Estimating The Height Of The Planetary Boundary Layer For Diffusion-Transport Models: A Four Algorithm Comparison, Robert L. Russ Mar 1999

Estimating The Height Of The Planetary Boundary Layer For Diffusion-Transport Models: A Four Algorithm Comparison, Robert L. Russ

Theses and Dissertations

Diffusion-Transport (D-T) modeling is a branch of numerical weather prediction concerned with eddy diffusion of particulate pollutant plumes and their transport by the wind. When conducting D-T modeling, establishing the height of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) is crucial to defining the vertical bounds within which a plume can become thoroughly mixed. The PBL can be deduced from observations or model simulation. Three sounding analysis PBL algorithms were considered - the Potential Instability Mixing Depth (PIMIX), Potential Temperature (POTEMP), and Gradient Richardson Number (RICH) algorithms. A turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) based PBL algorithm was also evaluated. The purpose of this …

A Note On Gravity Wave-Driven Volume Emission Rate Weighted Temperature Perturbations Inferred From O₂ Atmospheric And O I 5577 Airglow Observations, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D., Richard L. Walterscheid Mar 1999

A Note On Gravity Wave-Driven Volume Emission Rate Weighted Temperature Perturbations Inferred From O₂ Atmospheric And O I 5577 Airglow Observations, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D., Richard L. Walterscheid

Publications

A full-wave dynamical model and chemistry models that simulate ground-based observations of gravity wave-driven O₂ atmospheric and O I 5577 airglow fluctuations in the mesopause region are used to demonstrate that for many observable gravity waves modeling is required to infer temperature perturbation amplitudes from airglow observations. We demonstrate that the amplitude of the altitude-integrated volume emission rate weighted temperature perturbation differs by at least about 30% from the amplitude of the temperature perturbation of the major gas in the vicinity of the peak of the airglow volume emission rate for gravity waves with horizontal phase speeds less than about …

Wet Deposition In A Global Size-Dependent Aerosol Transport Model: 2. Influence Of The Scavenging Scheme On 210pb Vertical Profiles, Surface Concentrations, And Deposition, W Guelle, Y J. Balkanski, Jack E. Dibb, M Schulz, F Dulac Nov 1998

Wet Deposition In A Global Size-Dependent Aerosol Transport Model: 2. Influence Of The Scavenging Scheme On 210pb Vertical Profiles, Surface Concentrations, And Deposition, W Guelle, Y J. Balkanski, Jack E. Dibb, M Schulz, F Dulac

Earth Sciences

The main atmospheric sink for submicron aerosols is wet removal. Lead 210, the radioactive decay product of 222Rn, attaches immediately after being formed to submicron particles. Here we compare the effects of three different wet-scavenging schemes used in global aerosol simulations on the 210Pb aerosol distribution using an off-line, size-resolved, global atmospheric transport model. We highlight the merits and shortcomings of each scavenging scheme at reproducing available measurements, which include concentrations in surface air and deposition, as well as vertical profiles observed over North America and western and central North Pacific. We show that model-measurement comparison of total …

Soluble Species In Aerosol And Snow And Their Relationship At Glacier 1, Tien Shan, China, Junying Sun, Dahe Qin, Paul A. Mayewski, Jack E. Dibb, Sallie I. Whitlow, Zhongqin Lee, Qinzhao Yang Nov 1998

Soluble Species In Aerosol And Snow And Their Relationship At Glacier 1, Tien Shan, China, Junying Sun, Dahe Qin, Paul A. Mayewski, Jack E. Dibb, Sallie I. Whitlow, Zhongqin Lee, Qinzhao Yang

Earth Sciences

Simultaneous sampling of aerosol (n = 20) and snow (n = 114) was made at Glacier 1, Tien Shan, between May 19 and June 29, 1996. Similar temporal patterns of some major ion (calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, chloride, and sulfate) concentrations between snow and aerosol show that snow chemistry basically reflects changes in the chemistry of the atmosphere. This gives us confidence in the reconstruction of past atmospheric change using some snow data. There are no significant correlations between aerosol and snow samples for ammonium and nitrate. This suggests that post-depositional and/or post-collection processes may alter ammonium and nitrate concentrations …

