Generalized Thomas-Fermi Equations As The Lampariello Class Of Emden-Fowler Equations, Haret C. Rosu, S.C. Mancas Apr 2017

Generalized Thomas-Fermi Equations As The Lampariello Class Of Emden-Fowler Equations, Haret C. Rosu, S.C. Mancas

Publications

A one-parameter family of Emden-Fowler equations defined by Lampariello’s parameter p which, upon using Thomas-Fermi boundary conditions, turns into a set of generalized Thomas-Fermi equations comprising the standard Thomas-Fermi equation for p = 1 is studied in this paper. The entire family is shown to be non integrable by reduction to the corresponding Abel equations whose invariants do not satisfy a known integrability condition. We also discuss the equivalent dynamical system of equations for the standard Thomas-Fermi equation and perform its phase-plane analysis. The results of the latter analysis are similar for the whole class.

On The Three Dimensional Interaction Between Flexible Fibers And Fluid Flow, Bogdan Nita, Ryan Allaire Jan 2017

On The Three Dimensional Interaction Between Flexible Fibers And Fluid Flow, Bogdan Nita, Ryan Allaire

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In this paper we discuss the deformation of a flexible fiber clamped to a spherical body and immersed in a flow of fluid moving with a speed ranging between 0 and 50 cm/s by means of three dimensional numerical simulation developed in COMSOL . The effects of flow speed and initial configuration angle of the fiber relative to the flow are analyzed. A rigorous analysis of the numerical procedure is performed and our code is benchmarked against well established cases. The flow velocity and pressure are used to compute drag forces upon the fiber. Of particular interest is the behavior …

Orbital Stability Results For Soliton Solutions To Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations With External Potentials, Joseph B. Lindgren Jan 2017

Orbital Stability Results For Soliton Solutions To Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations With External Potentials, Joseph B. Lindgren

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

For certain nonlinear Schroedinger equations there exist solutions which are called solitary waves. Addition of a potential $V$ changes the dynamics, but for small enough $||V||_{L^\infty}$ we can still obtain stability (and approximately Newtonian motion of the solitary wave's center of mass) for soliton-like solutions up to a finite time that depends on the size and scale of the potential $V$. Our method is an adaptation of the well-known Lyapunov method.

For the sake of completeness, we also prove long-time stability of traveling solitons in the case $V=0$.

Neutrosophic Triplet Groups And Their Applications To Mathematical Modelling, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, Ilanthenral K. Jan 2017

Neutrosophic Triplet Groups And Their Applications To Mathematical Modelling, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, Ilanthenral K.

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The innovative notion of neutrosophic triplet groups, introduced by Smarandache and Ali in 2014-2016, happens to yield the anti-element and neutral element once the element is given. It is established that the neutrosophic triplet group collection forms the classical group under product for Zn, for some specific n. However the collection is not even closed under sum. These neutrosophic triplet groups are built using only modulo integers or Cayley tables. Several interesting properties related with them are defined. It is pertinent to record that in Zn, when n is a prime number, we cannot get a neutral element which can …

Computing The Optimal Path In Stochastic Dynamical Systems, Martha Bauver, Eric Forgoston, Lora Billings Aug 2016

Computing The Optimal Path In Stochastic Dynamical Systems, Martha Bauver, Eric Forgoston, Lora Billings

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In stochastic systems, one is often interested in finding the optimal path that maximizes the probability of escape from a metastable state or of switching between metastable states. Even for simple systems, it may be impossible to find an analytic form of the optimal path, and in high- dimensional systems, this is almost always the case. In this article, we formulate a constructive methodology that is used to compute the optimal path numerically. The method utilizes finite-time Lyapunov exponents, statistical selection criteria, and a Newton-based iterative minimizing scheme. The method is applied to four examples. The first example is a …

Topological Data Analysis For Systems Of Coupled Oscillators, Alec Dunton Jan 2016

Topological Data Analysis For Systems Of Coupled Oscillators, Alec Dunton

HMC Senior Theses

Coupled oscillators, such as groups of fireflies or clusters of neurons, are found throughout nature and are frequently modeled in the applied mathematics literature. Earlier work by Kuramoto, Strogatz, and others has led to a deep understanding of the emergent behavior of systems of such oscillators using traditional dynamical systems methods. In this project we outline the application of techniques from topological data analysis to understanding the dynamics of systems of coupled oscillators. This includes the examination of partitions, partial synchronization, and attractors. By looking for clustering in a data space consisting of the phase change of oscillators over a …

