Spacetime Geometry Of Acoustics And Electromagnetism, Lucas Burns, Tatsuya Daniel, Stephon Alexander, Justin Dressel
Spacetime Geometry Of Acoustics And Electromagnetism, Lucas Burns, Tatsuya Daniel, Stephon Alexander, Justin Dressel
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Both acoustics and electromagnetism represent measurable fields in terms of dynamical potential fields. Electromagnetic force-fields form a spacetime bivector that is represented by a dynamical energy–momentum 4-vector potential field. Acoustic pressure and velocity fields form an energy–momentum density 4-vector field that is represented by a dynamical action scalar potential field. Surprisingly, standard field theory analyses of spin angular momentum based on these traditional potential representations contradict recent experiments, which motivates a careful reassessment of both theories. We analyze extensions of both theories that use the full geometric structure of spacetime to respect essential symmetries enforced by vacuum wave propagation. The …
Reducing Food Scarcity: The Benefits Of Urban Farming, S.A. Claudell, Emilio Mejia
Reducing Food Scarcity: The Benefits Of Urban Farming, S.A. Claudell, Emilio Mejia
Journal of Nonprofit Innovation
Urban farming can enhance the lives of communities and help reduce food scarcity. This paper presents a conceptual prototype of an efficient urban farming community that can be scaled for a single apartment building or an entire community across all global geoeconomics regions, including densely populated cities and rural, developing towns and communities. When deployed in coordination with smart crop choices, local farm support, and efficient transportation then the result isn’t just sustainability, but also increasing fresh produce accessibility, optimizing nutritional value, eliminating the use of ‘forever chemicals’, reducing transportation costs, and fostering global environmental benefits.

The G_2-Hitchin Component Of Triangle Groups: Dimension And Integer Points, Hannah E. Downs
The G_2-Hitchin Component Of Triangle Groups: Dimension And Integer Points, Hannah E. Downs
Doctoral Dissertations
The image of $\PSL(2,\reals)$ under the irreducible representation into $\PSL(7,\reals)$ is contained in the split real form $G_{2}^{4,3}$ of the exceptional Lie group $G_{2}$. This irreducible representation therefore gives a representation $\rho$ of a hyperbolic triangle group $\Gamma(p,q,r)$ into $G_{2}^{4,3}$, and the \textit{Hitchin component} of the representation variety $\Hom(\Gamma(p,q,r),G_{2}^{4,3})$ is the component of $\Hom(\Gamma(p,q,r),G_{2}^{4,3})$ containing $\rho$.
This thesis is in two parts: (i) we give a simple, elementary proof of a formula for the dimension of this Hitchin component, this formula having been obtained earlier in [Alessandrini et al.], \citep{Alessandrini2023}, as part of a wider investigation using Higgs bundle techniques, …

In this study, we established a connection between the Chebyshev polynomial of the first kind and the Jones polynomial of generalized weaving knots of type W(3,n,m).
Through our analysis, we demonstrated that the coefficients of the Jones polynomial of weaving knots are essentially the Whitney numbers of Lucas lattices which allowed us to find an explicit formula for the Alexander polynomial of weaving knots of typeW(3,n).
In addition to confirming Fox’s trapezoidal conjecture, we also discussed the zeroes of the Alexander Polynomial of weaving knots of type W(3,n) as they relate to Hoste’s conjecture. In addition, …

Sl(2,Z) Representations And 2-Semiregular Modular Categories, Samuel Nathan Wilson
Sl(2,Z) Representations And 2-Semiregular Modular Categories, Samuel Nathan Wilson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
We address the open question of which representations of the modular group SL(2,Z) can be realized by a modular category. In order to investigate this problem, we introduce the concept of a symmetrizable representation of SL(2,Z) and show that this property is necessary for the representation to be realized. We then prove that all congruence representations of SL(2,Z) are symmetrizable. The proof involves constructing a symmetric basis, which greatly aids in further calculation. We apply this result to the reconstruction of modular category data from representations, as well as to the classification of semiregular categories, which are defined via an …

