Security Analysis Of Lightweight Cryptographic Primitives, William Unger May 2022

Security Analysis Of Lightweight Cryptographic Primitives, William Unger

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Symmetric key cryptographic primitives are essential to encrypt data and protect communication between parties. Due to resource constraints, some modern devices are not capable of executing traditional cryptographic algorithms. This fact necessitates new lightweight cryptographic algorithms. Current research into lightweight cryptology is vast, in part due to the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) lightweight cryptographic standardization process.

There is not much research into the vulnerability to a power analysis attack created by the choice of parameters of lightweight symmetric ciphers. This dissertation develops and demonstrates white box and black box cryptanalysis models for power analysis attacks on lightweight …

Minimal Inscribed Polyforms, Jack Hanke May 2022

Minimal Inscribed Polyforms, Jack Hanke

Honors Scholar Theses

A polyomino of size n is constructed by joining n unit squares together by their edge to form a shape in the plane. This thesis will first examine the formal definition of a polyomino and the common equivalence classes polyominos are enumerated under. We then turn to polyomino families, and provide exact enumeration results for certain families, including the minimal inscribed polyominos. Next we will generalize polyominos to polyforms, and provide novel formulae for polyform analogues of minimal inscribed polyominos. Finally, we discuss some further questions concerning minimal inscribed polyforms.

A Decomposition Formula For The Multi-Soliton Solutions To The 'Good' Boussinesq Equation, Aldo Gonzalez May 2022

A Decomposition Formula For The Multi-Soliton Solutions To The 'Good' Boussinesq Equation, Aldo Gonzalez

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we relate multi-soliton waves generated by the 'good' Boussinesq equation to the distribution functions in the classical linear Schrödinger equation. The linear Schrödinger equation describes the distribution of a particle or particles in a particular environment. The Schrödinger equation is linear, the superposition principle of the solutions, especially the eigenfunctions is nonlinear and we will show that we may observe similar behavior in the solutions of the Boussinesq equations for soliton waves. The work extends the study of two-soliton solutions to the Boussinesq equation to the case of three-soliton solutions. …

Iterated Rascal Triangles, Jena M. Gregory May 2022

Iterated Rascal Triangles, Jena M. Gregory

Theses and Dissertations

We introduce a sequence of number triangles, {Ri} i=0 infty , such that the entries of each share a common generalized recurrence relation. R1 is the Rascal triangle and as i grows large, Ri becomes Pascal's triangle. For all i, we provide a combinatorial interpretation and find closed-term formulas for the entries of Ri . Our proofs rely on generating functions and other combinatorial arguments.

Pentagonal Tilings Of The Plane, Ariana T. Hinojosa May 2022

Pentagonal Tilings Of The Plane, Ariana T. Hinojosa

Theses and Dissertations

Tilings are mathematical objects that allow us to use geometry to visualize interaction between objects as well as to create artistic realization of mathematical objects in the plane and in the space.

We will focus on tilings of the plane that use only one type of convex pentagonal tile each, the pentagonal tilings. There are fifteen types of pentagonal tiles, with each containing their own set of restrictions. The main result of this thesis is an interactive realization of all fifteen types of pentagonal tiles using GeoGebra.

A Gpu Accelerated Genetic Algorithm For The Construction Of Hadamard Matrices, Raven I. Ruiz May 2022

A Gpu Accelerated Genetic Algorithm For The Construction Of Hadamard Matrices, Raven I. Ruiz

Theses and Dissertations

Hadamard matrices are square matrices with +1 and -1 entries and with columns that are mutually orthogonal. The applications include signal processing and quantum computing. There are several methods for constructing Hadamard matrices of order 2k for every positive integer k. The Hadamard conjecture proposes that there are also Hadamard matrices of order 4k for every positive integer k. We use a genetic algorithm to construct (search for) Hadamard Matrices. The initial population of random matrices is generated to have a balanced number of +1 and -1 entries in each column. Several fitness functions are implemented exploiting …

Boundary Feedback Control Of The 3d Navier-Stokes Equations, Camille Renee Vasquez May 2022

Boundary Feedback Control Of The 3d Navier-Stokes Equations, Camille Renee Vasquez

Theses and Dissertations

We present a boundary feedback stabilization of the parabolic steady state profile of the incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations in a three-dimensional channel flow. The decentralized, static boundary feedback control laws are derived using Lyapunov technique. While the theoretical results are limited to stability enhancement for small Reynolds numbers, extensive numerical simulations and visualizations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed feedback law even in cases when the uncontrolled flow is turbulent.

