If A is an abelian quandle and Q is a quandle, the hom set Hom(Q,A) of quandle homomorphisms from Q to A has a natural quandle structure. We exploit this fact to enhance the quandle counting invariant, providing an example of links with the same counting invariant values but distinguished by the hom quandle structure. We generalize the result to the case of biquandles, collect observations and results about abelian quandles and the hom quandle, and show that the category of abelian quandles is symmetric monoidal closed.

We study Richard Thompson's group V, and some generalizations of this group. V was one of the first two examples of a finitely presented, infinite, simple group. Since being discovered in 1965, V has appeared in a wide range of mathematical subjects. Despite many years of study, much of the structure of V remains unclear. Part of the difficulty is that the standard presentation for V is complicated, hence most algebraic techniques have yet to prove fruitful.

In a section about research, we make the case that intentional, structured reflection on the mathematical research process, by mathematical researchers themselves, would result in better mathematicians doing better mathematics. As supporting evidence, we describe the Flavors and Seasons project. In a section about teaching, we describe the contemplative education movement and share personal experiences using meditation in the math classroom. We conclude with an explicit proposal for elucidating the experiential context of mathematics, in both research and teaching environments.

The Alexander biquandle of a virtual knot or link is a module over a 2-variable Laurent polynomial ring which is an invariant of virtual knots and links. The elementary ideals of this module are then invariants of virtual isotopy which determine both the generalized Alexander polynomial (also known as the Sawollek polynomial) for virtual knots and the classical Alexander polynomial for classical knots. For a fixed monomial ordering <, the Gr\"obner bases for these ideals are computable, comparable invariants which fully determine the elementary ideals and which generalize and unify the classical and generalized Alexander polynomials. We provide examples to illustrate the usefulness of these invariants and propose questions for future work.

According to any standard dictionary, the word "cardinal" is synonymous with "principal", "essential", "fundamental". In centric mathematics (CM), or ordinary mathematics, cardinal is, on the one hand, a number equal to a number of finite aggregate, called the power of the aggregate, and on the other hand, known as the sine cardinal sinc(x) or cosine cardinal cosc(x), is a special function defined by the centric circular function (CCF). sin(x) and cos(x) are commonly used in undulatory physics (see Figure 1) and whose graph, the graph of cardinal sine, which is called as "Mexican hat" (sombrero) because of its shape.

Let ζ be an n-dimensional complex matrix bundle over a compact metric space X and let Aζ denote the C*-algebra of sections of this bundle. We determine the rational homotopy type as an H-space of UAζ, the group of unitaries of Aζ. The answer turns out to be independent of the bundle ζ and depends only upon n and the rational cohomology of X. We prove analogous results for the gauge group and the projective gauge group of a principal bundle over a compact metric space X.

Mu-Wan Huang, Mark Walker and I established an explicit formula for the equivariant K-groups of affine toric varieties. We also recovered a result due to Vezzosi and Vistoli, which expresses the equivariant K-groups of a smooth toric variety in terms of the K-groups of its maximal open affine toric subvarieties. This dissertation investigates the situation when the toric variety X is neither affine nor smooth. In many cases, we compute the Čech cohomology groups of the presheaf KqT on X endowed with a topology. Using these calculations and Walker's Localization Theorem for equivariant K-theory, we give explicit formulas …

The sequence of pitches which form a musical melody can be transposed or inverted. Since the 1970s, music theorists have modeled musical transposition and inversion in terms of an action of the dihedral group of order 24. More recently music theorists have found an intriguing second way that the dihedral group of order 24 acts on the set of major and minor chords. We illustrate both geometrically and algebraically how these two actions are {\it dual}. Both actions and their duality have been used to analyze works of music as diverse as Hindemith and the Beatles.

We describe an interesting relation between Lie 2-algebras, the Kac-Moody central extensions of loop groups, and the group String(n). A Lie 2-algebra is a categorified version of a Lie algebra where the Jacobi identity holds up to a natural isomorphism called the "Jacobiator". Similarly, a Lie 2-group is a categorified version of a Lie group. If G is a simply-connected compact simple Lie group, there is a 1-parameter family of Lie 2-algebras g_k each having Lie(G) as its Lie algebra of objects, but with a Jacobiator built from the canonical 3-form on G. In contribution to the classification of all tilings of low-genus surfaces, the kaleidoscopic and non-kaleidoscopic tilings by quadrilaterals are given up to genus 12. As part of their classification, the algebraic structure of the conformal tiling groups and the geometric structure of the tiles are specified. In addition, several infinite classes of tilings and tiling groups are presented.

Consider a surface, S, with a kaleidoscopic tiling by non-obtuse triangles (tiles), i.e., each local reflection in a side of a triangle extends to an isometry of the surface, preserving the tiling. The tiling is geodesic if the side of each triangle extends to a closed geodesic on the surface consisting of edges of tiles. The reflection group G*, generated by these reflections, is called the tiling group of the surface. This paper classifies, up to isometry, all geodesic, kaleidoscopic tilings by triangles, of hyperbolic surfaces of genus up to 13. As a part of this classification the tiling groups …

The problem of kaleidoscopically tiling a surface by congruent triangles is equivalent to finding groups generated in certain ways. In order to admit a tiling, a group must have a specific set of generators as well as an involutary automorphism, T, that acts to reverse the orientation of the tiles. The purpose of this paper is to explore group theoretic and computational methods for determining the existence of symmetry groups and tiling groups, as well as to classify the symmetry and tiling groups on hyperbolic Riemann surfaces of genus 6 and 7.

In [ABN], Araujo, Beckenstein, and Narici add the capstone to a series of papers by several groups of authors by showing that if ρ is a biseparating map between two algebras of all real or complex-valued functions on realcompact spaces, then it is a continuous multiple of an isomorphism between these rings. Their proof uses relatively powerful analytic and topological techniques. In what follows, the extent to which such a result can be generalized to a wider class of algebras using algebraic techniques is investigated. We are unable, however to obtain the main result of [ABN] using these techniques.

We consider triangle-quadrilateral pairs in the hyperbolic plane which "kaleidoscopically" tile the plane simultaneously. In this case the tiling by quadrilaterals is called a divisible tiling. All possible such divisible tilings are classified. There are a finite number of 1,2, and 3 parameter families as well as a finite number of exceptional cases.
