Intermediate Cell States In Epithelial-To-Mesenchymal Transition, Yutong Sha, Daniel Haensel, Guadalupe Gutierrez, Huijing Du, Xing Dai, Qing Nie Jan 2019

Intermediate Cell States In Epithelial-To-Mesenchymal Transition, Yutong Sha, Daniel Haensel, Guadalupe Gutierrez, Huijing Du, Xing Dai, Qing Nie

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The transition of epithelial cells into a mesenchymal state (epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition or EMT) is a highly dynamic process implicated in various biological processes. During EMT, cells do not necessarily exist in ‘pure’ epithelial or mesenchymal states. There are cells with mixed (or hybrid) features of the two, which are termed as the intermediate cell states (ICSs). While the exact functions of ICS remain elusive, together with EMT it appears to play important roles in embryogenesis, tissue development, and pathological processes such as cancer metastasis. Recent single cell experiments and advanced mathematical modeling have improved our capability in identifying ICS and …

Free Market On The Free Way, Yuan Cheng Jan 2019

Free Market On The Free Way, Yuan Cheng

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Self-driving cars have the potential to decrease congestion and will probably become the future of efficient transportation. This dissertation presents a unique approach to implement sharing lanes on a freeway using the idea of option pricing. A macroscopic physical model (LWR) is implemented by adding noise to the speed which accounts for unexpected events. We then proceed to provide a fair price for lanes in real time.

Statistical Analysis Of Tandem Queues With Markovian Passages In Porous Mediums, Gboyega David Adepoju Jan 2019

Statistical Analysis Of Tandem Queues With Markovian Passages In Porous Mediums, Gboyega David Adepoju

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Queuing theory is the mathematical study of queues or waiting lines. A queue is formed whenever the demand for service exceeds the capacity to provide service at that point in time. In this thesis, the birth-and-death process is used to model the movement of customers or units into and out of a network of queues in tandem. We start with the theoretical analysis of M/M/1 queues with Poisson arrival and exponential service time with first-come first-served (FCFS) discipline and one service station. We derive the global balance equation for each network. Using both the iterative and the probability generating function, …

Local Lagged Adapted Generalized Method Of Moments: An Innovative Estimation And Forecasting Approach And Its Applications., Olusegun Michael Otunuga, Gandaram S. Ladde, Nathan G. Ladde

Mathematics Faculty Research

In this work, an attempt is made to apply the Local Lagged Adapted Generalized Method of Moments (LLGMM) to estimate state and parameters in stochastic differential dynamic models. The development of LLGMM is motivated by parameter and state estimation problems in continuous-time nonlinear and non-stationary stochastic dynamic model validation problems in biological, chemical, engineering, energy commodity markets, financial, medical, military, physical sciences and social sciences. The byproducts of this innovative approach (LLGMM) are the balance between model specification and model prescription of continuous-time dynamic process and the development of discrete-time interconnected dynamic model of local sample mean and variance statistic …

On The Existence Of Partitioned Incomplete Latin Squares With Five Parts, Jaromy Kuhl, Donald Mcginn, Michael W. Schroeder

Mathematics Faculty Research

Let a, b, c, d, e be positive integers such that a ≤ b ≤ c ≤ d ≤ e. Heinrich showed the existence of a partitioned incomplete Latin square (PILS) of type (a, b, c) and (a, b, c, d) if and only if a = b = c and 2a ≥ d. For PILS of type (a,b,c,d,e), it is necessary that a + b + c ≥ e, but not sufficient, and no characterization is currently known. In this talk we provide an additional …

Second-Order Generalized Differentiation Of Piecewise Linear-Quadratic Functions And Its Applications, Hong Do

Wayne State University Dissertations

The area of second-order variational analysis has been rapidly developing during the recent years with many important applications in optimization. This dissertation is devoted to the study and applications of the second-order generalized differentiation of a remarkable

class of convex extended-real-valued functions that is highly important in many aspects of nonlinear and variational analysis, specifically those related to optimization and stability.

