Computational Investigation Of The Ionization Potential Of Lead Sulfide Quantum Dots, Jessica Beyer
Computational Investigation Of The Ionization Potential Of Lead Sulfide Quantum Dots, Jessica Beyer
Scripps Senior Theses
The purpose of this work was to determine the impact of quantum dot size on ionization potential and to determine how the presence of carbonyl-based ligands affect the ionization potential of lead sulfide quantum dot systems. Ionization potential (IP) is defined as the energy required to remove an electron from an atom, molecule, or material. IP helps scientists determine how reactive the material of interest is, which is crucial information when manufacturing nanomaterials. Accurate quantum chemical calculations of ionization potential are challenging due to the computational cost associated with the numerical solution of the Dyson equation. In this work, the …

Utilization Of Academic Support Services Among Undergraduate Students Enrolled In A Workload Mathematics Course, Online Or In-Person, Jennifer Healey
Master of Science in Mathematics
This research study examined the utilization of academic support resources, students’ sense of belonging, and achievement levels in online and in-person sections of a workload mathematics course at UC Davis. The findings indicate that there were no significant differences in the utilization of support services between the two instructional modalities, suggesting that both modes offered similar opportunities for student engagement and learning. Additionally, no significant differences were found between online and in-person students in their overall sense of belonging at UC Davis and with classmates. However, differences were observed in specific survey questions about meeting classmates outside of class to …

The Examination Of Text Anxiety, Homework Grade, Exam Grade, And Gender To DeterMine Course Success In Masters Students, Jenna Nottle
Master of Science in Mathematics
Anxiety is a feeling that almost every human has felt at some point in their life. Test anxiety is a branch of anxiety. Test anxiety is a combination of physical and motional symptoms that interfere with the ability to perform well on a test. Test anxiety can causes consequences of failure, worry about the exam itself, lack confidence in one’s own ability, and have low self-esteem. Studies have shown negative impact on test anxiety and test scores. A lot of this research done has been at the elementary level through undergraduate level in a students educational journey. However, not much …
Factors Contributing To Students Success On Algebra 1 End-Of Course Exams, Mirranda Glasgow
Factors Contributing To Students Success On Algebra 1 End-Of Course Exams, Mirranda Glasgow
Master of Science in Mathematics
High school students in the state of Ohio are required to meet or exceed a specific score on several standardized tests in different subjects in addition to meeting coursework requirements to receive a high school diploma. These tests are called end-of-course (EOC) exams. As the name implies, these exams are given at the end of a required high school course and are based on the state standards for that course. Although these tests are aligned with the standards being used to create the curriculum, many students do not reach the required score when completing the test the first time. This …
Predictors Of Student Success In A Virtual High School Math Program, Terry Barnett
Predictors Of Student Success In A Virtual High School Math Program, Terry Barnett
Master of Science in Mathematics
Before the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020, much of the research being done on virtual education was focused on the postsecondary level of instruction. With the Covid-19 pandemic forcing most school districts to offer some form of virtual instruction, the need for research at the secondary level and below had become more apparent, and much research has been done to fill in the gaps of what we know. This research project initially sought to explore the effects of synchronous versus asynchronous instruction, and how that instruction related to student success in a virtual high school mathematics program. As this author gained …
The Impact Of Offering Algebra 1 In Middle School On Student Achievement, Jessica Buran, Laura Deber
The Impact Of Offering Algebra 1 In Middle School On Student Achievement, Jessica Buran, Laura Deber
Master of Science in Mathematics
A strong background in mathematics can set students up for success in future math classes and STEM careers (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). There has been a push to offer Algebra 1 earlier to prepare students with a strong foundation in mathematics and to allow students to complete Calculus before leaving high school. However, in a district where block scheduling allows all students to complete Calculus in secondary school, does offering Algebra 1 in middle school still improve academic achievement? The main goal of this study is to see how student achievement is affected when implementing a program where advanced …
Understand The Problem Of The Haitian Data Management Using A Difference Equation : A Case Study On The Calculation Method Used By The Office Of National Identification (Oni) To Generate The List Of Voters For The General Elections Of 2015 And 2016., Jacques A. Demezier
Master of Science in Mathematics
This study put emphasis on the problem of data management facing the Haitian Government. Such a problem the researcher has addressed with a case study on the calculation method used by the National Office of Identification ( ONI). Since the age voting population deriving from the calculation method used by ONI was an accumulation of those expecting to attain the age voting at time (t+1) adding to those already reached the age voting at time (t) without being exposed to any type of constrains, the goal was to prove how that said population could not have been exempt for haven’t …
Beginner's Analysis Of Financial Stochastic Process Models, David Garcia
Beginner's Analysis Of Financial Stochastic Process Models, David Garcia
HMC Senior Theses
This thesis explores the use of geometric Brownian motion (GBM) as a financial model for predicting stock prices. The model is first introduced and its assumptions and limitations are discussed. Then, it is shown how to simulate GBM in order to predict stock price values. The performance of the GBM model is then evaluated in two different periods of time to determine whether it's accuracy has changed before and after March 23, 2020.
Multilayer Network Model Of Gender Bias And Homophily In Hierarchical Structures, Emerson Mcmullen
Multilayer Network Model Of Gender Bias And Homophily In Hierarchical Structures, Emerson Mcmullen
HMC Senior Theses
Although women have made progress in entering positions in academia and
industry, they are still underrepresented at the highest levels of leadership.
Two factors that may contribute to this leaky pipeline are gender bias,
the tendency to treat individuals differently based on the person’s gender
identity, and homophily, the tendency of people to want to be around those
who are similar to themselves. Here, we present a multilayer network model
of gender representation in professional hierarchies that incorporates these
two factors. This model builds on previous work by Clifton et al. (2019), but
the multilayer network framework allows us to …
Logistics Planning: Putting Math To Work In A Business Setting, Michael C. Hannan
Logistics Planning: Putting Math To Work In A Business Setting, Michael C. Hannan
Senior Projects Spring 2023
The optimization of business procedures benefits all aspects of the product. Maximizing efficiency can lead to more profits for the business, cheaper products for the consumer, and less fuel consumption for the environment. Tracing the history of optimization, we can see that people have always strived for the most efficient way to allocate scarce resources. However, the field of optimization did not blossom until innovations in mathematics allowed us to solve a majority of real world problems. The discovery of linear and nonlinear programming in the 1940s allowed us to optimize problems that were unsolvable before. This paper introduces how …
Partially Filled Latin Squares, Mariam Abu-Adas
Partially Filled Latin Squares, Mariam Abu-Adas
Scripps Senior Theses
In this thesis, we analyze various types of Latin squares, their solvability and embeddings. We examine the results by M. Hall, P. Hall, Ryser and Evans first, and apply our understandings to develop an algorithm that the determines the minimum possible embedding of an unsolvable Latin square. We also study Latin squares with missing diagonals in detail.
Elliptic Functions And Iterative Algorithms For Π, Eduardo Jose Evans
Elliptic Functions And Iterative Algorithms For Π, Eduardo Jose Evans
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Preliminary identities in the theory of basic hypergeometric series, or `q-series', are proven. These include q-analogues of the exponential function, which lead to a fairly simple proof of Jacobi's celebrated triple product identity due to Andrews. The Dedekind eta function is introduced and a few identities of it derived. Euler's pentagonal number theorem is shown as a special case of Ramanujan's theta function and Watson's quintuple product identity is proved in a manner given by Carlitz and Subbarao. The Jacobian theta functions are introduced as special kinds of basic hypergeometric series and various relations between them derived using the triple …