Nitric Acid Scavenging By Mineral And Biomass Burning Aerosols, A Tabazadeh, M Z. Jacobson, H B. Singh, O Brian Toon, J S. Lin, R B. Chatfield, A N. Thakur, R. Talbot, Jack E. Dibb Nov 1998

Nitric Acid Scavenging By Mineral And Biomass Burning Aerosols, A Tabazadeh, M Z. Jacobson, H B. Singh, O Brian Toon, J S. Lin, R B. Chatfield, A N. Thakur, R. Talbot, Jack E. Dibb

Earth Sciences

The abundance of gas phase nitric acid in the upper troposphere is overestimated by global chemistry-transport models, especially during the spring and summer seasons. Recent aircraft data obtained over the central US show that mineral aerosols were abundant in the upper troposphere during spring. Chemical reactions on mineral dust may provide an important sink for nitric acid. In regions where the mineral dust abundance is low in the upper troposphere similar HNO3 removal processes may occur on biomass burning aerosols. We propose that mineral and biomass burning aerosols may provide an important global sink for gas phase nitric acid, …

Analytic Forms Of Bidirectional Reflectance Functions For Application To Earth Radiation Budget Studies, N. Manalo-Smith, G. L. Smith, S. N. Tiwari, W. F. Staylor Aug 1998

Analytic Forms Of Bidirectional Reflectance Functions For Application To Earth Radiation Budget Studies, N. Manalo-Smith, G. L. Smith, S. N. Tiwari, W. F. Staylor

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Analytic expressions for the bidirectional reflectance functions are formulated and fit to the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) operational models, which were developed using Nimbus 7 ERB data. The analytic bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (BRDFs) are based on theoretical considerations and are functions of viewing geometry and scene type. The models consist of a Rayleigh scattering term and a term for scattering due to clouds and surface. The darkness of the ocean permits the empirical determination of the Rayleigh component of scattering from the atmosphere. The models have the advantage that they are smooth in terms of view and solar …

Tropospheric Sulfate Distribution During Success: Contributions From Jet Exhaust And Surface Sources, Jack E. Dibb, R. Talbot, M Loomis May 1998

Tropospheric Sulfate Distribution During Success: Contributions From Jet Exhaust And Surface Sources, Jack E. Dibb, R. Talbot, M Loomis

Earth Sciences

The distribution of SO4= aerosol over the central US during SUCCESS indicates that surface sources of SO4= and SO2 in the western US caused SO4= enhancements up to 10 km altitude. The mean (median) SO4= mixing ratio in the mid- and upper-troposphere increased from 24 (16) pptv over the Pacific ocean to 58 (29) pptv over the central plains. Above 10 km the SO4=mixing ratio was essentially the same in both regions, and also when the geographic classifications were further partitioned into upper tropospheric and lower stratospheric categories …

Influence Of Vertical Transport On Free Tropospheric Aerosols Over The Central Usa In Springtime, R. Talbot, Jack E. Dibb, M Loomis May 1998

Influence Of Vertical Transport On Free Tropospheric Aerosols Over The Central Usa In Springtime, R. Talbot, Jack E. Dibb, M Loomis

Earth Sciences

Measurements of the atmospheric aerosol chemical composition during the Subsonic Aircraft: Contrail and Cloud Effects Special Study (SUCCESS) indicate substantial vertical transport of boundary layer aerosol to the free troposphere over the south-central United States during springtime. Mixing ratios of water-soluble aerosol Ca 2+ at 6 - 12 km altitude exhibited a median mixing ratio of 20 pptv, with 15% of the measurements > 100 pptv and a maximum of ! 235 pptv. In air parcels with enhanced Ca 2+, the ratios K+/Ca 2+, Mg2+/Ca 2+, and Na+/Ca 2+ in the bulk aerosol were distinctly characteristic of those in limestone and/or …

Relationship Between Continuous Aerosol Measurements And Firn Core Chemistry Over A 10-Year Period At The South Pole, M H. Bergin, E A. Meyerson, Jack E. Dibb, Paul A. Mayewski Apr 1998

