Some New Classes Of Complex Symmetric Operators, Stephan Ramon Garcia, Warren R. Wogen

We say that an operator $T \in B(H)$ is complex symmetric if there exists a conjugate-linear, isometric involution $C:H\to H$ so that $T = CT^*C$. We prove that binormal operators, operators that are algebraic of degree two (including all idempotents), and large classes of rank-one perturbations of normal operators are complex symmetric. From an abstract viewpoint, these results explain why the compressed shift and Volterra integration operator are complex symmetric. Finally, we attempt to describe all complex symmetric partial isometries, obtaining the sharpest possible statement given only the data $(\dim \ker T, \dim \ker T^*)$.

Search Bounds For Zeros Of Polynomials Over The Algebraic Closure Of Q, Lenny Fukshansky

We discuss existence of explicit search bounds for zeros of polynomials with coefficients in a number field. Our main result is a theorem about the existence of polynomial zeros of small height over the field of algebraic numbers outside of unions of subspaces. All bounds on the height are explicit.

Solutions of the classical dynamical Yang-Baxter equation on a Lie superalgebra are called super dynamical r−matrices. A super dynamical r−matrix r satisfies the zero weight condition if

A *-Closed Subalgebra Of The Smirnov Class, Stephan Ramon Garcia

We study real Smirnov functions and investigate a certain *-closed subalgebra of the Smirnov class N^+ containing them. Motivated by a result of Aleksandrov, we provide an explicit representation for the space H^p ∩ H^p [overscore over the second H^p]. This leads to a natural analog of the Riesz projection on a certain quotient space of L^p for p ϵ (0, 1). We also study a Herglotz-like integral transform for singular measures on the unit circle ∂D.

A Look At Biseparating Maps From An Algebraic Point Of View, Melvin Henriksen, Frank A. Smith

In [ABN], Araujo, Beckenstein, and Narici add the capstone to a series of papers by several groups of authors by showing that if ρ is a biseparating map between two algebras of all real or complex-valued functions on realcompact spaces, then it is a continuous multiple of an isomorphism between these rings. Their proof uses relatively powerful analytic and topological techniques. In what follows, the extent to which such a result can be generalized to a wider class of algebras using algebraic techniques is investigated. We are unable, however to obtain the main result of [ABN] using these techniques.

An f-ring (i.e., a lattice-ordered ring that is a subdirect product of totally ordered rings) A is called an SV-ring if A/P is a valuation domain for every prime ideal P of A. Problems posed twenty and twenty-five years ago by M. Henriksen and M. Jerison are solved by showing that the space of minimal prime ideals of the ring C(X) of continuous real-valued functions on a compact (Hausdorff) space need not be basically disconnected-or even an F-space.

It is shown that if X is a nonpseudocompact space with a σ-locally finite π-base, then X has remote points. Within the class of spaces possessing a σ-locally finite π-base, this result extends the work of Chae and Smith, because their work utilized normality to achieve complete separation. It provides spaces which have remote points, where the spaces do not satisfy the conditions required in the previous works by Dow, by van Douwen, by van Mill, or by Peters.

This paper is a summary of joint research by F. Dashiell, A. Hager and the present author. Proofs are largely omitted. A complete version will appear in the Canadian Journal of Mathematics. It is devoted to a study of sequential order-Cauchy convergence and the associated completion in vector lattices of continuous functions. Such a completion for lattices C(X) is related to certain topological properties of the space X and to ring properties of C(X). By a slight modification of Kaplansky's argument, we find that the condition on zero-divisors can be replaced by the hypothesis that S be an Hermite ring (i.e., every matrix over S can be reduced to triangular form). This is an improvement, since, in any case, it is necessary that S be an Hermite ring, while, on the other hand, it is not necessary that all zero-divisors be in the radical. In fact, we show that every regular commutative ring with identity is adequate. However, the condition that S be adequate is not necessary either.

The outline of our present paper is as follows. In §1, we collect some preliminary definitions and results. §2 inaugurates the study of F-rings and F-spaces (i.e., those spaces X for which C(X) is an F-ring).

The space of reals is not an F-space; in fact, a metric space is an F-space if and only if it is discrete. On the other hand, if X is any locally compact, σ-compact space (e.g., the reals), then βX-X is an F-space.
