Total Differentiability And Monogenicity For Functions In Algebras Of Order 4, I. Sabadini, Daniele C. Struppa

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper we discuss some notions of analyticity in associative algebras with unit. We also recall some basic tool in algebraic analysis and we use them to study the properties of analytic functions in two algebras of dimension four that played a relevant role in some work of the Italian school, but that have never been fully investigated.

Lattice-Ordered Pregroups Are Semi-Distributive, Nikolaos Galatos, Peter Jipsen, Michael Kinyon, Adam Přenosil Jan 2021

Lattice-Ordered Pregroups Are Semi-Distributive, Nikolaos Galatos, Peter Jipsen, Michael Kinyon, Adam Přenosil

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We prove that the lattice reduct of every lattice-ordered pregroup is semidistributive. This is a consequence of a certain weak form of the distributive law which holds in lattice-ordered pregroups.

On The Global Operator And Fueter Mapping Theorem For Slice Polyanalytic Functions, Daniel Alpay, Kamal Diki, Irene Sabadini Nov 2020

On The Global Operator And Fueter Mapping Theorem For Slice Polyanalytic Functions, Daniel Alpay, Kamal Diki, Irene Sabadini

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper, we prove that slice polyanalytic functions on quaternions can be considered as solutions of a power of some special global operator with nonconstant coefficients as it happens in the case of slice hyperholomorphic functions. We investigate also an extension version of the Fueter mapping theorem in this polyanalytic setting. In particular, we show that under axially symmetric conditions it is always possible to construct Fueter regular and poly-Fueter regular functions through slice polyanalytic ones using what we call the poly-Fueter mappings. We study also some integral representations of these results on the quaternionic unit ball.

Exact And Strongly Exact Filters, M. A. Moshier, A. Pultr, A. L. Suarez Jul 2020

Exact And Strongly Exact Filters, M. A. Moshier, A. Pultr, A. L. Suarez

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

A meet in a frame is exact if it join-distributes with every element, it is strongly exact if it is preserved by every frame homomorphism. Hence, finite meets are (strongly) exact which leads to the concept of an exact resp. strongly exact filter, a filter closed under exact resp. strongly exact meets. It is known that the exact filters constitute a frame FiltE(L) somewhat surprisingly isomorphic to the frame of joins of closed sublocales. In this paper we present a characteristic of the coframe of meets of open sublocales as the dual to the frame of strongly exact filters FiltsE(L).

On Pseudo-Spectral Factorization Over The Complex Numbers And Quaternions, Daniel Alpay, Fabrizio Colombo, Izchak Lewkowicz, Irene Sabadini Jul 2020

On Pseudo-Spectral Factorization Over The Complex Numbers And Quaternions, Daniel Alpay, Fabrizio Colombo, Izchak Lewkowicz, Irene Sabadini

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

This paper is a continuation of the research of our previous work[5] and considers quaternionic generalized Carathéodory functions and the related family of generalized positive functions. It is addressed to a wide audience which includes researchers in complex and hypercomplex analysis, in the theory of linear systems, but also electric engineers. For this reason it includes some results on generalized Carathéodory functions and their factorization in the classic complex case which might be of independent interest. An important new result is a pseudo-spectral factorization and we also discuss some interpolation problems in the class of quaternionic generalized positive functions.

On The Extension Of Positive Definite Kernels To Topological Algebras, Daniel Alpay, Ismael L. Paiva

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We define an extension of operator-valued positive definite functions from the real or complex setting to topological algebras and describe their associated reproducing kernel spaces. The case of entire functions is of special interest, and we give a precise meaning to some power series expansions of analytic functions that appears in many algebras.

