Permutations, Representations, And Partition Algebras: A Random Walk Through Algebraic Statistics, Ian Shors Jan 2023

Permutations, Representations, And Partition Algebras: A Random Walk Through Algebraic Statistics, Ian Shors

HMC Senior Theses

My thesis examines a class of functions on the symmetric group called permutation statistics using tools from representation theory. In 2014, Axel Hultman gave formulas for computing expected values of permutation statistics sampled via random walks. I present analogous formulas for computing variances of these statistics involving Kronecker coefficients – certain numbers that arise in the representation theory of the symmetric group. I also explore deep connections between the study of moments of permutation statistics and the representation theory of the partition algebras, a family of algebras introduced by Paul Martin in 1991. By harnessing these partition algebras, I derive …

The Multiset Partition Algebra: Diagram-Like Bases And Representations, Alexander N. Wilson Jan 2023

The Multiset Partition Algebra: Diagram-Like Bases And Representations, Alexander N. Wilson

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

There is a classical connection between the representation theory of the symmetric group and the general linear group called Schur--Weyl Duality. Variations on this principle yield analogous connections between the symmetric group and other objects such as the partition algebra and more recently the multiset partition algebra. The partition algebra has a well-known basis indexed by graph-theoretic diagrams which allows the multiplication in the algebra to be understood visually as combinations of these diagrams. My thesis begins with a construction of an analogous basis for the multiset partition algebra. It continues with applications of this basis to constructing the irreducible …

Cayley Map Embeddings Of Complete Graphs With Even Order, Michael O'Connor Jan 2023

Cayley Map Embeddings Of Complete Graphs With Even Order, Michael O'Connor

Honors Program Theses

German mathematician Claus Michael Ringel used voltage graphs to embed complete graphs onto orientable surfaces such that none of the graph's edges cross each other. Cayley maps do the same whilst being simpler to work with. The goal is to determine the efficiency of Cayley maps in embedding complete graphs onto orientable surfaces. This article focus on complete graphs of even order with an emphasis on graphs whose orders are congruent to 6 modulo 12 and 0 modulo 12. We establish 12 distinct classes that each have their own unique qualities. Through the generalization of a previous technique, we prove …

Quasisymmetric Functions Distinguishing Trees, Jean-Christophe Aval, Karimatou Djenabou, Peter R. W. Mcnamara Jan 2023

Quasisymmetric Functions Distinguishing Trees, Jean-Christophe Aval, Karimatou Djenabou, Peter R. W. Mcnamara

Faculty Journal Articles

A famous conjecture of Stanley states that his chromatic symmetric function distinguishes trees. As a quasisymmetric analogue, we conjecture that the chromatic quasisymmetric function of Shareshian and Wachs and of Ellzey distinguishes directed trees. This latter conjecture would be implied by an affirmative answer to a question of Hasebe and Tsujie about the P-partition enumerator distinguishing posets whose Hasse diagrams are trees. They proved the case of rooted trees and our results include a generalization of their result.

Strong Homotopy Lie Algebras And Hypergraphs, Samuel J. Bevins, Marco Aldi

Undergraduate Research Posters

We study hypergraphs by attaching a nilpotent strong homotopy Lie algebra. We especially focus on hypergraph theoretic information that is encoded in the cohomology of the resulting strong homotopy Lie algebra.

The Lie Algebra Sl2(C) And Krawtchouk Polynomials, Nkosi Alexander Jan 2023

The Lie Algebra Sl2(C) And Krawtchouk Polynomials, Nkosi Alexander

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Lie algebra L = sl2(C) consists of the 2 × 2 complex matrices that have trace zero, together with the Lie bracket [y, z] = yz − zy. In this thesis we study a relationship between L and Krawtchouk polynomials. We consider a type of element in L said to be normalized semisimple. Let a, a^∗ be normalized semisimple elements that generate L. We show that a, a^∗ satisfy a pair of relations, called the Askey-Wilson relations. For a positive integer N, we consider an (N + 1)-dimensional irreducible L-module V consisting of the homogeneous polynomials in two variables …

(R1979) Permanent Of Toeplitz-Hessenberg Matrices With Generalized Fibonacci And Lucas Entries, Hacène Belbachir, Amine Belkhir, Ihab-Eddine Djellas

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In the present paper, we evaluate the permanent and determinant of some Toeplitz-Hessenberg matrices with generalized Fibonacci and generalized Lucas numbers as entries. We develop identities involving sums of products of generalized Fibonacci numbers and generalized Lucas numbers with multinomial coefficients using the matrix structure, and then we present an application of the determinant of such matrices.

