwoven tubes in shallow coastal bays and marshes from Louisiana to the panhandle areas of northern Florida.

The wood-rasping amphipod, Tropichelura gomezi Ortiz, 1976, is redescribed from the Florida Keys to include diagnostic characters omitted in the original description. Morphological characters and distributional patterns of T. gomezi are compared with those of the other member of the genus, Tropichelura insulae (Caiman, 1910). Laboratory studies show that T. gomezi defends its burrow entrance from other members of its species, but tolerates the presence of limnoriid isopods with which it cooccurs. A lectotype for Tropichelura insulae is designated .

COMMENTS 1. No insect problems experienced and broadleaf weeds effectively controlled by spraying. Septoria· leaf spot incidence insufficient to affect yields. 2. Little effect of time of planting on either total dry matter or grain yield. Crop received about 70% of the average May-October rainfall with a very dry September-October.