The first goal of this dissertation is to compute the second-order subdifferential of the functions described above, which will be applied in the study of the stability of composite optimization problems associated with piecewise linear-quadratic functions, known as extended …

Linear Difference Equations: Integrated- Environmentalist Approach For Teaching Mathematics, John A. Adam Jan 2019

Linear Difference Equations: Integrated- Environmentalist Approach For Teaching Mathematics, John A. Adam

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

There are at least eight known approaches for teaching mathematics that have been described in the literature. These include the Integrated Environmentalist, Formative, Social-Constructivist, Structuralist, New Maths, Problem Solving, Cultural, and Behaviorist approaches (Neyland, 1995). This paper presents some examples for teaching mathematics using the Integrated-Environmentalist approach, which is based on the assumption that the content knowledge in mathematics cannot be separated from the meaningful context from which it is taken, and in which it can be explained. In this approach for teaching mathematics the environment is used as the main source of mathematical meaning, stimulation to do creative work …

An Examination Of Computational Methods Related To G/M/C Queueing, Thomas Michaud Ms

All Student Scholarship

The following examination of computational methods related to queues with general arrivals (i:i:d: but of unknown distribution), multiple identical servers with i:i:d: exponential service times, and ordinary first come, first served service (hereafter referred to as G/M/c to use existing naming conventions) seeks to investigate the current models and provide new results based on a draft convolution method proposed by El-Taha[3]. The new model will demonstrate the use of distributions with coefficients of variance ranging from zero to near infinity to provide flexibility in simulating a range of potential arrival distributions, and we include detailed results and software for both …

Mathematical Modeling Of Type 1 Diabetes, Gianna Wu Jan 2019

Mathematical Modeling Of Type 1 Diabetes, Gianna Wu

HMC Senior Theses

Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease where the pancreas produces little to no insulin, which is a hormone that regulates blood glucose levels. This happens because the immune system attacks (and kills) the beta cells of the pancreas, which are responsible for insulin production. Higher levels of glucose in the blood could have very negative, long term effects such as organ damage and blindness.

To date, T1D does not have a defined cause nor cure, and research for this disease is slow and difficult due to the invasive nature of T1D experimentation. Mathematical modeling provides an alternative approach …

The Use Of 3-D Highway Differential Geometry In Crash Prediction Modeling, Kiriakos Amiridis Jan 2019

The Use Of 3-D Highway Differential Geometry In Crash Prediction Modeling, Kiriakos Amiridis

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

The objective of this research is to evaluate and introduce a new methodology regarding rural highway safety. Current practices rely on crash prediction models that utilize specific explanatory variables, whereas the depository of knowledge for past research is the Highway Safety Manual (HSM). Most of the prediction models in the HSM identify the effect of individual geometric elements on crash occurrence and consider their combination in a multiplicative manner, where each effect is multiplied with others to determine their combined influence. The concepts of 3-dimesnional (3-D) representation of the roadway surface have also been explored in the past aiming to …

In addition to our direct sales efforts, we can expect the bar owners to …

Equilibrium Ratio Of Polymers To Monomers In Cooperative Polymerization Of Amyloid-Β Protein, Tina Gagliardo Jan 2019

Equilibrium Ratio Of Polymers To Monomers In Cooperative Polymerization Of Amyloid-Β Protein, Tina Gagliardo

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

Amyloid-β42 is a protein polymer that catalyzes the formation of pathogenic amyloid plaques that are a prominent feature in the brain tissue of patients who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Aβ42 polymerizes via a nucleation-elongation mechanism; several monomers must first congregate into a nucleus before it can elongate into a polymer. The nucleation step is energetically unfavorable since a nucleus smaller than 7 to 8 monomeric units is unstable, therefore the pieces tend to dissociate faster than they can bond together. A solution of Aβ42 will consist of 100% monomers and oligomers smaller than the nucleus when the total concentration is …

Population And Mortality Predictions Of The Florida Manatee – Ten Year Watercraft Mortality, Dylan Lehigh Jan 2019

Population And Mortality Predictions Of The Florida Manatee – Ten Year Watercraft Mortality, Dylan Lehigh

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

The West Indian Manatee is currently listed as a threatened species by the U.S Fish and Wildlife service. A threatened designation means population levels still are at risk of becoming endangered again in the foreseeable future. This project seeks to forecast how many manatees would perish from watercraft strikes (the greatest threat to their survival) based upon the most current method utilized for projecting manatee population growth.