Relationship Between Continuous Aerosol Measurements And Firn Core Chemistry Over A 10-Year Period At The South Pole, M H. Bergin, E A. Meyerson, Jack E. Dibb, Paul A. Mayewski

Earth Sciences

Before ice core chemistry can be used to estimate past atmospheric chemistry it is necessary to establish an unambiguous link between concentrations of chemical species in the air and snow. For the first time a continuous long-term record of aerosol properties (aerosol light scattering coefficient, σsp, and Ångström exponent, å) at the South Pole are compared with the chemical record from a high resolution firn core (∼10 samples per year) covering the period from 1981 to 1991. Seasonal signals in å, associated with winter minima due to coarse mode seasalt and summer maxima due to accumulation mode sulfate …

Inversion And Analysis Of Remotely Sensed Atmospheric Water Vapor Measurements At 940nm, Jack Cutler Larsen Apr 1998

Inversion And Analysis Of Remotely Sensed Atmospheric Water Vapor Measurements At 940nm, Jack Cutler Larsen

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The understanding and acceptance of remotely sensed atmospheric data depends strongly on the steps taken to characterize experiment error and validate observations through comparisons to other independent measurements. A formal error analysis of the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment II (SAGE II) water vapor operational inversion algorithm is performed and compared to previous results. Random measurement errors were characterized by segmented least-squares profile fitting of the slant path absorption which found the error to be uncorrelated in the stratosphere with estimated variances significantly smaller than expected from 18-30 km. Estimates of null space error were developed from radiosonde hygrometers in …

Full-Wave Modeling Of Small-Scale Gravity Waves Using Airborne Lidar And Observations Of The Hawaiian Airglow (Aloha-93) O(¹S) Images And Coincident Na Wind/Temperature Lidar Measurements, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D., Michael J. Taylor, Chester S. Gardner, Christian R. Gibbons

Publications

Measurements were made of mesospheric gravity waves in the OI (5577 Å) nightglow observed from Maui, Hawaii, during the Airborne Lidar and Observations of Hawaiian Airglow (ALOHA-93) campaign. Clear, monochromatic gravity waves were observed on several nights. By using a full-wave model that realistically includes the major physical processes in this region, we have simulated the propagation of four waves through the mesopause region and calculated the O(¹S) nightglow response to the waves. Mean winds derived from Na wind/temperature lidar observations were employed in the computations. Wave amplitudes were calculated based on the requirement that the observed and …

An Analytical Study Of Ozone Feedbacks On Kelvin And Rossby–Gravity Waves: Effects On The Qbo, Eugene Cordero, Terrence R. Nathan, Robert S. Echols Mar 1998

An Analytical Study Of Ozone Feedbacks On Kelvin And Rossby–Gravity Waves: Effects On The Qbo, Eugene Cordero, Terrence R. Nathan, Robert S. Echols

Faculty Publications, Meteorology and Climate Science

An equatorial beta-plane model of the middle atmosphere is used to analytically examine the effects of radiative cooling and ozone heating on the spatial and temporal evolution of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO). Under the assumption that the diabatic heating is weak and the background fields of wind, temperature, and ozone are slowly varying, a perturbation analysis yields expressions describing the vertical spatial modulation of Kelvin and Rossby–gravity waves in the presence of ozone. These expressions show that wave-induced changes in the diabatic heating arising from the advection of basic-state ozone reduce the local radiative damping rate by up to 15% …

Regression Analysis Of Radar Measured Optical Turbulence With Synoptic Scale Meteorological Variables, Diana L. Hajek Mar 1998

Regression Analysis Of Radar Measured Optical Turbulence With Synoptic Scale Meteorological Variables, Diana L. Hajek

Theses and Dissertations

A key issue to the USAF's Airborne Laser (ABL) program is the ability to accurately predict the level of optical turbulence that the ABL will encounter at its flight levels. The optical turbulence must be characterized so that the range and range variation of the ABL can be determined. Gravity wave spectra resulting from frontal or jet stream passage are presumed to cause layers of optical turbulence; however, exact relationships between optical turbulence and synoptic scale meteorological phenomena are unclear. This study assesses the statistical relationship between optical turbulence and synoptic scale variables through multiple linear regression. The optical turbulence …

