On The P(X)-Laplace Equation In Carnot Groups, Robert D. Freeman Mar 2020

On The P(X)-Laplace Equation In Carnot Groups, Robert D. Freeman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we examine the p(x)-Laplace equation in the context of Carnot groups. The p(x)-Laplace equation is the prototype equation for a class of nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations having so-called nonstandard growth conditions. An important and useful tool in studying these types of equations is viscosity theory. We prove a p()-Poincar´e-type inequality and use it to prove the equivalence of potential theoretic weak solutions and viscosity solutions to the p(x)-Laplace equation. We exploit this equivalence to prove a Rad´o-type removability result for solutions to the p-Laplace equation in the Heisenberg group. Then we extend this result to the …

Development And Assessment Of A Continuing Education Unit In Quantitative Literacy For High School Stem Teachers, Craig P. Mcclure Mar 2020

Development And Assessment Of A Continuing Education Unit In Quantitative Literacy For High School Stem Teachers, Craig P. Mcclure

Numeracy

Influencing the teaching of quantitative literacy at all levels of education can be difficult due to the many demands placed on educators. In a continuing education course, public high school science teachers participated in a pilot study of a program on quantitative literacy, involving defining quantitative literacy, how it is beneficial to students, examples of quantitative literacy education, and how it may be supported in the science classroom. Surveys administered before and after the unit indicate an improvement in the teachers’ understanding of quantitative literacy, and a follow-up survey indicates that the unit impacted classroom practice. Results support the conclusion …

Triangles In Ks-Saturated Graphs With Minimum Degree T, Craig Timmons, Benjamin Cole, Albert Curry, David Davini Mar 2020

Triangles In Ks-Saturated Graphs With Minimum Degree T, Craig Timmons, Benjamin Cole, Albert Curry, David Davini

Theory & Applications of Graphs

For n ≥ 15, we prove that the minimum number of triangles in an n-vertex K4-saturated graph with minimum degree 4 is exactly 2n-4, and that there is a unique extremal graph. This is a triangle version of a result of Alon, Erdos, Holzman, and Krivelevich from 1996. Additionally, we show that for any s > r ≥ 3 and t ≥ 2 (s-2)+1, there is a Ks-saturated n-vertex graph with minimum degree t that has \binom{ s-2}{r-1}2^{r-1} n + c_{s,r,t} copies of Kr. This shows that …

Groups Of Divisibility, Seth J. Gerberding Mar 2020

Groups Of Divisibility, Seth J. Gerberding

Honors Thesis

In this thesis, we examine a part of abstract algebra known as Groups of Divisibility. We construct these special groups from basic concepts. We begin with partially-ordered sets, then build our way into groups, rings, and even structures akin to rings of polynomials. In particular, we explore how elementary algebra evolves when an ordering is included with the operations. Our results follow the work done by Anderson and Feil, however we include more explicit proofs and constructions. Our primary results include proving that a group of divisibility can be provided with an order to make it a partially-ordered group; that …

Boundary Theorem Of Morera In The Space Of Rectangular Matrices, B. T. Kurbanov Mar 2020

Boundary Theorem Of Morera In The Space Of Rectangular Matrices, B. T. Kurbanov

Karakalpak Scientific Journal

In the theory of functions of one complex variable, Morer's theorem is known, which is inverse in some sense to the classical Cauchy theorem. On the complex plane, results on functions with the one-dimensional property of holomorphic continuation are trivial, and Morer's boundary theorems are absent. We note that the ordinary (non-boundary) Morera theorems in domains of space are well known. The first result related to our topic was obtained by Agranovsky M.L. and Valsky R.E. [1], who studied functions with the one-dimensional property of holomorphic continuation in a ball. The proof was based on the properties of the automorphism …

Boundary Value Problem For The Fourth-Order Degenerate Equation Of Mixed Type, Zh. A. Otarova Mar 2020

Boundary Value Problem For The Fourth-Order Degenerate Equation Of Mixed Type, Zh. A. Otarova

Karakalpak Scientific Journal

In this paper, we study a boundary value problem for degenerate fourth-order mixed type partial differential equation in a rectangular domain. The unique regular solvability of the boundary value problem posed is investigated. The solution is constructed in the form of the sum of the biorthogonal series in an explicit form, and the rationale for the convergence of the series in the class of regular solutions is given. To prove the solution of this problem, the estimates of the coefficients of the series and the system of eigenfunctions are used, which are established by asymptotic formulas for the Bessel function …

Smoothness Of Riesz Potential Out Of The Set Of Small Lebesgue Measure, A. Daujanov Mar 2020

Smoothness Of Riesz Potential Out Of The Set Of Small Lebesgue Measure, A. Daujanov

Karakalpak Scientific Journal

We deals with the differential properties of the potential to some Borel measure of order, where Riesz kernel. The smoothness of Riesz potential out of some set of small Lebesgue measure is proved. The method of proof is based on the representation theorem of subharmonic function with the help of potential associated with a Borel measure. The result complements the well-known theorem of Cartan.

