Using Neural Networks To Classify Pdes, Julia Balukonis, Sabrina Fuller, Haley Rosso Apr 2019

Using Neural Networks To Classify Pdes, Julia Balukonis, Sabrina Fuller, Haley Rosso

Mathematics & Computer Science Student Scholarship

Major: Mathematics
Minor: Computer Science and Film

Faculty Mentor: Dr. Lynette Boos, Mathematics and Computer Science

We designed two neural networks that can learn how to classify three different types of partial differential equations (PDEs). Our data consists of numerical solutions to three categories of PDEs: Burger’s, Diffusion, and Transport equations. Using TensorFlow and the Keras library, we performed two tasks – the first a binary classification of Burger’s and Diffusion equation data, and the second a multi-label classification incorporating the Transport Equations as well. Our binary classification network requires vector labels to perform efficiently. Furthermore, our tertiary classification network …

Ph Dependent C-Jejuni Thermal Inactivation Models And Application To Poultry Scalding, Zachary Mccarthy, Ben Smith, Aamir Fazil, Jianhong Wu, Shawn D. Ryan, Daniel Munther

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Campylobacter jejuni related outbreaks and prevalence on retail poultry products pose threats to public health and cause financial burden worldwide. To resolve these problems, it is imperative to take a closer look at poultry processing practices and standards. Using available data (D-values) on the thermal inactivation of C. jejuni we develop a comprehensive inactivation model, taking into account the variation of strain-specific heat resistance, experimental method, and suspension pH. Utilizing our C. jejuni thermal inactivation model, we study the poultry scalding process. We present a mechanistic model of bacteria transfer and inactivation during a typical immersion scald in a high-speed …

Data Parsing For Optimized Molecular Geometry Calculations, Luke Rens Apr 2019

Data Parsing For Optimized Molecular Geometry Calculations, Luke Rens

Undergraduate Research Conference

The purpose of this project is to optimize and streamline to process of using ADF and ReaxFF. There is no efficient way to effectively add constraints to a compound and run it through ADF, take the ADF output and create a file that can be run through Reaxff, then take that Reaxff output and come to conclusions on it. To streamline this process, scripts were developed using Python to parse information out of data generated by ADF.

Surfaces Of Revolution In Virtual Reality, Joshua Harris Apr 2019

Surfaces Of Revolution In Virtual Reality, Joshua Harris

Undergraduate Research Conference

Why is this project needed?

❑ Surfaces of Revolution is many student’s first experience with three dimensional mathematical objects.

❑ The calculations required are not the inhibitor of the student’s understanding.

❑ Visualization of these solids along with the appropriate set up are the greatest hindrance to a deep under-standing of surfaces of revolution.

❑ Other tools that create computer generated visualizations of surfaces and curves in space render them as two-dimensional projections of a three dimensional object.

❑ Other tools typically do not have the capabilities of guided instruction, exploration of concepts on carefully chosen examples, and the ability …

Determination Differences Between Men And Women In Mathematics, Lacy Cook

Undergraduate Research Conference

We analyzed data collected from 35 Tyler Junior College Students collected over three testing sessions. Students were asked to take a five-question math test. The test included four questions from the American High School Math Examination, where the problems are designed to be solvable for students without any upper level (calculus) mathematics background as well as one randomly generated question. Students were asked to take as much time as they needed, but no longer than one hour to complete the test. We used the amount of time spent on the test to measure the students' level of determination. The goal …

Validation Of A Lottery, Xiaona Zhou Apr 2019

Validation Of A Lottery, Xiaona Zhou

Publications and Research

The NY Pick 4 lottery consists of four "randomly" chosen digits from 0 to 9. For this to be fair, each digit should be equally likely to occur. To determine whether this is the case, a Chi-squared goodness of fit test will be applied to historical data. This provides a quantitative way of measuring how well the observed frequency of digits matches our expectations of a fair lottery. We also explore the "Lucky Sum", which is also a part of the Pick 4. We determine which sum is most likely to occur, and what the odds of winning are if …

Realization Of Tensor Product And Of Tensor Factorization Of Rational Functions, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz Apr 2019

Realization Of Tensor Product And Of Tensor Factorization Of Rational Functions, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We study the state space realization of a tensor product of a pair of rational functions. At the expense of “inflating” the dimensions, we recover the classical expressions for realization of a regular product of rational functions. Under an additional assumption that the limit at infinity of a given rational function exists and is equal to identity, we introduce an explicit formula for a tensor factorization of this function.