Air-Snow Exchange Of Hno3 And Noy At Summit, Greenland, Jack E. Dibb, R. Talbot, J W. Munger, Daniel J. Jacob, S M. Fan Feb 1998

Air-Snow Exchange Of Hno3 And Noy At Summit, Greenland, Jack E. Dibb, R. Talbot, J W. Munger, Daniel J. Jacob, S M. Fan

Earth Sciences

Ice core records of NO3 deposition to polar glaciers could provide unrivaled information on past photochemical status and N cycling dynamics of the troposphere, if the ice core records could be inverted to yield concentrations of reactive N oxides in the atmosphere at past times. Limited previous investigations at Summit, Greenland, have suggested that this inversion may be difficult, since the levels of HNO3 and aerosol-associated NO3 over the snow are very low in comparison with those of NO3 in the snow. In addition, it appears that some fraction of the NO3 …

The Pursuit Of Isotopic And Molecular Fire Tracers In The Polar Atmosphere And Cryosphere, L A. Currie, Jack E. Dibb, G A. Klouda, B A. Benner Jr., J M. Conny, S R. Biegalski, D B. Klinedinst, D R. Cahoon, N C. Hsu Jan 1998

Earth Sciences

We present an overview of recent multidisciplinary, multi-institutional efforts to identify and date major sources of combustion aerosol in the current and paleoatmospheres. The work was stimulated, in part, by an atmospheric particle 'sample of opportunity' collected at Summit, Greenland in August 1994, that bore the 14C imprint of biomass burning. During the summer field seasons of 1995 and 1996, we collected air filter, surface snow and snowpit samples to investigate chemical and isotopic evidence of combustion particles that had been transported from distant fires. Among the chemical tracers employed for source identification are organic acids, potassium and ammonium ions, …

Distributions Of Beryllium 7 And Lead 2109, And Soluble Aerosol-Associated Ionic Species Over The Western Pacific: Pem West B, February-March 1994, Jack E. Dibb, R. Talbot, Barry Lefer, Eric Scheuer, G L. Gregory, E V. Browell, J D. Bradshaw, S T. Sandholm, H B. Singh

Earth Sciences

Aerosol sampling for the determination of the concentrations of soluble ionic species and the natural radionuclides 7Be and 210Pb was conducted from the NASA DC-8 over the western Pacific as part of GTE/PEM-West B during February-March 1994. Concentrations of most soluble ionic species in the free troposphere were higher in samples collected on flights originating from Hong Kong and Japan than those collected further east over the open ocean. In both regions the measured concentrations were higher than those found during PEM-West A (fall 1991). Activities of 210Pb, a tracer of air masses influenced by sources on …

Comparisons Of Trace Constituents From Ground Stations And The Dc-8 Aircraft During Pem-West B, Richard Arimoto, R A. Duce, J M. Prospero, D L. Savoie, R. Talbot, Jack E. Dibb, B J. Heikes, B J. Ray, N F. Lewis, U Tomza Dec 1997

Comparisons Of Trace Constituents From Ground Stations And The Dc-8 Aircraft During Pem-West B, Richard Arimoto, R A. Duce, J M. Prospero, D L. Savoie, R. Talbot, Jack E. Dibb, B J. Heikes, B J. Ray, N F. Lewis, U Tomza

Earth Sciences

Chemical data from ground stations in Asia and the North Pacific are compared with data from the DC-8 aircraft collected during the Pacific Exploratory Measurements in the Western Pacific Ocean (PEM-West B) mission. Ground station sampling took place on Hong Kong, Taiwan, Okinawa, and Cheju; and at three Pacific islands, Shemya, Midway, and Oahu. Aircraft samples were collected during 19 flights, most over the western North Pacific. Aluminum was used as an indicator of mineral aerosol, and even though the aircraft did sample Asian dust, strong dust storms were not encountered. The frequency distribution for non-sea-salt sulfate (nss SO4 …

Transport Of Sulfur Dioxide From The Asian Pacific Rim To The North Pacific Troposphere, D C. Thornton, A R. Bandy, Byrin W. Blomquist, R. Talbot, Jack E. Dibb Dec 1997

