Counting Conjugates Of Colored Compositions, Jesus Omar Sistos Barron
Counting Conjugates Of Colored Compositions, Jesus Omar Sistos Barron
Honors College Theses
The properties of n-color compositions have been studied parallel to those of regular compositions. The conjugate of a composition as defined by MacMahon, however, does not translate well to n-color compositions, and there is currently no established analogous concept. We propose a conjugation rule for cyclic n-color compositions. We also count the number of self-conjugates under these rules and establish a couple of connections between these and regular compositions.
First-Order Geometric Integer-Valued Autoregressive Model With Covariates, Adisak Seedamad
First-Order Geometric Integer-Valued Autoregressive Model With Covariates, Adisak Seedamad
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In this thesis, we propose two integer-valued time series consisting of (1) the single parameter first-order geometric integer-valued autoregressive (SGINAR(1)) model with covariates and (2) the first-order geometric integer-valued autoregressive GINAR(1) model with covariates. In our study, we obtain the innovation distribution using stationary properties and obtain moment properties of two models. In addition, we obtain parameter estimation by using the conditional least squares (CLS) method and the penalized conditional least squares (PCLS) method. Finally, we conduct simulation studies and apply to real data.

This dissertation introduces methodologies that combine machine learning models with time-series analysis to tackle data analysis challenges in varied fields. The first study enhances the traditional cumulative sum control charts with machine learning models to leverage their predictive power for better detection of process shifts, applying this advanced control chart to monitor hospital readmission rates. The second project develops multi-layer models for predicting chemical concentrations from ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy data, specifically addressing the challenge of analyzing chemicals with a wide range of concentrations. The third study presents a new method for detecting multiple changepoints in autocorrelated ordinal time series, using the …
Bayesian Analyses For Time-Varying Data And Opinion Dynamics, Torin Quinlivan
Bayesian Analyses For Time-Varying Data And Opinion Dynamics, Torin Quinlivan
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
We consider Bayesian analyses for time-varying data from the opinion dynamics in social networks and the processes of sensorimotor learning. Firstly, understanding the underlying opinions of social media users is a difficult process, as they must be understood filtered through the messages sent. To understand how to best estimate the latent opinions, we use a Bayesian approach to estimate various characteristics of the users and the network. We present a model for using Bayesian methods for this problem, along with a simulation study to demonstrate effectiveness. Secondly, incentivization with punishments or rewards may affect human skill learning. To investigate the …

This study explored 10 prospective teachers’ (PTs’) understanding of the area of a rectangular region using square and non-square rectangular area-units. In an hour-long interview, each PT was first asked to explain how they would find the area of a given rectangular region in terms of a non-square notecard. For several PTs, this task prompted discussion of a square unit defined by the edge of the notecard. In a second task, PTs were presented with a rectangular array of squares and were asked to explain to a fictional child why multiplying length times width does not count the top left …
Rado Numbers For Two Systems Of Linear Equations, Anthony Glackin
Rado Numbers For Two Systems Of Linear Equations, Anthony Glackin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For any positive integer n and any equation E of either the form x1+x2+· · ·+xn = x0 or x1 + x2 + n = x0, the two-color Rado number R2(E) is the least integer such that any 2-coloring of the natural numbers 1 through R2(E) will contain a monochromatic solution to E. Let Ek be a system of k equations of the aforementioned form, where Ei represents the ith equation in Ek and the set I = {1, 2, . . . , k} is the set of indices of these equations. This thesis shows that the two-color Rado …
Principal Component Analysis With Application To Credit Card Data, Elenor Cain
Principal Component Analysis With Application To Credit Card Data, Elenor Cain
Schultz-Werth Award Papers
Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is a type of dimension reduction technique used in data analysis to process the data before making a model. In general, dimension reduction allows analysts to make conclusions about large data sets by reducing the number of variables while retaining as much information as possible. Using the numerical variables from a data set, PCA aims to compute a smaller set of uncorrelated variables, called principal components, that account for a majority of the variability from the data. The purpose of this paper is to understand PCA and determine which principal components should be kept from a …

Implementation Of 1/2-Approximation Path Cover Algorithm And Its Empirical Analysis, Junyuan Lin, Guangpen Ren
Implementation Of 1/2-Approximation Path Cover Algorithm And Its Empirical Analysis, Junyuan Lin, Guangpen Ren
Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works
In this paper, we demonstrate a deterministic algorithm that approximates the optimal path cover on various graphs and networks derived from a wide range of real world problems. Based on the 1-Approximation Path Cover Algorithm by Moran et al., we first organize the original algorithm into two versions - one with redundant edge removal and one without. To compare the two versions of algorithms, we prove the number of redundant edges for any general graphs to analyze the effects of edge removal. We also analyze theoretical guarantees of the two algorithms. To test the time complexity and performance, we conduct …

