Fourier Series Expansion Methods For The Heat And Wave Equations In Two And Three Dimensions On Spherical Domains, Matthew Eller Mar 2019

Fourier Series Expansion Methods For The Heat And Wave Equations In Two And Three Dimensions On Spherical Domains, Matthew Eller

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Description: The Fourier series expansion method is an invaluable approach to solving partial differential equations, including the heat and wave equations. For homogeneous heat and wave equations, the solution can readily be found through separation of variables and then expansion of the solution in terms of the eigenfunctions. Solutions to inhomogeneous heat and wave equations through Fourier series expansion methods were not readily available in the literature for two- and three-dimensional cases. In my previous paper, I developed an approach for solving inhomogeneous heat and wave equations on cubic domains using Fourier series expansion methods. I shall extend my …

Forensics Analysis For Bone Pair Matching Using Bipartite Graphs In Commingled Remains, Ryan Ernst Mar 2019

Forensics Analysis For Bone Pair Matching Using Bipartite Graphs In Commingled Remains, Ryan Ernst

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Identification of missing prisoners of war is a complex and time consuming task. There are many missing soldiers whose remains have yet to be returned to their families and loved ones. This nation has a solemn obligation to its soldiers and their families who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. There are currently over 82,000 unidentified prisoners of war which are identified at a rate of 100+ per year. At this rate it would take 300+ years to complete the identification process. Previously, anthropologists used excel spreadsheets to sort through skeletal data. This project aims to streamline the …

Large Scale Dynamical Model Of Macrophage/Hiv Interactions, Sean T. Bresnahan, Matthew M. Froid Mar 2019

Large Scale Dynamical Model Of Macrophage/Hiv Interactions, Sean T. Bresnahan, Matthew M. Froid

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Properties emerge from the dynamics of large-scale molecular networks that are not discernible at the individual gene or protein level. Mathematical models - such as probabilistic Boolean networks - of molecular systems offer a deeper insight into how these emergent properties arise. Here, we introduce a non-linear, deterministic Boolean model of protein, gene, and chemical interactions in human macrophage cells during HIV infection. Our model is composed of 713 nodes with 1583 interactions between nodes and is responsive to 38 different inputs including signaling molecules, bacteria, viruses, and HIV viral particles. Additionally, the model accurately simulates the dynamics of over …

Dense Geometry Of Music And Visual Arts: Vanishing Points, Continuous Tonnetz, And Theremin Performance, Maria Mannone, Irene Iaccarino, Rosanna Iembo Mar 2019

Dense Geometry Of Music And Visual Arts: Vanishing Points, Continuous Tonnetz, And Theremin Performance, Maria Mannone, Irene Iaccarino, Rosanna Iembo

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

The dualism between continuous and discrete is relevant in music theory as well as in performance practice of musical instruments. Geometry has been used since longtime to represent relationships between notes and chords in tonal system. Moreover, in the field of mathematics itself, it has been shown that the continuity of real numbers can arise from geometrical observations and reasoning. Here, we consider a geometrical approach to generalize representations used in music theory introducing continuous pitch. Such a theoretical framework can be applied to instrument playing where continuous pitch can be naturally performed. Geometry and visual representations of concepts of …

Unfolding Humanity: Cross-Disciplinary Sculpture Design, Gordon D. Hoople, Nate Parde, Quinn Pratt, Sydney Platt, Michael Sween, Ava Bellizzi, Viktoriya Alekseyeva, Alex Splide, Nicholas Cardoza, Christiana Salvosa, Eduardo Ortega, Elizabeth Sampson

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

Unfolding Humanity is a 12 foot tall, 30 foot wide, 2 ton interactive metal sculpture that calls attention to the tension between technology and humanity. This sculpture was conceived, designed, and built by a large group (80+) of faculty, students, and community volunteers at the University of San Diego (USD). The piece is a dodecahedron whose pentagonal walls unfold under human power, an engineered design that alludes to Albrecht Dürer's 500-year-old unsolved math problem on unfolding polyhedra. When closed, the mirrored interior of the sculpture makes visitors feel as though they are at the center of the universe. The idea …

Effective Questioning, Janice Krouse, Marti Shirley Mar 2019

Effective Questioning, Janice Krouse, Marti Shirley

Faculty Publications & Research

Three Major Findings

  1. Tasks are not created equal: they provide different opportunities for student learning and thinking.
  2. Tasks that encourage high level thinking and reasoning have the greatest student success. Student success is lowest where tasks are procedural.
  3. Tasks with high cognitive demand are the hardest to implement and often are transformed into less demanding tasks during instruction.

Excerpt: "The ship, El Perdido, was damaged during a storm which knocked out its main and backup power generators. Before the backup generator failed, Captain Miguel Gomez sent a distress call and the crew have been able to keep El Perdido a oat, but the ship is adrift in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California. Thankfully, a US Coast Guard rescue operation is underway after receiving the distress call. The Coast Guard has El Perdido's last known position and has mapped out the surface water velocities in this area as slope fields for longitude (x) and latitude (y), …

General Error-Based Active Disturbance Rejection Control For Swift Industrial Implementations, R. Madonski, S. Shao, H. Zhang, Z. Gao, J. Yang, S. Li Mar 2019

General Error-Based Active Disturbance Rejection Control For Swift Industrial Implementations, R. Madonski, S. Shao, H. Zhang, Z. Gao, J. Yang, S. Li

