An Integration Of Art And Mathematics, Henry Jaakola
An Integration Of Art And Mathematics, Henry Jaakola
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Mathematics and art are seemingly unrelated fields, requiring different skills and mindsets. Indeed, these disciplines may be difficult to understand for those not immersed in the field. Through art, math can be more relatable and understandable, and with math, art can be imbued with a different kind of order and structure. This project explores the intersection and integration of math and art, and culminates in a physical interdisciplinary product. Using the Padovan Sequence of numbers as a theoretical basis, two artworks are created with different media and designs, yielding unique results. Through these pieces, the order and beauty of number …
On Coherence And The Geometry Of Certain Families Of Lattices, David Booth Kogan
On Coherence And The Geometry Of Certain Families Of Lattices, David Booth Kogan
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The coherence of a lattice is, roughly speaking, a measure of non-orthogonality of its minimal vectors. It was introduced to lattices (by analogy with frame theory) by L. Fukshansky and others as a possible route to gaining insight into packing density, a central problem in lattice theory. In this work, we introduce the related measure of average coherence, explore connections between packing density and coherence, and prove several properties of certain families of lattices, most notably nearly orthogonal lattices, cyclotomic lattices, and cyclic lattices.
On Multiplication Groups Of Quasigroups, Ahmed Al Fares
On Multiplication Groups Of Quasigroups, Ahmed Al Fares
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Quasigroups are algebraic structures in which divisibility is always defined. In this thesis we investigate quasigroups using a group-theoretic approach. We first construct a family of quasigroups which behave in a group-like fashion. We then focus on the multiplication groups of quasigroups, which have first appeared in the work of A. A. Albert. These permutation groups allow us to study quasigroups using group theory. We also explore how certain natural operations on quasigroups affect the associated multiplication groups. Along the way we take the time and special care to pose specific questions that may lead to further work in the …
An Exponential Formula For Random Variables Generated By Multiple Brownian Motions, Maximilian Lawrence Baroi
An Exponential Formula For Random Variables Generated By Multiple Brownian Motions, Maximilian Lawrence Baroi
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The frozen operator has been used to develop Dyson-series like representations for random variables generated by classical Brownian motion, Lévy processes and fractional Brownian with Hurst index greater than 1/2.The relationship between the conditional expectation of a random variable (or fractional conditional expectation in the case of fractional Brownian motion)and that variable's Dyson-series like representation is the exponential formula. These results had not yet been extended to either fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index less than 1/2, or d-dimensional Brownian motion. The former is still out of reach, but we hope our review of stochastic integration for fractional Brownian motion …
On The Geometry Of The Multiplier Space Of ℓPA, Christopher Felder, Raymond Cheng
On The Geometry Of The Multiplier Space Of ℓPA, Christopher Felder, Raymond Cheng
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
For p ∊ (1, ∞)\ {2}, some properties of the space Mp of multipliers on ℓpA are derived. In particular, the failure of the weak parallelogram laws and the Pythagorean inequalities is demonstrated for Mp. It is also shown that extremal multipliers on the ℓpA spaces are exactly the monomials, in stark contrast to the p = 2 case.
Population Persistence And Disease Invasion In Heterogenous Networks, Poroshat Yazdanbakhshghahyazi
Population Persistence And Disease Invasion In Heterogenous Networks, Poroshat Yazdanbakhshghahyazi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The problem of understanding how biological species and infectious diseases can persist and spread in heterogeneous networks has brought a wide attention, recently highlighted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This dissertation investigates the connection between the structures of heterogeneous networks and population persistence/disease invasion. To do so, we propose a new index for network heterogeneity by employing the Laplacian matrix of population dispersal and its corresponding group inverse. The network growth rate and reproduction number can be evaluated using the network average and the network heterogeneity index as the first and second order approximation, respectively. We also illustrate the impact …
A New Non-Inheriting Homogeneous Solution Of The Einstein-Maxwell Equations With Cosmological Term, Ian M. Anderson, Charles G. Torre
A New Non-Inheriting Homogeneous Solution Of The Einstein-Maxwell Equations With Cosmological Term, Ian M. Anderson, Charles G. Torre
Publications
We find a new homogeneous solution to the Einstein-Maxwell equations with a cos- mological term. The spacetime manifold is R × S3. The spacetime metric admits a simply transitive isometry group G = R × SU(2) and is Petrov type I. The spacetime is geodesically complete and globally hyperbolic. The electromagnetic field is non- null and non-inheriting: it is only invariant with respect to the SU(2) subgroup and is time-dependent in a stationary reference frame.

