The current data-taking phase of the DØ detector at Fermilab, called Run II, is designed to aid the search for the Higgs Boson. The neutral Higgs is postulated to have a mass of 117 GeV. One of the channels promising the presence of this hypothetical particle is through the decay of b-quark into a muon. The process of identifying a b-quark in a jet using muon as a reference is b-tagging with a muon tag.

An image is a recorded replication of natural scene or objects using suitable sensor and recording media. The visual quality of the recorded image may be enhanced using various types of low-level processing namely noise smoothing, contrast enhancement. The images of the same scene recorded by several sensors reveal more inforination but in their own respective ways. This advantage of multi-sensor imaging system is real- ized through the fusion of the multimodal images. We investigate approximability of both maximum and minimum linear ordering problems (MAX-LOP and MIN-LOP) and several related problems such as the well known feedback set problems, acyclie subdigraph problem and several others and their variants.We show that both MAX-LOP and MIN-LOP are strongly NP-complete, and MIN- LOP, MIN-QAP(S) (a special case of minimum quadratic assignment problem) and MIN-W-FAS are equivalent with respect to strict-reduction. The strict-equivalence is also established among these problems as well as MIN-W-FVS, with weights on arcs/vertices bounded by a polynomial, and the unweighted versions of the feedback set. problems. The objective of this research is to demonstrate pattern recognition tools such as decision trees (DTs) and neural networks that will improve and automate the design of relay protection functions in electric power systems. Protection functions that will benefit from the research include relay algorithms for high voltage transformer protection (TP) and for high impedance fault (HIF) detection. A methodology, which uses DTs and wavelet analysis to distinguish transformer internal faults from other conditions that are easily mistaken for internal faults, has been developed. In this thesis we concentrate on properties of cryptographically significant Boolean functions.The techniques are mainly combinstorial and provide new resulta on enumeration and construction of such functions. Initially we concentrate on a partieular subset of Boolean functions called the symmetric Boolean functions. A closed form expression for the Walsh transform of an arbitrary symmetric Boolean function is presented. We completely characterize the symmetric functions with maximum nonlinearity and show that the maximum nonlinearity of n-variable symmetrie function can be 2n-1-2[n-1l2], Moreover, new classes of symmetric balanced and symmetric correlation immune functions are considered.We provide a randomised heuristic to construct balanced …

The theory of mechanism design originated in the mid 1930s with the work of Lange[27], Lerner (28] and Hayek [20] on market socialism'.