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to characterize the growth of one student’s mathematical understanding and use of different representations about a geometric transformation, dilation. We accomplished this purpose by using the Pirie-Kieren model jointly with the Semiotic Representation Theory as a lens. Elif, a 10th- grade student, was purposefully chosen as the case for this study because of the growth of mathematical understanding about dilation she exhibited over time. Elif participated in task-based interviews before, during and after participating in a variety of transformation lessons where she used multiple representations, including physical and virtual manipulatives. The results …

Describing Quasi-Graphic Matroids, Nathan Bowler, Daryl Funk, Dan Slilaty Mar 2020

Describing Quasi-Graphic Matroids, Nathan Bowler, Daryl Funk, Dan Slilaty

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

The class of quasi-graphic matroids recently introduced by Geelen, Gerards, and Whittle generalises each of the classes of frame matroids and liftedgraphic matroids introduced earlier by Zaslavsky. For each biased graph (G, B) Zaslavsky defined a unique lift matroid L(G, B) and a unique frame matroid F(G, B), each on ground set E(G). We show that in general there may be many quasi-graphic matroids on E(G) and describe them all: for each graph G and partition (B, L, F) of its cycles such that B satisfies the theta property and each cycle in L meets each cycle in F, there …

On A Class Of Elliptic Free Boundary Problems With Multiple Solutions, Kanishka Perera Mar 2020

On A Class Of Elliptic Free Boundary Problems With Multiple Solutions, Kanishka Perera

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

We prove that a certain class of elliptic free boundary problems, which includes the Prandtl-Batchelor problem from fluid dynamics as a special case, has two distinct nontrivial solutions for large values of a parameter. The first solution is a global minimizer of the energy. The energy functional is nondifferentiable, so standard variational arguments cannot be used directly to obtain a second nontrivial solution. We obtain our second solution as the limit of mountain pass points of a sequence of C1-functionals approximating the energy. We use careful estimates of the corresponding energy levels to show that this limit is neither trivial …

On Quasilinear Parabolic Equations And Continuous Maximal Regularity, Jeremy Lecrone, Gieri Simonett Mar 2020

On Quasilinear Parabolic Equations And Continuous Maximal Regularity, Jeremy Lecrone, Gieri Simonett

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We consider a class of abstract quasilinear parabolic problems with lower–order terms exhibiting a prescribed singular structure. We prove well–posedness and Lipschitz continuity of associated semiflows. Moreover, we investigate global existence of solutions and we extend the generalized principle of linearized stability to settings with initial values in critical spaces. These general results are applied to the surface diffusion flow in various settings.

The Impact Of Departmentalized And Traditional Instructional Settings On Economically Disadvantaged Fourth Grade Students' Mathematical Proficiency, Elizabeth Courtney Medlock Mar 2020

The Impact Of Departmentalized And Traditional Instructional Settings On Economically Disadvantaged Fourth Grade Students' Mathematical Proficiency, Elizabeth Courtney Medlock

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

All students must have opportunities to achieve high levels of mathematics learning, thus, organizational settings in the field of education should be carefully examined to determine the extent to which the instructional environment affects student achievement, growth, and application of grade level standards for students identified as economically disadvantaged. The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study was to investigate differences in mathematical proficiency of economically disadvantaged fourth-grade students in departmentalized versus traditional instructional settings as measured by the 2019 Maryland PARCC mathematics assessment. A cluster sample of low-income fourth-grade students from 80 public elementary schools in a large, suburban school …

Congruences For Coefficients Of Modular Functions In Levels 3, 5, And 7 With Poles At 0, Ryan Austin Keck Mar 2020

Congruences For Coefficients Of Modular Functions In Levels 3, 5, And 7 With Poles At 0, Ryan Austin Keck

Theses and Dissertations

We give congruences modulo powers of p in {3, 5, 7} for the Fourier coefficients of certain modular functions in level p with poles only at 0, answering a question posed by Andersen and Jenkins and continuing work done by the Jenkins, the author, and Moss. The congruences involve a modulus that depends on the base p expansion of the modular form's order of vanishing at infinity.