The latest version, known as the Core Biological Model (version 6) or CBMv6, was employed along with the most current manatee population data, which was provided by Dr. Jeffrey A. Hostetler. Dr. Hostetler …

Effects Of Change In Tire Pressure Upon Efficiency Of A Vehicle, Haider Ali Khan Jan 2019

Effects Of Change In Tire Pressure Upon Efficiency Of A Vehicle, Haider Ali Khan

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

The objective of this paper is to compare the difference in the efficiency of acceleration, of a 2018 Audi A8, in two distinct scenarios where the tire pressure is kept at a maximum and partial level. The approach towards solving the issue is multi-faceted, the efficiency is dependent on the difference in the time it takes for the car to accelerate, thus to obtain the elapsed time, the foundational basis is set by the relations between Torque/Force, and RPM/Speed of the vehicle. All the calculations are completed by using the data extracted from the car’s specifications set (Automobile Catalog). Newton’s …

A Mathematical Model For The Upper Limits Of Thyroid Volume In Adolescents, Jacob Treanor Jan 2019

A Mathematical Model For The Upper Limits Of Thyroid Volume In Adolescents, Jacob Treanor

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

This paper describes a mathematical model that relates age to the volume of the thyroid gland, given in milliliters, of adolescents based on data from a 1997 study by the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) (World Health Organization, 1997). Using the upper limit per age group provided by the data, a model was constructed through integration of the second derivative of the data for males and females, ages 6-15. It was concluded that the upper limit for the thyroid volume could be expressed by one of two second order polynomial equations, depending on gender, with any values significantly larger than those …

Using Moment Of Inertia And Observable Planetary Features To Approximate The Two-Layer Structure Of Earth, Jupiter, And Neptune, Selena Kimball Jan 2019

Using Moment Of Inertia And Observable Planetary Features To Approximate The Two-Layer Structure Of Earth, Jupiter, And Neptune, Selena Kimball

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

This paper examines the interior structure and composition of Earth, Jupiter, and Neptune by using moment of inertia (MoI) and observable planetary features to create approximate two-layer interior structure models. The moment inertia of a uniform sphere, hollow sphere, and a sphere with a shell are derived to calculate the radius and density variables that identify the relationship between the different radii and densities of the two layers. A two-layer model of the planet’s interior can then be formulated based on the radius, density, known MoI factor and the surface density or the assumed composition density of the planet. The …

Bicycle Speed Through Different Gears With Drag, Ian Larson Jan 2019

Bicycle Speed Through Different Gears With Drag, Ian Larson

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

When riding a bicycle, the rider experiences two forces: the force of the road that acts upon the rear wheel while pedaling, and an opposing force that exerts on the bicycle/cyclist, called aerodynamic drag force (drag). When adjusting Newton’s equation in the second law of motion, the instantaneous change in velocity is equal to the object’s net force divided by its mass. The corresponding differential equation has not been solved analytically. With the bicycle starting at rest at t=0, we solved the equation numerically for any time t by using what is known as Euler’s Method to plot the …

Using Matrices To Balance Chemical Reactions And Modeling The Implications Of A Balanced Reaction, Emilee Barrett Jan 2019

Using Matrices To Balance Chemical Reactions And Modeling The Implications Of A Balanced Reaction, Emilee Barrett