Full State Revivals In Linearly Coupled Chains With Commensurate Eigenspectra, J. J. P. Veerman, Jovan Petrovic Jan 2016

Full State Revivals In Linearly Coupled Chains With Commensurate Eigenspectra, J. J. P. Veerman, Jovan Petrovic

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Coherent state transfer is an important requirement in the construction of quantum computer hardware. The state transfer can be realized by linear next-neighbour-coupled finite chains. Starting from the commensurability of chain eigenvalues as the general condition of periodic dynamics, we find chains that support full periodic state revivals. For short chains, exact solutions are found analytically by solving the inverse eigenvalue problem to obtain the coupling coefficients between chain elements. We apply the solutions to design optical waveguide arrays and perform numerical simulations of light propagation thorough realistic waveguide structures. Applications of the presented method to the realization of a …

Signal Velocity In Oscillator Arrays, Carlos E. Cantos, David K. Hammond, J. J. P. Veerman Jan 2016

Signal Velocity In Oscillator Arrays, Carlos E. Cantos, David K. Hammond, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We investigate a system of coupled oscillators on the circle, which arises from a simple model for behavior of large numbers of autonomous vehicles. The model considers asymmetric, linear, decentralized dynamics, where the acceleration of each vehicle depends on the relative positions and velocities between itself and a set of local neighbors. We first derive necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability, then derive expressions for the phase velocity of propagation of disturbances in velocity through this system. We show that the high frequencies exhibit damping, which implies existence of well-defined signal velocities c+>0 and c−f(x−c+t) in the direction …

Four Tails Problems For Dynamical Collapse Theories, Kelvin J. Mcqueen Jan 2015

Four Tails Problems For Dynamical Collapse Theories, Kelvin J. Mcqueen

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

The primary quantum mechanical equation of motion entails that measurements typically do not have determinate outcomes, but result in superpositions of all possible outcomes. Dynamical collapse theories (e.g. GRW) supplement this equation with a stochastic Gaussian collapse function, intended to collapse the superposition of outcomes into one outcome. But the Gaussian collapses are imperfect in a way that leaves the superpositions intact. This is the tails problem. There are several ways of making this problem more precise. But many authors dismiss the problem without considering the more severe formulations. Here I distinguish four distinct tails problems. The first (bare tails …

Symbolic Neutrosophic Theory, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2015

Symbolic Neutrosophic Theory, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Symbolic (or Literal) Neutrosophic Theory is referring to the use of abstract symbols (i.e. the letters T, I, F, or their refined indexed letters Tj, Ik, Fl) in neutrosophics.

In the first chapter we extend the dialectical triad thesis-antithesis-synthesis (dynamics of A and antiA, to get a synthesis) to the neutrosophic tetrad thesis-antithesis-neutrothesis-neutrosynthesis (dynamics of A, antiA, and neutA, in order to get a neutrosynthesis).

In the second chapter we introduce the neutrosophic system and neutrosophic dynamic system. A neutrosophic system is a quasi- or –classical system, in the sense that the neutrosophic …

Discrete Nonlinear Planar Systems And Applications To Biological Population Models, Shushan Lazaryan, Nika Lazaryan, Nika Lazaryan Jan 2015

Discrete Nonlinear Planar Systems And Applications To Biological Population Models, Shushan Lazaryan, Nika Lazaryan, Nika Lazaryan

Theses and Dissertations

We study planar systems of difference equations and applications to biological models of species populations. Central to the analysis of this study is the idea of folding - the method of transforming systems of difference equations into higher order scalar difference equations. Two classes of second order equations are studied: quadratic fractional and exponential.