Transport Of Sulfur Dioxide From The Asian Pacific Rim To The North Pacific Troposphere, D C. Thornton, A R. Bandy, Byrin W. Blomquist, R. Talbot, Jack E. Dibb

Earth Sciences

The NASA Pacific Exploratory Mission over the Western Pacific Ocean (PEM-West B) field experiment provided an opportunity to study sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the troposphere over the western Pacific Ocean from the tropics to 60°N during February–March 1993. The large suite of chemical and physical measurements yielded a complex matrix in which to understand the distribution of sulfur dioxide over the western Pacific region. In contrast to the late summer period of Pacific Exploratory Mission-West A (PEM-West A) (1991) over this same area, SO2showed little increase with altitude, and concentrations were much lower in the free …

Bandy, R F. Pueschel

Earth Sciences

We present here the chemical composition of outflow from the Asian continent to the atmosphere over the western Pacific basin during the Pacific Exploratory Mission-West (PEM-West B) in February–March 1994. Comprehensive measurements of important tropospheric trace gases and aerosol particulate matter were performed from the NASA DC-8 airborne laboratory. Backward 5 day isentropic trajectories were used to partition the outflow from two major source regions: continental north (>20°N) and continental south (<20°N). Air parcels that had not passed over continental areas for the previous 5 days were classified as originating from an aged marine source. The trajectories and the chemistry together indicated that there was extensive rapid outflow of air parcels at altitudes below 5 km, while aged marine air was rarely encountered and only at <20°N latitude. The outflow at low altitudes had enhancements in common industrial solvent vapors such as C2Cl4, CH3CCl3, and C6H6, intermixed with the combustion emission products C2H2, C …

Earth Sciences

We report here measurements of the acidic gases nitric (HNO3), formic (HCOOH), and acetic (CH3COOH) over the western Pacific basin during the February-March 1994 Pacific Exploratory Mission-West (PEM-West B). These data were obtained aboard the NASA DC-8 research aircraft as it flew missions in the altitude range of 0.3–12.5 km over equatorial regions near Guam and then further westward encompassing the entire Pacific Rim arc. Aged marine air over the equatorial Pacific generally exhibited mixing ratios of acidic gases <100 parts per trillion by volume (pptv). Near the Asian continent, discrete plumes encountered below 6 km altitude contained up to 8 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) HNO3 and 10 ppbv HCOOH and CH3COOH. Overall there was a general correlation between mixing …

Temporal And Spatial Variability Of Snow Accumulation In Central Greenland, H Kuhns, C Davidson, Jack E. Dibb, C Stearns, M H. Bergin, J L. Jaffrezo Dec 1997

Temporal And Spatial Variability Of Snow Accumulation In Central Greenland, H Kuhns, C Davidson, Jack E. Dibb, C Stearns, M H. Bergin, J L. Jaffrezo

Earth Sciences

Snow accumulation records from central Greenland are explored to improve the understanding of the accumulation signal in Greenland ice core records. Results from a “forest” of 100 bamboo poles and automated accumulation monitors in the vicinity of Summit as well as shallow cores collected in the Summit and Crete areas are presented. Based on these accumulation data, a regression has been calculated to quantify the signal-to-noise variance ratio of ice core accumulation signals on a variety of temporal (1 week to 2 years) and spatial (20 m to 200 km) scales. Results are consistent with data obtained from year-round automated …

Assessment Of The Record Of The 1982 El Chichón Eruption As Preserved In Greenland Snow, Gregory A. Zielinski, Jack E. Dibb, Qinzhao Yang, Paul A. Mayewski, Sallie I. Whitlow, Mark S. Twickler, Mark S. Germani Dec 1997

Assessment Of The Record Of The 1982 El Chichón Eruption As Preserved In Greenland Snow, Gregory A. Zielinski, Jack E. Dibb, Qinzhao Yang, Paul A. Mayewski, Sallie I. Whitlow, Mark S. Twickler, Mark S. Germani