An Anatomical And Functional Analysis Of Digital Arteries, Katie Highsmith Apr 2019

An Anatomical And Functional Analysis Of Digital Arteries, Katie Highsmith

Student Scholar Showcase

Blood flow to the tissue of the hands and digits is efficiently regulated by vasoconstriction and vasodilation. Through a series of cadaveric dissection, we examined arteries in the hands and digits, including ulnar artery, radial artery, palmar arteries, and digital arteries, for their distribution (branching) patterns and morphological parameters (e.g., thickness, length between branches, external and internal diameters). Using data directly collected from three female cadavers as input variables to our mathematical model, we simulated vasoconstriction (-20% and -10% diameter) and vasodilation (+10% and +20 diameter) to evaluate the extent of changes in blood volume and flow within the arteries. …

Group Theoretical Analysis Of Arbitrarily Large, Colored Square Grids, Brett Ehrman Apr 2019

Group Theoretical Analysis Of Arbitrarily Large, Colored Square Grids, Brett Ehrman

Student Scholar Showcase

In this research, we examine n x n grids whose individual squares are each colored with one of k distinct colors. We seek a general formula for the number of colored grids that are distinct up to rotations, reflections, and color reversals. We examine the problem using a group theoretical approach. We define a specific group action that allows us to incorporate Burnside’s Lemma, which leads us to the desired general results

Illuminating Changes In Preservice Teachers’ Perceptions About Teaching Elementary Mathematicsin An Introductory Methods Course, Elaine Cerrato Apr 2019

Illuminating Changes In Preservice Teachers’ Perceptions About Teaching Elementary Mathematicsin An Introductory Methods Course, Elaine Cerrato

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Producing highly skilled elementary mathematics teachers capable of facilitating mathematics learning in ways aligned with The Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (NCTM, 2000) and the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM), is a common objective of teacher preparation programs (National Governors Association & Chief Council of State School Officers, 2010). After decades of effort, Brown (2003) argues, teachers continue to teach in the way they were taught; thus, they disregard mathematics standards. As Abell, Appleton, and Hanuscin (2010) note, students’ preexisting ideas relevant to the nature of learning and teaching stem from experiences in their schooling, life, and …

A More Powerful Unconditional Exact Test Of Homogeneity For 2 × C Contingency Table Analysis, Louis Ehwerhemuepha, Heng Sok, Cyril Rakovski Apr 2019

A More Powerful Unconditional Exact Test Of Homogeneity For 2 × C Contingency Table Analysis, Louis Ehwerhemuepha, Heng Sok, Cyril Rakovski

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The classical unconditional exact p-value test can be used to compare two multinomial distributions with small samples. This general hypothesis requires parameter estimation under the null which makes the test severely conservative. Similar property has been observed for Fisher's exact test with Barnard and Boschloo providing distinct adjustments that produce more powerful testing approaches. In this study, we develop a novel adjustment for the conservativeness of the unconditional multinomial exact p-value test that produces nominal type I error rate and increased power in comparison to all alternative approaches. We used a large simulation study to empirically estimate the …

Fractional Matching Preclusion For Butterfly Derived Networks, Xia Wang, Tianlong Ma, Chengfu Ye, Yuzhi Xiao, Fang Wang Apr 2019

Fractional Matching Preclusion For Butterfly Derived Networks, Xia Wang, Tianlong Ma, Chengfu Ye, Yuzhi Xiao, Fang Wang

Theory & Applications of Graphs

The matching preclusion number of a graph is the minimum number of edges whose deletion results in a graph that has neither perfect matchings nor almost perfect matchings. As a generalization, Liu and Liu [18] recently introduced the concept of fractional matching preclusion number. The fractional matching preclusion number (FMP number) of G, denoted by fmp(G), is the minimum number of edges whose deletion leaves the resulting graph without a fractional perfect matching. The fractional strong matching preclusion number (FSMP number) of G, denoted by fsmp(G), is the minimum number of vertices and edges whose deletion …

Quantifying Iron Overload Using Mri, Active Contours, And Convolutional Neural Networks, Andrea Sajewski, Stacey Levine Apr 2019