We investigate the boundedness and persistence of solutions, the global stability of the positive fixed point and the occurrence of periodic solutions of the quadratic rational equations. These results are applied to a class of linear/rational systems that can be transformed into a quadratic fractional equation …

Transients In The Synchronization Of Oscillator Arrays, Carlos E. Cantos, J. J. P. Veerman Oct 2014

Transients In The Synchronization Of Oscillator Arrays, Carlos E. Cantos, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this note is threefold. First we state a few conjectures that allow us to rigorously derive a theory which is asymptotic in N (the number of agents) that describes transients in large arrays of (identical) linear damped harmonic oscillators in R with completely decentralized nearest neighbor interaction. We then use the theory to establish that in a certain range of the parameters transients grow linearly in the number of agents (and faster outside that range). Finally, in the regime where this linear growth occurs we give the constant of proportionality as a function of the signal velocities …

Euler-Poincar´E Equations For G-Strands, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov Mar 2014

Euler-Poincar´E Equations For G-Strands, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov

Conference papers

The G-strand equations for a map R×R into a Lie group G are associated to a G-invariant Lagrangian. The Lie group manifold is also the configuration space for the Lagrangian. The G-strand itself is the map g(t,s):R×R→G, where t and s are the independent variables of the G-strand equations. The Euler-Poincar'e reduction of the variational principle leads to a formulation where the dependent variables of the G-strand equations take values in the corresponding Lie algebra g and its co-algebra, g with respect to the pairing provided by the variational derivatives of the Lagrangian. We review examples of different G-strand …

Mechanical Visualization Of A Second Order Dynamic Equation On Varying Time Scales, Molly Kathryn Peterson Jan 2014

Mechanical Visualization Of A Second Order Dynamic Equation On Varying Time Scales, Molly Kathryn Peterson

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In this work, we give an introduction to Time Scales Calculus, the properties of the exponential function on an arbitrary time scale, and use it to solve linear dynamic equation of second order. Time Scales Calculus was introduced by Stefan Hilger in 1988. It brings together the theories of difference and differential equations into one unified theory. By using the properties of the delta derivative and the delta anti-derivative, we analyze the behavior of a second order linear homogeneous dynamic equation on various time scales. After the analytical discussion, we will graphically evaluate the second order dynamic equation in Marshall’s …

Relative Equilibria Of Isosceles Triatomic Molecules In Classical Approximation, Damaris Miriam Mckinley Jan 2014

Relative Equilibria Of Isosceles Triatomic Molecules In Classical Approximation, Damaris Miriam Mckinley

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In this thesis we study relative equilibria of di-atomic and isosceles tri-atomic molecules in classical approximations with repulsive-attractive interaction. For di-atomic systems we retrieve well-known results. The main contribution consists of the study of the existence and stability of relative equilibria in a three-atom system formed by two identical atoms of mass $m$ and a third of mass $m_3$, constrained in an isosceles configuration at all times.

Given the shape of the binary potential only, we discuss the existence of equilibria and relative equilibria. We represent the results in the form of energy-momentum diagrams. We find that fixing the masses …

Viscosity Dependence Of Faraday Wave Formation Thresholds, Lisa Michelle Slaughter Dec 2013

Viscosity Dependence Of Faraday Wave Formation Thresholds, Lisa Michelle Slaughter

Physics

This experiment uses an electromagnetic shaker to produce standing wave patterns on the surface of a vertically oscillating sample of silicon liquid. These surface waves, known as Faraday waves, form shapes such as squares, lines, and hexagons. They are known to be dependent upon the frequency and amplitude of the forcing as well as on the viscosity and depth of the liquid in the dish. At a depth of 4mm and for various silicon liquids having kinematic viscosities of 10, 20, and 38 cSt, we determined the acceleration at which patterns form for frequencies between 10 and 60 Hz. For …

Long-Wave Model For Strongly Anisotropic Growth Of A Crystal Step, Mikhail Khenner Aug 2013

Long-Wave Model For Strongly Anisotropic Growth Of A Crystal Step, Mikhail Khenner

Mathematics Faculty Publications

A continuum model for the dynamics of a single step with the strongly anisotropic line energy is formulated and analyzed. The step grows by attachment of adatoms from the lower terrace, onto which atoms adsorb from a vapor phase or from a molecular beam, and the desorption is nonnegligible (the “one-sided” model). Via a multiscale expansion, we derived a long-wave, strongly nonlinear, and strongly anisotropic evolution PDE for the step profile. Written in terms of the step slope, the PDE can be represented in a form similar to a convective Cahn-Hilliard equation. We performed the linear stability analysis and computed …

G-Strands, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov, James Percival Nov 2012

G-Strands, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov, James Percival