Towards Enhanced Chlorine Control: Mathematical Modeling For Free Chlorine Kinetics During Fresh-Cut Carrot, Cabbage And Lettuce Washing, Parthasarathy Srinivasan, Mohammadreza Dehghan Abnavi, Anthony Sulak, Chandrasekhar R. Kothapalli, Daniel Munther

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

In this study, we developed a novel produce-specific mechanistic model to predict free chlorine (FC) dynamics during washing of disk-cut carrots, cut cabbage, and cut iceberg lettuce, in 3 L and 50–100 L tanks, and of shredded iceberg lettuce in 3200 L pilot-plant trials. Ranges for two key parameters: β (L mg−1 min−1) the apparent reaction rate constant of FC with produce constituents, and γ, the fraction of the increase of chemical oxygen demand (COD) contributing to the reaction, were determined at the 3 L scale. For disk carrots β∈[0.05,0.09] and γ∈[0.054,0.078], for cut cabbage β∈[0.05,0.10] and γ∈[0.09,0.12], and for …

Underwater Gesture Recognition Using Classical Computer Vision And Deep Learning Techniques, Mygel Andrei M. Martija, Jakov Ivan S. Dumbrique, Prospero C. Naval Jr.

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Underwater Gesture Recognition is a challenging task since conditions which are normally not an issue in gesture recognition on land must be considered. Such issues include low visibility, low contrast, and unequal spectral propagation. In this work, we explore the underwater gesture recognition problem by taking on the recently released Cognitive Autonomous Diving Buddy Underwater Gestures dataset. The contributions of this paper are as follows: (1) Use traditional computer vision techniques along with classical machine learning to perform gesture recognition on the CADDY dataset; (2) Apply deep learning using a convolutional neural network to solve the same problem; (3) Perform …

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In this thesis, we have investigated several permutation and monomialprogenitors for finite images. We have found original symmetric presen-tations for several important non-abelian simple groups, including lineargroups, unitary groups, alternating groups, and sporadic simple groups. We have found a number of finite images, including : L(2,41), PSL(2,11)×2, L(2,8), and L(2,19), as homomorphic images of the permutation progenitors. We have also found PGL(2,16) : 2 =Aut(PSL(2,16)) and PSL(2,16) as homomorphic images of monomial progenitors. We have performed manual double coset enumeration of finte images. In addition, we have given the isomorphism class of each image that we have discovered. Presentation for all …

Gram Determinant Solutions To Nonlocal Integrable Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations Via The Pair Reduction, Junchao Chen, Bao-Feng Feng, Yongyang Jin Mar 2020

Gram Determinant Solutions To Nonlocal Integrable Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations Via The Pair Reduction, Junchao Chen, Bao-Feng Feng, Yongyang Jin

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, Gram determinant solutions of local and nonlocal integrable discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (IDNLS) equations are studied via the pair reduction. A generalized IDNLS equation is firstly introduced which possesses the single Casorati determinant solution. Two kinds of Gram determinant solutions are presented from Casorati determinant ones due to the gauge freedom. The different pair constraint conditions for wave numbers are imposed and then solutions of local and nonlocal IDNLS equations are derived in terms of Gram determinant.

People afflicted with diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration experience a decline in vision due to photoreceptor degeneration, which is currently unstoppable and irreversible. Currently there is no cure for diseases linked to photoreceptor degeneration. Recent experimental work showed that mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF) can reduce neuron death and, in particular, photoreceptor death by reducing the number of cells that undergo apoptosis. In this work, we build on an existing system of ordinary differential equations that represent photoreceptor interactions and incorporate MANF treatment for three experimental mouse models having undergone varying degrees of photoreceptor degeneration. Using …

Optimal Quantization Via Dynamics, Joseph Rosenblatt, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury Mar 2020

Optimal Quantization Via Dynamics, Joseph Rosenblatt, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Quantization for probability distributions refers broadly to estimating a given probability measure by a discrete probability measure supported by a finite number of points. We consider general geometric approaches to quantization using stationary processes arising in dynamical systems, followed by a discussion of the special cases of stationary processes: random processes and Diophantine processes. We are interested in how close stationary process can be to giving optimal n-means and nth optimal mean distortion errors. We also consider different ways of measuring the degree of approximation by quantization, and their advantages and disadvantages in these different contexts.

Essays On Regulation Of Platformmarkets., Gaurav Jakhu Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The digital transformation and rise of online platforms have improved consumer welfare and business opportunities through better consumer choice and increased efficiency in trade. In this light, the authorities must weigh the concerns regarding the concentration of market power in the hands of a few large firms against the substantial benefits that they offer. In particular, user data is seen as a competitive resource in digital markets. In addition to better matches and information learning, activities of online firms in data collection and exploitation have raised concerns about erosion in user privacy and abuse of market power in digital markets. …

Characterization Of Eigenfunctions Of The Laplace-Beltrami Operator Through Radial Averages On Rank One Symmetric Spaces., Muna Naik Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Let X be a rank one Riemannian symmetric space of noncompact type and ∆ be the Laplace–Beltrami operator of X. The space X can be identified with the quotient space G/K where G is a connected noncompact semisimple Lie group of real rank one with finite centre and K is a maximal compact subgroup of G. Thus G acts naturally on X by left translations. Through this identification, a function or measure on X is radial (i.e. depends only on the distance from eK), when it is invariant under the left-action of K. We consider right-convolution operators Θ on functions …