The Distribution Of Energies, Dung Tien Do
The Distribution Of Energies, Dung Tien Do
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
The application of calculus is of great importance in physics. It is used to calculate energy, acceleration, velocity, and much more. In this paper, to calculate the internal energy of an ideal gas (gas molecules) we will use Maxwell-Boltzmann statistical distribution based entirely on calculus. The technique represents the mathematical concept that depends on integration and substitution in calculus to solve a problem.

The Effects Of Effluent Discharge Into The Santa Fé River, João Vito Bezerra Dragone
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
The discharge of effluents into rivers is something that has occurred a lot throughout our history, rivers like the Mississippi River and the Tiete River (São Paulo, Brazil) have been targets for many years. Therefore, in this paper I choose to show, through hard data and some assumptions, the impact of sewage dumping in water bodies, in this case the Santa Fé River, Florida and the reason why we should avoid dumping these effluents into the rivers.
The Use Of Calculus To Determine Efficient Fertilizer Levels For Crop Production, Cole Loadholtz
The Use Of Calculus To Determine Efficient Fertilizer Levels For Crop Production, Cole Loadholtz
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
For this project, I wanted to incorporate calculus into agriculture and environmental science methods. More in detail, the problem used asked for the maximum levels of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) that would be best for a current crop yield. This allowed incorporating partial derivatives, and critical points to find the maximum values for the equation. The results show that in order to demonstrate maximum crop yield production, the levels of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) were to be both at 2, with the correct corresponding units. The drawback from this problem is that although the problem showed effective nitrogen …
Converting Velocity Pressure Into Cubic Feet Per Minute (Cfm), Darrian Robinette
Converting Velocity Pressure Into Cubic Feet Per Minute (Cfm), Darrian Robinette
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
Almost every building in the United States has a HVAC (Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system that relies on balancing Velocity Pressure and calculated CFM to properly control the atmosphere in a building. This is ensured and tested by Field Engineers whose job it is to maintain the efficiency and proper output of these HVAC systems. These systems are used to improve indoor air quality, control moisture and condensation, and contaminants while satisfying comfort needs of occupants. Just with any mechanical system, HVAC systems function efficiently with multiple formulas derived from calculus and physics. Every building is equipped with a …
Volume And Cost Of Longboard Using Aircrete, Mira Stimac
Volume And Cost Of Longboard Using Aircrete, Mira Stimac
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
This project utilizes integral calculus to find the volume of a longboard-style surfboard. The cost for using AirCrete as the material for the longboard will then be calculated. Due to the longboard's shape, the longboard is divided into four sections, and the volume of each is found. The final volume for the longboard with the measurements provided is approximately 3821 cubic inches. The cost of making the longboard out of AirCrete was then calculated by using ratios. The final cost for the longboard is $4.70.
Monitoring Drug Concentration In Emergency Medicine, Andrew Woods
Monitoring Drug Concentration In Emergency Medicine, Andrew Woods
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
The careful monitoring of a drug’s concentration in the body of a patient is of the utmost importance in modern medicine. Many of the lifesaving medications that are administered in an emergency medicine environment have a narrow window of efficacy. This effective concentration is in an ever-changing state, as the body processes and eliminates exogenous compounds that are introduced to maintain homeostasis. To ensure the proper treatment and/or management of ailments, special attention must be given to the concentration of a given drug in the body as time progresses. These changing concentrations can be evaluated and tracked using the mathematical …