The Structure Of Generalized Bi-Algebras And Weakening Relation Algebras, Nikolaos Galatos, Peter Jipsen Jun 2020

The Structure Of Generalized Bi-Algebras And Weakening Relation Algebras, Nikolaos Galatos, Peter Jipsen

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Generalized bunched implication algebras (GBI-algebras) are defined as residuated lattices with a Heyting implication, and are positioned between Boolean algebras with operators and lattices with operators. We characterize congruences on GBI-algebras by filters that are closed under Gumm–Ursini terms, and for involutive GBI-algebras these terms simplify to a dual version of the congruence term for relation algebras together with two more terms. We prove that representable weakening relation algebras form a variety of cyclic involutive GBI-algebras, denoted by RWkRA, containing the variety of representable relation algebras. We describe a double-division conucleus construction on residuated lattices and on (cyclic involutive) GBI-algebras …

Acoustic Versus Electromagnetic Field Theory: Scalar, Vector, Spinor Representations And The Emergence Of Acoustic Spin, Lucas Burns, Konstantin Y. Bliokh, Franco Nori, Justin Dressel May 2020

Acoustic Versus Electromagnetic Field Theory: Scalar, Vector, Spinor Representations And The Emergence Of Acoustic Spin, Lucas Burns, Konstantin Y. Bliokh, Franco Nori, Justin Dressel

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We construct a novel Lagrangian representation of acoustic field theory that describes the local vector properties of longitudinal (curl-free) acoustic fields. In particular, this approach accounts for the recently-discovered nonzero spin angular momentum density in inhomogeneous sound fields in fluids or gases. The traditional acoustic Lagrangian representation with a scalar potential is unable to describe such vector properties of acoustic fields adequately, which are however observable via local radiation forces and torques on small probe particles. By introducing a displacement vector potential analogous to the electromagnetic vector potential, we derive the appropriate canonical momentum and spin densities as conserved Noether …

Structure Theorems For Idempotent Residuated Lattices, José Gil-Férez, Peter Jipsen, George Metcalfe May 2020

Structure Theorems For Idempotent Residuated Lattices, José Gil-Férez, Peter Jipsen, George Metcalfe

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper we study structural properties of residuated lattices that are idempotent as monoids. We provide descriptions of the totally ordered members of this class and obtain counting theorems for the number of finite algebras in various subclasses. We also establish the finite embeddability property for certain varieties generated by classes of residuated lattices that are conservative in the sense that monoid multiplication always yields one of its arguments. We then make use of a more symmetric version of Raftery’s characterization theorem for totally ordered commutative idempotent residuated lattices to prove that the variety generated by this class has …

Semi De Morgan Logic Properly Displayed, Giuseppe Greco, Fei Qin, M. Andrew Moshier, Alessandra Palmigiano

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In the present paper, we endow semi De Morgan logic and a family of its axiomatic extensions with proper multi-type display calculi which are sound, complete, conservative, and enjoy cut elimination and subformula property. Our proposal builds on an algebraic analysis of the variety of semi De Morgan algebras, and applies the guidelines of the multi-type methodology in the design of display calculi.

A General Setting For Functions Of Fueter Variables: Differentiability, Rational Functions, Fock Module And Related Topics, Daniel Alpay, Ismael L. Paiva, Daniele C. Struppa Jan 2020

A General Setting For Functions Of Fueter Variables: Differentiability, Rational Functions, Fock Module And Related Topics, Daniel Alpay, Ismael L. Paiva, Daniele C. Struppa

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We develop some aspects of the theory of hyperholomorphic functions whose values are taken in a Banach algebra over a field—assumed to be the real or the complex numbers—and which contains the field. Notably, we consider Fueter expansions, Gleason’s problem, the theory of hyperholomorphic rational functions, modules of Fueter series, and related problems. Such a framework includes many familiar algebras as particular cases. The quaternions, the split quaternions, the Clifford algebras, the ternary algebra, and the Grassmann algebra are a few examples of them.

Distributive Laws In Residuated Binars, Wesley Fussner, Peter Jipsen Nov 2019

Distributive Laws In Residuated Binars, Wesley Fussner, Peter Jipsen

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In residuated binars there are six non-obvious distributivity identities of ⋅,/,∖ over ∧,∨. We show that in residuated binars with distributive lattice reducts there are some dependencies among these identities; specifically, there are six pairs of identities that imply another one of these identities, and we provide counterexamples to show that no other dependencies exist among these.