The Examination Of The Arithmetic Surface (3, 5) Over Q, Rachel J. Arguelles May 2022

The Examination Of The Arithmetic Surface (3, 5) Over Q, Rachel J. Arguelles

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This thesis is centered around the construction and analysis of the principal arithmetic surface (3, 5) over Q. By adjoining the two symbols i,j, where i2 = 3, j2 = 5, such that ij = -ji, I can produce a quaternion algebra over Q. I use this quaternion algebra to find a discrete subgroup of SL2(R), which I identify with isometries of the hyperbolic plane. From this quaternion algebra, I produce a large list of matrices and apply them via Mobius transformations to the point (0, 2), which is the center of my Dirichlet domain. This …

Symmetric Presentations Of Finite Groups And Related Topics, Samar Mikhail Kasouha May 2022

Symmetric Presentations Of Finite Groups And Related Topics, Samar Mikhail Kasouha

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

A progenitor is an infinite semi-direct product of the form m∗n : N, where N ≤ Sn and m∗n : N is a free product of n copies of a cyclic group of order m. A progenitor of this type, in particular 2∗n : N, gives finite non-abelian simple groups and groups involving these, including alternating groups, classical groups, and the sporadic group. We have conducted a systematic search of finite homomorphic images of numerous progenitors. In this thesis we have presented original symmetric presentations of the sporadic simple groups, M12, J1 as homomorphic images of the progenitor 2∗12 : …

Simple Groups And Related Topics, Simrandeep Kaur May 2022

Simple Groups And Related Topics, Simrandeep Kaur

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Since every nonabelian simple group is a homomorphic image of an involutory progenitor 2^(*n):N where N ≤ S_n is transitive, our motivation for the thesis has been to seek finite homomorphic images of such progenitors and construct them using our technique of double coset enumeration. We have constructed U_3 (3):2 over 5^2:S_3, 2x(A_5 x A_5) over D_5 x D_5, S_6 over S_5, 2^5:S_5 over S_5, and 3^3: 2^3 over 3^2:2 . We have discovered original symmetric presentations numerous group as homomorphic images various progenitors. We have also found new monomial representations of groups and given monomial progenitors. We have given …

De Rham Cohomology, Homotopy Invariance And The Mayer-Vietoris Sequence, Stacey Elizabeth Cox

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This thesis will discuss the de Rham cohomology, homotopy invariance and the Mayer-Vietoris sequence. First the necessary information for this thesis is discussed such as differential p-forms, the exterior derivative as well as pull back of a map. The de Rham cohomology is defined explicitly, some properties of the de Rham cohomology will also be discussed. It will be shown that the de Rham cohomology is in fact a homotopy invariant as well as some examples using homotopy invariance are provided. Finally the Mayer-Vietoris sequence will be established, an example of using the Mayer-Vietoris sequence to compute the de …

Improved First-Order Techniques For Certain Classes Of Convex Optimization, Trevor Squires May 2022

Improved First-Order Techniques For Certain Classes Of Convex Optimization, Trevor Squires

All Dissertations

The primary concern of this thesis is to explore efficient first-order methods of computing approximate solutions to convex optimization problems. In recent years, these methods have become increasingly desirable as many problems in fields such as machine learning and imaging science have scaled tremendously. Our aim here is to acknowledge the capabilities of such methods and then propose new techniques that extend the reach or accelerate the performance of the existing state-of-the-art literature.

Our novel contributions are as follows. We first show that the popular Conditional Gradient Sliding (CGS) algorithm can be extended in application to objectives with H\"older continuous …

Numerical Study Of Cahn-Hilliard Equations, Oula Khouzam May 2022

Numerical Study Of Cahn-Hilliard Equations, Oula Khouzam

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis we study the well-known first-order Eyre's convex splitting numerical scheme for solving the Cahn-Hilliard equation and theoretically prove and numerically demonstrate the key properties of the scheme namely: mass conservation, unique solvability and unconditional stability. While the convex splitting scheme has been around for over two decades, explicit proofs for these important properties for the fourth order Cahn-Hillard equation are not directly available in the existing literature. This thesis aims to bridge this gap by providing the complete proofs of the aforementioned key properties of the scheme and numerically demonstrating the performance of the scheme.