Minimal Differential Graded Algebra Resolutions Related To Certain Stanley-Reisner Rings, Todd Anthony Morra Aug 2022

Minimal Differential Graded Algebra Resolutions Related To Certain Stanley-Reisner Rings, Todd Anthony Morra

All Dissertations

We investigate algebra structures on resolutions of a special class of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes. Given a simplicial complex, we define a pure simplicial complex called the purification. These complexes arise as a generalization of certain independence complexes and the resultant Stanley-Reisner rings have numerous desirable properties, e.g., they are Cohen-Macaulay. By realizing the purification in the context of work of D'alì, et al., we obtain a multi-graded, minimal free resolution of the Alexander dual ideal of the Stanley-Reisner ideal. We augment this in a standard way to obtain a resolution of the quotient ring, which is likewise minimal and multi-graded. …

Harmonious Labelings Via Cosets And Subcosets, Jared L. Painter, Holleigh C. Landers, Walker M. Mattox Jul 2022

Harmonious Labelings Via Cosets And Subcosets, Jared L. Painter, Holleigh C. Landers, Walker M. Mattox

Theory & Applications of Graphs

In [Abueida, A. and Roblee, K., More harmonious labelings of families of disjoint unions of an odd cycle and certain trees, J. Combin. Math. Combin. Comput., 115 (2020), 61-68] it is shown that the disjoint union of an odd cycle and certain paths is harmonious, and that certain starlike trees are harmonious using properties of cosets for a particular subgroup of the integers modulo m, where m is the number of edges of the graph. We expand upon these results by first exploring the numerical properties when adding values from cosets and subcosets in the integers modulo m. …

Unomaha Problem Of The Week (2021-2022 Edition), Brad Horner, Jordan M. Sahs Jun 2022

Unomaha Problem Of The Week (2021-2022 Edition), Brad Horner, Jordan M. Sahs

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

The University of Omaha math department's Problem of the Week was taken over in Fall 2019 from faculty by the authors. The structure: each semester (Fall and Spring), three problems are given per week for twelve weeks, with each problem worth ten points - mimicking the structure of arguably the most well-regarded university math competition around, the Putnam Competition, with prizes awarded to top-scorers at semester's end. The weekly competition was halted midway through Spring 2020 due to COVID-19, but relaunched again in Fall 2021, with massive changes.

Now there are three difficulty tiers to POW problems, roughly corresponding to …

Quantum Dimension Polynomials: A Networked-Numbers Game Approach, Nicholas Gaubatz May 2022

Quantum Dimension Polynomials: A Networked-Numbers Game Approach, Nicholas Gaubatz

Honors College Theses

The Networked-Numbers Game--a mathematical "game'' played on a simple graph--is incredibly accessible and yet surprisingly rich in content. The Game is known to contain deep connections to the finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras over the complex numbers. On the other hand, Quantum Dimension Polynomials (QDPs)--enumerative expressions traditionally understood through root systems--corresponding to the above Lie algebras are complicated to derive and often inaccessible to undergraduates. In this thesis, the Networked-Numbers Game is defined and some known properties are presented. Next, the significance of the QDPs as a method to count combinatorially interesting structures is relayed. Ultimately, a novel closed-form expression of …

Positivity Among P-Partition Generating Functions, Nathan R. T. Lesnevich, Peter R. W. Mcnamara Jan 2022

Positivity Among P-Partition Generating Functions, Nathan R. T. Lesnevich, Peter R. W. Mcnamara

Faculty Journal Articles

We seek simple conditions on a pair of labeled posets that determine when the difference of their (P,ω)-partition enumerators is F-positive, i.e., positive in Gessel's fundamental basis. This is a quasisymmetric analogue of the extensively studied problem of finding conditions on a pair of skew shapes that determine when the difference of their skew Schur functions is Schur-positive. We determine necessary conditions and separate sufficient conditions for F-positivity, and show that a broad operation for combining posets preserves positivity properties. We conclude with classes of posets for which we have conditions that are both necessary and …

Counting The Moduli Space Of Pentagons On Finite Projective Planes, Maxwell Hosler Jan 2022

Counting The Moduli Space Of Pentagons On Finite Projective Planes, Maxwell Hosler

Senior Independent Study Theses

Finite projective planes are finite incidence structures which generalize the concept of the real projective plane. In this paper, we consider structures of points embedded in these planes. In particular, we investigate pentagons in general position, meaning no three vertices are colinear. We are interested in properties of these pentagons that are preserved by collineation of the plane, and so can be conceived as properties of the equivalence class of polygons up to collineation as a whole. Amongst these are the symmetries of a pentagon and the periodicity of the pentagon under the pentagram map, and a generalization of …