The Merchant And The Mathematician: Commerce And Accounting, Graziano Gentili, Luisa Simonutti, Daniele C. Struppa
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this article we describe the invention of double-entry bookkeeping (or partita doppiaas it was called in Italian), as a fertile intersection between mathematics and early commerce. We focus our attention on this seemingly simple technique that requires only minimal mathematical expertise, but whose discovery is clearly the result of a mathematical way of thinking, in order to make a conceptual point about the role of mathematics as the humus from which disciplines as different as operations research, computer science, and data science have evolved.
Normalization Techniques For Sequential And Graphical Data, Cole Pospisil
Normalization Techniques For Sequential And Graphical Data, Cole Pospisil
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
Normalization methods have proven to be an invaluable tool in the training of deep neural networks. In particular, Layer and Batch Normalization are commonly used to mitigate the risks of exploding and vanishing gradients. This work presents two methods which are related to these normalization techniques. The first method is Batch Normalized Preconditioning (BNP) for recurrent neural networks (RNN) and graph convolutional networks (GCN). BNP has been suggested as a technique for Fully Connected and Convolutional networks for achieving similar performance benefits to Batch Normalization by controlling the condition number of the Hessian through preconditioning on the gradients. We extend …

The picture is of the tapering Chester Shot Tower, located in Chester, England. It was built in 1799 for the manufacture of lead shot for use in the Napoleonic Wars. Molten lead was poured through a sieve at the top of the tower, with the tiny droplets forming perfect spheres during the fall; these were then cooled in a vat of water at the base. This process was less labor-intensive than an earlier method using molds. It is the oldest of the three remaining shot towers in the UK. Using the parked van at the base, estimate (i) the height …
Novel Architectures And Optimization Algorithms For Training Neural Networks And Applications, Vasily I. Zadorozhnyy
Novel Architectures And Optimization Algorithms For Training Neural Networks And Applications, Vasily I. Zadorozhnyy
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
The two main areas of Deep Learning are Unsupervised and Supervised Learning. Unsupervised Learning studies a class of data processing problems in which only descriptions of objects are known, without label information. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have become among the most widely used unsupervised neural net models. GAN combines two neural nets, generative and discriminative, that work simultaneously. We introduce a new family of discriminator loss functions that adopts a weighted sum of real and fake parts, which we call adaptive weighted loss functions. Using the gradient information, we can adaptively choose weights to train a discriminator in the direction …
Types Of Questions Teachers Ask To Engage Students In Making Sense Of A Student Contribution, Nishat B. Alam
Types Of Questions Teachers Ask To Engage Students In Making Sense Of A Student Contribution, Nishat B. Alam
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
In the student-centered classroom, a teacher’s interpretation and response to student mathematical contributions plays an important role to shape and direct students’ opportunities for sense-making. This research used a scenario-based survey questionnaire to examine what types of questions middle and high school mathematics teachers indicate they would ask to engage students in making sense of a high-leverage student mathematical contribution and their reasoning about why particular questions are or are not productive. From the results, it could be concluded that teachers asked more productive questions after seeing a set of possible questions. Their beliefs about the productivity of the questions …