Internal Combustion Engines: Modeling Internal Temperature As A Function Of Time, Garrett Fandrich
Internal Combustion Engines: Modeling Internal Temperature As A Function Of Time, Garrett Fandrich
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
Just like any thermodynamic system, combustion engines must be cooled to eliminate friction due to heat. Without proper cooling, internal components, such as connecting rods, rod bearings, and pistons can be severely damaged due to thermal expansion, leading to severe damage to the engine block or outright catastrophic failure. Modern engines are cooled using coolant, which flows through internal passageways within the engine block to pull heat away from the system. The use of coolant and external components, such as a water pump, radiator, and thermostat allow an engine to efficiently warm to standard operating temperature and remain at said …
Application Of Calculus In The Elastic Curve (Deflection), Ryan Hillock
Application Of Calculus In The Elastic Curve (Deflection), Ryan Hillock
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
Beams are extremely important structure members that are used in nearly every application where significant loads need to be supported. In mechanical and civil engineering being able to appropriately design beams to withstand the expected-to-be loads is a foundational skill. Proper beam design is what keeps large machines from failing and buildings from collapsing. One important aspect of beam design to consider is the deflection of the beam due to the applied loads. It is often useful to determine the deflection along any given point in the beam in order to make sure the loaded beam does not displace any …
Relative Primeness And Borel Partition Properties For Equivalence Relations, John D. Clemens
Relative Primeness And Borel Partition Properties For Equivalence Relations, John D. Clemens
Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We introduce a notion of relative primeness for equivalence relations, strengthening the notion of non-reducibility, and show for many standard benchmark equivalence relations that non-reducibility may be strengthened to relative primeness. We introduce several analogues of cardinal properties for Borel equivalence relations, including the notion of a prime equivalence relation and Borel partition properties on quotient spaces. In particular, we introduce a notion of Borel weak compactness, and characterize partition properties for the equivalence relations 2 and 1. We also discuss dichotomies related to primeness, and see that many natural questions related to Borel reducibility of equivalence …

Joint Full-Waveform Ground-Penetrating Radar And Electrical Resistivity Inversion Applied To Field Data Acquired On The Surface, Diego Domenzain, John Bradford, Jodi Mead
Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We exploit the different but complementary data sensitivities of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and electrical resistivity (ER) by applying a multiphysics, multiparameter, simultaneous 2.5D joint inversion without invoking petrophysical relationships. Our method joins full-waveform inversion (FWI) GPR with adjoint derived ER sensitivities on the same computational domain. We incorporate a stable source estimation routine into the FWI-GPR. We apply our method in a controlled alluvial aquifer using only surface-acquired data. The site exhibits a shallow groundwater boundary and unconsolidated heterogeneous alluvial deposits. We compare our recovered parameters to individual FWI-GPR and ER results, and we compare them to log measurements of …

Vectorization of art involves turning free-hand drawings into vector graphics that can be further scaled and manipulated. In this paper, we explore the concept of vectorization of line drawings and study multiple approaches that attempt to achieve this in the most accurate way possible. We utilize a software called StrokeStrip to discuss the different mathematics behind the parameterization and fitting involved in the drawings.
The Infinity Conundrum: Understanding Topics In Set Theory And The Continuum Hypothesis, Sabrina Grace Helck
The Infinity Conundrum: Understanding Topics In Set Theory And The Continuum Hypothesis, Sabrina Grace Helck
Senior Independent Study Theses
This project is concerned with articulating the necessary background in order to understand the famous result of the undecidability of the continuum hypothesis. The first chapter of this independent study discusses the foundations of set theory, stating fundamental definitions and theorems that will be used throughout the remainder of the project. The second chapter focuses on ordinal and cardinal numbers which will directly relate to the final chapter. First, there is a clear explanation of the notion of order and what it means for a set to be well-ordered. Then ordinal numbers are defined and some properties are listed and …