Mathematical Modeling Of Potassium Modulated Viral Infection, Zaira Elizabeth Mather May 2022

Mathematical Modeling Of Potassium Modulated Viral Infection, Zaira Elizabeth Mather

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In recent years, there is a growing interest in the investigation of using potassium to treat virus infections. In the region of infection, there is a biological observation of extracel- lular potassium level being typically very low whereas the intracellular potassium levels are much higher. There are numerous biological studies showing that elevated potassium levels in the extracellular membrane tends to block virus infections. A recent effort in this direction is a collaborative research conducted by mathematicians and biologists from the University of Texas at El Paso, New Mexico State University, and the University of New Mexico, where we develop …

The Butterfly Effect Of Fractals, Cody Watkins May 2022

The Butterfly Effect Of Fractals, Cody Watkins

Honors College Theses

This thesis applies concepts in fractal geometry to the relatively new field of mathematics known as chaos theory, with emphasis on the underlying foundation of the field: the butterfly effect. We begin by reviewing concepts useful for an introduction to chaos theory by defining terms such as fractals, transformations, affine transformations, and contraction mappings, as well as proving and demonstrating the contraction mapping theorem. We also show that each fractal produced by the contraction mapping theorem is unique in its fractal dimension, another term we define. We then show and demonstrate iterated function systems and take a closer look at …

Dynamical Systems Analysis In Adaptive And Metapopulation Ecology With Applications To Conservation Management, Guenchik Grosklos May 2022

Dynamical Systems Analysis In Adaptive And Metapopulation Ecology With Applications To Conservation Management, Guenchik Grosklos

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The ability for a species to persist largely relies on how well they adapt to the environment and their interactions with local and global communities. Specifically, if adaptation occurs quickly enough or nearby communities sufficiently promote growth rates, populations at risk of extinction may persist. In this dissertation, we first develop a method that estimates and compares rates of change in time series data of population densities and measurable traits (phenotypes). Additionally, we compare between genetic (evolutionary) and non-genetic (plastic) trait change to determine whether phenotypes change faster when driven by evolutionary or plastic change. We then focus on metapopulation …

The Influence Of A Course On Assessment For Inservice Secondary Mathematics Teachers, Natalie M. Anderson May 2022

The Influence Of A Course On Assessment For Inservice Secondary Mathematics Teachers, Natalie M. Anderson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many mathematics teachers are not prepared to design valid and usable measurements of their students’ mathematical achievements. There are relatively few opportunities for mathematics teachers to improve their assessment literacy. The purpose of this study is to (1) design a course on assessment for inservice mathematics teachers and (2) evaluate the effectiveness of the course. This paper recounts the development of the course and its influence on 16 teachers. Teachers who completed the course submitted a unit outline with learning objectives, a test blueprint, and a unit test. These artifacts influenced my evaluation on the effectiveness of the course. All …

A Survey Of The Br´Ezis-Nirenberg Problem And Related Theorems, Edward Huynh May 2022

A Survey Of The Br´Ezis-Nirenberg Problem And Related Theorems, Edward Huynh

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations on bounded domains arise in several different areas of mathematics that include geometry, mathematical physics, and the calculus of variations. The Br ́ezis-Nirenberg problem is concerned with a boundary-value problem that is intimately connected to the existence of positive solutions of the Yamabe problem, of non-minimal solutions to Yang-Mills functionals, and of extremal functions to several important inequalities. Results on existence and uniqueness have been obtained in cases when the exponent is sub-critical, but such results have not been obtained when the exponent is critical due to a lack of compactness. The earliest results obtained …

Some Graph Laplacians And Variational Methods Applied To Partial Differential Equations On Graphs, Daniel Anthony Corral May 2022

Some Graph Laplacians And Variational Methods Applied To Partial Differential Equations On Graphs, Daniel Anthony Corral

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In this dissertation we will be examining partial differential equations on graphs. We start by presenting some basic graph theory topics and graph Laplacians with some minor original results. We move on to computing original Jost graph Laplacians of friendly labelings of various finite graphs. We then continue on to a host of original variational problems on a finite graph. The first variational problem is an original basic minimization problem. Next, we use the Lagrange multiplier approach to the Kazdan-Warner equation on a finite graph, our original results generalize those of Dr. Grigor’yan, Dr. Yang, and Dr. Lin. Then we …

Analyzing Suicidal Text Using Natural Language Processing, Cassandra Barton May 2022

Analyzing Suicidal Text Using Natural Language Processing, Cassandra Barton

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Using Natural Language Processing (NLP), we are able to analyze text from suicidal individuals. This can be done using a variety of methods. I analyzed a dataset of a girl named Victoria that died by suicide. I used a machine learning method to train a different dataset and tested it on her diary entries to classify her text into two categories: suicidal vs non-suicidal. I used topic modeling to find out unique topics in each subset. I also found a pattern in her diary entries. NLP allows us to help individuals that are suicidal and their family members and close …

Multiscale Optimization Via Multilevel Pca-Based Control Space Reduction In Applications To Electrical Impedance Tomography, Maria Minhee Felicia Monica Chun