This study explores the experiences of three Networked Improvement Communities (NICs) within mathematics departments as they work to critically transform their introductory mathematics programs. Drawing on the framework of dominant and critical axes of equity, we identify three key tensions experienced by the NICs: identity neutrality versus identity centrality, power over versus power with, and students as novices versus students as experts. These tensions are framed as productive enactments of working to change systems from within, highlighting the challenges and opportunities inherent in navigating the liminal space of nepantla. We argue that engaging with these tensions is crucial for fostering …
Machine Learning Approaches For Cyberbullying Detection, Roland Fiagbe
Machine Learning Approaches For Cyberbullying Detection, Roland Fiagbe
Data Science and Data Mining
Cyberbullying refers to the act of bullying using electronic means and the internet. In recent years, this act has been identifed to be a major problem among young people and even adults. It can negatively impact one’s emotions and lead to adverse outcomes like depression, anxiety, harassment, and suicide, among others. This has led to the need to employ machine learning techniques to automatically detect cyberbullying and prevent them on various social media platforms. In this study, we want to analyze the combination of some Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithms (such as Bag-of-Words and TFIDF) with some popular machine learning …
Exploring Loss Functions In Machine Learning, Yujie Wang
Exploring Loss Functions In Machine Learning, Yujie Wang
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The loss function plays a critical role in machine learning. It is fundamental in training, evaluating, and optimizing machine learning models, directly impacting their effectiveness and efficiency in solving specific tasks. We explore three new loss functions and their applications. Softmax Cross-Entropy Loss, stands as a prevalent choice in neural network classification tasks. It treats all misclassifications uniformly. However, multi-class classification problems often have many semantically similar classes. We should expect that these semantically similar classes will have similar parameter vectors. We introduce a weighted loss function, the tree loss as a drop-in replacement for the cross entropy loss. The …

This study examined student-generated metaphors comparing food to math as a means of accessing and assessing components of prekindergarten through Grade 8 students’ (N = 306) mathematical disposition. Previous research provided insight into predominantly affective components of older students’ mathematical disposition (i.e. Grade 4 through college). However, we extend these findings to include nonaffective components and younger students. Our study highlights the value in conceptualizing mathematical disposition as the sum of three mental functions, namely cognitive (e.g., mental processes such as reasoning), affective (e.g., attitudes, feelings, beliefs about mathematics or oneself as a learner), and conative (e.g., effort, grit, …
Reducing Generalization Error In Multiclass Classification Through Factorized Cross Entropy Loss, Oleksandr Horban
Reducing Generalization Error In Multiclass Classification Through Factorized Cross Entropy Loss, Oleksandr Horban
CMC Senior Theses
This paper introduces Factorized Cross Entropy Loss, a novel approach to multiclass classification which modifies the standard cross entropy loss by decomposing its weight matrix W into two smaller matrices, U and V, where UV is a low rank approximation of W. Factorized Cross Entropy Loss reduces generalization error from the conventional O( sqrt(k / n) ) to O( sqrt(r / n) ), where k is the number of classes, n is the sample size, and r is the reduced inner dimension of U and V.

Bridging Theory And Application: A Journey From Minkowski's Theorem To Ggh Cryptosystems In Lattice Theory, Danzhe Chen
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis provides a comprehensive exploration of lattice theory, emphasizing its dual significance in both theoretical mathematics and practical applications, particularly within computational complexity and cryptography. The study begins with an in-depth examination of the fundamental properties of lattices and progresses to intricate lattice-based problems such as the Shortest Vector Problem (SVP) and the Closest Vector Problem (CVP). These problems are analyzed for their computational depth and linked to the Subset Sum Problem (SSP) to highlight their critical roles in understanding computational hardness. The narrative then transitions to the practical applications of these theories in cryptography, evaluating the shift from …

We give a classification of Legendrian torus links. Along the way, we give the first classification of infinite families of Legendrian links where some smooth symmetries of the link cannot be realized by Legendrian isotopies. We also give the first family of links that are non-destabilizable but do not have maximal Thurston-Bennequin invariant and observe a curious distribution of Legendrian torus knots that can be realized as the components of a Legendrian torus link. This classification of Legendrian torus links leads to a classification of transversal torus links.
We also give a classification of Legendrian and transversal cable links of …