Positivity, Rational Schur Functions, Blaschke Factors, And Other Related Results In The Grassmann Algebra, Daniel Alpay, Ismael L. Paiva, Daniele C. Struppa Feb 2019

Positivity, Rational Schur Functions, Blaschke Factors, And Other Related Results In The Grassmann Algebra, Daniel Alpay, Ismael L. Paiva, Daniele C. Struppa

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We begin a study of Schur analysis in the setting of the Grassmann algebra when the latter is completed with respect to the 1-norm. We focus on the rational case. We start with a theorem on invertibility in the completed algebra, and define a notion of positivity in this setting. We present a series of applications pertaining to Schur analysis, including a counterpart of the Schur algorithm, extension of matrices and rational functions. Other topics considered include Wiener algebra, reproducing kernels Banach modules, and Blaschke factors.

Positive And Generalized Positive Real Lemma For Slice Hyperholomorphic Functions, Daniel Alpay, Fabrizio Colombo, Izchak Lewkowicz, Irene Sabadini

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper we prove a quaternionic positive real lemma as well as its generalized version, in case the associated kernel has negative squares for slice hyperholomorphic functions. We consider the case of functions with positive real part in the half space of quaternions with positive real part, as well as the case of (generalized) Schur functions in the open unit ball.

Distribution Spaces And A New Construction Of Stochastic Processes Associated With The Grassmann Algebra, Daniel Alpay, Ismael L. Paiva, Daniele C. Struppa

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We associate with the Grassmann algebra a topological algebra of distributions, which allows the study of processes analogous to the corresponding free stochastic processes with stationary increments, as well as their derivatives.

Positive Subreducts In Finitely Generated Varieties Of Mv-Algebras, Leonardo M. Cabrer, Peter Jipsen, Tomáš Kroupa

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Positive MV-algebras are negation-free and implication-free subreducts of MV-algebras. In this contribution we show that a finite axiomatic basis exists for the quasivariety of positive MV-algebras coming from any finitely generated variety of MV-algebras.

About A Non-Standard Interpolation Problem, Daniel Alpay, Alain Yger

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Using algebraic methods, and motivated by the one variable case, we study a multipoint interpolation problem in the setting of several complex variables. The duality realized by the residue generator associated with an underlying Gorenstein algebra, using the Lagrange interpolation polynomial, plays a key role in the arguments.

"We define partially-ordered multi-type algebras and use them as algebraic semantics for multi-type display calculi that have recently been developed for several logics, including dynamic epistemic logic [7], linear logic[10], lattice logic [11], bilattice logic [9] and semi-De Morgan logic [8]."

Nonassociative Right Hoops, Peter Jipsen, Michael Kinyon May 2018

Nonassociative Right Hoops, Peter Jipsen, Michael Kinyon

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The class of nonassociative right hoops, or narhoops for short, is defined as a subclass of right-residuated magmas, and is shown to be a variety. These algebras generalize both right quasigroups and right hoops, and we characterize the subvarieties in which the operation x ^^ y = (x/y)y is associative and/or commutative. Narhoops with a left unit are proved to be integral if and only if ^ is commutative, and their congruences are determined by the equivalence class of the left unit. We also prove that the four identities defining narhoops are independent.

On Lattices Of Z-Ideals Of Function Rings, Themba Dube, Oghenetega Ighedo

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

An ideal I of a ring A is a z-ideal if whenever a, bA belong to the same maximal ideals of A and aI, then bI as well. On the other hand, an ideal J of A is a d-ideal if Ann2(a) ⊆ J for every aJ. It is known that the lattices Z(L) and D(L) of the ring 𝓡L of continuous real-valued functions on a frame L, consisting of z-ideals and d-ideals of 𝓡 …

Distributive Residuated Frames And Generalized Bunched Implication Algebras, Nikolaos Galatos, Peter Jipsen Oct 2017

Distributive Residuated Frames And Generalized Bunched Implication Algebras, Nikolaos Galatos, Peter Jipsen

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We show that all extensions of the (non-associative) Gentzen system for distributive full Lambek calculus by simple structural rules have the cut elimination property. Also, extensions by such rules that do not increase complexity have the finite model property, hence many subvarieties of the variety of distributive residuated lattices have decidable equational theories. For some other extensions, we prove the finite embeddability property, which implies the decidability of the universal theory, and we show that our results also apply to generalized bunched implication algebras. Our analysis is conducted in the general setting of residuated frames.