The Structure Of Locally Integral Involutive Po-Monoids And Semirings, José Gil-Férez, Peter Jipsen, Siddhartha Lodhia
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We show that every locally integral involutive partially ordered monoid (ipo-monoid) A = (A,⩽, ·, 1,∼,−), and in particular every locally integral involutive semiring, decomposes in a unique way into a family {Ap : p ∈ A+} of integral ipo-monoids, which we call its integral components. In the semiring case, the integral components are semirings. Moreover, we show that there is a family of monoid homomorphisms Φ = {φpq : Ap → Aq : p ⩽ q}, indexed on the positive cone (A+,⩽), so that the structure of A can be recovered as a glueing R ΦAp of its integral …
A Stronger Strong Schottky Lemma For Euclidean Buildings, Michael E. Ferguson
A Stronger Strong Schottky Lemma For Euclidean Buildings, Michael E. Ferguson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We provide a criterion for two hyperbolic isometries of a Euclidean building to generate a free group of rank two. In particular, we extend the application of a Strong Schottky Lemma to buildings given by Alperin, Farb and Noskov. We then use this extension to obtain an infinite family of matrices that generate a free group of rank two. In doing so, we also introduce an algorithm that terminates in finite time if the lemma is applicable for pairs of certain kinds of matrices acting on the Euclidean building for the special linear group over certain discretely valued fields.
From Mirrors To Wallpapers: A Virtual Math Circle Module On Symmetry, Nicole A. Sullivant, Christina L. Duron, Douglas T. Pfeffer
From Mirrors To Wallpapers: A Virtual Math Circle Module On Symmetry, Nicole A. Sullivant, Christina L. Duron, Douglas T. Pfeffer
Journal of Math Circles
Symmetry is a natural property that children see in their everyday lives; it also has deep mathematical connections to areas like tiling and objects like wallpaper groups. The Tucson Math Circle (TMC) presents a 7-part module on symmetry that starts with reflective symmetry and culminates in the deconstruction of wallpapers into their ‘generating tiles’. This module utilizes a scaffolded, hands-on approach to cover old and new mathematical topics with various interactive activities; all activities are made available through free web-based platforms. In this paper, we provide lesson plans for the various activities used, and discuss their online implementation with Zoom, …
General Covariance With Stacks And The Batalin-Vilkovisky Formalism, Filip Dul
General Covariance With Stacks And The Batalin-Vilkovisky Formalism, Filip Dul
Doctoral Dissertations
In this thesis we develop a formulation of general covariance, an essential property for many field theories on curved spacetimes, using the language of stacks and the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism. We survey the theory of stacks, both from a global and formal perspective, and consider the key example in our work: the moduli stack of metrics modulo diffeomorphism. This is then coupled to the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism–a formulation of field theory motivated by developments in derived geometry–to describe the associated equivariant observables of a theory and to recover and generalize results regarding current conservation.

Unomaha Problem Of The Week (2021-2022 Edition), Brad Horner, Jordan M. Sahs
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
The University of Omaha math department's Problem of the Week was taken over in Fall 2019 from faculty by the authors. The structure: each semester (Fall and Spring), three problems are given per week for twelve weeks, with each problem worth ten points - mimicking the structure of arguably the most well-regarded university math competition around, the Putnam Competition, with prizes awarded to top-scorers at semester's end. The weekly competition was halted midway through Spring 2020 due to COVID-19, but relaunched again in Fall 2021, with massive changes.
Now there are three difficulty tiers to POW problems, roughly corresponding to …