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

This paper explores an alternative way to balancing equations of chemical reactions and understanding why it is necessary to use balanced equations in science. To balance a chemical equation chemists often guess the coefficients that would balance the equation and check if it works. An alternative method is to use matrices to determine the coefficients of a balanced chemical reaction through solving a system of linear Diophantine equations. After determining the coefficients, a balanced chemical reaction can be formed and used to model how the different coefficients impact the overall reaction. Then it can lead to larger applications within the …

Locating Centers Of Mass With Image Processing, Amina Gahramanova Jan 2019

Locating Centers Of Mass With Image Processing, Amina Gahramanova

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

The center of mass of a rigid body is a unique point that represents the mean position of all matter that composes it. Allowing representing complex bodies as a single point, this concept is underlying the basis of all essential mechanical calculations, and is therefore a crucial consideration in engineering. The paper shows how to devise a fast and convenient way of locating the centroid of planar objects of different shapes. For several shapes that can be represented as regions bounded by graphs of functions, this point can be found by using integral calculus. However, solving for the center of …

Acid-Base Titration, David Pierre Jan 2019

Acid-Base Titration, David Pierre

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

Titration is an analytical method used in biomedical sciences and analytical chemistry laboratories to determine the quantity or the concentration of a known or unknown substance. There are many kinds of titrations, but this investigation is fundamentally based on acid-base titration, in which the development of a mathematical titration model is explained and determined. In a titration experiment, the concentration and volume of the base added is proportionally equal to those of the acid. The concentration of the substance is determined by following this principle. Moreover, these calculations are usually approximate. Thus, the construction of a titration model is done …

Calculus Application To Topographic Mapping, Veronica Zapata Jan 2019

Calculus Application To Topographic Mapping, Veronica Zapata

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

The goal of the paper is to find the volume of water in a ditch. An example image of ditch is given in Appendix C. The first act that before any calculation can be performed is to record the field work. Once at the property the ditch must be identified. Three points of elevations per section should be measured by the surveyor; one point is at the center of the ditch (the lowest point) and the two ones are at the ends (the highest points). The sections are detailed in Appendix A. Using the elevation points from the property, we …

Calculating The Electromotive Force Through A Loop, Esteban Leal

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

This is a short article which utilizes the equations of Faraday’s law, Ampere’s law, and Ohm’s law. We manipulate the formulas to solve a practical application in which the electromotive force must be calculated. With the successful calculation of the electromotive force, we can use this technique in larger applications.

The State Of Lexicodes And Ferrers Diagram Rank-Metric Codes, Jared E. Antrobus Jan 2019

The State Of Lexicodes And Ferrers Diagram Rank-Metric Codes, Jared E. Antrobus

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

In coding theory we wish to find as many codewords as possible, while simultaneously maintaining high distance between codewords to ease the detection and correction of errors. For linear codes, this translates to finding high-dimensional subspaces of a given metric space, where the induced distance between vectors stays above a specified minimum. In this work I describe the recent advances of this problem in the contexts of lexicodes and Ferrers diagram rank-metric codes.

In the first chapter, we study lexicodes. For a ring R, we describe a lexicographic ordering of the left R-module Rn. With this …

Calculating Water Wavelength Using Dispersion Relation And Approximation, Chantelle Lee Jan 2019

Calculating Water Wavelength Using Dispersion Relation And Approximation, Chantelle Lee

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

The dispersion relation equation is used to directly compute wave number and wave length to compliment water wave pressure sensor readings. Waves are measured to help coastal engineering to better mitigate coastal infrastructures. Various given wave periods and water depths are used to show how the dispersion relation equation could compute wave length. Also, shallow and deep-water approximations are formulated from the dispersion relation equation and the results are compared.

