Another such mathematical revolution occurred between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and was focused primarily on the calculus. This change was a rejection of the mathematics of powerful techniques and novel results in favor of the mathematics of clear definitions and rigorous proofs. Because this change, however important it may have been for mathematicians themselves, is not often discussed by historians and philosophers, its revolutionary character is not widely understood. This thesis consists of four chapters.The inpetus for the work in Chapter 1 comes from the concept of 'conditional atom' introduced by ileveu (191. Here, using conditional atoms we generalize the concept of nenatomicity of measures. (We confine ourselves to probability measures). We obtain generalizations of results on non atomic measures in [1), [3] and of Liapounoff's theorem. The results in Chapter 2 have their origins in a paper by Boylan [7]. A characterization of a class of totally nonnegative matrices whose inverses are M-matrices is given. It is then shown that if A is nonnegative of order n and A^-1 is an M-matrix, then the almost principal minors of A of all orders are nonnegative.

The problem of linear dynamic estimation, its solution as developed by Kalman and Bucy, and interpretations, properties and illustrations of that solution are discussed. The central problem considered is the estimation of the system state vector X, describing a linear dynamic system governed by

for observations of Y (system output), where V is a random observation-corrupting process, and U is a random system driving process.

An extension of the Kalman-Bucy filter to estimation in the absence of priori knowledge of the random process U and V is developed and illustrated.

The use of such results is made by considering the expression for the field of a cone due to a ring source excitation and then obtaining the solution of a new field propagated by a given pulse.

Also, the electric and magnetic components for these new fields are derived along with the expression for the radiated energy.

A New Test For Normality, Richard Leroy Roller

This paper presents a new test for normality which is based on a complete characterization of the normal distribution. Motivation for the test is given in terms of a proof of this characterization. The test is derived and evaluated by computer-simulated sampling from alternative distributions. The empirical powers of the test generated from such samplings are tabled and compared to nine commonly used tests. Evaluation of the proposed test is discussed and further avenues of investigation are suggested.

This paper presents three definitions of orthogonality in normed spaces. Each definition is shown equivalent to the inner product being zero when restricted to an inner product space. The definitions arise from such properties in two space as the diagonals of a rectangle being equal and the Pythagorean Theorem. The third definition shows that the idea of an inner product can be generalized under certain conditions.