Quantifying Iron Overload Using Mri, Active Contours, And Convolutional Neural Networks, Andrea Sajewski, Stacey Levine

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

Iron overload, a complication of repeated blood transfusions, can cause tissue damage and organ failure. The body has no regulatory mechanism to excrete excess iron, so iron overload must be closely monitored to guide therapy and measure treatment response. The concentration of iron in the liver is a reliable marker for total body iron content and is now measured noninvasively with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI produces a diagnostic image by measuring the signals emitted from the body in the presence of a constant magnetic field and radiofrequency pulses. At each pixel, the signal decay constant, T2*, can be calculated, …

Patterns, Symmetries, And Mathematical Structures In The Arts, Sarah C. Deloach

Honors College Theses

Mathematics is a discipline of academia that can be found everywhere in the world around us. Mathematicians and scientists are not the only people who need to be proficient in numbers. Those involved in social sciences and even the arts can benefit from a background in math. In fact, connections between mathematics and various forms of art have been discovered since as early as the fourth century BC. In this thesis we will study such connections and related concepts in mathematics, dances, and music.

Mathematical Analysis Of The Duck Migration To Louisiana, Brandon Garcia Apr 2019

Mathematical Analysis Of The Duck Migration To Louisiana, Brandon Garcia

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

The purpose of this project is to research the relationship between duck migration and weather patterns, more specifically trying to determine if the rainfall and temperature in a given year affects the migration patterns of ducks. Duck hunters and conservation- ists alike have observed an overall decrease in the duck population in Louisiana over the past 70 years. Though some years have seen an increase, the population has not recovered to the level from the 1950s. These observations have led to many questions about what have happened to the ducks or where have the ducks gone. Using differ- ent forms …

Historical Study Of The Relationship Between The Federal Funds Rate And The Inflation Rate, Aaron Wilkins Apr 2019

Historical Study Of The Relationship Between The Federal Funds Rate And The Inflation Rate, Aaron Wilkins

Undergraduate External Publications

It is believed that in order to control high inflation rates, the Federal Reserve Bank (“the Fed”) increases the federal funds rate and when the inflation rate gets low, the Fed takes the opposite approach. (The federal funds rate is a rate of interest that banks charge each other to lend funds and stay above the reserve requirement, set by the government.) This project examines the relationship between the federal funds rate and the inflation rate. Sixty-five years of historical inflation rates and federal funds rates were used as the basis for this exploration. Because a time lag between the …

Poisson's Equation, Ehren Braun, Andrew P. Sward Apr 2019

Poisson's Equation, Ehren Braun, Andrew P. Sward

Mathematics: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

This presentation deals with how to solve Poisson's Equation for a two dimensional plate. The numbers can be represented as heat, charge density, and gravitational force. This is a generalization of Laplace's Equation, which are steady state problems. In this problem, it is broken up into two simpler problems. For the first part, there are two ways of solving it since it is two dimensional. This presentation covers both ways of solving it using separation of variables, orthogonality, and partial differential equations. In addition, it shows how to solve the second part and finalize Poisson's Equation.

Lupus Nephritis (LN) is a disease caused by SLE. Given the complexity of LN, we establish an optimal treatment strategy based on a previously developed mathematical model. For our thesis work, the model variables are: Immune Complexes (I), Pro-inflammatory mediators (P), Damaged tissue (D), and Anti-inflammatory mediators (A). The analysis in this research project focuses on analyzing therapeutic strategies to control damage using both parameter estimation techniques (integration of data to quantify any uncertainties associated with …

Semiclassically Modeling Hydrogen At Rydberg States Immersed In Electromagnetic Fields, Jaron Williams Apr 2019

Semiclassically Modeling Hydrogen At Rydberg States Immersed In Electromagnetic Fields, Jaron Williams

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

Originally, closed-orbit theory was developed in order to analyze oscillations in the near ionization threshold (Rydberg) densities of states for atoms in strong external electric and magnetic fields. Oscillations in the density of states were ascribed to classical orbits that began and ended near the atom. In essence, observed outgoing waves following the classical path return and interfere with original outgoing waves, giving rise to oscillations. Elastic scattering from one closed orbit to another gives additional oscillations in the cross-section. This study examines how quantum theory can be properly used in combination with classical orbit theory in order to study …