The Decomposition Of The Space Of Algebraic Curvature Tensors, Katelyn Sage Risinger
The Decomposition Of The Space Of Algebraic Curvature Tensors, Katelyn Sage Risinger
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
We decompose the space of algebraic curvature tensors (ACTs) on a finite dimensional, real inner product space under the action of the orthogonal group into three inequivalent and irreducible subspaces: the real numbers, the space of trace-free symmetric bilinear forms, and the space of Weyl tensors. First, we decompose the space of ACTs using two short exact sequences and a key result, Lemma 3.5, which allows us to express one vector space as the direct sum of the others. This gives us a decomposition of the space of ACTs as the direct sum of three subspaces, which at this point …
Fock And Hardy Spaces: Clifford Appell Case, Daniel Alpay, Kamal Diki, Irene Sabadini
Fock And Hardy Spaces: Clifford Appell Case, Daniel Alpay, Kamal Diki, Irene Sabadini
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this paper, we study a specific system of Clifford–Appell polynomials and, in particular, their product. Moreover, we introduce a new family of quaternionic reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces in the framework of Fueter regular functions. The construction is based on a general idea which allows us to obtain various function spaces by specifying a suitable sequence of real numbers. We focus on the Fock and Hardy cases in this setting, and we study the action of the Fueter mapping and its range.
Varieties Of Nonassociative Rings Of Bol-Moufang Type, Ronald E. White
Varieties Of Nonassociative Rings Of Bol-Moufang Type, Ronald E. White
All NMU Master's Theses
In this paper we investigate Bol-Moufang identities in a more general and very natural setting, \textit{nonassociative rings}.
We first introduce and define common algebras. We then explore the varieties of nonassociative rings of Bol-Moufang type. We explore two separate cases, the first where we consider binary rings, rings in which we make no assumption of it's structure. The second case we explore are rings in which, $2x=0$ implies $x=0$.
Prime Factors: America’S Prioritization Of Literacy Over Numeracy And Its Relationship To Systemic Inequity, Troy Smith
Prime Factors: America’S Prioritization Of Literacy Over Numeracy And Its Relationship To Systemic Inequity, Troy Smith
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
For much of American history, literacy has been prioritized in K-12 education and society, at large, at the expense of numeracy. This lack of numerical emphasis has established innumeracy as an American cultural norm that has resulted in America not producing a sufficient number of numerate citizens, and ranking poorly on mathematical performance in international comparisons. This paper investigates the decisions and circumstances that led to this under prioritization, along with the public and cultural impact of said actions. Toward this end, literature regarding contemporary and historical influences on American mathematics education (e.g., civic, policy, and parental) was reviewed. The …
Counting The Moduli Space Of Pentagons On Finite Projective Planes, Maxwell Hosler
Counting The Moduli Space Of Pentagons On Finite Projective Planes, Maxwell Hosler
Senior Independent Study Theses
Finite projective planes are finite incidence structures which generalize the concept of the real projective plane. In this paper, we consider structures of points embedded in these planes. In particular, we investigate pentagons in general position, meaning no three vertices are colinear. We are interested in properties of these pentagons that are preserved by collineation of the plane, and so can be conceived as properties of the equivalence class of polygons up to collineation as a whole. Amongst these are the symmetries of a pentagon and the periodicity of the pentagon under the pentagram map, and a generalization of …
Hidden Symmetries Of The Kepler Problem, Julia Kathryn Sheffler
Hidden Symmetries Of The Kepler Problem, Julia Kathryn Sheffler
Senior Projects Spring 2022
The orbits of planets can be described by solving Kepler’s problem which considers the motion due to by gravity (or any inverse square force law). The solutions to Kepler’s problem, for energies less then 0, are ellipses, with a few conserved quantities: energy, angular momentum and the Laplace-Runge-Lenz (LRL) vector. Each conserved quantity corresponds to symmetries of the system via N ̈other’s theorem. Energy conservation relates to time translations and angular momentum to three dimensional rotations. The symmetry related to the LRL vector is more difficult to visualize since it lives in phase space rather than configuration space. To understand …
Decoding Cyclic Codes Via Gröbner Bases, Eduardo Sosa
Decoding Cyclic Codes Via Gröbner Bases, Eduardo Sosa
Honors Theses
In this paper, we analyze the decoding of cyclic codes. First, we introduce linear and cyclic codes, standard decoding processes, and some standard theorems in coding theory. Then, we will introduce Gr¨obner Bases, and describe their connection to the decoding of cyclic codes. Finally, we go in-depth into how we decode cyclic codes using the key equation, and how a breakthrough by A. Brinton Cooper on decoding BCH codes using Gr¨obner Bases gave rise to the search for a polynomial-time algorithm that could someday decode any cyclic code. We discuss the different approaches taken toward developing such an algorithm and …