Theses and Dissertations

A fully developed computational framework for the optimal reconstruction of binary-type images suitable for various models seen in biological and medical applications is developed and validated. This framework enables solutions to the inverse electrical impedance tomography (EIT) problems of cancer detection at different levels of complexity with multiple cancer-affected regions of different sizes based on available measurements usually affected by noise. A new spatial partitioning methodology and efficient scheme for switching between fine and coarse scales are developed to allow higher variations in the geometry of reconstructed binary images with superior performance confirmed computationally on various models. A nominal number …

Extremal Problems In Graph Saturation And Covering, Adam Volk May 2022

Extremal Problems In Graph Saturation And Covering, Adam Volk

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation considers several problems in extremal graph theory with the aim of finding the maximum or minimum number of certain subgraph counts given local conditions. The local conditions of interest to us are saturation and covering. Given graphs F and H, a graph G is said to be F-saturated if it does not contain any copy of F, but the addition of any missing edge in G creates at least one copy of F. We say that G is H-covered if every vertex of G is contained in at least one copy of H. In the former setting, we …

The Impact Of Sea-Level Rise In Numerically Modeled Landfalling Hurricanes: Katrina And The Gulf Coast., Serenity Nadirah Mercuri May 2022

The Impact Of Sea-Level Rise In Numerically Modeled Landfalling Hurricanes: Katrina And The Gulf Coast., Serenity Nadirah Mercuri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With climate change, landfalling hurricanes become an increasing threat to coastal regions. However, the interactions between the coastal landscape and landfalling hurricanes are often overlooked when addressing sea-level rise outside of inundation and independent of sea surface temperature. This study analyzed the potential impacts regarding structure and intensity as a result of sea-level rise in the Gulf of Mexico using the WRF-ARW numerical model coupled with a 1D ocean model. Analysis showed that 10 m windspeed from landfall forward was higher in modified coastlines, and minimum sea-level pressure post-landfall was consistently lower for modified runs where storms maintain a higher …

Diederich-Fornæss Index On Boundaries Containing Crescents, Jason Demoulpied May 2022

Diederich-Fornæss Index On Boundaries Containing Crescents, Jason Demoulpied

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The worm domain developed by Diederich and Fornæss is a classic example of a boundedpseudoconvex domains that fails to satisfy global regularity of the Bergman Projection, due to the set of weakly pseudoconvex points that form an annulus in its boundary. We instead examine a bounded pseudoconvex domain Ω ⊂ C2 whose set of weakly pseudoconvex points form a crescent in its boundary. In 2019, Harrington had shown that these types of domains satisfy global regularity of the Bergman Projection based on the existence of good vector fields. In this thesis we study the Regularized Diederich-Fornæss index of these domains, …

Machine Learning Classification Of Digitally Modulated Signals, James A. Latshaw May 2022

Machine Learning Classification Of Digitally Modulated Signals, James A. Latshaw

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Automatic classification of digitally modulated signals is a challenging problem that has traditionally been approached using signal processing tools such as log-likelihood algorithms for signal classification or cyclostationary signal analysis. These approaches are computationally intensive and cumbersome in general, and in recent years alternative approaches that use machine learning have been presented in the literature for automatic classification of digitally modulated signals. This thesis studies deep learning approaches for classifying digitally modulated signals that use deep artificial neural networks in conjunction with the canonical representation of digitally modulated signals in terms of in-phase and quadrature components. Specifically, capsule networks are …

Chen-Fliess Series For Linear Distributed Systems, Natalie T. Pham May 2022

Chen-Fliess Series For Linear Distributed Systems, Natalie T. Pham

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Distributed systems like fluid flow and heat transfer are modeled by partial differential equations (PDEs). In control theory, distributed systems are generally reformulated in terms of a linear state space realization, where the state space is an infinite dimensional Banach space or Hilbert space. In the finite dimension case, the input-output map can always be written in terms of a Chen-Fliess functional series, that is, a weighted sum of iterated integrals of the components of the input function. The Chen-Fliess functional series has been used to describe interconnected nonlinear systems, to solve system inversion and tracking problems, and to design …

A Spatiotemporal Bayesian Model For Population Analysis, Mohamed Jaber May 2022

A Spatiotemporal Bayesian Model For Population Analysis, Mohamed Jaber

Theses and Dissertations

Spatiotemporal population analysis based on incomplete, redundant, and unidentified observations is critically important, yet it is a very challenging problem. Different approaches have been proposed and several methods have been implemented to address this problem. Capture-recapture methods have been widely used and have become the standard sampling and analytical framework for ecological statistics with applications to population analysis. Despite the fact that capture-recapture methods have been commonly used, these methods do not consider the spatial structure of the population. Moreover, conventional capturerecapture methods do not use any explicit spatial information with regard to the spatial nature of the sampling and …