Irreducibility And Galois Groups Of Random Polynomials, Hanson Hao, Eli Navarro, Henri Stern Jul 2021

Irreducibility And Galois Groups Of Random Polynomials, Hanson Hao, Eli Navarro, Henri Stern

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

In 2015, I. Rivin introduced an effective method to bound the number of irreducible integral polynomials with fixed degree d and height at most N. In this paper, we give a brief summary of this result and discuss the precision of Rivin's arguments for special classes of polynomials. We also give elementary proofs of classic results on Galois groups of cubic trinomials.

Directed Graphs Of The Finite Tropical Semiring, Caden G. Zonnefeld Jul 2021

Directed Graphs Of The Finite Tropical Semiring, Caden G. Zonnefeld

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

The focus of this paper lies at the intersection of the fields of tropical algebra and graph theory. In particular the interaction between tropical semirings and directed graphs is investigated. Originally studied by Lipvoski, the directed graph of a ring is useful in identifying properties within the algebraic structure of a ring. This work builds off research completed by Beyer and Fields, Hausken and Skinner, and Ang and Shulte in constructing directed graphs from rings. However, we will investigate the relationship (x, y)→(min(x, y), x+y) as defined by the operations of tropical algebra and applied to tropical semirings.

On The Hamiltonicity Of Subgroup Lattices, Nicholas Charles Fleece May 2021

On The Hamiltonicity Of Subgroup Lattices, Nicholas Charles Fleece

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

In this paper we discuss the Hamiltonicity of the subgroup lattices of

different classes of groups. We provide sufficient conditions for the

Hamiltonicity of the subgroup lattices of cube-free abelian groups. We also

prove the non-Hamiltonicity of the subgroup lattices of dihedral and

dicyclic groups. We disprove a conjecture on non-abelian p-groups by

producing an infinite family of non-abelian p-groups with Hamiltonian

subgroup lattices. Finally, we provide a list of the Hamiltonicity of the

subgroup lattices of every finite group up to order 35 barring two groups.

Classification Of Cayley Rose Window Graphs, Angsuman Das, Arnab Mandal Apr 2021

Classification Of Cayley Rose Window Graphs, Angsuman Das, Arnab Mandal

Theory & Applications of Graphs

Rose window graphs are a family of tetravalent graphs, introduced by Steve Wilson. Following it, Kovacs, Kutnar and Marusic classified the edge-transitive rose window graphs and Dobson, Kovacs and Miklavic characterized the vertex transitive rose window graphs. In this paper, we classify the Cayley rose window graphs.

Mathematical Magic: A Study Of Number Puzzles, Nicasio M. Velez Jan 2021

Mathematical Magic: A Study Of Number Puzzles, Nicasio M. Velez

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

Within this paper, we will briefly review the history of a collection of number puzzles which take the shape of squares, polygons, and polyhedra in both modular and nonmodular arithmetic. Among other results, we develop construction techniques for solutions of both Modulo and regular Magic Squares. For other polygons in nonmodular arithmetic, specifically of order 3, we present a proof of why there are only four Magic Triangles using linear algebra, disprove the existence of the Magic Tetrahedron in two ways, and utilizing the infamous 3-SUM combinatorics problem we disprove the existence of the Magic Octahedron.

On Rank-Two And Affine Cluster Algebras, Feiyang Lin Jan 2021

On Rank-Two And Affine Cluster Algebras, Feiyang Lin

HMC Senior Theses

Motivated by existing results about the Kronecker cluster algebra, this thesis is concerned with two families of cluster algebras, which are two different ways of generalizing the Kronecker case: rank-two cluster algebras, and cluster algebras of type An,1. Regarding rank-two cluster algebras, our main result is a conjectural bijection that would prove the equivalence of two combinatorial formulas for cluster variables of rank-two skew-symmetric cluster algebras. We identify a technical result that implies the bijection and make partial progress towards its proof. We then shift gears to study certain power series which arise as limits of ratios of …

Cayley Map Embeddings Of Complete Graphs, Miriam Scheinblum Jan 2021

Cayley Map Embeddings Of Complete Graphs, Miriam Scheinblum

Honors Program Theses

This paper looks at Cayley map embeddings of complete graphs on orientable surfaces. Cayley maps constrain graph embeddings to those with cyclical edge rotations, so optimal embeddings on surfaces with the minimum genus may not always be possible. We explore instances when Cayley maps succeed at optimally embedding complete graphs, and when optimal embeddings are not possible, we determine how close to optimal they can get by finding vertex rotations that result in the smallest possible genus. Many of the complete graphs we consider have prime numbers of vertices, so for each complete graph Kn we focus on mappings with …