Algorithmic Correspondence For Relevance Logics, Bunched Implication Logics, And Relation Algebras Via An Implementation Of The Algorithm Pearl, Willem Conradie, Valentin Goranko, Peter Jipsen
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
The non-deterministic algorithmic procedure PEARL (acronym for ‘Propositional variables Elimination Algorithm for Relevance Logic’) has been recently developed for computing first-order equivalents of formulas of the language of relevance logics LR in terms of the standard Routley-Meyer relational semantics. It succeeds on a large class of axioms of relevance logics, including all so called inductive formulas. In the present work we re-interpret PEARL from an algebraic perspective, with its rewrite rules seen as manipulating quasi-inequalities interpreted over Urquhart’s relevant algebras, and report on its recent Python implementation. We also show that all formulae on which PEARL succeeds are canonical, i.e., …

Unary-Determined Distributive ℓ -Magmas And Bunched Implication Algebras, Natanael Alpay, Peter Jipsen, Melissa Sugimoto
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
A distributive lattice-ordered magma (dℓ-magma) (A,∧,∨,⋅) is a distributive lattice with a binary operation ⋅ that preserves joins in both arguments, and when ⋅ is associative then (A,∨,⋅) is an idempotent semiring. A dℓ-magma with a top ⊤ is unary-determined if x⋅y=(x⋅⊤∧y)∨(x∧⊤⋅y). These algebras are term-equivalent to a subvariety of distributive lattices with ⊤ and two join-preserving unary operations p, q. We obtain simple conditions on p, q such that x⋅y=(px∧y)∨(x∧qy) is associative, commutative, idempotent and/or has an identity element. This generalizes previous results on the structure of doubly idempotent semirings and, in the case when the …

Computable Model Theory On Loops, Josiah Schmidt
All NMU Master's Theses
We give an introduction to the problem of computable algebras. Specifically, the algebras of loops and groups. We start by defining a loop and group, then give some of their properties. We then give an overview of comptability theory, and apply it to loops and groups. We conclude by showing that a finitely presented residually finite algebra has a solvable word problem.

Determining Quantum Symmetry In Graphs Using Planar Algebras, Akshata Pisharody
Undergraduate Honors Theses
A graph has quantum symmetry if the algebra associated with its quantum automorphism group is non-commutative. We study what quantum symmetry means and outline one specific method for determining whether a graph has quantum symmetry, a method that involves studying planar algebras and manipulating planar tangles. Modifying a previously used method, we prove that the 5-cycle has no quantum symmetry by showing it has the generating property.

A Survey Of Methods To Determine Quantum Symmetry Of Graphs, Samantha Phillips
Undergraduate Honors Theses
We introduce the theory of quantum symmetry of a graph by starting with quantum permutation groups and classical automorphism groups. We study graphs with and without quantum symmetry to provide a comprehensive view of current techniques used to determine whether a graph has quantum symmetry. Methods provided include specific tools to show commutativity of generators of algebras of quantum automorphism groups of distance-transitive graphs; a theorem that describes why nontrivial, disjoint automorphisms in the automorphism group implies quantum symmetry; and a planar algebra approach to studying symmetry.

In this paper we prove the Leibniz analogue of Whitehead's vanishing theorem for the Chevalley-Eilenberg cohomology of Lie algebras. As a consequence, we obtain the second Whitehead lemma for Leibniz algebras. Moreover, we compute the cohomology of several Leibniz algebras with ad joint or irreducible coefficients. Our main tool is a Leibniz analogue of the Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence, which is an extension of the dual of a spectral sequence of Pirashvili for Leibniz homology from symmetric bimodules to arbitrary bimodules.

Mathematical Magic: A Study Of Number Puzzles, Nicasio M. Velez
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
Within this paper, we will briefly review the history of a collection of number puzzles which take the shape of squares, polygons, and polyhedra in both modular and nonmodular arithmetic. Among other results, we develop construction techniques for solutions of both Modulo and regular Magic Squares. For other polygons in nonmodular arithmetic, specifically of order 3, we present a proof of why there are only four Magic Triangles using linear algebra, disprove the existence of the Magic Tetrahedron in two ways, and utilizing the infamous 3-SUM combinatorics problem we disprove the existence of the Magic Octahedron.