CGU Theses & Dissertations
One metric used to measure classification performance in machine learning is F-beta score. The objective in this thesis is to improve the average F-b score computed in classifying shark data into shark behaviors, namely; Resting, Swimming, Feeding, and Non-Directed Motion (NDM). Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) and Adaptive Synthetic Sampling (ADASYN) are utilized to balance the data, from which pre-processed Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), Walsh-Hadamard Transform (WHT), and Autocorrelation (AC) features are extracted then classified using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and K-Nearest Neighbors (K-NN). All the combinations of the two balancing techniques, the three feature types, and the two machine …

This paper presents novel concepts including stratified single-valued neutrosophic soft topogenous (stratified svns-topogenous), stratified single-valued neutrosophic soft filter (stratified svns-filter), stratified single-valued neutrosophic soft quasi uniformity (stratified svnsq-uniformity) and stratified single-valued neutrosophic soft quasi proximity (stratified svnsq-proximity). Additionally, we present the idea of single-valued neutrosophic soft topogenous structures, formed by integrating svns-topogenous with svns-filter, and discuss their properties. Furthermore, we explore the connections between these single-valued neutrosophic soft topological structures and their corresponding stratifications.

A Compact Exploration Of Turiyam Neutrosophic Competition Graphs, Takaaki Fujita, Florentin Smarandache
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
Graph theory, a branch of mathematics, examines relationships between entities using vertices and edges. Within this field, Uncertain Graph Theory has emerged to model uncertainties in real-world networks. A notable concept in this area is the competition graph, which captures interactions by connecting vertices that “compete” for the same neighbor, represented by directed edges indicating common neighbors in a digraph. This brief paper introduces the concept of the Generalized Turiyam Neutrosophic Competition Graph and explores its relationships with other graph classes.

Flow past bluff bodies like square cylinders is important in engineering applications, but flow patterns behind staggered cylinder arrangements remain poorly understood. Existing studies have focused on tandem or side-by-side configurations, while offset orientations have received less attention. The aim of this paper is to numerically investigate flow dynamics and force characteristics behind two offset square cylinders using the single relaxation time lattice Boltzmann method. The effects of changing both the Reynolds number (Re = 1-150) and gap spacing ratio (g* = 0.5-5) between the cylinders are analyzed. Instantaneous vorticity contours, time histories of drag and lift coefficients, power spectra …

The article titled "Shadow hands: Solutions for Fermi Questions, September 2024" discusses the enigmatic statement made by authors Dave Lynch and Bill Livingston in their book "Color and Light in Nature." The statement explains that the fuzzy outer edge of a shadow, known as the penumbra, is always a constant fraction of about 1/112 of its width divided by its distance from the object casting the shadow. The article provides a solution to Question 1, which asks for an explanation of this statement using elementary geometry. It also offers a solution to Question 2, which asks why the shadow of …

The Steiner distance of a set of vertices in a graph is the fewest number of edges in any connected subgraph containing those vertices. The order-k Steiner distance hypermatrix of a graph is the n-dimensional array indexed by vertices, whose entries are the Steiner distances of their corresponding indices. In the case of k = 2, this reduces to the classical distance matrix of a graph. Graham and Pollak showed in 1971 that the determinant of the distance matrix of a tree only depends on its number n of vertices. Here, we show that the hyperdeterminant of the Steiner distance …

The Direct And Inverse Scattering Problems For The Third-Order Operator, Ivan Toledo
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
We consider the full-line direct and inverse scattering problems for the third-order ordinary differential equation containing two potentials decaying sufficiently fast at infinity. The direct scattering problem consists of the determination of the scattering data set when the two potentials are known. The scattering data set is made up of the corresponding scattering coefficients and the bound-state information. On the other hand, the inverse scattering problem involves the recovery of the two potentials when the scattering data set is available. We formulate the inverse scattering problem via a related Riemann--Hilbert problem on the complex plane. We describe the recovery of …
Bicategorical Character Theory, Travis Wheeler
Bicategorical Character Theory, Travis Wheeler
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
In 2007, Nora Ganter and Mikhail Kapranov defined the categorical trace, which they used to define the categorical character of a 2-representation. In 2008, Kate Ponto defined a shadow functor for bicategories. With the shadow functor, Dr. Ponto defined the bicategorical trace, which is a generalization of the symmetric monoidal trace for bicategories. How are these two notions of trace related to one another? We’ve used bicategorical traces to define a character theory for 2-representations, and the categorical character is an example.