Counting Conjugacy Classes Of Elements Of Finite Order In Compact Exceptional Groups, Qidong He Jan 2021

Counting Conjugacy Classes Of Elements Of Finite Order In Compact Exceptional Groups, Qidong He

Honors Theses

Given a compact exceptional group $G$ and $m,s\in\mathbb{N}$, let $N(G,m)$ be the number of conjugacy classes of elements of order $m$ in $G$, and $N(G,m,s)$ the number of such classes whose elements have $s$ distinct eigenvalues. In string theory, the problem of enumerating certain classes of vacua in the string landscape can be rephrased in terms of the study of these quantities. We develop unified combinatorial algorithms based on Burnside's Lemma that can be used to compute both quantities for each of the five compact exceptional groups. Thus, we provide a combinatorial, alternative method to that of Djoković and extend …

The Name Tag Problem, Christian Carley Nov 2020

The Name Tag Problem, Christian Carley

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

The Name Tag Problem is a thought experiment that, when formalized, serves as an introduction to the concept of an orthomorphism of $\Zn$. Orthomorphisms are a type of group permutation and their graphs are used to construct mutually orthogonal Latin squares, affine planes and other objects. This paper walks through the formalization of the Name Tag Problem and its linear solutions, which center around modular arithmetic. The characterization of which linear mappings give rise to these solutions developed in this paper can be used to calculate the exact number of linear orthomorphisms for any additive group Z/nZ, which is demonstrated …

Some Generalizations Of Classical Integer Sequences Arising In Combinatorial Representation Theory, Sasha Verona Malone Oct 2020

Some Generalizations Of Classical Integer Sequences Arising In Combinatorial Representation Theory, Sasha Verona Malone

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

There exists a natural correspondence between the bases for a given finite-dimensional representation of a complex semisimple Lie algebra and a certain collection of finite edge-colored ranked posets, laid out by Donnelly, et al. in, for instance, [Don03]. In this correspondence, the Serre relations on the Chevalley generators of the given Lie algebra are realized as conditions on coefficients assigned to poset edges. These conditions are the so-called diamond, crossing, and structure relations (hereinafter DCS relations.) New representation constructions of Lie algebras may thus be obtained by utilizing edge-colored ranked posets. Of particular combinatorial interest are those representations whose corresponding …

On The Mysteries Of Interpolation Jack Polynomials, Havi Ellers Jan 2020

On The Mysteries Of Interpolation Jack Polynomials, Havi Ellers

HMC Senior Theses

Interpolation Jack polynomials are certain symmetric polynomials in N variables with coefficients that are rational functions in another parameter k, indexed by partitions of length at most N. Introduced first in 1996 by F. Knop and S. Sahi, and later studied extensively by Sahi, Knop-Sahi, and Okounkov-Olshanski, they have interesting connections to the representation theory of Lie algebras. Given an interpolation Jack polynomial we would like to differentiate it with respect to the variable k and write the result as a linear combination of other interpolation Jack polynomials where the coefficients are again rational functions in k. In this …

Algebraic And Geometric Properties Of Hierarchical Models, Aida Maraj Jan 2020

Algebraic And Geometric Properties Of Hierarchical Models, Aida Maraj

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

In this dissertation filtrations of ideals arising from hierarchical models in statistics related by a group action are are studied. These filtrations lead to ideals in polynomial rings in infinitely many variables, which require innovative tools. Regular languages and finite automata are used to prove and explicitly compute the rationality of some multivariate power series that record important quantitative information about the ideals. Some work regarding Markov bases for non-reducible models is shown, together with advances in the polyhedral geometry of binary hierarchical models.

Geometry Of Linear Subspace Arrangements With Connections To Matroid Theory, William Trok Jan 2020

Geometry Of Linear Subspace Arrangements With Connections To Matroid Theory, William Trok

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

This dissertation is devoted to the study of the geometric properties of subspace configurations, with an emphasis on configurations of points. One distinguishing feature is the widespread use of techniques from Matroid Theory and Combinatorial Optimization. In part we generalize a theorem of Edmond's about partitions of matroids in independent subsets. We then apply this to establish a conjectured bound on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a set of fat points.

We then study how the dimension of an ideal of point changes when intersected with a generic fat subspace. In particular we introduce the concept of a ``very unexpected hypersurface'' …