Earth Sciences

Variability in the SO4 2- and Cl- time series for the 1980s from 12 shallow snow pits across the Greenland ice sheet is used to evaluate the record of the 1982 El Chichón eruption and the potential for recording a moderate northern equatorial eruption in a single Greenland ice core. Composition of volcanic glass found in spring 1983 snow in one of the pits in the Summit region matches that from El Chichón glass, thereby verifying the deposition of material from the eruption. High Na+ and Cl- concentrations in this same layer probably represent deposition of the reaction products of …

Atmospheric Turbulence Scintillation Effects On Wavefront Tilt Estimation, James A. Louthain Dec 1997

Atmospheric Turbulence Scintillation Effects On Wavefront Tilt Estimation, James A. Louthain

Theses and Dissertations

A new atmospheric turbulence screen generator is developed for use in performance calculations of adaptive optics systems valid over a wide range of atmospheric turbulence parameters. The screen generator accounts for diffraction effects caused by weak turbulence and incorporates the phase, amplitude, and cross statistics of the perturbed optical field. The wavefront's phase and amplitude perturbations are taken from the correlation functions developed by Lee and Harp and the cross correlation of the phase and amplitude derived in this thesis. The screen generator uses a modal representation to perform a Fourier series expansion of the wavefront phase and amplitude over …

Air-Snow Exchange Investigations At Summit, Greenland: An Overview, Jack E. Dibb, J L. Jaffrezo

Earth Sciences

The Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) and Greenland Ice Core Project (GRIP) deep drilling programs at Summit, Greenland included support (both logistical and scientific) of extensive investigation of atmospheric transport and air-snow exchange processes of gases and particles relevant to the interpretation of the ice-core records. Much of the sampling for the air-snow exchange investigations was conducted at a unique solar-powered camp 30 km southwest of the GISP2 drill camp (even further from the GRIP camp) and was characterized by a high degree of international collaboration and cooperation. The wide range of expertise and analytical capabilities of the 20-plus …

A Validation Of The Parameterized Real-Time Ionospheric Specification Model (Prism) Version 1.7b, Shawn D. Filby Nov 1997

A Validation Of The Parameterized Real-Time Ionospheric Specification Model (Prism) Version 1.7b, Shawn D. Filby

Theses and Dissertations

The most current version of the Parameterized Real-time Ionospheric Specification Model (PRISM), version 1.7b, was validated using Digital Ionospheric Sounding System (DISS) measurements of F2 layer critical frequency (foF2) and F2 peak electron density height (hmF2) as the "ground truth." PRISM was executed, first, with no real-time input parameter and, second, with Global Positioning System (GPS) Total Electron Content (TEC) measurements as the sole real-time parameter. Hourly values of hmF2 and foF2 over 123 days in 1994-1996 (solar minimum conditions) and covering three seasons (equinox, summer solstice, and winter solstice) were compared for Wallops Island, Virginia, and Point Arguello, California, …

An Analysis Of Tropical Transport: Influence Of The Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, Eugene C. Cordero, S. Randolph Kawa, Mark R. Schoeberl

Faculty Publications, Meteorology and Climate Science

An analysis of over 4 years of Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) measurements of CH4, HF, O3, and zonal wind are used to study the influence of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) on constituent transport in the tropics. At the equator, spectral analysis of the Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE) and Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) observations reveals QBO signals in constituent and temperature fields at altitudes between 20 and 45 km. Between these altitudes, the location of the maximum QBO amplitude roughly corresponds with the location of the largest vertical gradient in the constituent field. Thus, at 40 …

An Atmospheric Sensitivity And Validation Study Of The Variable Terrain Radio Parabolic Equation Model (Vtrpe), Matthew K. Doggett Mar 1997

An Atmospheric Sensitivity And Validation Study Of The Variable Terrain Radio Parabolic Equation Model (Vtrpe), Matthew K. Doggett

Theses and Dissertations

The Variable Terrain Radio Parabolic Equation (VTRPE) computer model is a powerful and flexible program that provides calculations of the radar propagation conditions of the atmosphere. It is limited however, by the accuracy and resolution of the input data. This study quantifies the sensitivity of the VTRPE model to the accuracy and resolution of the atmospheric parameters that go into it. Also, two case studies are examined to test the utility of VTRPE in operational use. The sensitivity to measurements of pressure, temperature, and humidity was found to be dependent on the meteorological environment. In standard and subrefractive environments, average …