“Wrong” Side Interpolation By Positive Real Rational Functions, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz Sep 2017

“Wrong” Side Interpolation By Positive Real Rational Functions, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Using polynomial interpolation, along with structural properties of the family of rational positive real functions, we here show that a set of m nodes in the open left half of the complex plane, can always be mapped to anywhere in the complex plane by rational positive real functions whose degree is at most m. Moreover we introduce an easy-to-find parametrization in R2m+3 of a large subset of these interpolating functions.

Beurling-Lax Type Theorems In The Complex And Quaternionic Setting, Daniel Alpay, Irene Sabadini May 2017

Beurling-Lax Type Theorems In The Complex And Quaternionic Setting, Daniel Alpay, Irene Sabadini

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We give a generalization of the Beurling–Lax theorem both in the complex and quaternionic settings. We consider in the first case functions meromorphic in the right complex half-plane, and functions slice hypermeromorphic in the right quaternionic half-space in the second case. In both settings we also discuss a unified framework, which includes both the disk and the half-plane for the complex case and the open unit ball and the half-space in the quaternionic setting.

Relation Algebras, Idempotent Semirings And Generalized Bunched Implication Algebras, Peter Jipsen Apr 2017

Relation Algebras, Idempotent Semirings And Generalized Bunched Implication Algebras, Peter Jipsen

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

This paper investigates connections between algebraic structures that are common in theoretical computer science and algebraic logic. Idempotent semirings are the basis of Kleene algebras, relation algebras, residuated lattices and bunched implication algebras. Extending a result of Chajda and Länger, we show that involutive residuated lattices are determined by a pair of dually isomorphic idempotent semirings on the same set, and this result also applies to relation algebras. Generalized bunched implication algebras (GBI-algebras for short) are residuated lattices expanded with a Heyting implication. We construct bounded cyclic involutive GBI-algebras from so-called weakening relations, and prove that the class of weakening …

On A Class Of Quaternionic Positive Definite Functions And Their Derivatives, Daniel Alpay, Fabrizio Colombo, Irene Sabadini

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper, we start the study of stochastic processes over the skew field of quaternions. We discuss the relation between positive definite functions and the covariance of centered Gaussian processes and the construction of stochastic processes and their derivatives. The use of perfect spaces and strong algebras and the notion of Fock space are crucial in this framework.

The Mathematics Of Superoscillations, Yakir Aharonov, Fabrizio Colombo, Irene Sabadini, Daniele C. Struppa, Jeff Tollaksen

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In the past 50 years, quantum physicists have discovered, and experimentally demonstrated, a phenomenon which they termed superoscillations. Aharonov and his collaborators showed that superoscillations naturally arise when dealing with weak values, a notion that provides a fundamentally different way to regard measurements in quantum physics. From a mathematical point of view, superoscillating functions are a superposition of small Fourier components with a bounded Fourier spectrum, which result, when appropriately summed, in a shift that can be arbitrarily large, and well outside the spectrum. Purpose of this work is twofold: on one hand we provide a self-contained survey of the …

Characterizations Of Families Of Rectangular, Finite Impulse Response, Para-Unitary Systems, Daniel Alpay, Palle Jorgensen, Izchak Lewkowicz

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We here study Finite Impulse Response (FIR) rectangular, not necessarily causal, systems which are (para)-unitary on the unit circle (=the class U). First, we offer three characterizations of these systems. Then, introduce a description of all FIRs in U, as copies of a real polytope, parametrized by the dimensions and the McMillan degree of the FIRs.

Finally, we present six simple ways (along with their combinations) to construct, from any FIR, a large family of FIRs, of various dimensions and McMillan degrees, so that whenever the original system is in U, so is the whole family.

A key role is …

Adaptive Orthonormal Systems For Matrix-Valued Functions, Daniel Alpay, Fabrizio Colombo, Tao Qian, Irene Sabadini, Tao Qian

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper we consider functions in the Hardy space Hp×q2 defined in the unit disc of matrix-valued. We show that it is possible, as in the scalar case, to decompose those functions as linear combinations of suitably modified matrix-valued Blaschke product, in an adaptive way. The procedure is based on a generalization to the matrix-valued case of the maximum selection principle which involves not only selections of suitable points in the unit disc but also suitable orthogonal projections. We show that the maximum selection principle gives rise to a convergent algorithm. Finally, we discuss the case of real-valued signals.