Integrating The Equation Of Hydrostatics For Groundwater Under Non-Isothermal Conditions, Megan A. Levine Jan 2019

Integrating The Equation Of Hydrostatics For Groundwater Under Non-Isothermal Conditions, Megan A. Levine

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

Groundwater is an important area of study for several scientific fields and is relevant to many problems in our everyday life. One way the study of groundwater has become different in this age of technology is through modeling. Modeling is used in numerous fields to visualize complex problems and view inaccessible areas, such as under the Earth. An essential part of groundwater modeling is to know water pressure at any depth underground. The difficulty in calculating this is that there are several variables that affect water pressure, all of which are affected by one another and all are calculated by …

Fixed Choice Design And Augmented Fixed Choice Design For Network Data With Missing Observations, Miles Q. Ott, Matthew T. Harrison, Krista J. Gile, Nancy P. Barnett, Joseph W. Hogan Jan 2019

Fixed Choice Design And Augmented Fixed Choice Design For Network Data With Missing Observations, Miles Q. Ott, Matthew T. Harrison, Krista J. Gile, Nancy P. Barnett, Joseph W. Hogan

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

The statistical analysis of social networks is increasingly used to understand social processes and patterns. The association between social relationships and individual behaviors is of particular interest to sociologists, psychologists, and public health researchers. Several recent network studies make use of the fixed choice design (FCD), which induces missing edges in the network data. Because of the complex dependence structure inherent in networks, missing data can pose very difficult problems for valid statistical inference. In this article, we introduce novel methods for accounting for the FCD censoring and introduce a new survey design, which we call the augmented fixed choice …

Investigating The Factors That Best Describe Student Experience And Performance In College, Abigale Wynn

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) surveys students at four-year institutions around the United States in order to offer Universities accessible ways to evaluate their students' experiences and performance. The NSSE data is collected in the form of a Likert-scale survey geared towards first year and senior year students. It asks questions about how they spend their time throughout the academic year and how they rate their experience. This thesis looks at the NSSE survey data from Butler University in 2016 and attempts to apply classification techniques and predictive models to draw conclusions about student performance. Methods such as …

Approximations In Reconstructing Discontinuous Conductivities In The Calderón Problem, George H. Lytle Jan 2019

Approximations In Reconstructing Discontinuous Conductivities In The Calderón Problem, George H. Lytle

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

In 2014, Astala, Päivärinta, Reyes, and Siltanen conducted numerical experiments reconstructing a piecewise continuous conductivity. The algorithm of the shortcut method is based on the reconstruction algorithm due to Nachman, which assumes a priori that the conductivity is Hölder continuous. In this dissertation, we prove that, in the presence of infinite-precision data, this shortcut procedure accurately recovers the scattering transform of an essentially bounded conductivity, provided it is constant in a neighborhood of the boundary. In this setting, Nachman’s integral equations have a meaning and are still uniquely solvable.

To regularize the reconstruction, Astala et al. employ a high frequency …

Forecasting Crashes, Credit Card Default, And Imputation Analysis On Missing Values By The Use Of Neural Networks, Jazmin Quezada

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A neural network is a system of hardware and/or software patterned after the operation of neurons in the human brain. Neural networks,- also called Artificial Neural Networks - are a variety of deep learning technology, which also falls under the umbrella of artificial intelligence, or AI. Recent studies shows that Artificial Neural Network has the highest coefficient of determination (i.e. measure to assess how well a model explains and predicts future outcomes.) in comparison to the K-nearest neighbor classifiers, logistic regression, discriminant analysis, naive Bayesian classifier, and classification trees. In this work, the theoretical description of the neural network methodology …

Optimization Of Mathematical Functions Using Gradient Descent Based Algorithms, Hala Elashmawi Jan 2019

Optimization Of Mathematical Functions Using Gradient Descent Based Algorithms, Hala Elashmawi

Mathematics Theses

Optimization problem involves minimizing or maximizing some given quantity for certain constraints. Various real-life problems require the use of optimization techniques to find a suitable solution. These include both, minimizing or maximizing a function. The various approaches used in mathematics include methods like Linear Programming Problems (LPP), Genetic Programming, Particle Swarm Optimization, Differential Evolution Algorithms, and Gradient Descent. All these methods have some drawbacks and/or are not suitable for every scenario. Gradient Descent optimization can only be used for optimization when the goal is to find the minimum and the function at hand is differentiable and convex. The Gradient Descent …