Articles

A G-strand is a map g(t,s): RxR --> G for a Lie group G that follows from Hamilton's principle for a certain class of G-invariant Lagrangians. The SO(3)-strand is the G-strand version of the rigid body equation and it may be regarded physically as a continuous spin chain. Here, SO(3)K-strand dynamics for ellipsoidal rotations is derived as an Euler-Poincar'e system for a certain class of variations and recast as a Lie-Poisson system for coadjoint flow with the same Hamiltonian structure as for a perfect complex fluid. For a special Hamiltonian, the SO(3) …

The Octonions And The Exceptional Lie Algebra G2, Ian M. Anderson Sep 2012

The Octonions And The Exceptional Lie Algebra G2, Ian M. Anderson

Research Vignettes

The octonions O are an 8-dimensional non-commutative, non-associative normed real algebra. The set of all derivations of O form a real Lie algebra. It is remarkable fact, first proved by E. Cartan in 1908, that the the derivation algebra of O is the compact form of the exceptional Lie algebra G2. In this worksheet we shall verify this result of Cartan and also show that the derivation algebra of the split octonions is the split real form of G2.

Special Dual Like Numbers And Lattices, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy Jan 2012

Special Dual Like Numbers And Lattices, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book the authors introduce a new type of dual numbers called special dual like numbers. These numbers are constructed using idempotents in the place of nilpotents of order two as new element. That is x = a + bg is a special dual like number where a and b are reals and g is a new element such that g2 =g. The collection of special dual like numbers forms a ring. Further lattices are the rich structures which contributes to special dual like numbers. These special dual like numbers x = a + bg; when a and b …

Euler Equations On A Semi-Direct Product Of The Diffeomorphisms Group By Itself, Joachim Escher, Rossen Ivanov, Boris Kolev Sep 2011

Euler Equations On A Semi-Direct Product Of The Diffeomorphisms Group By Itself, Joachim Escher, Rossen Ivanov, Boris Kolev

Articles

The geodesic equations of a class of right invariant metrics on the semi-direct product of two Diff(S) groups are studied. The equations are explicitly described, they have the form of a system of coupled equations of Camassa-Holm type and possess singular (peakon) solutions. Their integrability is further investigated, however no compatible bi-Hamiltonian structures on the corresponding dual Lie algebra are found.

A Group-Permutation Algorithm To Solve The Generalized Sudoku, Florentin Smarandache Jun 2011

A Group-Permutation Algorithm To Solve The Generalized Sudoku, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Sudoku can be generalized to squares whose dimensions are n^2 × n^2 , where n ≥ 2, using various symbols (numbers, letters, mathematical symbols, etc.), written just one time on each row and on each column; and the large square is divided into n 2 small squares with the side n × n and each will contain all n 2 symbols written only once. In this paper we present an elementary solution for the generalized sudoku based on a group-permutation algorithm.

Finding The Beat In Music: Using Adaptive Oscillators, Kate M. Burgers May 2011

Finding The Beat In Music: Using Adaptive Oscillators, Kate M. Burgers

HMC Senior Theses

The task of finding the beat in music is simple for most people, but surprisingly difficult to replicate in a robot. Progress in this problem has been made using various preprocessing techniques (Hitz 2008; Tomic and Janata 2008). However, a real-time method is not yet available. Methods using a class of oscillators called relay relaxation oscillators are promising. In particular, systems of forced Hopf oscillators (Large 2000; Righetti et al. 2006) have been used with relative success. This work describes current methods of beat tracking and develops a new method that incorporates the best ideas from each existing method and …

Noise, Delays, And Resonance In A Neural Network, Austin Quan May 2011

Noise, Delays, And Resonance In A Neural Network, Austin Quan

HMC Senior Theses

A stochastic-delay differential equation (SDDE) model of a small neural network with recurrent inhibition is presented and analyzed. The model exhibits unexpected transient behavior: oscillations that occur at the boundary of the basins of attraction when the system is bistable. These are known as delay-induced transitory oscillations (DITOs). This behavior is analyzed in the context of stochastic resonance, an unintuitive, though widely researched phenomenon in physical bistable systems where noise can play in constructive role in strengthening an input signal. A method for modeling the dynamics using a probabilistic three-state model is proposed, and supported with numerical evidence. The potential …