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

In this article, a typical 2DOF active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) design is restructured into a 1DOF form, thus making it compatible with standard industrial control function blocks and enhancing its market competitiveness. This methodology integrates the previously separated components, such as the profile generator, state observer, feedback controller, feedforward terms, and disturbance rejection, into one unified structure. In doing so, certain ADRC components can be made simpler (or even obsolete) without sacrificing the nominal control performance, which further simplifies the control synthesis and tuning. A generalized version of the error-driven design is adopted and rigorously proved here using the …

Radiation Effect On Mixed Convection Flow Of Nanofluid Between Two Concentric Cylinders With Hall And Ion-Slip Effects, Md. Shafeeurrahman, D. Srinivasacharya

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper analyzes the effects of thermal radiation, Hall and ion slip parameter on mixed convective nanofluid flow in an annuli between two concentric cylinders in the existence of strong magnetic field. The nonlinear governing equations are non-dimensionalized and then solved by using homotopy analysis method. The influence of radiation, magnetic, Hall and ion slip parameters on the velocity, temperature, nanoparticle concentration, Nusselt number and nanoparticle Sherwood number are investigated and represented graphically.

Gluing Semigroups And Strongly Indispensable Free Resolutions, Mesut Sahin, Leah Gold Stella Mar 2019

Gluing Semigroups And Strongly Indispensable Free Resolutions, Mesut Sahin, Leah Gold Stella

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We study strong indispensability of minimal free resolutions of semigroup rings focusing on the operation of gluing used in literature to take examples with a special property and producenew ones. We give a naive condition to determine whether gluing of two semigroup rings has astrongly indispensable minimal free resolution. As applications, we determine simple gluings of 3-generated non-symmetric, 4-generated symmetric and pseudo symmetric numerical semigroups as well as obtain infinitely many new complete intersection semigroups of any embedding dimensions, having strongly indispensable minimal free resolutions.

Some Results Of Double Sequences In 2-Normed And N-Normed Spaces, P. R. Kavyasree, B. Surender Reddy Mar 2019

Some Results Of Double Sequences In 2-Normed And N-Normed Spaces, P. R. Kavyasree, B. Surender Reddy

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The primary purpose of this paper is to introduce the notion of double sequences in 2-normed space. We provide a simple way to derive a norm from the standard 2-norm by using double sequences when a 2-normed space is given. Equivalence relation between derived norm and the usual norm are established. Using this derived norm, we examine the completeness property of a 2-normed space and we extend the results to n-normed spaces.

Operator Algebras Generated By Left Invertibles, Derek Desantis Mar 2019

Operator Algebras Generated By Left Invertibles, Derek Desantis

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Operator algebras generated by partial isometries and their adjoints form the basis for some of the most well studied classes of C*-algebras. Representations of such algebras encode the dynamics of orthonormal sets in a Hilbert space. We instigate a research program on concrete operator algebras that model the dynamics of Hilbert space frames.

The primary object of this thesis is the norm-closed operator algebra generated by a left invertible $T$ together with its Moore-Penrose inverse $T^\dagger$. We denote this algebra by $\mathfrac{A}_T$. In the isometric case, $T^\dagger = T^*$ and $\mathfrac{A}_T$ is a representation of the Toeplitz algebra. Of particular interest …

The Odd Log-Logistic Gompertz Lifetime Distribution: Properties And Applications, Morad Alizadeh, Saeid Tahmasebi, Mohammad Reza Kazemi, Hamideh Siyamar Arabi Nejad, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, we introduce a new three-parameter generalized version of the Gompertz model called the odd log-logistic Gompertz (OLLGo) distribution. It includes some well-known lifetime distributions such as Gompertz (Go) and odd log-logistic exponential (OLLE) as special sub-models. This new distribution is quite flexible and can be used effectively in modeling survival data and reliability problems. It can have a decreasing, increasing and bathtub-shaped failure rate function depending on its parameters. Some mathematical properties of the new distribution, such as closed-form expressions for the density, cumulative distribution, hazard rate function, the kth order moment, moment generating function and …

Orientation Dependent Elastic Stress Concentration At Tips Of Slender Objects Translating In Viscoelastic Fluids, Chuanbin Li, Becca Thomases, Robert D. Guy Mar 2019

Orientation Dependent Elastic Stress Concentration At Tips Of Slender Objects Translating In Viscoelastic Fluids, Chuanbin Li, Becca Thomases, Robert D. Guy

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

Elastic stress concentration at the tips of long slender objects moving in viscoelastic fluids has been observed in numerical simulations, but despite the prevalence of flagellated motion in complex fluids in many biological functions, the physics of stress accumulation near the tips has not been analyzed. Here, we theoretically investigate elastic stress development at the tips of slender objects by computing the leading-order viscoelastic correction to the equilibrium viscous flow around long cylinders, using the weak-coupling limit. In this limit, nonlinearities in the fluid are retained, allowing us to study the biologically relevant parameter regime of high Weissenberg number. We …

Pbw Bases And Marginally Large Tableaux In Types B And C, Jackson A. Criswell, Ben Salisbury, Peter Tingley

Mathematics and Statistics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We explicitly describe the isomorphism between two combinatorial realizations of Kashiwara’s infinity crystal in types B and C. The first realization is in terms of marginally large tableaux and the other is in terms of Kostant partitions coming from PBW bases. We also discuss a stack notation for Kostant partitions which simplifies that realization.

From Big Science To “Deep Science”, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The Standard Model of particle physics has accomplished a great deal including the discovery of Higgs boson in 2012. However, since the supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model has not been successful so far, some physicists are asking what alternative deeper theory could be beyond the Standard Model? This article discusses the relationship between mathematics and physical reality and explores the ways to go from Big Science to “Deep Science”.