Highlights Generation For Tennis Matches Using Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing And Audio Analysis, Alon Liberman
Senior Independent Study Theses
This project uses computer vision, natural language processing and audio analysis to automatize the highlights generation task for tennis matches. Computer vision techniques such as camera shot detection, hough transform and neural networks are used to extract the time intervals of the points. To detect the best points, three approaches are used. Point length suggests which points correspond to rallies and aces. The audio waves are analyzed to search for the highest audio peaks, which indicate the moments where the crowd cheers the most. Sentiment analysis, a natural language processing technique, is used to look for points where the commentators …
Counting The Moduli Space Of Pentagons On Finite Projective Planes, Maxwell Hosler
Counting The Moduli Space Of Pentagons On Finite Projective Planes, Maxwell Hosler
Senior Independent Study Theses
Finite projective planes are finite incidence structures which generalize the concept of the real projective plane. In this paper, we consider structures of points embedded in these planes. In particular, we investigate pentagons in general position, meaning no three vertices are colinear. We are interested in properties of these pentagons that are preserved by collineation of the plane, and so can be conceived as properties of the equivalence class of polygons up to collineation as a whole. Amongst these are the symmetries of a pentagon and the periodicity of the pentagon under the pentagram map, and a generalization of …
Wildfire Simulation Using Agent Based Modeling: Expanding Controlled Burn Season, Morgan C. Kromer
Wildfire Simulation Using Agent Based Modeling: Expanding Controlled Burn Season, Morgan C. Kromer
Senior Independent Study Theses
The United States is home to many different and unique forests. Prior to the 21st century, the United States Forests Service assumed that the best way to protect these forests was to put all efforts to keeping them alive. An enemy to these efforts were wildfires, thus the US adopted a complete fire suppression approach. At the turn of the century, the US realized that wildfires are a necessary part of a forest ecosystem, as they help return nutrients to the soil and reduce ground fuels. However, after suppressing all fires for over 100 years, the forests evolved into a …
The Effects Of Viscous Damping On Rogue Wave Formation And Permanent Downshift In The Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation, Evelyn Smith
The Effects Of Viscous Damping On Rogue Wave Formation And Permanent Downshift In The Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation, Evelyn Smith
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This thesis investigates the effect of viscous damping on rogue wave formation and permanent downshift using the higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation (HONLS). The strength of viscous damping is varied and compared to experiments with only linear damped HONLS.
Stability analysis of the linear damped HONLS equation shows that instability stabilizes over time. This analysis also provides an instability criterion in the case of HONLS with viscous damping.
Numerical experiments are conducted in the two unstable mode regime using perturbations of the Stokes wave as initial data. With only linear damping permanent downshift is not observed and rogue wave formation is …
Unique Lifting To A Functor, Mark Myers
Unique Lifting To A Functor, Mark Myers
West Chester University Master’s Theses
We develop a functorial approach to quotient constructions, defining morphisms quotient relative to a functor and the dual concept of unique liftings relative to a functor. Various classes of epimorphism are given detailed analysis and their relationship to quotient morphisms characterized. The behavior of unique lifting morphisms with respect to products, equalizers, and general limits in a category are studied. Applications to generalized covering space theory, coreflective subcategories of topological spaces, topological groups and rings, and Galois theory are explored. Finally, we give conditions for the product of two quotient morphisms to be quotient in a braided monoidal closed category.
Optimal Impulse Controls With Changing Running Cost And Applications In Mortgage Refinance, Yuchen Cao
Optimal Impulse Controls With Changing Running Cost And Applications In Mortgage Refinance, Yuchen Cao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Almost all home buyers have mortgages and it is quite common to have mortgage refinanced. There are two main reasons that make people decide to refinance the mortgage: (i) need some cash for urgent purposes, and (ii) lower the monthly payment. In this dissertation, we are not going to discuss (i), and we are investigating problems related to (ii). To begin with, let us intuitively make the following observations: If the interest rate remains the same as the current mortgage interest rate, then the monthly payment will automatically lower if you start a new mortgage with the same term, say, …

Extensions Of The General Solution To The Inverse Problem Of The Calculus Of Variations, And Variational, Perturbative And Reversible Systems Approaches To Regular And Embedded Solitary Waves, Ranses Alfonso Rodriguez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
In the first part of this Dissertation, hierarchies of Lagrangians of degree two, three or four, each only partly determined by the choice of leading terms and with some coefficients remaining free, are derived. These have significantly greater freedom than the most general differential geometric criterion currently known for the existence of a Lagrangian and variational formulation since our existence conditions are for individual coefficients in the Lagrangian. For different choices of leading coefficients, the resulting variational equations could also represent traveling waves of various nonlinear evolution equations. Families of regular and embedded solitary waves are derived for some of …
